  • Discourse analysis and oral history. Intersections of gender, locality, nation and religion in narratives from a Jewish refugee in Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: ENQUIRE. - 2041-6776. ; :1, s. 1-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we elaborate on the possibility to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history within one methodological framework in order to explore how identities are narrated and negotiated in relation to different situations, contexts and interviewers. In oral history, the purpose is often to “give voice” to marginalized or forgotten individuals or groups, to listen to their stories and give them the possibility to speak from their perspectives. We agree with these emancipatory aims of oral history. Simultaneously we deconstruct and analyze interviews in order to investigate identity constructions. We work with the concepts of intersectionality and narrated identity, which allow us to investigate how groups and individuals that are marginalized and discriminated negotiate their own and other identities. At the same time it is unclear if our interviewees understand these kinds of analysis of their narratives. In order to combine a social constructivist perspective and oral history in a fruitful way, we must be aware of this relation of power and explain to the interviewees what we are doing and why we are doing it. In a broader research perspective this deconstructive approach illustrates interesting assumptions about multidimensional identity constructions.

  • State policies and livelihoods - Rwandan Human Settlement Policy. Case Study of Ngera and Nyagahuru Villages
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Through a case study of two villages of the Southern Province of Rwanda, this thesis explores the effects on Rwanda National Settlement Policy on the livelihoods of the rural population. With today 344 inhabitants per km², Rwanda has the highest population densities of Sub-Saharan Africa. Subsistence agriculture is the mainstay for more than 90 percent of the population. Since 1997, Rwanda has undertaken a controversial policy of grouping people in villages whereas rural traditional habitat is that of scattered homesteads on the hills’ slopes. The rationale of the policy is dealing of high demographic pressure on little arable land. Grouping people in villages would free more land for cultivation. But the policy is also profoundly rooted in the history of the country for the last half century. Between 1952 and 1972, experiences of agricultural modernization were conducted through the so-called paysannats. A villagisation experiment was tried in 1970es-1980es in pilot villages without much success. The new habitat policy is like a continuation of those past experiences. However, the new policy was mainly driven by the genocide of 1994 and its aftermaths. Tutsi returnees after more than three decades in exile and genocide survivors whose houses were destroyed needed a safe place to stay when the genocide ended in July 1994. Some occupied properties of Hutu who left the country in the wake of RPF victory fearing reprisals. When Hutu returnees were forced back home in 1996-1997, the government needed to find a way to address the property issue, to avoid further sociopolitical violence. Analyzing the cases of Ngera and Nyagahuru, two villages of the southern Province constructed by the Belgian Cooperation in 1998-2000, the thesis indicates the vulnerability situation of imidugudu villages’ dwellers. A high rate of women headed households, direct consequence of the genocide, scarce natural resources, weakness of social institutions and little possibility of non farm activities are important elements which need to be taken into consideration to make a decent living for all. The government of Rwanda has initiated other policies closely related to Human Settlement Policy like Agricultural Policy, Land Policy and Environmental Policy. The thesis examines important aspects of those policies which influence the livelihoods of “imidugudu” dwellers. The thesis ends suggesting some other possible ways of rural development which should be explored.

  • Arbets(o)förmåga - begreppsliga och etiska anmärkningar
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Arbets(o)förmåga - ur ett mångdisciplinärt perspektiv. - Stockholm : Santérus förlag. - 9789173590105 ; , s. 21-46

  • Gender regimes, citizen participation and rural restructuring
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This book aims to unravel how rural gender regimes are constituted, enforced, made sense of and resisted, and ho struggles of resistance lead to empowerment and change in various countries in the four corners of Europe as well s Australia and India. The book focuses on the intricate relationship between laws and institutions and everyday life. It analyzes on the one hand how laws and institutions are constituted and on the other hand how gender regimes are built at the local rural level, sometimes in compliance with these frames and sometimes contesting them, The articles, in diverse ways, give voice both to women’s struggles for recognition and men’s voices in gendered rural societies. Through applying the concept of the welfare state and gender regimes within rural research, this book contributes to the further development of a comparative theoretical framework for rural gender studies. The importance of integrating rural gender studies into both the mainstreams of rural and feminist research has been emphasized in previous research, as has that of developing comparative analytical frameworks. The conceptual framework adopted in this volume wets out to meet this challenge by approaching rural gender relations and the meeting point of two core research areas: gender regimes and rural transformative processes. Research into gender regimes offers a promising analytical framework for comparing gender relations in diverse rural settings. At the same time, by addressing rural concerns deriving from the specificity of rural transition processes and gender regimes, the approach also contributes to an elucidation of the complexity of citizenship.

  • Who Cares and Who Pays? : The Stakeholders of Maritime Human Factors
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Human Factors in Ship Design & Operation. - London : Royal Institute of Naval Architects. ; , s. 69-76, s. 69-76
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper aims at identifying the key stakeholders in maritime human factors and analyse their interest in, and power to influence the human factors issues. A stakeholder analysis is done and a model displays eight stakeholders from a vessel lifecycle perspective. It is concluded that the interest and the power to influence is much differentiated, largely due to the nature of shipping. An increased public interest in environmental, economic and socio-political sustainability has affected the environmental work in the industry and it is believed that pressure from consumers will lead to increased demands on shipping. It is further concluded that well operated shipping contribute to greater overall efficiency and economy and should offset higher unit freight costs resulting by the use of better maintained and managed ships.

