  • PHENIX detector overview
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 499:2-3, s. 469-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX detector is designed to perform a broad study of A-A, p-A, and p-p collisions to investigate nuclear matter under extreme conditions. A wide variety of probes, sensitive to all timescales, are used to study systematic variations with species and energy as well as to measure the spin structure of the nucleon. Designing for the needs of the heavy-ion and polarized-proton programs has produced a detector with unparalleled capabilities. PHENIX measures electron and muon pairs, photons, and hadrons with excellent energy and momentum resolution. The detector consists of a large number of subsystems that are discussed in other papers in this volume. The overall design parameters of the detector are presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Dispersion of atrial repolarization in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Europace. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1532-2092 .- 1099-5129. ; 3:4, s. 285-291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To study the role of the dispersion of atrial repolarization (DAR) in the genesis of atrial fibrillation (AF), monophasic action potentials (MAP) were recorded simultaneously from a catheter at the high lateral right atrium (HLRA) and a catheter moving around the high, middle and low lateral right atrium (RA) the high, anterior and posterior septal RA and the RA appendage in 15 patients with paroxysmal AF and 15 patients with atrioventricular nodal re-entry tachycardia (AVNRT) or concealed Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW) without history of AF. After recordings during sinus rhythm (SR), MAPs were recorded during programmed stimulation (PS) via the HLRA catheter at a drive cycle length (CL) of 500 ms. Thus, MAPs were recorded simultaneously from 2 sites at a time and sequentially from 4 to 12 sites during SR, drive pacing and PS. Taking the MAP at the HLRA as reference, the dispersion of repolarization time (dispersion of RT) and its two components, the dispersions of activation time (dispersion of AT) and MAP duration (dispersion of MAP duration) among the 4 to 12 sites were calculated and taken as parameters of DAR. RESULTS: During SR and PS, the maximal dispersion of RT was significantly greater in AF than in control patients, 113+/-49 ms vs 50+/-28 ms (P<0.001) and 114+/-56 vs 70+/-43 ms (P<0.05) respectively. The increased dispersion of RT in the AF group was caused by increases in both dispersion of MAP duration and dispersion of AT. CONCLUSION: During SR and PS, DAR increased in patients with paroxysmal AF due to increases in dispersion of MAP duration and dispersion of AT, which suggests the involvement of both repolarization and conduction disturbances in the development of paroxysmal AF.

  • Bose-Einstein correlations of charged pion pairs in Au+Au collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 200 GeV
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 93:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bose-Einstein correlations of identically charged pion pairs were measured by the PHENIX experiment at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=200 GeV. The Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters were determined as a function of the transverse momentum of the pair and as a function of the centrality of the collision. Using the standard core-halo partial Coulomb fits, and a new parametrization which constrains the Coulomb fraction as determined from the unlike-sign pion correlation, the ratio R-out/R-side is within 0.8-1.1 for 0.25<<1.2 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of all radii is well described by a linear scaling in N-part(1/3), and R-out/R-side for similar to0.45 GeV/c is approximately constant at unity as a function of centrality.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at roots(NN)=200 GeV for identified and inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (eta<0.35) with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (eta=3-4 ). We observe that the v(2) of mesons falls below that of (anti)baryons for p(T)>2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • First results on charm quarkonia production in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The yield of J/psi's measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au-Au reactions at roots(NN) = 200 GeV is analyzed as a function of collision centrality. For this analysis we have studied 49.3x10(6) minimum bias Au-Au reactions. We present the J/psi invariant yield dN/dy for peripheral and midcentral reactions. For the most central collisions where we observe no signal above background, we quote 90% confidence level upper limits. We compare these results with our J/psi measurement from proton-proton reactions at the same energy. We find that our measurements are not consistent with models that predict strong enhancement relative to binary collision scaling.

  • Measurements of nonlinear harmonic generation at the Advanced Photon Source's SASE FEL
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 483:1-2, s. 94-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SASE saturation was recently achieved at the Advanced Photon Source's SASE FFL in the low-energy undulator test line at 530 nm and 385 urn. The electron beam microbunching becomes more and more prominent until saturation is achieved. This bunching causes nonlinear harmonic emission that extends the usefulness of a SASE system in achieving shorter FEL wavelengths for the same electron beam energy. We have investigated the intensity of the fundamental and second harmonic undulator radiation as a function of distance along the undulator line and present the experimental results and compare them to numerical simulations. In addition, we have measured the single-shot second harmonic spectra as well as the simultaneous fundamental and second harmonic spectra and present the experimental results. • Effect of solidification on drop fragmentation in liquid-liquid media
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Heat and Mass Transfer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0947-7411 .- 1432-1181. ; 37:4-5, s. 417-426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents results of experimental and analytical investigation on molten alloy drop fragmentation in water pool. Emphasis is directed towards delineating the roles which melt to coolant heat transfer and melt solidification play in the fragmentation process. The strong impact of coolant temperature upon fragmentation process is addressed. A set of 23 drop fragmentation experiments were performed, in which 8 experiments employed a low melting point alloy, cerrobend-70 and 15 experiments using Pb-Bi eutectic alloy as drop fluid. The results show strong impact of coolant temperature on particle size distribution of the fragmented drops. A linear stability analysis of the interface between the two liquid fluids with thin crust growing between them, is performed. A modified dimensionless Aeroelastic number, for Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, is obtained and used as a criteria for fragmentation of molten drops penetrating into another liquid coolant media with lower temperature. The nondimensionalized mean diameter of the fragmented particles is correlated with the Aeroelastic number.

