  • Incomplete inversion of the hippocampus : a common developmental anomaly
  • 2008
  • In: European Radiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0938-7994 .- 1432-1084. ; 18:1, s. 138-142
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Incomplete inversion of the hippocampus, an imperfect fetal development, has been described in patients with epilepsy or severe midline malformations. We studied this condition in a nonepileptic population without obvious developmental anomalies. We analyzed the coronal MR images of 50 women and 50 men who did not have epilepsy. Twenty of them were healthy volunteers and 80 were patients without obvious intracranial developmental anomalies, intracranial masses, hydrocephalus or any condition affecting the temporal lobes. If the entire hippocampus (the head could not be evaluated) were affected, the incomplete inversion was classified as total, otherwise as partial. Incomplete inversion of the hippocampus was found in 19/100 subjects (9 women, 10 men). It was unilateral, always on the left side, in 13 subjects (4 women, 9 men): 9 were of the total type, 4 were partial. It was bilateral in six subjects (five women, one man): four subjects had total types bilaterally, two had a combination of total and partial types. The collateral sulcus was vertically oriented in all subjects with a deviating hippocampal shape. We conclude that incomplete inversion of the hippocampus is not an unusual morphologic variety in a nonepileptic population without other obvious intracranial developmental anomalies.

  • Laparoscopic versus open distal pancreatectomy (LAPOP) : Study protocol for a single center, nonblinded, randomized controlled trial
  • 2019
  • In: Trials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1745-6215. ; 20:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Earlier nonrandomized studies have suggested that laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP) is advantageous compared with open distal pancreatectomy (ODP) regarding hospital stay, blood loss, and recovery. Only one randomized study has been conducted showing reduced time to functional recovery after LDP compared with ODP. Methods: LAPOP is a prospective randomized, nonblinded, parallel-group, single-center superiority trial. Sixty patients with lesions in the pancreatic body or tail that are found by a multidisciplinary tumor board to need surgical resection will be randomized to receive LDP or ODP. The primary outcome variable is postoperative hospital stay, and secondary outcomes include functional recovery (defined as no need for intravenous medications or fluids and as the ability of an ambulatory patient to perform activities of daily life), perioperative bleeding, complications, need for pain medication, and quality of life comparison. Discussion: The LAPOP trial will test the hypothesis that LDP reduces postoperative hospital stay compared with ODP.

  • Nitrite, a novel method to decrease ischemia/reperfusion injury in the rat liver
  • 2015
  • In: World Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Baishideng Publishing Group Co. Limited. - 1007-9327 .- 2219-2840. ; 21:6, s. 1775-1783
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • AIM: To investigate whether nitrite administered prior to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) reduces liver injury.METHODS: Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to 3 groups, including sham operated (n = 8), 45-min segmental ischemia of the left liver lobe (IR, n = 14) and ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) preceded by the administration of 480 nmol of nitrite (n = 14). Serum transaminases were measured after 4 h of reperfusion. Liver microdialysate (MD) was sampled in 30-min intervals and analyzed for glucose, lactate, pyruvate and glycerol as well as the total nitrite and nitrate (NOx). The NOx was measured in serum.RESULTS: Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) at the end of reperfusion was higher in the IR group than in the nitrite group (40 ± 6.8 μkat/L vs 22 ± 2.6 μkat/L, P = 0.022). Similarly, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was also higher in the I/R group than in the nitrite group (34 ± 6 μkat vs 14 ± 1.5 μkat, P = 0.0045). The NOx in MD was significantly higher in the nitrite group than in the I/R group (10.1 ± 2.9 μM vs 3.2 ± 0.9 μM, P = 0.031) after the administration of nitrite. During ischemia, the levels decreased in both groups and then increased again during reperfusion. At the end of reperfusion, there was a tendency towards a higher NOx in the I/R group than in the nitrite group (11.6 ± 0.7 μM vs 9.2 ± 1.1 μM, P = 0.067). Lactate in MD was significantly higher in the IR group than in the nitrite group (3.37 ± 0.18 mM vs 2.8 ± 0.12 mM, P = 0.01) during ischemia and the first 30 min of reperfusion. During the same period, glycerol was also higher in the IRI group than in the nitrite group (464 ± 38 μM vs 367 ± 31 μM, P = 0.049). With respect to histology, there were more signs of tissue damage in the I/R group than in the nitrite group, and 29% of the animals in the I/R group exhibited necrosis compared with none in the nitrite group. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) transcription increased between early ischemia (t = 15) and the end of reperfusion in both groups.CONCLUSION: Nitrite administered before liver ischemia in the rat liver reduces anaerobic metabolism and cell necrosis, which could be important in the clinical setting.

