  • Greek sculpture as a tool in understanding the phenomenon of movement quality
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 8:3, s. 227-236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has shown that movement quality may be described as offering a general impression of a whole unified person, understood as a relation between postural stability, free breathing and awareness, which combined produce a refinement of movement as well as enhancing well-being. The phenomenon could further be structured in terms of four movement dimensions: structural, physiological, psychological/relational and a purely human dimension. So far we have little knowledge about these dimensions. The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of the phenomenon of movement quality through close observation of Greek sculpture, reflection and literature studies relating to Greek sculpture. The aim was to see if these methods could be a tool for achievement of a deeper understanding of movement quality, in clinical observation and reasoning. A phenomenological method was used to study the essence of the phenomenon of movement quality. A study of Greek sculpture was chosen because of the way ancient Greek sculptors sought to express several dimensions of human existence. The results show that close observation, reflection and literature studies of Greek sculptures deepened the knowledge of the four dimensions of movement quality and provided a way in which this knowledge could be expressed in words. These methods may represent a tool for achieving a deeper understanding of movement quality in clinical observation and reasoning.

  • Basic elements and dimensions to the phenomenon of quality of movement : case study
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 7:4, s. 251-260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quality of movement is frequently referred to as a phenomenon in the European movement tradition, underlining the close connection between outer expression and inner, lived experience. Within physical therapy little is clarified about the phenomenon from the point of view of lived experience. A case study has been undertaken focusing on the lived experience of the phenomenon, searching for basic elements and dimensions. An interpretive phenomenological approach was the method chosen for research. A qualitative interview was conducted involving one movement expert with an understanding and knowledge of the phenomenon. Analysis of the data revealed three levels of views on the quality of movement: basic elements and dimensions, functional use and personal integration. The phenomenon could be understood by the relation between three key elements, postural stability, free breathing and awareness; all contributing to a refinement in movement as well as a greater experience of well-being. The key elements were considered prerequisites to a four-dimensional therapeutic approach involving personal integration of bodily and mental aspects in movement. The basic element and dimensions of the phenomenon of quality of movement can be regarded as a starting point for research in this area.

  • Therapeutically efficient components of Basic Body Awareness Therapy as perceived by experienced therapists : a qualitative study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 21:3, s. 503-508
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundBasic Body Awareness Therapy (BBAT) is a physiotherapeutic method used in rehabilitation to increase physical and emotional balance. The aim was to identify and describe perceived therapeutically efficient components of BBAT.MethodsTwenty-four experienced BBAT therapists participated in focus group interviews. The data were analysed with content analysis.ResultsOne central theme, the therapeutic space consisted of two categories; the therapeutic encounter and the therapeutic tools, which emerged as the core of the perceived therapeutically efficient components. The therapeutic encounter entailed the therapeutic approach, affect attunement, continuous interaction during treatment, affect mirroring and communicating by use of a person-centred approach. The therapeutic tools included adjustment and adaptation, the use of manual, verbal and non-verbal guiding, and creating an atmosphere of safety and sanctuary.ConclusionThe significance of interaction by use of a person-centred approach combined with the ability to continuously adjust the treatment constituted useful guidelines when designing rehabilitation using BBAT treatment.

