  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Det goda livet. - Göteborg : Daidalos. - 9171731601 - 9789171731609 ; , s. 151-170

  • Pre-diagnostic circulating resistin concentrations are not associated with colorectal cancer risk in the european prospective investigation into cancer and nutrition study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cancers. - : MDPI. - 2072-6694. ; 14:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resistin is a polypeptide implicated in inflammatory processes, and as such could be linked to colorectal carcinogenesis. In case-control studies, higher resistin levels have been found in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients compared to healthy individuals. However, evidence for the association between pre-diagnostic resistin and CRC risk is scarce. We investigated pre-diagnostic resistin concentrations and CRC risk within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition using a nested case-control study among 1293 incident CRC-diagnosed cases and 1293 incidence density-matched controls. Conditional logistic regression models controlled for matching factors (age, sex, study center, fasting status, and women-related factors in women) and potential confounders (education, dietary and lifestyle factors, body mass index (BMI), BMI-adjusted waist circumference residuals) were used to estimate relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CRC. Higher circulating resistin concentrations were not associated with CRC (RR per doubling resistin, 1.11; 95% CI 0.94–1.30; p = 0.22). There were also no associations with CRC subgroups defined by tumor subsite or sex. However, resistin was marginally associated with a higher CRC risk among participants followed-up maximally two years, but not among those followed-up after more than two years. We observed no substantial correlation between baseline circulating resistin concentrations and adiposity measures (BMI, waist circumference), adipokines (adiponectin, leptin), or metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers (C-reactive protein, C-peptide, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, reactive oxygen metabolites) among controls. In this large-scale prospective cohort, there was little evidence of an association between baseline circulating resistin concentrations and CRC risk in European men and women.

  • Case-control estimation of the impact of oncolytic adenovirus on the survival of patients with refractory solid tumors.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Molecular Therapy. - : Elsevier BV. - 1525-0024 .- 1525-0016. ; 23:2, s. 321-329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oncolytic immunotherapy with cytokine armed replication competent viruses is an emerging approach in cancer treatment. In a recent randomized trial an increase in response rate was seen but the effect on overall survival is not known with any virus. To facilitate randomized trials, we performed a case-control study assessing the survival of 270 patients treated in an Advanced Therapy Access Program (ATAP), in comparison to matched concurrent controls from the same hospital. The overall survival of all virus treated patients was not increased over controls. However, when analysis was restricted to GMCSF-sensitive tumor types treated with GMSCF-coding viruses, a significant improvement in median survival was present (From 170 to 208 days, P = 0.0012, N=148). An even larger difference was seen when analysis was restricted to good performance score patients (193 versus 292 days, P = 0.034, N=90). The survival of ovarian cancer patients was especially promising as median survival nearly quadrupled (P = 0.0003, N=37). These preliminary data lend support to initiation of randomized clinical trials with GMCSF-coding oncolytic adenoviruses.Molecular Therapy (2014); doi:10.1038/mt.2014.218.

  • Next-generation Molecular Systematics and Evolution: insights into Medicago
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Evolutionary relationships among species have in recent years been inferred using DNA sequences from specific genes and represented by tree diagrams (phylogenies). However, the signal contained in different genes can produce conflicting sets of relationships – i.e., gene tree incongruence. Incongruence among gene trees in Medicago L. (Leguminosae) has been observed in several studies but not yet resolved. This thesis aims to re-examine the existing gene phylogenies, generate new data and apply new methods of analysis in order to achieve a deeper understanding of the causes of incongruence among species of Medicago. A comparison and reanalysis of six previously published gene phylogenies for Medicago indicates that different biological processes, such as incomplete lineage sorting, paralogy and hybridisation, intervene simultaneously to produce highly incongruent phylogenetic patterns in this plant genus. In order to discern between these different processes, more genomic data is required, and therefore a new approach, using recently developed sequence-capture techniques, is adopted, resulting in the largest, most widely sampled and comparable set of gene phylogenies generated to date for this genus. Identifying causes of incongruence also requires the development a theoretical framework that would allow for the sorting of these data according to different patterns. A model that takes genomic location into account and uses coalescent simulation to compare gene tree topologies is presented. This model is formulated as a flow of tests that culminate in the sorting of data for the inference of species trees, referred to as principal trees when hybridisation is present. The data produced and the methods developed are used to investigate the phylogeny of two sub-clades within Medicago, the Medicago murex clade and section Spirocarpos subsection Intertextae. Additionally, coalescent-based species delimitation methods are used to clarify species relationships. A species phylogeny is produced for the Medicago murex clade, confirming the separation between M. murex and M. lesinsii, two species with different karyotype. The inferred species relationships suggest a double event of chromosome speciation in this clade. Two hybridisation events are shown in subsect. Intertextae, both affecting lineages of Medicago ciliaris. The principal trees that represent these events are recovered through species tree inference analysis from data sorted by coalescent-based tests. A case of cryptic allopolyploid speciation is discovered in Medicago prostrata, a species with known diploid and polyploid karyotypes. Finally, a chloroplast phylogeny of Medicago is presented. This thesis shows that hybridisation has played an important role in the evolutionary history of Medicago, both at diploid and polyploid levels. It provides new insights into the evolutionary history of Medicago and shows the importance of hybridisation in the evolution of plant species.

