  • Ultrasmall Abundant Metal-Based Clusters as Oxygen-Evolving Catalysts
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 141:1, s. 232-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The oxygen evolution reaction is a crucial step in water electrolysis to develop clean and renewable energy. Although noble metal-based catalysts have demonstrated high activity for the oxygen evolution reaction, their application is limited by their high cost and low availability. Here we report the use of a molecule-to-cluster strategy for preparing ultrasmall trimetallic clusters by using the polyoxometalate molecule as a precursor. Ultrafine (0.8 nm) transition-metal clusters with controllable chemical composition are obtained. The transition-metal clusters enable highly efficient oxygen evolution through water electrolysis in alkaline media, manifested by an overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a low Tafel slope of 36 mV dec–1, and long-term stability for 30 h of electrolysis. We note, however, that besides the excellent performance as an oxygen evolution catalyst, our molecule-to-cluster strategy provides a means to achieve well-defined transition-metal clusters in the subnanometer regime, which potentially can have an impact on several other applications.

    • The Visual Object Tracking challenge VOT2019 is the seventh annual tracker benchmarking activity organized by the VOT initiative. Results of 81 trackers are presented; many are state-of-the-art trackers published at major computer vision conferences or in journals in the recent years. The evaluation included the standard VOT and other popular methodologies for short-term tracking analysis as well as the standard VOT methodology for long-term tracking analysis. The VOT2019 challenge was composed of five challenges focusing on different tracking domains: (i) VOT-ST2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB, (ii) VOT-RT2019 challenge focused on "real-time" short-term tracking in RGB, (iii) VOT-LT2019 focused on long-term tracking namely coping with target disappearance and reappearance. Two new challenges have been introduced: (iv) VOT-RGBT2019 challenge focused on short-term tracking in RGB and thermal imagery and (v) VOT-RGBD2019 challenge focused on long-term tracking in RGB and depth imagery. The VOT-ST2019, VOT-RT2019 and VOT-LT2019 datasets were refreshed while new datasets were introduced for VOT-RGBT2019 and VOT-RGBD2019. The VOT toolkit has been updated to support both standard short-term, long-term tracking and tracking with multi-channel imagery. Performance of the tested trackers typically by far exceeds standard baselines. The source code for most of the trackers is publicly available from the VOT page. The dataset, the evaluation kit and the results are publicly available at the challenge website(1).

  • A community-derived classification for extant lycophytes and ferns
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systematics and Evolution. - : Wiley. - 1674-4918 .- 1759-6831. ; 54:6, s. 563-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phylogeny has long informed pteridophyte classification. As our ability to infer evolutionary trees has improved, classifications aimed at recognizing natural groups have become increasingly predictive and stable. Here, we provide a modern, comprehensive classification for lycophytes and ferns, down to the genus level, utilizing a community-based approach. We use monophyly as the primary criterion for the recognition of taxa, but also aim to preserve existing taxa and circumscriptions that are both widely accepted and consistent with our understanding of pteridophyte phylogeny. In total, this classification treats an estimated 11 916 species in 337 genera, 51 families, 14 orders, and two classes. This classification is not intended as the final word on lycophyte and fern taxonomy, but rather a summary statement of current hypotheses, derived from the best available data and shaped by those most familiar with the plants in question. We hope that it will serve as a resource for those wanting references to the recent literature on pteridophyte phylogeny and classification, a framework for guiding future investigations, and a stimulus to further discourse.

    • Underwater imaging has become an active research area in recent years as an effect of increased interest in underwater environments and is getting potential impact on the world economy, in what is called blue growth. Since sound propagates larger distances than electromagnetic waves underwater, sonar is typically used for underwater imaging. One interesting sonar image setting is comprised of using two parts (left and right) and is usually referred to as sidescan sonar. The image resulted from sidescan sonars, which is called waterfall image, usually has to distinctive parts, the water column and the image seabed. Therefore, the edge separating these two parts, which is called the first bottom return, is the real distance between the sonar and the seabed bottom (which is equivalent to sensor primary altitude). The sensory primary altitude can be measured if the imaging sonar is complemented by interferometric sonar, however, simple sonar systems have no way to measure the first bottom returns other than signal processing techniques. In this work, we propose two methods to detect the first bottom returns; the first is based on smoothing cubic spline regression and the second is based on a moving average filter to detect signal variations. The results of both methods are compared to the sensor primary altitude and have been successful in 22 images out of 25.

