  • Pygmy dipole resonance in Sn-124 populated by inelastic scattering of O-17
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 738, s. 519-523
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gamma decay from the high-lying states of Sn-124 was measured using the inelastic scattering of O-17 at 340 MeV. The emitted gamma rays were detected with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array and the scattered ions were detected in two segmented Delta E-E silicon telescopes. The angular distribution was measured both for the gamma rays and the scattered O-17 ions. An accumulation of E1 strength below the particle threshold was found and compared with previous data obtained with (gamma, gamma') and (alpha, alpha'gamma) reactions. The present results of elastic scattering, and excitation of E2 and E1 states were analysed using the DWBA approach. From this comprehensive description the isoscalar component of the 1-excited states was extracted. The obtained values are based on the comparison of the data with DWBA calculations including a form factor deduced using a microscopic transition density.

  • Interaction position resolution simulations and in-beam measurements of the AGATA HPGe detectors
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 638:1, s. 96-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interaction position resolution of the segmented HPGe detectors of an AGATA triple cluster detector has been studied through Monte Carlo simulations and in an in-beam experiment. A new method based on measuring the energy resolution of Doppler-corrected γ-ray spectra at two different target to detector distances is described. This gives the two-dimensional position resolution in the plane perpendicular to the direction of the emitted γ-ray. The γ-ray tracking was used to determine the full energy of the γ-rays and the first interaction point, which is needed for the Doppler correction. Five different heavy-ion induced fusion-evaporation reactions and a reference reaction were selected for the simulations. The results of the simulations show that the method works very well and gives a systematic deviation of in the FWHM of the interaction position resolution for the γ-ray energy range from 60 keV to 5 MeV. The method was tested with real data from an in-beam measurement using a 30Si beam at 64 MeV on a thin 12C target. Pulse-shape analysis of the digitized detector waveforms and γ-ray tracking was performed to determine the position of the first interaction point, which was used for the Doppler corrections. Results of the dependency of the interaction position resolution on the γ-ray energy and on the energy, axial location and type of the first interaction point, are presented. The FWHM of the interaction position resolution varies roughly linearly as a function of γ-ray energy from 8.5 mm at 250 keV to 4 mm at 1.5 MeV, and has an approximately constant value of about 4 mm in the γ-ray energy range from 1.5 to 4 MeV.

  • Global properties of K hindrance probed by the gamma decay of the warm rotating W-174 nucleus
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 88:3, s. 034312-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The K hindrance to the gamma decay is studied in the warm rotating W-174 nucleus, focusing on the weakening of the selection rules of the K quantum number with increasing excitation energy. W-174 was populated by the fusion reaction of Ti-50 (at 217 MeV) on a Te-128 target, and its gamma decay was detected by the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to a BaF2 multiplicity filter at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of INFN. A fluctuation analysis of gamma coincidence matrices gives a similar number of low-K and high-K discrete excited bands. The results are compared to simulations of the gamma-decay flow based on a microscopic cranked shell model at finite temperature in which the K mixing is governed by the interplay of Coriolis force with the residual interaction. Agreement between simulations and experiment is obtained only by hindering the E1 decay between low-K and high-K bands by an amount compatible with that determined by spectroscopic studies of K isomers in the same mass region, with a similar trend with excitation energy. The work indicates that K mixing due to temperature effects may play a leading role for the entire body of discrete excited bands, which probes the onset region of K weakening.

  • Evidence for shape coexistence at medium spin in Rb-76
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters. Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 701:3, s. 306-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Four previously known rotational bands in Rb-76 have been extended to moderate spins using the Gammasphere and Microball gamma ray and charged particle detector arrays and the Ca-40(Ca-40,3pn) reaction at a beam energy of 165 MeV. The properties of two of the negative-parity bands can only readily be interpreted in terms of the highly successful Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model calculations if they have the same configuration in terms of the number of g(9/2) particles, but they result from different nuclear shapes (one near-oblate and the other near-prolate). These data appear to constitute a unique example of shape coexisting structures at medium spins. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Electromagnetic properties of vibrational bands in Er-170
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 47:2, s. 25-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of the nucleus Er-170 have been studied by Coulomb excitation using the GASP gamma-ray detector system at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The ground-state band along with a low-lying K-pi = 0(+) band and gamma-vibrational band were populated during the experiment. Based on the measured gamma-ray yields, a set of interband and intraband matrix elements has been extracted using the Coulomb excitation code GOSIA. The resulting E2 matrix elements are compared to collective model predictions.