  • The EKTF rescaling scheme in HIRLAM
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Tellus. Series A, Dynamic meteorology and oceanography. - : Stockholm University Press. - 0280-6495 .- 1600-0870. ; 63:3, s. 685-401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ETKF rescaling scheme has been implemented into the HIRLAM forecasting system in order to estimate the uncertainty of the model state. The main purpose is to utilize this uncertainty information for modelling of flow-dependent background error covariances within the framework of a hybrid variational ensemble data assimilation scheme. The effects of rank-deficiency in the ETKF formulation is explained and the need for variance inflation as a way to compensate for these effects is justified. A filter spin-up algorithm is proposed as a refinement of the variance inflation. The proposed spin-up algorithm will also act to prevent ensemble collapse since the ensemble will receive ‘fresh blood’ in the form of additional perturbation components, generated on the basis of a static background error covariance matrix. The resulting ETKF-based ensemble perturbations are compared with ensemble perturbations based on targeted singular vectors and are shown to have more realistic spectral characteristics.

  • An extrapolative approach to integration over hypersurfaces in the level set framework
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Mathematics of Computation. - : American Mathematical Society (AMS). - 0025-5718 .- 1088-6842. ; 87:313, s. 2365-2392
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We provide a new approach for computing integrals over hypersurfaces in the level set framework. The method is based on the discretization (via simple Riemann sums) of the classical formulation used in the level set framework, with the choice of specific kernels supported on a tubular neighborhood around the interface to approximate the Dirac delta function. The novelty lies in the choice of kernels, specifically its number of vanishing moments, which enables accurate computations of integrals over a class of closed, continuous, piecewise smooth, curves or surfaces; e.g., curves in two dimensions that contain a finite number of corners. We prove that for smooth interfaces, if the kernel has enough vanishing moments (related to the dimension of the embedding space), the analytical integral formulation coincides exactly with the integral one wishes to calculate. For curves with corners and cusps, the formulation is not exact but we provide an analytical result relating the severity of the corner or cusp with the width of the tubular neighborhood. We show numerical examples demonstrating the capability of the approach, especially for integrating over piecewise smooth interfaces and for computing integrals where the integrand is only Lipschitz continuous or has an integrable singularity.

