  • Spatial structure of the decapeptide Val-Ile-Lys-Lys-Ser-Thr-Ala-Leu-Leu-Gly in water and in a complex with sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Applied Magnetic Resonance. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0937-9347 .- 1613-7507. ; 41:2-4, s. 267-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the spatial structure of the decapeptide Val-Ile-Lys-Lys-Ser-Thr-Ala-Leu-Leu-Gly in aqueous solution and in a complex with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and two-dimensional (2-D) NMR spectroscopy (total correlation spectroscopy and nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY)). The approach used to determine the decapeptide spatial structure was based on analysis of the 1H–13C residual dipolar couplings in the molecules partially aligned in lyotropic liquid crystalline media. Analysis of the interproton distances obtained from the 2-D NOESY NMR spectrum was used to reveal the spatial structure of the decapeptide in a complex with SDS micelles. Complex formation was confirmed by analysis of 1H chemical shifts in the NMR spectrum of the decapeptide and analysis of the signs and values of NOEs in a solution with SDS micelles.

  • The evolution of surface flow stripes and stratigraphic folds within Kamb Ice Stream : why don't they match?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Glaciology. - : International Glaciological Society. - 0022-1430 .- 1727-5652. ; 54:186, s. 421-427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Flow stripes seen in satellite imagery of ice streams and ice shelves are caused by surface undulations with kilometer-scale spacing and meter-scale relief and generally indicate current or recent fast ice flow. On a similar scale, folding of internal ice stratigraphy depicted in cross-flow icepenetrating radar profiles is also a common occurrence in ice streams, suggesting a possible relationship between the two sets of features. We have traced surface flow stripes in RADARSAT and MODIS imagery on Kamb Ice Stream, West Antarctica, from the onset of streaming flow into the near-stagnant trunk. We compare the morphology and evolution of the surface flow stripes to the folds seen in the internal stratigraphy in cross-ice-stream radar profiles. We find essentially no correspondence in the observed locations or spacings between the radar internal layer folds at depths greater than 100 m and the flow stripes on the surface. The gap in the radar data and the surface mappings in the top 100m of firn prevents a precise depiction of how the flow stripes and fold patterns at depth diverge. We explore hypotheses about how flow stripes and internal stratigraphic folds can originate and evolve differently as ice flows downstream. We suggest that flow stripes are subject to surface processes that can modify their morphology independently of the internal stratigraphy, leading to changes in the pattern of flow stripes relative to the internal layers below.

  • The experimental facility for the Search for Hidden Particles at the CERN SPS
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1748-0221. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 GeV/c proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector [1-3]. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility developed by the SHiP Collaboration is based on a number of key features and developments which provide the possibility of probing a large part of the parameter space for a wide range of models with light long-lived super-weakly interacting particles with masses up to O(10) GeV/c(2) in an environment of extremely clean background conditions. This paper describes the proposal for the experimental facility together with the most important feasibility studies. The paper focuses on the challenging new ideas behind the beam extraction and beam delivery, the proton beam dump, and the suppression of beam-induced background.

  • The magnet of the scattering and neutrino detector for the SHiP experiment at CERN
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 15:01
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment proposal at CERN demands a dedicated dipole magnet for its scattering and neutrino detector. This requires a very large volume to be uniformly magnetized at B > 1.2 T, with constraints regarding the inner instrumented volume as well as the external region, where no massive structures are allowed and only an extremely low stray field is admitted. In this paper we report the main technical challenges and the relevant design options providing a comprehensive design for the magnet of the SHiP Scattering and Neutrino Detector.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 597:2-3, s. 178-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The time reconstruction performance of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter readout is studied. The contribution of the electronics to the time resolution is estimated to be about 20 ps, thus demonstrating the possibility of achieving a small constant term in the time resolution for particles. The resolution to electromagnetic showers produced by an electron beam is also measured. After correction for the effects due to the calorimeter geometry, a 100 ps constant term is found for a typical cell.