  • Multifidus muscle size changes at different directions of head and neck movements in females with unilateral chronic non-specific neck pain and healthy subjects using ultrasonography
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - : Churchill Livingstone. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 22:3, s. 560-565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the dimensions of cervical multifidus muscle (CMM) in different conditions.METHODS: Twenty five women with neck pain and 25 healthy subjects participated in this study. The dimensions of the CMM were measured at rest, 50% and 100% maximum isometric voluntary contraction (MIVC) at six directions of neck movements, using ultrasonography.RESULTS: The size of multifidus was smaller in patients than healthy individuals at rest state (P < 0.05). A significant smaller CMM dimension was found in the affected side compared with unaffected side in patients group (P < 0.05). The result of ANOVA for MLD showed a significant difference for contraction levels (P < 0.001) and neck movements (P < 0.001) in both groups. The MLD of the CMM was significantly different between CMM at rest and 50%, and 100% MIVC (P < 0.001). No significant differences were found between the groups at 50% and 100% MIVC (P > 0.05 in both instances). The most prominent CMM size change was observed during neck extension, flexion, ipsilateral lateral-flexion, and ipsilateral rotation, respectively (P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Results of the present study indicate that the size of CMM was decreased in patients with neck pain in rest state. The size of CMM changes in all directions of neck movements, although the most prominent was during neck extension. This points out CMM stabilization role's in different directions of neck movements.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 35, s. 38-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) is a useful tool that has been evaluated for its reliability in patients with vestibular disorders, elderly people and, in chronic stroke population. Present study was aimed to evaluate the intrarater and interrater reliability of the DGI to measure dynamic balance and gait performance in stroke patients with eye movement disorders. Methods: A sample of 30 stroke patients suffering from eye movement disorders were recruited. Two Physical therapists assessed the intrarater and interrater reliability of the DGI in two testing sessions three days apart. In the later session, two raters assessed the patients' performance simultaneously on the DGI. The reliability was calculated using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC2, 1). Standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimal detectable change (MDC95) at 95% confidence interval were also calculated. A significance level was set at p-value <0.05. Results: The (ICC2, 1) for intrarater and interrater reliability of total DGI scores was 0.86 and 0.91 respectively. While (ICC2, 1) for intrarater and interrater reliability of individual items ranged from 0.73 to 0.91 to 0.73–0.93, respectively. The (SEM) and (MDC95) for intrarater reliability of total DGI scores were 0.76 and 2.10, respectively. Corresponding values for interrater reliability were 0.62 and 1.71, respectively. Conclusions: The DGI is a reliable tool for evaluating the dynamic balance and gait performance in stroke patients with eye movement disorders. This tool showed good to excellent intrarater and interrater reliability of total DGI scores and moderate to good intrarater and interrater reliability of individual items of the DGI.

  • Anterior cruciate ligament: A brief narrative review of main risk factors for injury and re-injury
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF BODYWORK AND MOVEMENT THERAPIES. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 38, s. 92-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is one of the main injuries in professional and amateur athletes of different sports. Hundreds of thousands of ACL ruptures occurs annually, and only 55% of the athletes return to competitive level, with a 15 times higher chance of suffering a second injury. 60% of these injuries occur without physical contact and since they occur in the acute process, they can cause joint effusion, muscle weakness and functional incapacity. In the long term, they can contribute to a premature process of osteoarthritis. This narrative review is of particular interest for clinicians, practitioners, coaches and athletes to understand the main factors that contribute to an injury and/or re-injury and thus, to optimize their training to reduce and/or prevent the risk of injury and/or reinjury of ACL. Therefore, we aimed reports a narrative overview of the literature surrounding communication and explore through a theoretical review, the main risk factors for an ACL injury and/or re-injury, as well as bringing practical and correct methods of training applications. The lack of theoretical/practical knowledge on the part of rehabilitation and/or training professionals may impair the treatment of an athlete and/or student. High-quality research that can testing different training methods approaches in randomized controlled trials is needed.

  • Measurement properties of the Body Awareness Scale Movement Quality (BAS MQ) in persons on the autism spectrum : A preliminary Rasch analysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - : Churchill Livingstone. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 38, s. 464-473
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Persons on the autism spectrum exhibit poorer body awareness than neurotypical persons. Since movement quality may be regarded as an expression of body awareness, assessment of movement quality is important. Sound assessments of measurement properties are essential if reliable decisions about body awareness interventions for persons on the autism spectrum are to be made, but there is insufficient research. Objective: To assess measurement properties of the Body Awareness Scale Movement Quality (BAS MQ) in an autism and a neurotypical reference group. Methods: Persons on the autism spectrum (n=108) and neurotypical references (n=32) were included. All were assessed with BAS MQ. Data were analyzed according to the Rasch model. Results: BAS MQ was found to have acceptable unidimensionality, supported by the fit statistics. The hierarchical ordering showed that coordination ability was the most difficult, followed by stability and relating. Response category functioning worked as intended for 19 out of 23 items. There were few difficult items, which decreased targeting. Reliability measures were good. BAS MQ discriminated between the autism and the reference groups, with the autism group exhibiting poorer movement quality, reflecting clinical observations and previous research. Conclusions: BAS MQ was found to have acceptable measurement properties, though suffering from problems with targeting item difficulty to person ability for persons on the autism spectrum. The BAS MQ may, along with experienced movement quality, contribute to clinically relevant information of persons on the autism spectrum, although we encourage refinements and further analyses to improve its measurement properties.