  • C-reactive protein concentration and risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and mortality : an individual participant meta-analysis
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - 0140-6736 .- 1474-547X. ; 375:9709, s. 132-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Associations of C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration with risk of major diseases can best be assessed by long-term prospective follow-up of large numbers of people. We assessed the associations of CRP concentration with risk of vascular and non-vascular outcomes under different circumstances. METHODS: We meta-analysed individual records of 160 309 people without a history of vascular disease (ie, 1.31 million person-years at risk, 27 769 fatal or non-fatal disease outcomes) from 54 long-term prospective studies. Within-study regression analyses were adjusted for within-person variation in risk factor levels. RESULTS: Log(e) CRP concentration was linearly associated with several conventional risk factors and inflammatory markers, and nearly log-linearly with the risk of ischaemic vascular disease and non-vascular mortality. Risk ratios (RRs) for coronary heart disease per 1-SD higher log(e) CRP concentration (three-fold higher) were 1.63 (95% CI 1.51-1.76) when initially adjusted for age and sex only, and 1.37 (1.27-1.48) when adjusted further for conventional risk factors; 1.44 (1.32-1.57) and 1.27 (1.15-1.40) for ischaemic stroke; 1.71 (1.53-1.91) and 1.55 (1.37-1.76) for vascular mortality; and 1.55 (1.41-1.69) and 1.54 (1.40-1.68) for non-vascular mortality. RRs were largely unchanged after exclusion of smokers or initial follow-up. After further adjustment for fibrinogen, the corresponding RRs were 1.23 (1.07-1.42) for coronary heart disease; 1.32 (1.18-1.49) for ischaemic stroke; 1.34 (1.18-1.52) for vascular mortality; and 1.34 (1.20-1.50) for non-vascular mortality. INTERPRETATION: CRP concentration has continuous associations with the risk of coronary heart disease, ischaemic stroke, vascular mortality, and death from several cancers and lung disease that are each of broadly similar size. The relevance of CRP to such a range of disorders is unclear. Associations with ischaemic vascular disease depend considerably on conventional risk factors and other markers of inflammation. • Commuter and non-commuter preferences for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle: A case study of Delhi and Kolkata, India
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Economics. - 0739-8859. ; 103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the commuter and non-commuter preferences for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles in two Indian metro cities namely Delhi and Kolkata based on a stated preference (SP) framework. The SP data collected from the car-owning population in each city were analyzed using Mixed Logit (ML) models to obtain the commuter and non-commuter respondents’ perceived benefit associated with PHEV operation-specific attributes in terms of willingness to pay (WTP). Thereafter, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to understand the impact of improvement in related attributes on consumer preferences towards PHEVs. The findings suggest an added focus by car manufacturers on fuel cost savings, battery recharging time, battery range, tailpipe emission, and battery warranty to attract commuters. This study also highlights that high purchase cost and lack of public charging stations are key barriers towards PHEV adoption. Based on study results, policy actions such as higher subsidy, increased public charging stations, and public educational and awareness campaigns by Government could play a major role towards wider diffusion of PHEVs in Indian context.

  • Software-Defined Networking for Internet of Things : a Survey
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Internet of Things Journal. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2327-4662. ; 4:6, s. 1994-2008
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Internet of things (IoT) facilitates billions of devices to be enabled with network connectivity to collect and exchange real-time information for providing intelligent services. Thus, IoT allows connected devices to be controlled and accessed remotely in the presence of adequate network infrastructure. Unfortunately, traditional network technologies such as enterprise networks and classic timeout-based transport protocols are not capable of handling such requirements of IoT in an efficient, scalable, seamless, and cost-effective manner. Besides, the advent of software-defined networking (SDN) introduces features that allow the network operators and users to control and access the network devices remotely, while leveraging the global view of the network. In this respect, we provide a comprehensive survey of different SDN-based technologies, which are useful to fulfill the requirements of IoT, from different networking aspects – edge, access, core, and data center networking. In these areas, the utility of SDN-based technologies is discussed, while presenting different challenges and requirements of the same in the context of IoT applications. We present a synthesized overview of the current state of IoT development. We also highlight some of the future research directions and open research issues based on the limitations of the existing SDN-based technologies.

  • Stochastic optimal power flow problem with stability constraints
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting (PES). - : IEEE. - 9781479913039 - 9781479913022
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary form only given. Stochastic optimal power flow can provide the system operator with adequate strategies for controlling the power flow to maintain secure operation under stochastic parameter variations. One limitation of stochastic optimal power flow has been that only limits on line flows have been used as stability constraints. In many systems voltage stability and small-signal stability also play an important role in constraining the operation. In this article we aim to extend the stochastic optimal power flow problem to include constraints for voltage stability as well as small-signal stability. This is done by approximating the voltage stability and small-signal stability constraint boundaries with second order approximations in parameter space. Then we refine methods from mathematical finance to be able to estimate the probability of violating the constraints. In the first part of the article, we derive second-order approximations of stability boundaries in parameter space. In the second part of the article, we look at how Cornish-Fisher expansion combined with a method of excluding sets that are counted twice, can be used to estimate the probability of violating the stability constraints. We then show in a numerical example how this leads to an efficient solution method for the stochastic optimal power flow problem.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Environmental Modelling and Software. - : Elsevier BV. - 1364-8152. ; 95, s. 365-380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We developed a process-oriented model called NutsFor that simulates nutrient cycling of major cations (Ca, Mg, K, Al, NH4, Na) and anions (NO3, SO4, Cl) and the stable isotope tracers for each of the respective elements at the scale of an ecosystem (isotopic fractionation are not simulated). We tested the ability of NutsFor to reproduce major element and stable isotope tracer (26Mg and 44Ca) cycling with the data from 35-yr old beech stand in France. NutsFor correctly reproduced the measured trends in soil solution chemistry for most major elements. The high similarity between modeled and measured distribution of 26Mg and 44Ca tracers in the ecosystem provided a unique and robust way to evaluate the hypotheses grounding the model and study the efficiency of Mg and Ca cycling at this very nutrient-poor site.