  • Direct Formation of C-C Double-Bonded Structural Motifs by On-Surface Dehalogenative Homocoupling of gem-Dibromomethyl Molecules
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : AMER CHEMICAL SOC. - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 12:8, s. 7959-7966
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conductive polymers are of great importance in a variety of chemistry-related disciplines and applications. The recently developed bottom-up on-surface synthesis strategy provides us with opportunities for the fabrication of various nanostructures in a flexible and facile manner, which could be investigated by high-resolution microscopic techniques in real space. Herein, we designed and synthesized molecular precursors functionalized with benzal gem-dibromomethyl groups. A combination of scanning tunneling microscopy, noncontact atomic force microscopy, high-resolution synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that it is feasible to achieve the direct formation of C-C double-bonded structural motifs via on-surface dehalogenative homocoupling reactions on the Au(111) surface. Correspondingly, we convert the sp(3)-hybridized state to an sp(2)-hybridized state of carbon atoms, i.e., from an alkyl group to an alkenyl one. Moreover, by such a bottom-up strategy, we have successfully fabricated poly(phenylenevinylene) chains on the surface, which is anticipated to inspire further studies toward understanding the nature of conductive polymers at the atomic scale.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 111:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the temperature-dependent electronic properties of inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) single crystals are investigated. The dynamic current-time measurement results at different temperatures directly demonstrate that the electrical properties of the perovskite single crystal are dependent on the work temperature. We find that the Poole-Frankel conduction mechanism fits the current-voltage curves at small bias voltage (0-1 V) under darkness, which is mainly attributed to the surface defect states. The capability of carriers de-trapping from defects varies with different work temperatures, resulting in an increased current as the temperature increases under both darkness and illumination. In addition, the different transient photocurrent responses of incident light at two wavelengths (470 nm, 550 nm) further confirm the existence of defect states on the single crystal surface. • Corrosion of NiCoCrAIY Coatings and TBC Systems Subjected to Water Vapor and Sodium Sulfate
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of thermal spray technology (Print). - : Springer. - 1059-9630 .- 1544-1016. ; 24:6, s. 953-964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems are commonly used in gas turbines for protection against high-temperature degradation. Penetration of the ceramic top coat by corrosive species may cause corrosion damage on the underlying NiCoCrAlY bond coat and cause failure of the TBC system. In the current study, four oxidation/corrosion conditions were tried: (i) lab air, (ii) water vapor, (iii) sodium sulfate deposited on the specimens, and (iv) water vapor + sodium sulfate. The test was done at 750 °C in a cyclic test rig with 48 h cycles. The corrosion damage was studied on NiCoCrAlY-coated specimens, thin APS TBC specimens, and thick APS TBC specimens. Water vapor was found to have very minor influence on the oxidation, while sodium sulfate increased the TGO thickness both for NiCoCrAlY specimens and TBC-coated specimens; the influence of the TBC thickness was found to be very small. Sodium sulfate promoted thicker TGO; more Cr-rich TGO; the formation of Y oxides, and internally, Y sulfides; pore formation in the coating as well as in the substrate; and the formation of a Cr-depleted zone in the substrate.