    • The Low-Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, is intended to demonstrate the basic operation of a SASE-based free-electron laser. Goals include comparison of experimental results With theoretical predictions and scaling laws, identification of problems relevant to fourth-generation light source construction and operation and the means of addressing them, the development of operational and diagnostic techniques to optimize SASE FEL performance and increase repeatability from run to run. and performance of initial pioneering experiments capable of exploiting the unique properties of the laser. The basic layout and operational philosophy of the LEUTL experiment is presented. A summary of past results, including saturation, is reviewed, and a description of recent results is presented. We conclude with future plans, which include pressing to shorter wavelengths and incorporating user experiments into the LEUTL experimental program.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 88:23, s. 4-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the first measurements of z -dependent coherent optical transition radiation (COTR) due to electron-beam microbunching at high gains (>10(4) ) including saturation of a self-amplified spontaneous emission free-electron laser (FEL). In these experiments the fundamental wavelength was near 530 nm, and the COTR spectra exhibit the transition from simple spectra to complex spectra (5% spectral width) after saturation. The COTR intensity growth and angular distribution data are reported as well as the evidence for transverse spectral dependencies and an "effective" core of the beam being involved in microbunching.

  • Statistical Analysis of Signal-to-Noise Ratios in Fringe Pattern Matching
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: IEEE 6th International Conference on Signal Processing Proceedings. ; 1, s. 636-639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents a statistical analysis of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in fringe pattern matching. It shows theoretically that the SNR of interference fringes can be significantly improved by fringe pattern matching or mean square difference calculation based on statistical analysis. Computer simulation and experimental results have confirmed that the high accuracy of fringe pattern matching is due to the significant SNR improvements achieved.

  • An analytical model on the instability of thin film flow dynamics in a micro-gap channel
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enhanced Heat Transfer. - 1065-5131 .- 1563-5074. ; 8:3, s. 175-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to investigate the liquid film dynamics in micro-gap channels, in which a liquid film flows along the wall surfaces and gas flows in the channel core. It is assumed that the Reynolds numbers for both gas and liquid flow are very low and there is no mass transfer at the interface. The instability behavior of the interface of two-phase flow is analysed by employing Stoke's equations, which are solved by non-linear boundary conditions. The solution shows that if the perturbations at the interface are small, they do not grow, however, kinematic waves still exist. All perturbations on the film surface are convoyed by gas flow without growing or decreasing. From the analytical results it is also found that in a micro-gap-channel in the case of constant pressure gradient, the perturbations on both sides of the gap interface are strictly interconnected, and their relationship has been obtained.

  • Evaluation of the Darcy's law performance for two-fluid flow hydrodynamics in a particle debris bed using a lattice-Boltzmann model

  • Ingår i: Heat and Mass Transfer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0947-7411 .- 1432-1181. ; 36:4, s. 295-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present paper, multiphase flow dynamics in a porous medium are analyzed by employing the lattice-Boltzmann modeling approach. A two-dimensional formulation of a lattice-Boltzmann model, using a D2Q9 scheme, is used. Results of the FlowLab code simulation for single phase flow in porous media and for two-phase flow in a channel are compared with analytical solutions. Excellent agreement is obtained. Additionally, fluid-fluid interaction and fluid-solid interaction (wettability) are modeled and examined. Calculations are performed to simulate two-fluid dynamics in porous media, in a wide range of physical parameters of porous media and flowing fluids. It is shown that the model is capable of determining the minimum body force needed for the nonwetting fluid to percolate through the porous medium. Dependence of the force on the pore size, and geometry, as well as on the saturation of the nonwetting fluid is predicted by the model. In these simulations, the results obtained for the relative permeability coefficients indicate the validity of the reciprocity for the two coupling terms in the modified Darcy's law equations. Implication of the simulation results on two-fluid flow hydrodynamics in a decay-heated particle debris bed is discussed.