  • One-particle density matrix characterization of many-body localization
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Annalen der Physik. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 0003-3804 .- 1521-3889. ; 529:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study interacting fermions in one dimension subject to random, uncorrelated onsite disorder, a paradigmatic model of many-body localization (MBL). This model realizes an interaction-driven quantum phase transition between an ergodic and a many-body localized phase, with the transition occurring in the many-body eigenstates. We propose a single-particle framework to characterize these phases by the eigenstates (the natural orbitals) and the eigenvalues (the occupation spectrum) of the one-particle density matrix (OPDM) in individual many-body eigenstates. As a main result, we find that the natural orbitals are localized in the MBL phase, but delocalized in the ergodic phase. This qualitative change in these single-particle states is a many-body effect, since without interactions the single-particle energy eigenstates are all localized. The occupation spectrum in the ergodic phase is thermal in agreement with the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, while in the MBL phase the occupations preserve a discontinuity at an emergent Fermi edge. This suggests that the MBL eigenstates are weakly dressed Slater determinants, with the eigenstates of the underlying Anderson problem as reference states. We discuss the statistical properties of the natural orbitals and of the occupation spectrum in the two phases and as the transition is approached. Our results are consistent with the existing picture of emergent integrability and localized integrals of motion, or quasiparticles, in the MBL phase. We emphasize the close analogy of the MBL phase to a zero-temperature Fermi liquid: in the studied model, the MBL phase is adiabatically connected to the Anderson insulator and the occupation-spectrum discontinuity directly indicates the presence of quasiparticles localized in real space. Finally, we show that the same picture emerges for interacting fermions in the presence of an experimentally-relevant bichromatic lattice and thereby demonstrate that our findings are not limited to a specific model.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Coastal Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-3839. ; 56:11-12, s. 1084-1096
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A two-dimensional numerical model of nearshore waves, currents, and sediment transport was developed. The multi-directional random wave transformation model formulated by Mase [Mase, H., 2001. Multidirectional random wave transformation model based on energy balance equation. Coastal Engineering Jounnal 43(4), 317-337.] based on an energy balance equation was employed with an improved description of the energy dissipation due to breaking. In order to describe surface roller effects on the momentum transport, an energy balance equation for the roller was included following Dally and Brown [Dally, W.R., Brown, C.A., 1995. A modeling investigation of the breaking wave roller with application to cross-shore currents. journal of Geophysical Research 100(C12), 24873-24883.]. Nearshore currents and mean water elevation were modeled using the continuity equation together with the depth-averaged momentum equations. Sediment transport rates in the offshore and surf zone were computed using the sediment transport formulation proposed by Camenen and Larson [Camenen, B., Larson, M., 2005. A general formula for non-cohesive bed load sediment transport. Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science 63, 249-260.; Camenen, B., Larson, M.. 2007. A unified sediment transport formulation for coastal inlet application. Technical report ERDC/CHL CR-07-1, US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg, MS.: Camenen, B., Larson, M., 2008. A general formula for non-cohesive suspended sediment transport. journal of Coastal Research 24(3), 615-627.] together with the advection-diffusion equation, whereas the swash zone transport rate was obtained from the formulas derived by Larson and Wamsley [Larson, M., Wamsley, TY., 2007. A formula for longshore sediment transport in the swash. Proceedings Coastal Sediments '07, ASCE, New Orleans, pp. 1924-1937.]. Three high-quality data sets from the LSTF experimental facility at the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory in Vicksburg, USA, were used to evaluate the predictive capability of the model. Good agreement between computations and measurements was obtained with regard to the cross-shore variation in waves, currents, mean water elevation, and sediment transport in the nearshore and swash zone. The present model will form the basis for predicting morphological evolution in the nearshore due to waves and currents with special focus on coastal structures. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. We describe a new software package for topological computation, with design focus on needs of the research community. This tool, replacing previous jPlex and Plex, enables researchers to access state of the art algorithms for persistent homology, cohomology, hom complexes, filtered simplicial complexes, filtered cell complexes, witness complex constructions, and many more essential components of computational topology. We describe, herewithin, the design goals we have chosen, as well as the resulting software package, and some of its more novel capabilities.