  • The Multi-allelic Genetic Architecture of a Variance-Heterogeneity Locus for Molybdenum Concentration in Leaves Acts as a Source of Unexplained Additive Genetic Variance.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: PLOS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 11:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genome-wide association (GWA) analyses have generally been used to detect individual loci contributing to the phenotypic diversity in a population by the effects of these loci on the trait mean. More rarely, loci have also been detected based on variance differences between genotypes. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the possible genetic mechanisms leading to such variance signals. However, little is known about what causes these signals, or whether this genetic variance-heterogeneity reflects mechanisms of importance in natural populations. Previously, we identified a variance-heterogeneity GWA (vGWA) signal for leaf molybdenum concentrations in Arabidopsis thaliana. Here, fine-mapping of this association reveals that the vGWA emerges from the effects of three independent genetic polymorphisms that all are in strong LD with the markers displaying the genetic variance-heterogeneity. By revealing the genetic architecture underlying this vGWA signal, we uncovered the molecular source of a significant amount of hidden additive genetic variation or "missing heritability". Two of the three polymorphisms underlying the genetic variance-heterogeneity are promoter variants for Molybdate transporter 1 (MOT1), and the third a variant located ~25 kb downstream of this gene. A fourth independent association was also detected ~600 kb upstream of MOT1. Use of a T-DNA knockout allele highlights Copper Transporter 6; COPT6 (AT2G26975) as a strong candidate gene for this association. Our results show that an extended LD across a complex locus including multiple functional alleles can lead to a variance-heterogeneity between genotypes in natural populations. Further, they provide novel insights into the genetic regulation of ion homeostasis in A. thaliana, and empirically confirm that variance-heterogeneity based GWA methods are a valuable tool to detect novel associations of biological importance in natural populations.

  • Enhancing PbS Colloidal Quantum Dot Tandem Solar Cell Performance by Graded Band Alignment
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 10:19, s. 5729-5734
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal quantum dot solids are attractive candidates for tandem solar cells because of their widely tunable bandgaps. However, the development of the quantum dot tandem solar cell has lagged far behind that of its single-junction counterpart. One of the fundamental problems with colloidal quantum dot solar cells is the relatively small diffusion length, which limits the quantum dot absorbing layer thickness and hence the power conversion efficiency. In this research, guided by optical modeling and utilizing a graded band alignment strategy, a two-terminal monolithic solution-processed quantum dot tandem solar cell has been successfully fabricated and a power conversion efficiency of 6.8% has been achieved. The band grading approach utilized the complementary tuning of work functions and band alignment through judicious choices of the nanoparticle surface chemistry and quantum dot confined size. This work demonstrates a general approach to improving the efficiency for tandem thin-film solar cells.

  • Progress of passive enhanced heat transfer tubes
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Xiandai Huagong/Modern Chemical Industry. - 0253-4320. ; 37:3, s. 24-30
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A review of several typical enhanced heat transfer tubes such as corrugated tube, transversally corrugated tube, twisted tube and spiral fluted tube, is carried out. Compared with smooth wall tube, these enhanced tubes have higher heat exchange capacity and better anti - fouling ability. Besides, the heat transfer efficiency can be promoted to a higher level if the objects that can disturb flow are put in the tubes. However, higher heat transfer efficiency of such enhanced heat transfer tubes can only be achieved under certain conditions. Therefore, new heat transfer tubes that could avoid the formation of mobile dead-zone should be designed to meet the broad applications or facilitate better heat transfer effect.

  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 524:7563, s. 47-U73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have sequenced the genomes of 110 small cell lung cancers (SCLC), one of the deadliest human cancers. In nearly all the tumours analysed we found bi-allelic inactivation of TP53 and RB1, sometimes by complex genomic rearrangements. Two tumours with wild-type RB1 had evidence of chromothripsis leading to overexpression of cyclin D1 (encoded by the CCND1 gene), revealing an alternative mechanism of Rb1 deregulation. Thus, loss of the tumour suppressors TP53 and RB1 is obligatory in SCLC. We discovered somatic genomic rearrangements of TP73 that create an oncogenic version of this gene, TP73Dex2/3. In rare cases, SCLC tumours exhibited kinase gene mutations, providing a possible therapeutic opportunity for individual patients. Finally, we observed inactivating mutations in NOTCH family genes in 25% of human SCLC. Accordingly, activation of Notch signalling in a pre-clinical SCLC mouse model strikingly reduced the number of tumours and extended the survival of the mutant mice. Furthermore, neuroendocrine gene expression was abrogated by Notch activity in SCLC cells. This first comprehensive study of somatic genome alterations in SCLC uncovers several key biological processes and identifies candidate therapeutic targets in this highly lethal form of cancer.