  • Monte Carlo simulation of a single detector unit for the neutron detector array NEDA
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 673, s. 64-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study of the dimensions and performance of a single detector of the future neutron detector array NEDA was performed by means of Monte Carlo simulations, using GEANT4. Two different liquid scintillators were evaluated: the hydrogen based BC501A and the deuterated BC537. The efficiency and the probability that one neutron will trigger a signal in more than one detector were investigated as a function of the detector size. The simulations were validated comparing the results to experimental measurements performed with two existing neutron detectors, with different geometries, based on the liquid scintillator BC501

  • Test of digital neutron-gamma discrimination with four different photomultiplier tubes for the NEutron Detector Array (NEDA)
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 767, s. 83-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comparative study of the neutron-gamma discrimination performance of a liquid scintillator detector BC501A coupled to four different 5 in photomultiplier tubes (ET9390kb, R11833-100, XP4512 and R4144) was carried out Both the Charge Comparison method and the Integrated Rise-Time method were implemented digitally to discriminate between neutrons and gamma rays emitted by a Cf-252 source. In both methods, the neutron-gamma discrimination capabilities of the four photomultiplier tubes were quantitatively compared by evaluating their figure-of-merit values at different energy regions between 50 keVee and 1000 keVee. Additionally, the results were further verified qualitatively using time-of-flight to distinguish gamma rays and neutrons. The results consistently show that photomultiplier tubes R11833-100 and ET9390kb generally perform best regarding neutron-gamma discrimination with only slight differences in figure-of-merit values. This superiority can be explained by their relatively higher photoelectron yield, which indicates that a scintillator detector coupled to a photomultiplier tube with higher photoelectron yield tends to result in better neutron-gamma discrimination performance. The results of this work will provide reference for the choice of photomultiplier tubes for future neutron detector arrays like NEDA.

  • Lifetime measurements in neutron-rich Co-63,Co-65 isotopes using the AGATA demonstrator
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 88:4, s. 044326-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifetimes of the low-lying (11/2(-)) states in Co-63,Co-65 have been measured employing the recoil distance doppler shift method (RDDS) with the AGATA gamma-ray array and the PRISMA mass spectrometer. These nuclei were populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction by bombarding a U-238 target with a beam of Ni-64. The experimental B(E2) reduced transition probabilities for Co-63,Co-65 are well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations that predict a constant trend of the B(E2) values up to the N = 40 Co-67 isotope.

  • Identification and rejection of scattered neutrons in AGATA
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 735, s. 267-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • gamma Rays and neutrons, emitted following spontaneous fission of Cf-252, were measured in an AGATA experiment performed at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy. The setup consisted of four AGATA triple cluster detectors (12 36 fold segmented high purity germanium crystals), placed at a distance of 50 cm from the source, and 16 HELENA BaF2 detectors. The aim of the experiment was to study the interaction of neutrons in the segmented high purity germanium detectors of AGATA and to investigate the possibility to discriminate neutrons and gamma rays with the gamma-ray tracking technique. The BaF2 detectors were used for a time measurement, which gave an independent discrimination of neutrons and gamma rays and which was used to optimise the gamma-ray tracking based neutron rejection methods. It was found that standard gamma-ray tracking, without any additional neutron rejection features, eliminates effectively most of the interaction points clue to recoiling Ge nuclei after elastic scattering of neutrons. Standard Cracking rejects also a significant amount of the events due to inelastic scattering of neutrons in the germanium crystals. Further enhancements of the neutron rejection was obtained by setting conditions on the following quantities, which were evaluated for each event by the Cracking algorithm: energy of the first and second interaction point, difference in the calculated incoming direction of the gamma ray, and figure-of-merit value. The experimental results of Cracking with neutron rejection agree rather well with GEANT4 simulations.

  • Design and Test of a High-Speed Flash ADC Mezzanine Card for High-Resolution and Timing Performance in Nuclear Structure Experiments
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499 .- 1558-1578. ; 60:5, s. 3526-3531
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work describes new electronics for the EX-OGAM2 (HP-Ge detector array) and NEDA (BC501A-based neutron detector array). A new digitizing card with high resolution has been designed for gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy experiments. The higher bandwidth requirement of the NEDA signals, together with the necessity for accuracy, require a high sampling rate in order to preserve the shape for real-time Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA). The PSA is of paramount importance for the NEDA to discriminate between neutrons and gamma-ray signals. Both high resolution and high speed parameters are often difficult to achieve in a single electronic unit. These constraints, together with the need to build new digitizing electronics to improve performance and flexibility of signal analysis in nuclear physics experiments, led to the development a new FADC mezzanine card. In this work, the design and development are described, including the characterization procedure and the preliminary measurement results.

  • Study of the Order-to-Chaos transition in 174 W with the AGATA-Demonstrator
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. ; 366:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transition between order and chaos is studied in the warm rotating nucleus 174 W by γ-spectroscopy, focusing on the conservation of selection rules of the K quantum number with the excitation energy, where K is the projection of the total angular momentum on the symmetry axis. The 174 W nucleus was populated by the fusion-evaporation reaction of 80 Ti (at 217 MeV) on a 128 Te backed target. The measurement was performed in July 2010 at Legnaro National Laboratories of INFN using the AGATA Demonstrator HPGe-array coupled to an array of 27 BaF 2 scintillators, named Helena. The data analysis concentrates on γ-γ coincidence matrices selecting the γ-decay flow populating low- K and high- K structures. By a statistical fluctuation analysis the total number of low- K and high- K bands can be evaluated as a function of excitation energy. Comparisons with cranked shell model calculations at finite temperature are used to extract information on the onset of the chaotic regime as a function of excitation energy.