    • We consider tunneling of quasiparticles through a rectangular quantum well, subject to periodic driving. The quasiparticles are the itinerant charges in two-dimensional and three-dimensional semimetals having a quadratic bandtouching (QBT) point in the Brillouin zone. To analyze the time-periodic Hamiltonian, we assume a non-adiabatic limit where the Floquet theorem is applicable. By deriving the Floquet scattering matrices, we chalk out the transmission and shot noise spectra of the QBT semimetals. The spectra show Fano resonances, which we identify with the (quasi)bound states of the systems.

  • Quantifying the effectiveness of agri-environment schemes for a grassland butterfly using individual-based models
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ecological Modelling. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-3800. ; 411
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The intensification of agricultural practices throughout the twentieth century has had large detrimental effects on biodiversity and these are likely to increase as the human population rises, with consequent pressure on land. To offset these negative impacts, agri-environment schemes have been widely implemented, offering financial incentives for land-owners to create or maintain favourable habitats that enhance or maintain biodiversity. While some evidence is available on the resulting species richness and abundance for groups such as natural predators, pollinating insects including butterflies and moths, this is costly to obtain and it is difficult to predict the effects of specific habitat designs. To alleviate this problem we here develop an individual-based model (IBM), modelling the detailed movement behaviour, foraging, and energy budget of a grassland butterfly Maniola jurtina Linn. in patches of varying dimensions and quality. The IBM is successfully validated against data on M. jurtina densities, movement behaviour, resource use, fecundity and lifespan in habitats of varying quality. We use the IBM to quantify the benefits for life-history outcomes of M. jurtina of increasing the quantity and the quality of field margins within agricultural landscapes. We find that increasing the quantity of field margin habitat from 1 to 3 ha per 100 ha, as recommended in agri-environment schemes, increases the average number of eggs laid across a two-week period by 60% and adds an extra day to the average lifespan. Similar effects are reported for variation in the quality of field margins. We discuss the implications of the result for modelling butterfly responses to management scenarios.

  • Understanding champion behaviour in a health-care information system development project – how multiple champions and champion behaviours build a coherent whole
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Information Systems. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0960-085X .- 1476-9344. ; 25:1, s. 47-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Champions are commonly suggested as a means of promoting the adoption of information systems. Since there are many different definitions of the concepts of champion and champion behaviour in the literature, practitioners and researchers may be confused about how to exactly use these concepts. A qualitative analysis of a single case study in a Swedish health-care organisation enabled us to explain how different champion behaviours relate to each other and how multiple champions interact. Combining our rich case observations with an analysis of champion literature reveals how champion behaviours form a coherent and meaningful whole in which networks of different types of champions at different levels in an organisation utilise their network of relations, their knowledge of the organisation and their insight into strategic decision-making politics to time and orchestrate the framing of innovations and the involvement of the right people. In conclusion, championing is a complex performance of contextually dependent collective social interaction, varying over time, rather than a heroic act of one individual promoting an idea. Future studies need to focus more on how the relations between different champions and their behaviours develop across innovations and over time, in order to develop a richer understanding of championing.