  • Without a Trace : The construction of “asylum-seeking children vanishing from official registration” in daily news discourse in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the UK
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Child Slavery Now 27-28 November 2008, WISE/The University of Hull.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper aims to deconstruct the narratives of asylum seeking children who go missing from official registrations in daily newspapers from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the UK during 2000 until the midst of 2008. The sample of newspapers consists of four large national newspapers, according to the number of daily circulation figures, from each of the four countries, from which a total of 276 articles concerning occurrences of “vanishing asylum seeking children” has been detracted. The study finds that during the time period from 2000 until 2008 such instances become framed rather differently in the Scandinavian countries compared to the UK. During the period from 2000 until 2005 such narratives, in the British context, became framed as possible indicators of organized trafficking of (mainly) African children through the British asylum system. In the Norwegian and Swedish newspaper articles similar incidences, during the 2000 until 2005, was understood as cases of "missing vulnerable children" or "absconders" per see. In the Danish newspapers comparable episodes was not framed as constituting a coherent social problem. During the end of 2005 until 2008 the three Scandinavian countries came to understand episodes of missing asylum-seeking children quite parallel and as constituting proof of asylum-seeking and unaccompanied children being trafficked. In Britain the trafficking focus was still dominant, but an understanding of missing asylum-seeking children as a case of a "missing child", also became prominent during 2005 until midst of 2008.

  • Diversity and divisions in the Swedish disability movement : disability, gender and social justice
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1501-7419 .- 1745-3011. ; 9:1, s. 26-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is lively discussion in the social sciences about minority groups and their claims for social justice. Universalism versus difference and redistribution versus recognition are two important issues of debate. This paper takes a closer look at the social justice claims articulated by the Swedish disability movement. It discusses how questions of representation, collective identity, and needs interpretations are dealt with in a number of disability associations. One important assumption guiding our study is that the interpretations of members' needs, how their needs can best be met, and who is to have the legitimate right to communicate their needs, are questions subject to constant debate. The aim is to demonstrate some of the complexities confronting the disability movement in its struggle for social justice. To be more specific, we set out to show two things: (i) how different kinds of justice claims are balanced by the investigated organizations; and (ii) that the demands for cultural recognition and socioeconomic redistribution are raised not only by the disability movement vis-à-vis the state, but also by groups within the disability movement vis-à-vis other groups in the movement.

  • Women's Work-Related and Family-Related Discrimination and Support in Academia
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Gender Relations: Local and Global. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 9780762312146 - 9781849503457 ; , s. 161-199
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Academia remains a male-dominated occupational realm, even though women have made great gains as actors in higher education. The interconnections of work-related and family-related discrimination experiences and work-related and family-related support are analyzed, drawing on over 100 semi-structured interviews with and written accounts of academic women in 11 Finnish universities from all major disciplinary fields. Finland provides an interesting research context, characterized by relatively high gender equality in both academia and society more generally. Exploring academic women in this setting reveals several paradoxes, namely those of: feminization of academia; family-friendly policies; academic motherhood; and academic endogamy.

  • Intergenerational interests, uncertainty and discrimination: Conceptualising the process of declining child sex ratios in India
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Paper for the International Conference on Emerging Population Issues in the Asia Pacific Region: Challenges for the 21st Century, International Institute for Population Sciences, 10-13 December 2006, Mumbai, India.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article builds upon the recognition that the declining child sex ratios are a result of an ongoing process of societal change. Looking at areas which have shown significant declines in child sex ratios between 1991 and 2001, the article draws on results from recently conducted field studies in rural areas of Karnataka in the South and of Uttaranchal in the North. Uttaranchal has shown an alarming decline in the child sex ratio from 948 in 1991 to 906 in 2001. Of special interest are results of case studies from Siddapur Taluk7, Uttara Kannada District, in the Western Ghats of Karnataka and from Pithoragarh Tehsil, Pithoragarh District, in the eastern part of Uttaranchal8. For both cases the outstanding feature is a very low child sex ratio. Two additional cases with high child sex ratios are used for comparative purposes.

  • Saraprojektet 2004-2007
  • 2008

  • The Subject's Duties and the Citizen's Demands : On Changes in Elder Care in Swedish Agrarian Society, 1815-1939
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family History. - : Sage Publlications. - 0363-1990 .- 1552-5473. ; 33:1, s. 81-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AbstractThe performance of elder care, both public efforts and family-based, in two socio-economically very different settings are examined. The author argues that there were connections between an area’s socio-economic structure and the way elder care was organized. Until 1920 elder care was governed by traditional patriarchal values found in both areas. Elderly people with some resources could more easily obtain public support than those who had nothing. Also a gender dimension was visible as men but not women were allowed reproductive support. Women had to work because of their class position, not because of their sex. The growing welfare state blurred the distinction between the private and the public sphere as old age security shifted from a family duty to a civil right. This shift, linked to democratization, occurred more slowly in the region of landless tenants and farm workers, which also were the more patriarchal dominated area.

  • Kvinnors företagande : arbetsmarknadsbeteende och organisatorisk lösning
  • 2007