  • Numerical investigation of boiling regime transition mechanism by a Lattice-Boltzmann model
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Engineering and Design. - 0029-5493 .- 1872-759X. ; 204:1-3, s. 143-153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A numerical study has been performed to investigate the hydrodynamic aspects of the pool boilingon horizontal-, vertical- and downward-facing surfaces. The FlowLab code, which is based on a Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) model of two-phase flows, is employed. Macroscopic properties, such as surface tension (a) and contact angle (beta), are implemented through the fluid-fluid (G(sigma)) and fluid-solid (G(t)) interaction potentials. The model is found to express a linear relation between the macroscopic properties (sigma, beta) and microscopic parameters (G(sigma), G(t)). The simulation results on bubble departure diameter appear to have the same parametric dependence as the empirical correlation. Hydrodynamic aspects of two-phase flow regime transition mechanism are investigated for different surface-coolant configurations. Results of the LB simulation clearly demonstrate that not only the bubble nucleation site density (related, e.g. to the heater surface condition and heat fluxes), but also the surface position have a profound effect on the flow regime (pool boiling) characteristics. The results of the LB simulation of hydrodynamics of two-phase flow on the horizontal surface provide the pictures quite similar to the experimental observation for saturated pool boiling. Two mechanisms of flow (boiling) regime transition on the vertical surface are predicted for the local bubble coalescence at bubble generation site and the downstream bubble coalescence. On the downward-facing surfaces, friction between bubbles and the surface wall is found to significantly enlarge the bubble size prior the bubble slip upwards. This behavior is responsible for the earlier bubble coalescence, and therefore, lowers the maximum heat removal rate, in a similar regime of nucleate boiling on a downward-facing surface.

    • A numerical study was performed to investigate the characteristics of bubble growth, detachment and coalescence on vertical, horizontal, and inclined downward-facing surfaces. The FlowLab code, which is based on a lattice-Boltzmann model of two-phase flows, was employed. Macroscopic properties, such as surface tension (sigma) and contact angle (beta), were implemented through the fluid-fluid (G(sigma)) and fluid-solid (G(t)) interaction potentials. The model predicted a linear relationship between the macroscopic properties (sigma, beta) and microscopic parameters (G(sigma), G(t)). The simulation results on bubble departure diameter appear to have the same parametric dependence as the empirical correlation. Hydrodynamic aspects of bubble coalescence are investigated by simulating the growth and detachment behavior of multiple bubbles generated on horizontal, vertical, and inclined downward-facing surfaces. For the case of horizontal surface, three distinct. regimes of bubble coalescence were represented in the lattice-Boltzmann simulation: lateral coalescence of bubbles situated on the surface; vertical coalescence of bubbles detached in a sequence from a site; and lateral coalescence of bubbles, detached from the surface. Multiple coalescence was predicted on the vertical surface as the bubble detached from a lower elevation merges with the bubble forming on a higher site. The bubble behavior on the inclined downward-facing surface was represented quite similar to that in the nucleate boiling regime on a downward facing surface.

    • A numerical study has been performed to investigate the characteristics of bubble growth on, and detachment from, an orifice. The FlowLab code, which is based on a lattice-Boltzmann model of two-phase flows, was employed. Macroscopic properties, such as surface tension (a) and contact angle (beta), were implemented through the fluid-fluid (G(sigma)) and fluid-solid (G(t)) interaction potentials. The model was found to possess a linear relation between the macroscopic properties (sigma, beta) and microscopic parameters (G(sigma), G(t)). The separate effects of the body force (gravity), gas injection rate, surface tension, and wettability were analyzed for both horizontal and vertical surfaces. It is shown that results of the lattice-Boltzmann modeling exhibit correct parametric dependencies of the departure diameter of bubbles generated on the horizontal surface on the above factors as previously established in experiments. For the case of bubble growth and departure on the vertical surface, the different effects of hydrodynamic parameters, except gas generation rate, were predicted.

  • Numerical simulation of bubbly two-phase flow in a narrow channel
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. - 0017-9310 .- 1879-2189. ; 45:3, s. 631-639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An advanced numerical simulation method on fluid dynamics - lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method is employed to simulate the movement of Taylor bubbles in a narrow channel, and to investigate the flow regimes of two-phase flow in narrow channels under adiabatic conditions. The calculated average thickness of the fluid film between the Taylor bubble and the channel wall agree well with the classical analytical correlation developed by Bretherton. The numerical simulation of the behavior of the flow regime transition in a narrow channel shows that the body force has significant effect on the movement of bubbles with different sizes. Smaller body force always leads to the later coalescence of the bubbles, and decreases the flow regime transition time. The calculations show that the surface tension of the fluid has little effect on the flow regime transition behavior within the assumed range of the surface tension. The bubbly flow with different bubble sizes will gradually change into the slug flow regime. However, the bubbly flow regime with the same bubble size may be maintained if no perturbations on the bubble movement occur. The slug flow regime will not change if no phase change occurs at the two-phase interface.