  • Patient-reported improvements of pain, disability, and health-related quality of life following chiropractic care for back pain - A national observational study in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 23:2, s. 241-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Chiropractic care is a common but not often investigated treatment option for back pain in Sweden. The aim of this study was to explore patient-reported outcomes (PRO) for patients with back pain seeking chiropractic care in Sweden.METHODS: Prospective observational study. Patients 18 years and older, with non-specific back pain of any duration, seeking care at 23 chiropractic clinics throughout Sweden were invited to answer PRO questionnaires at baseline with the main follow-up after four weeks targeting the following outcomes: Numerical Rating Scale for back pain intensity (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index for back pain disability (ODI), health-related quality of life (EQ-5D index) and a visual analogue scale for self-rated health (EQ VAS).RESULTS: 246 back pain patients answered baseline questionnaires and 138 (56%) completed follow-up after four weeks. Statistically significant improvements over the four weeks were reported for all PRO by acute back pain patients (n = 81), mean change scores: NRS -2.98 (p < 0.001), ODI -13.58 (p < 0.001), EQ VAS 9.63 (p < 0.001), EQ-5D index 0.22 (p < 0.001); and for three out of four PRO for patients with chronic back pain (n = 57), mean change scores: NRS -0.90 (p = 0.002), ODI -2.88 (p = 0.010), EQ VAS 3.77 (p = 0.164), EQ-5D index 0.04 (p = 0.022).CONCLUSIONS: Patients with acute and chronic back pain reported statistically significant improvements in PRO four weeks after initiated chiropractic care. Albeit the observational study design limits causal inference, the relatively rapid improvements of PRO scores warrant further clinical investigations.

    • IntroductionBody awareness is a movement therapy used in Physical Therapy in Mental Health especially in Scandinavia. The method Basic Body Awareness Therapy has been scientifically investigated in particular for patients with Depression, Schizophrenia and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD).MethodsThirty-four Physical Therapists from 13 countries working with the Basic Body Awareness Therapy method in Mental Health Care were interviewed in six focus groups about what effects they have experienced in their work with patients. The Physical Therapists worked within the whole Mental Health spectra. Content analysis was used to analyze the informants’ experiences of the clinical effects of body awareness.ResultsFive categories emerged: To be in contact, Refocus and coping, Sense of Self, Relations to others and Daily life activities. The results are discussed in relation to previous research, existing theories of body awareness and cognitive neuroscience and findings of experimental psychology.ConclusionThe informants experienced that Basic Body Awareness Therapy worked mainly by helping the patients to be in better contact with their “bodily self.” Stability, balance, improved grounding and the ability to relax were understood as the basis to establish an improved sense of self and leading to improved acceptance of oneself and one’s ability to relate to others.