  • A parametric study of hydrodynamic cavitation inside globe valves
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids Engineering. - : ASME International. - 0098-2202 .- 1528-901X. ; 140:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydrodynamic cavitation that occurs inside valves not only increases the energy consumption burden of the whole piping system but also leads to severe damages to the valve body and the piping system with a large economic loss. In this paper, in order to reduce the hydrodynamic cavitation inside globe valves, effects of valve body geometrical parameters including bending radius, deviation distance, and arc curvature linked to in/ export parts on hydrodynamic cavitation are investigated by using a cavitation model. To begin with, the numerical model is compared with similar works to check its accuracy. Then, the cavitation index and the total vapor volume are predicted. The results show that vapor primarily appears around the valve seat and connecting downstream pipes. The hydrodynamic cavitation does not occur under a small inlet velocity, a large bending radius, and a large deviation distance. Cavitation intensity decreases with the increase of the bending radius, the deviation distance, and the arc curvature linked to in/export parts. This indicates that valve geometrical parameters should be chosen as large as possible, while the maximal fluid velocity should be limited. This work is of significance for hydrodynamic cavitation or globe valve design.

  • Cavitating flow through a micro-orifice
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Micromachines. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-666X. ; 10:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microfluidic systems have witnessed rapid development in recent years. As one of the most common structures, the micro-orifice is always included inside microfluidic systems. Hydrodynamic cavitation in the micro-orifice has been experimentally discovered and is harmful to microfluidic systems. This paper investigates cavitating flow through a micro-orifice. A rectangular micro-orifice with a l/d ratio varying from 0.25 to 4 was selected and the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet varied from 50 to 300 kPa. Results show that cavitation intensity increased with an increase in pressure difference. Decreasing exit pressure led to a decrease in cavitation number and cavitation could be prevented by increasing the exit pressure. In addition, the vapor cavity also increased with an increase in pressure difference and l/d ratio. Results also show the pressure ratio at cavitation inception was 1.8 when l/d was above 0.5 and the cavitation number almost remained constant when l/d was larger than 2. Moreover, there was an apparent difference in cavitation number depending on whether l/d was larger than 1.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science. - : SAGE Publications. - 0954-4062 .- 2041-2983. ; 232:13, s. 2419-2429
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel pilot-control angle globe valve is proposed, and it has an obvious advantage of energy conservation during its opening and closing process. In pilot-control angle globe valve, the opening and closing forces are related to the orifice located inside the valve core. In this paper, the effects of orifice diameter are thoroughly studied under different working conditions such as valve core displacements and inlet velocities. To begin with, the numerical model is validated by comparing similar angle valves, and then the flow and loss coefficients under different orifice diameters are discussed. It is found that the effects of orifice diameter on force acting on valve core depend on valve core displacement and inlet velocity. Thus different valve core displacements and inlet velocities combined with different orifice diameters are further studied. It is also found that when the orifice diameter is larger than 12 mm, pilot-control angle globe valve cannot be used under small inlet velocity or large valve core displacement. In addition, formulas to calculate forces on valve core are proposed for further orifice design. This work can be referred in process industries especially in a piping system with orifice plates or globe valves.