  • MiljötillståndetiNorrbottens läns referenssjöar
  • 2003
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • ”I don’t believe the meaning of life is all that profound” : A study of Icelandic teenagers’ life interpretation and values
  • 2008
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • What do teenagers recount about themselves and their interpretation of life and values, and what characterises individual teenagers’ perceptions and statements? What is the relation between teenagers’ life interpretation and values and social circumstances? What challenges to school religious education do the teenagers’ perceptions and statements represent? These questions are central to the study Icelandic Teenagers’ Life Interpretation and Values. The purpose of the study was to investigate some central elements in teenagers’ life interpretation so as to discuss the results in terms of social circumstances in Iceland and of school religious education. The background is that Icelandic society, having been relatively homogeneous, has changed during the past few years with increased plurality. The material the study was based on consists of interviews with Icelandic teenagers. In four articles included in the thesis different parts of the material collected are interpreted using a hermeneutic approach. The main result showed that the teenagers were in a field of tension between homogeneity and plurality on the one hand and security and insecurity on the other. The main trends in the material indicate a common reference framework at the same time as plurality emerges in the teenager’s verbal expressions; and while most spoke of their happiness and security, there was also awareness of the risk and threat that can transform the situation. The material exhibited greater variation within each school than between schools. This suggests the effect of plurality on the younger generation in Iceland. Given this variation among individuals it is urgent to find an approach to religious education that takes greater account of the different pupils’ backgrounds, personal experience and existential questions.

  • Is Land Grabbing Always What It Is Supposed to Be? Large-scale Land Investments in sub-Saharan Africa
  • 2015
  • In: Development Policy Review. - : Wiley: 24 months. - 0950-6764 .- 1467-7679. ; 33:4, s. 457-478
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The term land grabbing has recently attracted widespread, and sometimes agitated, attention, and its literature grows at exponential speed. At the same time, the concept remains little understood concerning both its meaning, magnitude and consequences and even who the grabbers are. Different attempts to define land grabbing appear to reflect ideological lenses and pre-defined positions rather than a genuine ambition to find out what is actually going on. Based on a comprehensive literature review, this article aims at presenting a more nuanced understanding of this disputed topic and therefore a less biased account of what land-grabbing and/or private investments in land represent.

  • Morphological changes in rat submandibular gland mucous cells during fixation with 10% formalin
  • 1996
  • In: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology. - 0937-4477 .- 1434-4726. ; 253:4-5, s. 214-21
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The features of mucous cells in 10% formalin (FA)-fixed submandibular glands differ markedly from those fixed in glutaraldehyde (GA). We therefore studied morphological changes in mucous cells during 10% FA fixation. Mucous cells were fixed in either 10% FA, neutral sodium-phosphate-buffered (Na-PBed) 10% FA, ice-cold 10% FA or an ice-cold fixative mixture of 2.0% paraformaldehyde (PA) and 0.5% GA. Two different methods were used: immersion fixation and venous perfusion fixation. The 10% FA-fixed tissues had elliptical or flattened nuclei, a clear cytoplasm and no secretory granules. Tissues fixed with the fixative mixture displayed almost round nuclei, a broad endoplasmic reticulum and abundant secretory granules in the cytoplasm. Tissues immersion-fixed with neutral Na-PBed 10% FA or perfusion-fixed with ice-cold 10% FA had almost the same light microscopic appearance as that of the mixture-fixed tissues. To elucidate the process of morphological changes during 10% FA fixation at room temperature, samples immersed in 10% FA for varying periods of time were postfixed immediately in the fixative mixture and exposed to microwave irradiation. This method produced a variety of findings, even within the same section. There was a significant difference in the findings seen in the center of the section and at the periphery. The initial changes caused by 10% FA were rupture of the secretory granules located in the perinuclear region and destruction of the perinuclear organelles such as Golgi apparatus, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. Absorption of the endoplasmic reticulum progressed so that the perinuclear region became translucent. To obtain a better structure in mucous cells from the fixed submandibular gland tissues, an appropriate fixative such as GA should be used and the fixative should infiltrate into the tissues as quickly as possible.