  • Ingår i: Journal of bodywork and movement therapies. - Amsterdam : Elsevier BV. - 1532-9283 .- 1360-8592. ; 13:1, s. 43-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A total of 24 patients, considerably disabled in daily activities by back pain, participated in an Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT) programme. The patients also had several health problems in addition to their current pain. The programme emphasised the principles of body awareness. The study is aimed at investigating not only whether symptom reduction would be achieved, but also at identifying qualities of EAT that were particularly beneficial for the patients' well being. The study was performed according to action research principles. The treatment reduced the pain and lessened other symptoms. The EAT also had an influence on the patients' self-image and a positive chain of effects was observed. The consequences were described according to four dimensions; the dimension of body awareness, competence, emotion and environment. The dimensions were interrelated having the simultaneous influence of a transition process and symptom reduction towards health.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 26, s. 364-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Equine Assisted Physiotherapy (EAPT) offers children with cerebral palsy (CP) opportunities for new movement experiences, and may influence movement qualities. Descriptions of how, and to what extent EAPT affects trunk control is missing. The aim of this study was to explore if, and how changes in trunk control and changes in other movement aspects were observable in children with CP during EAPT, and if potential changes in trunk control could be measured.Method: A multiple case study with a mixed methods design was completed. Two children with CP, GMFCS grade 1, were observed using video during a period of six months, and tested with Trunk Impairment Scale modified Norwegian Version. Skilled physiotherapists analyzed the videos qualitatively, and triangulated recurring changes in movement with the results from the test. Results: Riding bareback, improvements in trunk control were observed and measured. However, riding in a saddle led to reduced trunk control. Other observable movement changes were: from asymmetry to symmetry, adaptation to rhythm, mastery of riding skills, and reduced loss of postural control. Increased instances of adapting own movements in spontaneous dialogue with the horse, were observed. Instructions and feedback from the therapist influenced the dialogue with the horse both positively and negatively. Conclusion: This study describes in detail how balance and symmetry can be stimulated during EAPT in a body characterized by imbalance and asymmetry. During EAPT, the children gained the possibility to explore new movement qualities. Equipment and feedback influenced movement qualities. (C) 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • Affective responses to qigong: A pilot study of regular practitioners
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 17:2, s. 177-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single sessions of Qigong have been associated with increased positive affect/emotional benefits. In the present study the aim was to refine the present understanding by using newly developed research methodologies. Therefore, affective reactions were studied in a group performing Qigong through pre-, during, and post-assessments using a modified version of the short Swedish Core Affect Scale complemented with open-ended questions. Affect was measured on a group and individual level. The results showed a shift during Qigong toward increased pleasant activated and deactivated affect in the group of 46 women who regularly practice Qigong. Inter-individual responses displayed positive affective responses, which also increased as the bout proceeded for the majority of practitioners. Acknowledging some limitations, these findings have practical implications for the enhancement of positive affect and subjective well-being.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 13:2, s. 205-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adherence to exercise is paramount if desired health effects are to be achieved. Drop out rates in excess of 50% have been reported, with the intensity of the exercise performed frequently blamed. Qigong is a low-intensity mind-body technique that may offer an alternative to more intense modes of exercise. The aim of this study was therefore to determine if exercise motives, exercise intention, age, stress and energy levels predict adherence to qigong exercise. Participants (n=87) were assessed by self-rated retrospective physical activity behavior, by performed Qigong exercise and Concentration level, and by Sport Motivation Scale, Planned Behavior Questionnaire, and Stress and Energy Scale. Exercise intention, Age and Stress predicted Exercise frequency (R2 = .29); when level of Concentration (a non-baseline assessment) was included as a predictor, prediction strength increased (R2 = .38). Results suggest that health-professionals who are aiming to secure activity adherence and exercise frequency, should focus on strengthening the individual’s intention to exercise, promoting a calm energy state before commencement of exercise, and encouraging a heightened level of concentration during exercise.

    • Sara, the participant in this single case study, had to leave work due to burnout. She is now recovered and working, but still complains ofdisturbed moods and worries about getting burned out again. The aim of this study was to, by way of Qigong and mindfulness exercise, increase the participant’s positive mood to a functional level and to increase exercise experiences by combining mindfulness and Qigong practice. The professional practice intervention was planned to last twelve weeks, combining mindfulness practice and three different Qigong exercise techniques. Exercise behavior was noted daily, stress-energy and wellness were followed up weekly, and mindfulness was followed up after four, nine and 12 weeks. Sara feels that her moods (more energy, wellness and joy, as well as less stress and worry) have stabilized at a high level (good to very good), and her mindfulness score also improved to a high level (4.2 on a six-point scale). Sara also states that she enjoys life more: accepts stressful situations as they are, is less worried about becoming burned out again, and is more open to life. Exercise professionals may use mindfulness practice and Qigong exercise when recovering moods, probably even better in preventing burnout syndromes.

    • Objective: Modern hatha yoga exercises (YE) provide an alternative form of physical activity which may reduce stress, facilitate recovery and improve health. This study investigated the short-term effects of high intensity hatha yoga exercises (HIY) on health-related outcomes. Methods: A 6-week randomized controlled study was performed to compare HIY with a control group not changing their exercise behavior. Healthy students (N = 44; median age: 25 years, range 20–39 years; HIY: n = 21, including 3 men; control group: n = 23, including 3 men) novice to yoga participated in the intervention which included one weekly class and recommended home training. Participants provided self-reports in questionnaires before and after the intervention. Self-reports included anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), stress (Perceived Stress Scale), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index), subjective health complaints (Common Symptoms in General Practice Index) and self-rated health (single-item).Results: After the 6-week intervention, there were no between-group differences in anxiety, depression, stress, sleep or self-rated health. However, when investigating associations within the HIY-group, a higher HIY-dose was related to less depression (r = 0.47; p = 0.03), improved sleep quality (r = 0.55; p = 0.01), and less insomnia (r = 0.49; p = 0.02).Conclusions: There were no short-term between-group effects of HIY on mental distress, sleep or self-rated health. However, within the HIY-group, a higher dose was associated with improved mental health in terms of depression and with improved sleep. Although future studies with larger samples are needed, these preliminary findings suggest short-term positive effects of HIY on health-related outcomes among students.Trial registration number NCT01305096.