  • Effects of pitch and corrugation depth on heat transfer characteristics in six-start spirally corrugated tube
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. - : Elsevier BV. - 0017-9310. ; 108, s. 1011-1025
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spirally corrugated tube is one of the most important parts of coaxial heat exchangers. It can greatly improve the heat transfer efficiency of heat exchangers. Here, a novel spirally corrugated tube with six-start is proposed. However, up to now, there is little literature about the heat transfer performance and flow field of this novel six-start spirally corrugated tube. In this paper, the effects of geometric parameters (pitch p, corrugation depth e), Reynolds number Re and fluid properties on the heat transfer performances are investigated based on the validated numerical model. The results show that with the increasing of pitch p, both the heat transfer coefficient h and Nusselt number Nu decrease gradually. Meanwhile, with the increasing of corrugation depth e, both the secondary flow velocity vxy and the vorticity of longitudinal vortex increase gradually. Moreover, under the same working condition, the heat transfer performances of the six-start spirally corrugated tube are affected by both the working medium and Reynolds number. Finally, a criterion correlation for heat transfer calculation in the six-start spirally corrugated tube is proposed and validated to be reliable and suitable. This work can reveal the enhanced heat transfer mechanism of the six-start spirally corrugated tube and benefit the further research on heat transfer characteristics of multi-start spirally corrugated tube or other related devices.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluids Engineering. - : ASME International. - 0098-2202 .- 1528-901X. ; 139:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pilot-control globe valve (PCGV) can use the pressure drop caused by fluid flowing through the orifice located at valve core bottom to open or close the main valve using a small pilot valve. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is adopted to analyze the pressure drop before and after valve core of PCGV and minor loss of orifice under different structural parameters and inlet velocities, and the simulation results show a good agreement with the experimental results. It turns out that the valve diameters, orifice diameters, and pilot pipe diameters have great influences on the pressure drop and the loss coefficient. Moreover, an expression is proposed which can be used to calculate minor loss coefficient, then to estimate the pressure drop and driving force of a PCGV within limited conditions. This paper can be referenced as guidance for deciding the dimension of structural parameters and spring stiffness during design process of a PCGV.

  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 37:8, s. 2889-2899
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work concerns the study of damage evolution in a newly developed high purity nano 8YSZ thermal barrier coating during thermal cyclic fatigue tests (TCF). TCF tests were conducted between 100 degrees C-1100 degrees C with a hold time of 1 hat 1100 degrees C, first till failure and later for interrupted tests. Cross section analysis along the diameter of the interrupted test samples revealed a mixed-type failure and that the most of the damage occurred towards the end of the coatings life. To understand the most likely crack growth mechanism leading to failure, different crack growth paths have been modelled using finite element analysis. Crack growing from an existing defect in the top coat towards the top coat/TGO interface has been identified as the most likely mechanism. Estimated damage by the model could predict the rapid increase in the damage towards the end of the coatings life. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    • Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), consisting of a ceramic top coat and a metallic bond coat, offer resistance against high temperature degradation of turbine components. Cyclic oxidation of the bond coat, thermal stresses due to their thermal mismatches during cyclic operations, and sintering of the top coat are considered to be the common ways by which thermal barrier coatings fail. To reduce sintering, a nano structured high purity yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was developed. The focus of this work is to compare the damage development of such high purity nano YSZ TBC during thermal cycling with a conventional YSZ TBC. Thermal cyclic fatigue (TCF) tests were conducted on both the TBC systems between 100 °C and 1100 °C with a 1 h hold time at 1100 °C. TCF test results showed that conventional YSZ TBC exhibited much higher life compared to the high purity nano YSZ TBC. The difference in the lifetime is explained by the use of microstructural investigations, crack length measurements along the cross-section and the difference in the elastic modulus. Furthermore, stress intensity factors were calculated in order to understand the difference(s) in the damage development between the two TBC systems.

    • Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) degradation due to corrosion is one of the commonly observed failure types in land-based gas turbines due to the usage of low grade fuels. Sulfur in its gaseous form, as SO2, can attack the TBC system and result in the degradation of both the coating and the turbine component. The present study aims to understand the difference in the corrosion induced damage caused by SO2 gas mixture in different coating architectures. Corrosion tests were conducted at 780 degrees C in a tube furnace for a period of 168h. The inlet test gas had a composition of 1SO(2)-0.1CO-20CO(2)-N-2 (bal.) in vol. %. The coating architectures consisted of 1) an overlay coating, 2) a single-side bond coat TBC, 3) an all-side bond coat TBC, 4) an all-side bond coat TBC subjected to pre-oxidation prior to the corrosion tests. The results from the corrosion tests showed that the damage was the most severe for the overlay followed by single-side bond coat TBC. Between the other two systems, the TBC subjected to pre-oxidation had relatively lower corrosion damage. The corrosion damage started from the edges for the overlay and single-side bond coat TBC and as well as through the penetration of the gas through the coating. For the coatings with bond coat on all sides, the edge damage appeared to be considerably reduced and the damage is predominantly through the gas infiltration.
