  • Atmospheric composition change : global and regional air quality
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310 .- 1873-2844. ; 43:33, s. 5268-5350
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Air quality transcends all scales with in the atmosphere from the local to the global with handovers and feedbacks at each scale interaction. Air quality has manifold effects on health, ecosystems heritage and, climate. In this review the state of scientific understanding in relation to global and regional air quality is outlined. The review discusses air quality, in terms of emissions, processing and transport of trace gases and aerosols. New insights into the characterization of both natural and anthropogenic emissions are reviewed looking at both natural (e.g. dust and lightning) as well as plant emissions. Trends in anthropogenic emissions both by region and globally are discussed as well as biomass burning emissions. In terms of chemical processing the major air quality elements of ozone, non-methane hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and aerosols are covered. A number of topics are presented as a way of integrating the process view into the atmospheric context; these include the atmospheric oxidation efficiency, halogen and HOx chemistry, nighttime chemistry, tropical chemistry, heat waves, megacities, biomass burning and the regional hot spot of the Mediterranean. New findings with respect to the transport of pollutants across the scales are discussed, in particular the move to quantify the impact of long-range transport on regional air quality. Gaps and research questions that remain intractable are identified. The review concludes with a focus of research and policy questions for the coming decade. In particular, the policy challenges for concerted air quality and climate change policy (co-benefit) are discussed.

  • Millimetron—a large Russian-European submillimeter space observatory
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Experimental Astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0922-6435 .- 1572-9508. ; 23:1, s. 221-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Millimetron is a Russian-led 12 m diameter submillimeter and far-infrared space observatory which is included in the Space Plan of the Russian Federation for launch around 2017. With its large collecting area and state-of-the-art receivers, it will enable unique science and allow at least one order of magnitude improvement with respect to the Herschel Space Observatory. Millimetron will be operated in two basic observing modes: as a single-dish observatory, and as an element of a ground-space very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) system. As single-dish, angular resolutions on the order of 3 to 12 arc sec will be achieved and spectral resolutions of up to a million employing heterodyne techniques. As VLBI antenna, the chosen elliptical orbit will provide extremely large VLBI baselines (beyond 300,000 km) resulting in micro-arc second angular resolution.

  • Gold Nanoparticle Sensors For Environmental Pollutant Monitoring
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2007 2nd IEEE International Workshop on Advances in Sensors and Interfaces, June 26-27, 2007 Bari, Italy. - : IEEE. - 9781424412457 - 9781424412457 ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •      Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) have been synthesised using a sacrificial anode electrolysis in the presence of tetra-alkyl-ammonium halides, employed as cationic stabilizers. Catalytic NPs have been then deposited on top of Field Effect (FE) gas sensing devices and subjected to mild annealing procedures. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) shows that the NP average core diameter is around 5 nm. X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) have been applied to the surface characterization of the annealed NP films used as active sensing layers. Morphological and spectroscopic results demonstrate that the annealed inorganic nano-clusters are finely dispersed and maintain a metallic oxidation state. Au-NPs can be proficiently employed as gate material in Si-Field Effect Gas Sensors. Preliminary results show interesting selectivity and sensitivity sensing features towards NOx detection.