    • Introduction: Daytime tiredness is a risk factor for poor health and well-being in the short and long term and is often associated with sleep problems, stress-related mental health complaints and decreased school functioning. This study investigates the effect of an 8 month dance intervention study on daytime tiredness, alertness, sleep duration, sleep quality and school satisfaction. Methods: Randomized controlled intervention study that included a total of 112 girls aged 13-18 years old with stress-related mental health problems. Dance intervention with focus on enjoyment were performed semiweekly for 8 months. Questionnaire-based measurements regarding self-reported daytime tiredness, alertness, school satisfaction, sleep duration and quality were evaluated at baseline and at 8-, 12- and 20- month follow-ups.Results: Daytime tiredness decreased significantly in the dance group compared to control group at all follow-ups. Alertness increased significant within the dance group, but there were no significant difference compared to the controls. Significant improvements were found in all sleep quality items within the dance group, between groups only one significant result was found. No conclusive changes in sleep duration were observed. School satisfaction increased significantly in the dance intervention group; however, its significance compared to that of the control group faded after adjustment for differences between groups at baseline. Conclusions: This study suggests that a dance intervention focusing on enjoyment can be effective in decreasing daytime tiredness. This study also adds to the growing body of evidence for the benefits of using nonpharmacological interventions to decrease stress-related problems among adolescents.

  • Effectiveness of manual therapy interventions in cystic fibrosis care: a pilot study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF BODYWORK AND MOVEMENT THERAPIES. - 1360-8592 .- 1532-9283. ; 39, s. 323-329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a severe genetic condition that affects multiple organ systems and imposes a substantial treatment burden. Regarding the lungs and airways, the progressive pathophysiological changes place a significant strain on the musculoskeletal components of the respiratory system for people with CF. This pilot study investigated the effectiveness of manual therapy interventions (MTIs) on thoracic mobility, respiratory muscle strength, lung function, and musculoskeletal pain. Method: A study with a pretest-posttest design was conducted with 15 eligible people with CF at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital CF Centre. After an initial set of diagnostic tests at baseline, the participants underwent eight weekly 30-min MTIs. The MTIs included passive joint mobilisation and soft tissue manipulation of primary and secondary anatomical areas of the musculoskeletal respiratory system. On the day of the final intervention, the baseline measurements were repeated. Results: Trends of increased thoracic mobility were observed following the intervention, with a statistically significant increase in respiratory muscle strength. No change in lung function was observed. Musculoskeletal pain before and after the intervention showed a significant decrease in tender points, and all participants reported positive experiences with MTIs. Conclusion: MTIs may improve thoracic mobility, alleviate pain, and enhance respiratory muscle strength in people with CF. Further research is needed to confirm their potential role as a CF physiotherapy supplement. Clinical trial id: NCT04696198.

  • Ingår i: Journal of bodywork and movement therapies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-9283 .- 1360-8592. ; 21:1, s. 101-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Assessment in manual therapy includes quantitative and qualitative procedures, and intervertebral motion palpation (IMP) is one of the core assessment methods in osteopathic practice. The aim of this study was to explore osteopathic practitioners' experiences of clinical decision-making and IMP as a diagnostic tool for planning and evaluation of osteopathic interventions. The study was conducted with semi-structured interviews that included eight informants. Content analysis was used as the analytical procedure. In total, three categories emerged from the analysis: strategic decision-making, diagnostic usability of IMP, and treatment applicability of IMP.The study indicated that IMP was considered relevant and was given particular importance in cases where IMP findings confirmed clinical information attained from other stages in the diagnostic process as a whole. However, IMP findings were experienced as less important if they were not correlated to other findings.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - 1360-8592. ; 7:4, s. 251-260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quality of movement is frequently referred to as a phenomenon in the European movement tradition, underlining a close connection between outer expression and inner, lived experience. Within physical therapy little is clarified about the phenomenon from the point of view of lived experience. A case study was done searching for basic elements and dimensions of the phenomenon. An interpretive phenomenological approach was used. A qualitative interview was conducted with one movement expert with an understanding of the phenomenon. Analysis showed three levels of quality of movement; basic elements and dimensions, functional use and personal integration. The phenomenon could be understood by the relation between three key elements; postural stability, free breathing and awareness. The key elements were considered prerequisites to a four-dimensional approach involving personal integration of bodily and mental aspects in movements. The basic elements and dimensions of the phenomenon of quality of