  • Cerebrospinal fluid neurofilament light chain levels in CLN2 disease patients treated with enzyme replacement therapy normalise after two years on treatment
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: F1000Research. - : F1000 Research Ltd. - 2046-1402. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Classic late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (CLN2 disease) is caused by a deficiency of tripeptidyl-peptidase-1. In 2017, the first CLN2 enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) cerliponase alfa (Brineura) was approved by the FDA and EMA. The CLN2 disease clinical rating scale (CLN2 CRS) was developed to monitor loss of motor function, language and vision as well as frequency of generalised tonic clonic seizures. Using CLN2 CRS in an open label clinical trial it was shown that Brineura slowed down the progression of CLN2 symptoms. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a protein highly expressed in myelinated axons. An increase of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood NfL is found in a variety of neuroinflammatory, neurodegenerative, traumatic, and cerebrovascular diseases. We analysed CSF NfL in CLN2 patients treated with Brineura to establish whether it can be used as a possible biomarker of response to therapy. Newly diagnosed patients had CSF samples collected and analysed at first treatment dose and up to 12 weeks post-treatment to look at acute changes. Patients on a compassionate use programme who were already receiving ERT for approximately 1yr had CSF samples collected and NfL analysed over the following 1.3 years (2.3 years post-initiation of ERT) to look at long-term changes. All newly diagnosed patients we investigated with classical late infantile phenotype had high NfL levels >2000 pg/ml at start of treatment. No significant change was observed in NfL up to 12 weeks post-treatment. After one year of ERT, two out of six patients still had high NfL levels, but all patients showed a continued decrease, and all had low NfL levels after two years on ERT. NfL levels appear to correspond and predict improved clinical status of patients on ERT and could be useful as a biomarker to monitor neurodegeneration and verify disease modification in CLN2 patients on ERT. © 2022 Iwan K et al.

  • Improved self-healing of mortars with partial cement replacement
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Making the European Union’s economy sustainable is the “European Green Deal” strategy announced by The European Commission. One of the major aims is becoming climate-neutral by 2050. Since global cement production accounts for approximately 8% of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, the development of concrete with waste by-products as alternative binders and efficient self-healing properties would be a significant milestone towards the circular economy. The self-healing efficiency of cementitious composites with alternative binders requires further improvement as there is still insufficient information on this topic. The latest results for cement mortars showed the promotion of crack closure, both internally and externally, when the healing medium is a mixture of phosphate-based retarding admixture and water. The current study verifies whether satisfactory healing may also be achieved for cementitious composites with 20%cw slag and fly ash replacement subjected to phosphate-based exposure. The efficiency of the proposed solution is compared with other types of environmental conditions such as deionized or lime water immersion. The self-healing process is quantitatively assessed after 4 weeks of healing based on the crack closure and flexural strength regain. All exposure conditions applied resulted in efficient external crack closure; however, the phosphate-based retarding admixture showed the most impressive internal filling of the crack (Figure 1). Based on the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis, the majority of the self-healing products were identified as calcium carbonate crystals. Calcium phosphate compound and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) were visible inside the crack in case of retarding admixture exposure contributing also to a limited flexural strength recovery.

  • Polyelectrolyte complexes of bottle brush copolymers : Solution and adsorption properties
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis work was to systematically investigate the physico-chemical properties of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) formed by bottle brush and linear polyelectrolytes in solution and at solid / liquid interfaces. Electrostatic self-assembly of oppositely charged macromolecules in aqueous solution is a versatile strategy to construction of functional nanostructures with easily controlled properties. Bottle brush architecture, introduced into the PEC, generates a number of distinctive properties of the complexes, related to a broad range of application, such as colloidal stability and protein repellency to name a few. To utilize these materials in a wide range of applications e.g. drug delivery, the understanding of the effects of polymer architecture and solution parameters on the properties of bottle brush PECs is of paramount importance. This thesis constitutes a systematic investigation of PECs formed by a series of cationic bottle-brush polyelectrolytes and a series of anionic linear polyelectrolytes in aqueous solution. The focus of the first part of the thesis was primarily on formation and characterization of PECs in solution, whereas the adsorption properties and adsorption kinetics of bottle-brush polyelectrolytes and their complexes was investigated in the second part of the thesis work. In particular, effects of the side-chain density of the bottlebrush polyelectrolyte, concentration, mixing ratio and molecular weigh of the linearpolyelectrolyte on formation, solution properties, stability and adsorption of PECs were addressed. The pronounced effect of the side-chain density of the bottle-brush polyelectrolyte on the properties of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric PECs was demonstrated. Formation of PECs by bottle-brush copolymers with high density of side-chains results in small, watersoluble, molecular complexes having nonspherical shape, independent of concentration. Whereas formation of PEC-aggregates was revealed by bottle-brush polyelectrolytes with low side chain density, the level of aggregation in these complexes is controlled by polyelectrolyte concentration. The structure of the PECs formed with low molecular weight polyanions is consistent with the picture that several small linear polyelectrolyte molecules associate with the large bottle-brush. In contrast, when complexation occurs between polyanions of high molecular weigh and the bottle-brush polymers considerably larger PECs are formed, consistent with several bottle-brush polymers associating with one high molecular weight polyanion.