  • Fast simulation of muons produced at the SHiP experiment using Generative Adversarial Networks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1748-0221. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a fast approach to simulating muons produced in interactions of the SPS proton beams with the target of the SHiP experiment. The SHIP experiment will be able to search for new long-lived particles produced in a 400 GeV/c SPS proton beam dump and which travel distances between fifty metres and tens of kilometers. The SHiP detector needs to operate under ultra-low background conditions and requires large simulated samples of muon induced background processes. Through the use of Generative Adversarial Networks it is possible to emulate the simulation of the interaction of 400 GeV/c proton beams with the SHiP target, an otherwise computationally intensive process. For the simulation requirements of the SHiP experiment, generative networks are capable of approximating the full simulation of the dense fixed target, offering a speed increase by a factor of O(10(6)). To evaluate the performance of such an approach, comparisons of the distributions of reconstructed muon momenta in SHiP's spectrometer between samples using the full simulation and samples produced through generative models are presented. The methods discussed in this paper can be generalised and applied to modelling any non-discrete multi-dimensional distribution.

  • Sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to dark photons decaying to a pair of charged particles
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 81:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m(gamma)D and its mixing parameter with the photon, epsilon. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different productionmechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m. D ranging between 0.8 and 3.3(-0.5)(+0.2) GeV, and epsilon(2) ranging between 10(-11) and 10(-17).

  • Sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to light dark matter
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dark matter is a well-established theoretical addition to the Standard Model supported by many observations in modern astrophysics and cosmology. In this context, the existence of weakly interacting massive particles represents an appealing solution to the observed thermal relic in the Universe. Indeed, a large experimental campaign is ongoing for the detection of such particles in the sub-GeV mass range. Adopting the benchmark scenario for light dark matter particles produced in the decay of a dark photon, with αD = 0.1 and mA′ = 3mχ, we study the potential of the SHiP experiment to detect such elusive particles through its Scattering and Neutrino detector (SND). In its 5-years run, corresponding to 2 · 1020 protons on target from the CERN SPS, we find that SHiP will improve the current limits in the mass range for the dark matter from about 1 MeV to 300 MeV. In particular, we show that SHiP will probe the thermal target for Majorana candidates in most of this mass window and even reach the Pseudo-Dirac thermal relic.

  • "The Göteborg Quality of Life Instrument"--a psychometric evaluation of assessments of symptoms and well-being among women in a general population
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care. ; 11, s. 267-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Health Care Research Unit, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Goteborg, Sweden. OBJECTIVE--To examine with psychometric analysis techniques the potential for constructing valid composite variables of "The Göteborg Quality of Life Instruments". DESIGN--Prospective population study of women in 1974-75 and in 1980-81. SETTING--City of Göteborg, Sweden. PARTICIPANTS--Representative samples of the general population of women in five age strata between 44 and 66 years of age in 1974-75, followed 1980-81 including new cohorts of women aged 26 and 38. 1302 women were examined in 1974-75 and 1408 in 1980-81. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE--"The Göteborg Quality of Life instrument", constructed in the early 1970s to measure symptoms and well-being in a population study of men. RESULTS--Four multi-item scales were identified with satisfactory reliability and validity, i.e., they met defined criteria of multi-item scales and benefit from higher reliability than single questions. The psychological symptom scale comprised all ten questions intended to reflect depression and tension, while the physical symptom scale included all six pain questions, the general symptoms dizziness, breathlessness, and nausea, and general fatigue that belonged to both symptom scales. The social well-being scale comprises all well-being questions believed to reflect the broad concept of life satisfaction. The physical-mental wellbeing scale reflected satisfaction with both general and mental health. Several symptom and well-being questions were clearly outside the main clusters and should be treated as single items. CONCLUSIONS--Use of a few, distinct scales instead of a number of single questions should increase statistical power because the number of comparisons is greatly reduced and problems of chance findings are thus minimized. • Polymorphisms in metabolic genes related to tobacco smoke and the risk of gastric cancer in the European prospective investigation into cancer and nutrition
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention. - 1538-7755. ; 15:12, s. 2427-2434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metabolizing enzymes, which often display genetic polymorphisms, are involved in the activation of compounds present in tobacco smoke that may be relevant to gastric carcinogenesis. We report the results of a study looking at the association between risk of gastric adenocarcinoma and polymorphisms in genes CYP1A1, CYP1A2, EPHX1, and GSTT1. A nested case-control study was carried out within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, developed in 10 European countries. The study includes 243 newly diagnosed cases of histologically confirmed gastric adenocarcinoma and 946 controls matched by center, age, sex, and date of blood collection. Genotypes were determined in nuclear DNA from WBCs. We found an increased risk of gastric cancer for homozygotes for C (histidine) variant in Y113H of EPHX1 (odds ratio, 1.91; 95% confidence interval, 1.19-3.07) compared with subjects with TC/TT. There was also a significant increased risk for smokers carrying at least one variant allele A in Ex7+129C > A (m4) of CYP1A1 and never smokers with null GSTT1 and allele A in the locus -3859G > A of CYP1A2. Most of these genes are involved in the activation and detoxification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, suggesting a potential role of these compounds in gastric carcinogenesis.