  • Cerebral palsy in children in Kampala, Uganda : clinical subtypes, motor function and co-morbidities
  • 2015
  • In: BMC Research Notes. - : BioMed Central. - 1756-0500. ; 8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common chronic childhood disorder worldwide. There is limited information about the CP panorama in sub-Saharan Africa. Our aim was to describe the clinical subtypes, gross and fine motor functions and presence of co-morbidities in a group of children with CP attending a tertiary hospital in Uganda.METHODS: Children with CP in the age range of 2-12 years visiting the paediatric CP clinic at Mulago Hospital, Kampala, were enrolled. Screening and inclusion were based on a three-stage procedure: i) Two screening questions from the Ten Question Screen; ii) Clinical assessments adapted from the Surveillance for Cerebral Palsy in Europe (SCPE); iii) Clinical examinations and diagnoses of subtype, severity level and co-morbidities. Caregivers were interviewed using questionnaires to provide information on child's medical history and co-morbidities. Co-morbidity scores were calculated for each child.RESULTS: One hundred and thirty five children with CP were enrolled (72 males, 63 females, median age 3 years 5 months, IQR-2 years 4 months-5 years 6 months). Bilateral spastic type was commonest (45%); moderate impairment in gross motor function was present in 43%, with comparable numbers (37%) in the mild and severely impaired fine motor function groups. The severe gross and fine motor function levels were seen in the bilateral spastic and dyskinetic CP subtypes. Signs of learning disability (75%) and epilepsy (45%) were the commonest co-morbidities. Higher co-morbidity scores were obtained in children with dyskinetic CP and severe levels of gross and fine motor function. There was a significant difference in distribution of the co-morbidity scores between the CP subtypes, gross motor and fine motor function levels (p <0.001). Signs of speech and language impairments were associated with bilateral spastic CP and severe gross and fine motor dysfunction (p < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral spastic CP was the main clinical subtype, with signs of learning disability and epilepsy as major causes of co-morbidity. The severity of gross and fine motor function levels was related to severity of clinical CP subtypes. Our findings imply a higher occurrence of birth asphyxia or post natally acquired infections. Improvement in emergency obstetric and postnatal care may reduce this burden.