  • Therapeutically efficient components of Basic Body Awareness Therapy as perceived by experienced therapists : a qualitative study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1360-8592. ; 21:3, s. 503-508
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Basic Body Awareness Therapy (BBAT) is a physiotherapeutic method used in rehabilitation to increase physical and emotional balance. The aim was to identify and describe perceived therapeutically efficient components of BBAT. Methods Twenty-four experienced BBAT therapists participated in focus group interviews. The data were analysed with content analysis. Results One central theme, the therapeutic space consisted of two categories; the therapeutic encounter and the therapeutic tools, which emerged as the core of the perceived therapeutically efficient components. The therapeutic encounter entailed the therapeutic approach, affect attunement, continuous interaction during treatment, affect mirroring and communicating by use of a person-centred approach. The therapeutic tools included adjustment and adaptation, the use of manual, verbal and non-verbal guiding, and creating an atmosphere of safety and sanctuary. Conclusion The significance of interaction by use of a person-centred approach combined with the ability to continuously adjust the treatment constituted useful guidelines when designing rehabilitation using BBAT treatment.

  • Measurement properties of the Body Awareness Scale Movement Quality (BAS MQ) in persons on the autism spectrum : A preliminary Rasch analysis
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. - 1360-8592. ; 38, s.

  • Motivation for change and personal resources in patients with prolonged musculoskeletal disorders
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - 1360-8592. ; , s. 160-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this qualitative 2-year follow-up study was to obtain a deeper understanding of motivation for change towards an active and independent life in patients with prolonged musculoskeletal disorders and to explore and identify personal resources that might influence such improvements. Data collection and analysis were performed according to the qualitative case study design. An initial conceptual framework was developed to bound and guide the study. Twenty patients were selected using purposive sampling with respect to motivational level (highly to latently motivated) to create a sample of maximum variety. Data were collected using repeated interviews and additional quantitative instruments (health-related quality of life, body image, movement ability, postural control, pain rating). The study comprised three data collection periods. Motivation for change was associated with the use of personal resources. The central themes to emerge were body awareness, self-focus, locus of control and coping ability. The results emphasized the indivisible unity of body and mind. The efficacy of rehabilitation might improve if the individual's own resources were taken into account.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1360-8592. ; 14:3, s. 245-254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Basic Body Awareness Therapy (BBAT) is a physiotherapeutic treatment method that is commonly used in Scandinavian mental health services. However, for patients with schizophrenia, there are few studies that verify the effectiveness of BBAT, or explain which dysfunctions or disabilities BBAT has an effect on in this group of patients. The aim of the present study was thus to describe patients' experiences of BBAT, focusing on perceived main treatment effects. The areas of perceived effects are to be investigated in future research. METHOD: In a qualitative study, eight patients with schizophrenia were interviewed. The interview transcriptions were analysed with content analysis methodology. RESULT: Patients with schizophrenia report positive treatment effects of physiotherapy with BBAT. Four main categories were identified: affect regulation, body awareness and self-esteem, effects described in a social context and effects on the ability to think. These should be targeted in a future randomized and controlled study.