  • Tissue-specific regulatory network extractor (TS-REX): a database and software resource for the tissue and cell type-specific investigation of transcription factor-gene networks.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nucleic Acids Research. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1362-4962 .- 0305-1048. ; 37:11, s. 82-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prediction of transcription factor binding sites in genomic sequences is in principle very useful to identify upstream regulatory factors. However, when applying this concept to genomes of multicellular organisms such as mammals, one has to deal with a large number of false positive predictions since many transcription factor genes are only expressed in specific tissues or cell types. We developed TS-REX, a database/software system that supports the analysis of tissue and cell type-specific transcription factor-gene networks based on expressed sequence tag abundance of transcription factor-encoding genes in UniGene EST libraries. The use of expression levels of transcription factor-encoding genes according to hierarchical anatomical classifications covering different tissues and cell types makes it possible to filter out irrelevant binding site predictions and to identify candidates of potential functional importance for further experimental testing. TS-REX covers ESTs from H. sapiens and M. musculus, and allows the characterization of both presence and specificity of transcription factors in user-specified tissues or cell types. The software allows users to interactively visualize transcription factor-gene networks, as well as to export data for further processing. TS-REX was applied to predict regulators of Polycomb group genes in six human tumor tissues and in human embryonic stem cells.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Foodservice. - : Wiley. - 1748-0140. ; 18:6, s. 238-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different meal contexts call for different meal solutions. With the aim of understanding how people reason when choosing what to eat for dinner and how ready meal solutions fit their demands in this meal situation, a focus group study was conducted. Although there is an image of the ideal dinner as being cooked and eaten together with the family, this often conflicts with reality and scarcity of time. The social setting was shown to be of utmost importance in the choice of cooking, place to eat and actual meal. Suggestions were given on how to improve the appropriateness of ready meals for consumption at dinner