  • Diabetes negatively affects cortical and striatal GABAergic neurons: an effect that is partially counteracted by exendin-4.
  • 2016
  • In: Bioscience reports. - 1573-4935. ; 36:6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients often develop early cognitive and sensorimotor impairments. The pathophysiological mechanisms behind these problems are largely unknown. Recent studies demonstrate that dysfunctional γ-aminobutyric acid (GABAergic) neurons are involved in age-related cognitive decline. We hypothesized that similar, but earlier dysfunction is taking place under T2D in the neocortex and striatum (two brain areas important for cognition and sensorimotor functions). We also hypothesized that the T2D-induced effects are pharmacologically reversible by anti-diabetic drugs targeting the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R). We determined the effect of T2D on cortical and striatal GABAergic neurons positive for glutamic acid decarboxylase-67 (GAD67), calbindin (CB), parvalbumin (PV) and calretinin (CR) by using immunohistochemistry and quantitative microscopy. Young and middle-aged T2D Goto-Kakizaki (GK) (a model of spontaneous T2D) and Wistar rats were used. Furthermore, we determined the therapeutic potential of the GLP1-R agonist exendin-4 (Ex-4) by treating middle-aged GK rats for 6weeks with 0.1μg/kg Ex-4 twice daily. We show that T2D reduced the density of GAD67-positive neurons in the striatum and of CB-positive neurons in both striatum and neocortex. T2D also increased the average volume of PV-positive interneurons in the striatum. Ex-4 treatment increased the density of CB-positive neurons in the striatum of GK rats. Our data demonstrate that T2D negatively affects GAD67 and CB-positive GABAergic neurons in the brain during aging, potentially identifying some of the pathophysiological mechanisms to explain the increased prevalence of neurological complications in T2D. We also show a specific, positive effect of Ex-4 on striatal CB-positive neurons, which could be exploited in therapeutic perspective.

  • Poultry manure fertilization of Egyptian aquaculture ponds brings more cons than pros
  • 2024
  • In: Aquaculture. - 0044-8486 .- 1873-5622. ; 590
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Aquaculture is a crucial sector for Egyptian food production, providing a cheap source of animal protein while securing income and employment for a substantial part Egypt's population. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is the most commonly produced fish, usually farmed in earthen ponds around the Northern Delta Lakes. A common practice among farms is to fertilize ponds with chicken manure (CM) in order to increase nutrient levels and promote phytoplankton, consumed by the fish. However, with reports of use of antibiotics in Egypt's poultry sector, and that CM contains residues of antibiotics, antibiotic resistant pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are production benefits large enough to compensate a potential health hazard?Using production data from 501 aquaculture farms and fish pond sediment from 28 ponds we evaluated potential benefits in yields and profitability for farms using CM for fertilization, and used qPCRs to screen sediments for three antibiotic resistance genes coding for resistance to the most commonly used antibiotics in the poultry sector. The analysis showed no significant benefits to fish yields or profitability in farms where CM was applied, but a risk of significantly increased nutrient loads. Meanwhile, we detected increased abundances of tetA and tetW resistance genes in fish pond sediment where CM was applied. With the risk of disseminating ARGs and causing eutrophication of local waterways, we recommend that Egyptian tilapia pond farmers refrain from using CM and adopt best management practices for increasing farm profitability in order to to reduce environmental and health hazards.

  • Critical factors for the return-to-work process among people with affective disorders : Voices from two vocational approaches
  • 2018
  • In: Work. - : IOS Press. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 60:2, s. 221-234
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Depression is among the major causes of disability with a negative impact on both daily life and work performance. Whilst depression is the primary cause of sick-leave and unemployment in today's workplace there is a lack of knowledge of the needs of individuals with depression regarding their return-to-work (RTW) process. Objective: To explore which factors are of critical importance for people suffering from depression and who also are unemployed in their RTW-process and to explore the impact of two vocational approaches on the service users' experiences. The study included participants in two vocational rehabilitation approaches; Individual Enabling and Support (IES) and Traditional Vocational Rehabilitation (TVR). Method: Qualitative methods were applied to explore critical factors in the RTW-process. Individuals with affective disorders including depression and bipolar disorder were included. Results Three themes emerged as critical factors; Experiencing hope and power, professionals' positive attitudes, beliefs and behaviours, and employing a holistic perspective and integrating health and vocational service. Conclusion This study has demonstrated critical factors for the return-to-work process as experienced by persons with depression. To experience hope and power, to meet professionals that believe "you can work", who use a person-centred and holistic service approach, are such factors necessary for gaining a real job. In particular, professionals in TVR need to embrace this understanding since their services were not experienced as including these elements.

  • 2019
  • In: Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation. - : IOS Press. - 1052-2263 .- 1878-6316. ; 51:3, s. 325-337
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are the main cause of sick leave in today's working age population. Employers are responsible for their employees' work environment and preventing work-related illnesses, but their knowledge regarding mental health problems is lacking. Employer beliefs and support strategies need further exploration. OBJECTIVE: To explore employers' beliefs, knowledge and strategies use in providing support to employees with mental health problems. METHODS: This grounded theory study comprised 24 interviews with employers in a variety of workplaces, and included women and men in large and small organizations in a Swedish context. RESULTS: Two categories related to the aims emerged: comprehending mental health problems is complex, and lacking established conditions to support work. The results show that employers seek to support employees with mental health problems but have low expectations and lack knowledge and strategies. Employers acknowledged experiences of inadequate support and collaboration from other actors in the return-to-work (RTW) process. CONCLUSIONS: To close the service gap and improve the RTW process, employers need to increase their mental health literacy. Other actors need to improve their understanding of employer situations and provide them with necessary support.

  • Blood pressure targeting by partial REBOA is possible in severe hemorrhagic shock in pigs and produces less circulatory, metabolic and inflammatory sequelae than total REBOA
  • 2018
  • In: Injury-International Journal of the Care of the Injured. - : Elsevier BV. - 0020-1383 .- 1879-0267. ; 49:12, s. 2132-2141
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is an effective adjunct in exsanguinating torso hemorrhage, but causes ischemic injury to distal organs. The aim was to investigate whether blood pressure targeting by partial REBOA (pREBOA) is possible in porcine severe hemorrhagic shock and to compare pREBOA and total REBOA (tREBOA) regarding hemodynamic, metabolic and inflammatory effects. Methods: Eighteen anesthetized pigs were exposed to induced controlled hemorrhage to a systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 50 mmHg and randomized into three groups of thoracic REBOA: 30 min of pREBOA (target SBP 80-100 mmHg), tREBOA, and control. They were then resuscitated by autologous transfusion and monitored for 3 h. Hemodynamics, blood gases, mesenteric blood flow, intraperitoneal metabolites, organ damage markers, histopathology from the small bowel, and inflammatory markers were analyzed. Results: Severe hemorrhagic shock was induced in all groups. In pREBOA the targeted blood pressure was reached. The mesenteric blood flow was sustained in pREBOA, while it was completely obstructed in tREBOA. Arterial pH was lower, and lactate and troponin levels were significantly higher in tREBOA than in pREBOA and controls during the reperfusion period. Intraperitoneal metabolites, the cytokine response and histological analyses from the small bowel were most affected in the tREBOA compared to the pREBOA and control groups. Conclusion: Partial REBOA allows blood pressure titration while maintaining perfusion to distal organs, and reduces the ischemic burden in a state of severe hemorrhagic shock. Partial REBOA may lower the risks of post-resuscitation metabolic and inflammatory impacts, and organ dysfunction. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • How well does JXTA fit Peer-to-Peer SIP?
  • 2008

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • More and more people use voice over IP instead of traditional telephone networks. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), a protocol for session management in general, becomes the standard protocol in use. However, SIP relies on central servers and thus maintaining the infrastructure is costly. This results in the trend to transfer peer-to-peer concepts to SIP to overcome administration efforts due to self-organisation of the participants. In this paper, we propose a novel JXTA-based peer-to-peer architecture for SIP signalling. JXTA is a generic and open peer-to-peer platform, which provides basic infrastructure services for building peer-to-peer applications. Our concept does not need central entities for maintaining the SIP traffic, while maintaining compatibility with standard SIP. Additionally, we seamlessly added service location capabilities into our infrastructure to support service discovery in dynamic environments. We evaluated our concept in comparison to standard SIP within three scenarios: local area network, point-to-point network and wide area network. The results show that our approach fits well in terms of response time but results in more traffic for maintaining the peer-to-peer overlay.