  • Shall we use cryotherapy in the treatment in surgical procedures, in acute pain or injury, or in long term pain or dysfunction? - A systematic review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1360-8592. ; 27, s. 368-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This review aimed to evaluate the certainty of evidence for the use of cryotherapy in patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and AMED were searched from January 2000 to January 2018 (update June 2019) for systematic reviews (SRs) and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting outcomes on pain, swelling, range of motion (ROM), function, blood loss, analgesic use, patient satisfaction and adverse advents. The papers were categorised into: surgical procedures, acute pain or injury and long-term pain or dysfunction. Methodological quality and risk of bias were assessed using the AMSTAR and the Swedish Health Technology Assessment instruments. Level of certainty of evidence was synthesized using GRADE. Study selection: Eight SRs and 50 RCTs from a total of 6027 ( thorn 839) were included. In total 34 studies evaluated cryotherapy in surgical procedures, twelve evaluated cryotherapy use in acute pain or injury and twelve studies evaluated cryotherapy in long-term pain and dysfunction. Results: The certainty of evidence is moderate (GRADE III) after surgical procedures to reduce pain, improve ROM, for patient satisfaction and few adverse events are reported. Cryotherapy in acute pain and injury or long-term pain and dysfunction show positive effects but have a higher number of outcomes with low certainty of evidence (GRADE II). Conclusion: Cryotherapy may safely be used in musculoskeletal injuries and dysfunctions. It is well tolerated by patients. More advanced forms of cryotherapy may accentuate the effect. Future research is needed where timing, temperature for cooling, dose (time) and frequency are evaluated. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Pain requires processing – How the experience of pain is influenced by Basic Body Awareness Therapy in patients with long-term pain
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1360-8592. ; 23:4, s. 701-707
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purpose: Long-term pain is common and entails large costs to society. One physiotherapy treatment with documented positive effects for patients with long-term pain is Basic Body Awareness therapy (BBAT). However, studies are lacking about patients' experience of BBAT's influence on their pain. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate how patients experience BBAT's influence on their long-term pain. Methods: For this qualitative interview study, participants were selected from two supervised BBAT groups. To qualify for the study, participants had to meet two inclusion criteria: having pain for at least 6 months, and attending BBAT for at least 6 months. Six females between the ages of 25 and 61 years were included. Pain duration ranged from 9 to 20 years, and duration of practicing BBAT ranged from 8 to 120 months. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and qualitative content analysis was performed. Results: The analysis revealed four main categories of BBAT experience: increases motivation, requires processing, increases control over pain and changes attitude to oneself, body and pain. Discussion: Patients with long-term pain experienced BBAT as being helpful in processing their pain because they were forced to face the pain instead of trying to ignore it. Participants experienced a decrease in pain through development of an increased sense of control as well as a changed attitude to themselves, their bodies and their pain. It is important for physiotherapists to understand that pain can increase during BBAT and to support the patients in this process during the therapy. © 2019 The Authors

  • Bodily symptoms in patients with post traumatic stress disorder : A comparative study of traumatized refugees, Danish war veterans, and healthy controls
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1360-8592. ; 21:3, s. 523-527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with increased general health symptoms and patients suffer from numerous bodily complaints such as increased pain, increased muscular tension, and restricted breathing. Methods and material: This study applied the Body Awareness Movement Quality and Experience scale (BAS MQ-E) in assessing and comparing bodily symptoms, including movement function, in traumatized refugees (N = 14) and Danish war veterans with PTSD (N = 19) and healthy controls (N = 20). Results: Patients with PTSD had significantly poorer stability, balance, flexibility and coordination in movement, had more muscular tension, more complaints of pain, more restricted breathing, and more limitation in function of daily life than healthy controls. Conclusion: The BAS MQ-E was found to be an applicable and useful measure of bodily symptoms in patients with PTSD. Further research may add to the validity of BAS MQ-E and might be considered in future studies evaluating the efficacy of physiotherapy for patients with PTSD.

  • Resolving anterior hip pain in a young male footballer following arthroscopic surgery for Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome: A case report
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1360-8592. ; 24:1, s. 63-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There appear to be limited studies available regarding the conservative management of patients following hip joint arthroscopic surgery, or investigating reasons for which patients still report hip and groin pain post surgery. Objectives: Treatment was applied to restore spino-pelvic mechanics and to reduce soft tissue restrictions in hip joint motion. Neuromuscular movement control and work capacity exercises were encouraged to support the integrity of the hip joint and spino-pelvic complex. Clinical features: A 22-year-old male footballer, (height 190cm and weight 82kg) presented reporting an eighteen-month history of hip and groin pain, having previously undergone bilateral arthroscopic surgery twelve months earlier for Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome. Strength measurements were recorded using the MicroFET 2 Wireless Digital Handheld Dynamometer. Trunk muscular endurance was evaluated with Sorenson test. Results: Five treatment consultations over a five-week period resulted in pain reduction, (Visual Analogue Scale 8/10 to 0/10). Improvement in range of motion, right hip flexion (70–100°) and left (80–100°), right internal rotation (30–45°) and left (40–45°). Improvement in strength, specifically right hip flexion (0.29–0.43Nm/kg, 48%) and right hip abduction (0.35–0.46Nm/kg, 31%). Improvement in trunk muscular endurance increased 41% from 170 seconds to 240 seconds. Conclusion: This case report supports the rationale that the post arthroscopic management of Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome, should include both treatment to address spino-pelvic restrictions, if appropriate, combined with exercises that specifically target hip flexor strength. However, a larger randomized study would provide a clearer understanding for the management of this particular subset of patients. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd