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 91:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states in the neutron-deficient nuclei (163)(75) Re-88 and (165)(75) Re-90 were populated in the Cd-106(Ni-60, p2n gamma) and Mo-92(Kr-78, 3p2n gamma) fusion-evaporation reactions at bombarding energies of 270 and 380 MeV, respectively.. rays were detected at the target position using the JUROGAM spectrometer while recoiling ions were separated in-flight by the RITU gas-filled recoil separator and implanted in the GREAT spectrometer. The energy level schemes for Re-163 and Re-165 were identified using recoil-decay correlation techniques. At low spin, the yrast bands of these isotopes consist of signature partner bands based on a single pi h(11/2) quasiproton configuration. The bands display large energy splitting consistent with the soft triaxial shape typical of transitional nuclei above N = 82. The configurations of the excited states are proposed within the framework of the cranked shell model.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Migration History. - : Brill Academic Publishers. - 2351-9916 .- 2351-9924. ; 8:2 SI, s. 149-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Migration is a fundamental but often neglected chapter in the history of European peasant societies. Knowledge of migration in Medieval and Early Modern rural Europe adds significantly to our understanding of phenomena as diverse as serfdom, the land market, social stratification, the diffusion of agricultural practices, and responses to climate change. To advance this knowledge, we need to consult both documentary evidence and archaeological data, and study diverse parts of Europe. This special issue of the Journal of Migration History collects articles devoted to various aspects of mobility among peasants and its multiple meanings. Written by historians and archaeologists, they present a plethora of perspectives, methods, and approaches to the study of migration in the past. This introductory article describes the themes and scope of the articles. We argue for the importance of migration to peasant studies but also for the integration of peasant studies into mainstream migration history.

  • Structural anomaly in the reticular formation in narcolepsy type 1, suggesting lower levels of neuromelanin
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: NeuroImage: Clinical. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-1582. ; 23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate structural changes in the brain stem of adolescents with narcolepsy, a disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, fragmented night-time sleep, and cataplexy. For this purpose, we used quantitative magnetic resonance imaging to obtain R1 and R2 relaxation rates, proton density, and myelin maps in adolescents with narcolepsy (n = 14) and healthy controls (n = 14). We also acquired resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for brainstem connectivity analysis. We found a significantly lower R2 in the rostral reticular formation near the superior cerebellar peduncle in narcolepsy patients, family wise error corrected p = .010. Narcolepsy patients had a mean R2 value of 1.17 s−1 whereas healthy controls had a mean R2 of 1.31 s−1, which was a large effect size with Cohen d = 4.14. We did not observe any significant differences in R1 relaxation, proton density, or myelin content. The sensitivity of R2 to metal ions in tissue and the transition metal ion chelating property of neuromelanin indicate that the R2 deviant area is one of the neuromelanin containing nuclei of the brain stem. The close proximity and its demonstrated involvement in sleep-maintenance, specifically through orexin projections from the hypothalamus regulating sleep stability, as well as the results from the connectivity analysis, suggest that the observed deviant area could be the locus coeruleus or other neuromelanin containing nuclei in the proximity of the superior cerebellar peduncle. Hypothetically, the R2 differences described in this paper could be due to lower levels of neuromelanin in this area of narcolepsy patients. © 2019 The Authors

  • Dietary intake of flavonoids and ventilatory function in european adults: A GA2LEN study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - Basel : MDPI AG. - 2072-6643. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Flavonoids exert anti-inflammatory properties and modulate oxidative stress in vitro, suggesting a protective effect on lung function, but epidemiological studies examining this association are scarce. Methods: A stratified random sample was drawn from the GA2LEN screening survey, in which 55,000 adults aged 15 to 75 answered a questionnaire on respiratory symptoms. Post-bronchodilator spirometry was obtained from 2850 subjects. Forced vital capacity (FVC), the ratio between the forced exhaled volume in 1 second (FEV1) and FVC (FEV1/FVC), FVC below lower limit of normal (FVC < LLN), and FEV1/FVC < LLN were calculated. Intake of the six main subclasses of flavonoids was estimated using the GA2LEN Food Frequency Questionnaire. Adjusted associations between outcomes and each subclass of flavonoids were examined with multivariate regressions. Simes’ procedure was used to test for multiple comparisons. Results: A total of 2599 subjects had valid lung function and dietary data. A lower prevalence of FVC < LLN (airway restriction) was observed in those with higher total flavonoid (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), higher vs. lowest quintile intake 0.58, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.36, 0.94), and pro-anthocyanidin intakes (aOR 0.47, 95% CI 0.27, 0.81). A higher FEV1/FVC was associated with higher intakes of total flavonoids and pro-anthocyanidins (adjusted correlation coefficient (a β-coeff 0.33, 0.10, 0.57 and a β-coeff 0.44, 95% CI 0.19, 0.69, respectively). After Simes’ procedure, the statistical significance of each of these associations was attenuated but remained below 0.05, with the exception of total flavonoids and airway restriction. Conclusions: This population-based study in European adults provides cross-sectional evidence of a positive association of total flavonoid intake and pro-anthocyanidins and ventilatory function, and a negative association with spirometric restriction in European adults. © 2018 by the authors. • Cognitive Impairment and Metabolite Profile Alterations in the Hippocampus and Cortex of Male and Female Mice Exposed to a Fat and Sugar-Rich Diet are Normalized by Diet Reversal
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Aging and Disease. - 2152-5250. ; 13:1, s. 267-283
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diabetes impacts on brain metabolism, structure and function. Alterations in brain metabolism have been observed in obesity and diabetes models induced by exposure to diets rich in saturated fat and/or sugar and have been linked to memory impairment. However, it remains to be determined whether brain dysfunction induced by obesogenic diets results from permanent brain alterations. We tested the hypothesis that an obesogenic diet (high-fat and high-sucrose diet; HFHSD) causes reversible changes in hippocampus and cortex metabolism and alterations in behavior. Mice were exposed to HFHSD for 24 weeks or for 16 weeks followed by 8 weeks of diet normalization. Development of the metabolic syndrome, changes in behavior, and brain metabolite profiles by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) were assessed longitudinally. Control mice were fed an ingredient-matched low-fat and low-sugar diet. Mice fed the HFHSD developed obesity, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance, with a more severe phenotype in male than female mice. Relative to controls, both male and female HFHSD-fed mice showed increased anxiety-like behavior, impaired memory in object recognition tasks, but preserved working spatial memory as evaluated by spontaneous alternation in a Y-maze. Alterations in the metabolite profiles were observed both in the hippocampus and cortex but were more distinct in the hippocampus. HFHSD-induced metabolic changes included altered levels of lactate, glutamate, GABA, glutathione, taurine, N-acetylaspartate, total creatine and total choline. Notably, HFHSD-induced metabolic syndrome, anxiety, memory impairment, and brain metabolic alterations recovered upon diet normalization for 8 weeks. In conclusion, cortical and hippocampal derangements induced by long-term HFHSD consumption are reversible rather than being the result of permanent tissue damage.

  • Ingår i: Composites. Part A, Applied science and manufacturing. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1359-835X .- 1878-5840. ; 82, s. 244-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simple approach based on Classical Laminate Theory (CLT) and effective stiffness of damaged layer is suggested for bending stiffness determination of laminate with intralaminar cracks in surface 90-layers and delaminations initiated from intralaminar cracks. The effective stiffness of a layer with damage is back-calculated comparing the in-plane stiffness of a symmetric reference cross-ply laminate with and without damage. The in-plane stiffness of the damaged reference cross-ply laminate was calculated in two ways: (1) using FEM model of representative volume element (RVE) and (2) using the analytical GLOB-LOC model. The obtained effective stiffness of a layer at varying crack density and delamination length was used to calculate the A, B and D matrices in the unsymmetrically damaged laminate. The applicability of the effective stiffness in CLT to solve bending problems was validated analyzing bending of the damaged laminate in 4-point bending test which was also simulated with 3-D FEM.

    • Query languages for sensor data will have similarities with traditional query languages but will also have diverging properties that cause a higher complexity than the traditional ones. Both types require data independence. However, as different sensors create data of heterogeneous type the commonly used methods for data selection cannot be used. Furthermore, sensor data will always be associated with uncertainties and since also sensor data fusion must be possible to carry out this cause further problem in development of the query languages. Here a visual query language for sensor data input is discussed from these perspectives to allow a complete set of spatial temporal queries by means of its visual user interface.

    • Intricate and complex dependencies between multiple disciplines require iterative intensive optimization processes. To this end, multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) has been established as a convincing concurrent technique to manage inherited complexities. This paper presents a high level CAD and CAE design automation methodology which enables fast, efficient concept generation for MDO. To increase the evaluation speed, global metamodels are introduced to replace computationally expensive CAD and CAE models. In addition, various techniques are applied to drastically decrease the number ofsamplings required to create the metamodels. In the final part of the paper, a multi-level optimization strategy is proposed to find the optimal concept. As proof of concept, a real world design problem, from ABB industrial robotics, is presented.

  • Fast Charging Control of Lithium-Ion Batteries: Effects of Input, Model, and Parameter Uncertainties
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 European Control Conference, ECC 2022. ; , s. 1647-1653
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The foundation of advanced battery management is computationally efficient control-oriented models that can capture the key battery characteristics. The selection of an appropriate battery model is usually focused on model order, whereas the effects of input and parameter uncertainties are often overlooked. This work aims to pinpoint the minimum model complexity for health-conscious fast charging control of lithiumion batteries in relation to sensor biases and parameter errors. Starting from a high-fidelity physics-based model that describes both the normal intercalation reaction and the dominant side reactions, Padé approximation and the finite volume method are employed for model simplification, with the number of control volumes as a tuning parameter. For given requirements on modeling accuracy, extensive model-based simulations are conducted to find the simplest models, based on which the effects of current sensor biases and parameter errors are systematically studied. The results show that relatively loworder models can be well qualified for the control of voltage, state of charge, and temperature. On the other hand, high-order models are necessary for health management, particularly during fast charging, and the choice of the safety margin should also take the current sensor biases into consideration. Furthermore, when the parameters have a certain extent of uncertainties, increasing the model order will not provide improvement in model accuracy.

    • The study of dexterous manipulation has provided important insights into human sensorimotor control as well as inspiration for manipulation strategies in robotic hands. Previous work focused on experimental environment with restrictions. Here, we describe a method using the deformation and color distribution of the fingernail and its surrounding skin to estimate the fingertip forces, torques, and contact surface curvatures for various objects, including the shape and material of the contact surfaces and the weight of the objects. The proposed method circumvents limitations associated with sensorized objects, gloves, or fixed contact surface type. In addition, compared with previous single finger estimation in an experimental environment, we extend the approach to multiple finger force estimation, which can be used for applications such as human grasping analysis. Four algorithms are used, c.q., Gaussian process, convolutional neural networks, neural networks with fast dropout, and recurrent neural networks with fast dropout, to model a mapping from images to the corresponding labels. The results further show that the proposed method has high accuracy to predict force, torque, and contact surface.

  • Decision support systems in maintenance : fusion of business data and physical data
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Condition Monitor. - 0268-8050. ; :299, s. 7-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Maintenance optimization is critical for enhancing the effectiveness of asset management system. Maintenance effectiveness depends on the quality, timeliness, accuracy and completeness of information related to machinedegradation state, based on which decisions are made. With emergenceof intelligent sensors to measure and monitor the health state of the component and gradual implementation of information and communication technologies (lCT) in organizations conceptualization and implementation of e-maintenance is turning into a reality. While e-maintenance shows a lot of promise, seamless integration of ICT into the industrial environment remains a challenge. Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) are the core of traditional maintenance record-keeping practices and often facilitate the usage of textual descriptions of faults and actions performed on a vehicle. Recently developed Condition Monitoring Systems (CM) are capable of directly monitoring asset componentsparameters; however, attempts to link observed CMMS events to CM sensormeasurements have been fairly limited in their approach and scalability. In this article, we present our approach for addressing this predicament. We argue that understanding the requirements and constraints in conjunction- from maintenance and ICT perspectives - is necessary. We identifythe issues that need be addressed for achieving successful e-maintenanceproviding a new theoretical process for integrating the two disparatedata types.