  • FMT : a Swedish neuromuscular method of treatment
  • 2008
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Title FMT – a Swedish neuromuscular method of treatment Abstract FMT, Functional oriented Music Therapy, is an approach to identify and treat functional disabilities. The method focuses on neurological functions which are expressed through motor activity. The essence is to initiate activities in order to promote and influence sensorimotor processes, which will benefit the client’s natural development. Description Within the theoretical base of FMT, there is a developmental psychology tradition, represented by Piaget, as one cornerstone. However, a neurological and neuropsychological way of looking at things is also involved: The plastic brain and nervous system, which through interaction with the environment forms itself and creates conditions for facing challenges. In Sweden FMT is used in rehabilitation, school and senior services, among others. The method has been shown especially applicable to neuropsychiatric conditions. This paper will show how FMT can be used among children with special needs. We will mention subjects concerning interaction between motor control, perception, emotion, cognition and show how we use FMT to influence these systems. We will also demonstrate observation, analysis, treatment and evaluation according to the method.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper describes the information technology (IT) organization modeling and assessment tool (ITOMAT) and how it can be used for IT governance decision making. The ITOMAT consists of an enterprise architecture metamodel that describes IT organizations. Further, ITOMAT contains a Bayesian network for making predictions on how changes to IT organization models will affect the IT governance performance as perceived by business stakeholders. Thorough case studies at 20 different companies have been conducted in order to calibrate the network. Finally, the paper describes a case study where ITOMAT was used to analyze the future impact of two IT organization change scenarios in a medium-sized engineering company.

    • It is important to ensure that the IT governance is not only designed to achieve internal efficiency in the IT organization, such as deploying good IT processes and making sure that the means and goals are docu-mented. The final goal of good IT governance is rather to provide the business with the support needed in order to conduct business in a good manner. This paper describes the IT Organization Modeling and As-sessment Tool (ITOMAT) and how it can be used for IT governance decision making. ITOMAT consists of an enterprise architecture metamodel that describes IT organizations. ITOMAT further contains a Bayesian network for making predictions on how changes to IT organization models will affect the IT governance performance as perceived by business stakeholders. In order to make such predictions accurately, the network learns from data on previous experience. Thorough case studies at 20 different companies have been conducted in order to calibrate the network. Finally, the paper describes a case study where ITOMAT was used to analyze the future impact of two IT organization change scenarios in a medium sized engineer-ing company.

  • 2006
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
Slutligen i Kapitel 4 presenteras studiens resultat.

  • Building Cyberinfrastructure from the Ground Up for the North Atlantic Biocultural Organization : Introducing the cyberNABO Project
  • 2015
  • In: 2015 Digital Heritage: Volume 2. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781509000487 ; , s. 457-460
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The cyberNABO Project is designed to solidify a developing multidisciplinary community through the development of cyberinfrastructure (CI) to study the long-term human ecodynamics of North Atlantic, a region that is especially vulnerable to ongoing climate and environmental change. It builds build upon prior sustained field and laboratory research, rich and diverse datasets, and a strong involvement by local communities and institutions. cyberNABO is currently hosting a series of workshops aimed at taking these collaborators and stakeholder communities to a new level of integration and to develop capacity for building CI and visualizations in subsequent funding cycles. Research on the long-term sustainability in the Arctic requires compiling data from over thousands of square miles, hundreds of years, and multiple disciplines, from climatology to archaeology to folklore. The complexity of datasets of this scale presents a unique challenge to create a CI system that results in interoperability and accessibility of data – a task that needs an explicit plan and extensive expertise from a variety of fields. Investing in a comprehensive CI system provides the opportunity to integrate collaborators and data from the natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities, thus providing the opportunity for a holistic approach to long-term human ecodynamics in the context of rapid social and environmental change and for the creation of digital tools for expanded northern community involvement in global change research. In order to address questions of this scale, however, this collaborative group needs to integrate multiple sources, types, and formats of data to address multidisciplinary questions and provide effective support for visualization and modeling efforts that can connect knowledge systems.

  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • An alternatively spliced domain of the NDC1 NAD(P)H dehydrogenase gene strongly influences the expression of the ACTIN2 reference gene in Arabidopsis thaliana.
  • 2012
  • In: Plant Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9452. ; 183, s. 190-196
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In plant respiratory chains, alternative pathways for NAD(P)H oxidation are mediated by type II NAD(P)H dehydrogenases belonging to the NDA, NDB, and NDC families. For the latter type, Arabidopsis thaliana contains a single gene, NDC1, whose functional role has not previously been analyzed in the plant. We found that A. thaliana NDC1 is alternatively spliced. Four base pairs at the 3' end of intron 5 are spliced out in NDC1-1, but retained in the NDC1-2 mRNA, which therefore contains a truncated reading frame. Both variants are conserved in dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous plants and their relative abundance varies between organs and in response to light. Three analyzed NDC1 T-DNA insertion lines all displayed an early bolting phenotype. A dramatic upregulation of ACTIN2 was characteristic of two lines containing T-DNA inserts upstream of intron 5, whereas a line with an insertion downstream of the NDC1-2 reading frame had an ACTIN2 expression level identical to the wildtype. Thus, the alternatively spliced 5' domain of NDC1 strongly influences the expression of the functionally unrelated ACTIN2, which is a common reference gene for quantitative RT-PCR. Also for other reference genes, strong expressional effects were observed when comparing various mutants and wildtypes in microarray databases.

  • Changing Epidemiology of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome : Results of a National Swedish Cohort Study
  • 2019
  • In: Journal of the American Heart Association. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2047-9980. ; 8:2
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background Norwood surgery provides a palliative surgical option for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and has been available in Sweden since 1993. The practice of prenatal ultrasound screening was gradually implemented in the same era, resulting in an increased prenatal detection rate. Our primary aims were to study changes in the incidence of live births, prenatal detection rate, and the termination of pregnancies over time. The secondary aims were to study the proportion of live-borns undergoing surgery and to identify factors that influenced whether surgery was or was not performed. Methods and Results Neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome with aortic atresia born 1990-2010 were identified through national databases, surgical files, and medical records. The fetal incidence was estimated from the period when prenatal screening was rudimentary. The study period was divided into the presurgical, early surgical, and late surgical periods. The incidence was calculated as the overall yearly incidence for each time period and sex separately. Factors influencing whether surgery was performed were analyzed using Cox-logistic regression. The incidence at live birth decreased from 15.4 to 8.4 per 100 000. The prenatal detection rate increased from 27% to 63%, and terminations increased from 19% to 56%. The odds of having surgery was higher in the late period and higher in the group with prenatal diagnosis. Conclusions We observed a decrease in incidence of live-borns with hypoplastic left heart syndrome aortic atresia. There was in increase in prenatal detection rate and an increase in termination of pregnancy. The proportion of live-borns who underwent surgery increased between time periods.

  • How does it feel? : An exploration of teaching perceptive sensoriality in hairdressing education
  • 2024
  • In: Nordic Journal of Vocational Education and Training. - : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 2242-458X. ; 14:2, s. 1-29
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study explores vocational didactics and embodied knowledge in hairdressingeducation by studying how perceptive sensoriality is used by teachers and students increating shared understandings of vocational knowledge. Among multiple actions, touch is distinguished as a central resource in learning the vocation, as it emerges ininteraction between teacher and student related to the ongoing teaching and itsassignment. The data is based on video-recordings displaying how touch is used inmanipulating objects and material, or in assessing qualities and defects. In suchinstances, touch becomes a diagnostic criterion (Goodwin, 1997) to investigate how thematerial worked with can be evaluated and handled. To bridge the gap betweenindividual and collective vocational knowledge, metaphors are of use. The results showtwo approaches to the teaching of perceptive sensoriality. In order to learn the vocationalsubject content the teaching need to provide for and practice the individual’s embodiedsense of touch as well as the vocation’s verbalised collective feel. This is the core of thedidactical challenge.