  • Thermodynamics and Microphysics Relation During CAIPEEX-I
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Pure and Applied Geophysics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0033-4553 .- 1420-9136. ; 176:1, s. 371-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Influence of the environmental thermodynamics on the microphysics of deep cumulus clouds over different parts of India is studied using in situ airborne observations from the Cloud Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement EXperiment (CAIPEEX) during 2009. This study provides an understanding of the thermodynamics–microphysics relation over the Indian summer-monsoon region. Relatively stronger updraft and turbulence are noted in the pre-monsoon cloud base layers compared to that of the monsoon clouds. It is illustrated from the in situ observations as well as from a microphysical parcel model that the vertical variation of cloud droplet number concentration (CDNC) has a well-defined peak at a certain height above the cloud base. This elevated CDNC peak is found to be connected with the cloud parcel buoyancy and cumulative convective available potential energy (cCAPE). Higher parcel buoyancy above the cloud base of dry pre-monsoon clouds is associated with stronger in-cloud updraft velocity, higher supersaturation and higher droplet number concentration (in addition to aerosol effect). Higher adiabatic fraction and lower entrainment rate are observed in polluted clouds where boundary layer moisture is low, compared to clean clouds. Relative dispersion of droplet size distribution is found to vary concurrently with air mass characteristics and aerosol number concentration observed over different locations during the experiment. Aerosol–precipitation relationships are also investigated from the observation. Maximum reflectivity and rain rates showed a direct link with boundary layer water vapor content rather than with subcloud aerosol number concentration.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Construction and manufacturing workers undertake physically laborious activities which put them at risk of developing serious musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). In the EU, millions of workers are being affected by workplace-related MSDs, inflicting huge financial implications on the European economy. Besides that, increased health problems and financial losses, severe shortages of skilled labor also emerge. The work aims to create awareness and accelerate the adoption of exoskeletons among SMEs and construction workers to reduce MSDs. Large-scale manufacturers and automobile assemblers are more open to adopt exoskeletons, however, the use of exoskeletons in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is still not recognized. This paper presents an experimental study demonstrating the advantages of different exoskeletons while performing workers’ tasks. The study illustrates how the use of certain upper and lower body exoskeletons can reduce muscle effort. The muscle activity of the participants was measured using EMG sensors and was compared while performing designated tasks. It was found that up to 60% reduction in human effort can be achieved while performing the same tasks using exoskeletons. This can also help ill workers in rehabilitation and putting them back to work. The study concludes with pragmatic recommendations for future exoskeletons.

  • Migrant women's experiences of an individual language-assisted information and support visit to the labor ward before giving birth : A qualitative study from Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sexual & Reproductive HealthCare. - 1877-5756 .- 1877-5764. ; 38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Migrant women are less likely to receive an individualized maternal care where they feel safe, informed and supported but few measures have been undertaken to meet their needs. In Södertälje municipality in Sweden, community-based antenatal care midwives identify migrant women and offer them and their partners language-assisted information and support through an individual two-hour-visit to the labor ward. The aim of the present study was to explore migrant women's experiences of antenatal care including receiving language-assisted information and support during pregnancy through a two-hour INFOR-visit to the labor ward.METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 non-Swedish speaking migrant women, using an interpreter. Interview analysis was conducted using reflexive thematic analysis.RESULTS: The individualized support, including thorough information given with language support available, sufficient time for questions and discussion, and a caring approach - did appear to inform and reassure the women. Overall, they felt that they were seen and treated as individuals during both pregnancy and birth and that their specific needs were listened to and met by the health care providers. Having professional interpreters was seen as essential for receiving the right information, something achieved at the individual visit.CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study provide evidence that a two-hour-visit to the labor ward during pregnancy has potential to empower migrant women during pregnancy and birth and to improve their experiences of maternity care. The two-hour-visit is a relatively simple intervention with the potential of not only improving migrant women's experiences of pregnancy and birth, but also their medical outcomes.
