- This thesis focuses on the lived multilingualism of a group of young Russian-German adults who as children migrated together with their families from post-Soviet states to the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1990s. Today these adults live in a ‘Plattenbau’ housing estate in a small town in one of the new federal states of Germany. The large pre-fabricated concrete-slab system-built housing estates that were built during the GDR-era are today generally considered as deprived areas due a combination of decreasing population and high unemployment.This thesis shows how young Russian-Germans create a multilingual community of practice and use various aspects of language and non-linguistic resources for identity construction. The data analysed in this thesis comes from ethnographic studies conducted during three phases of fieldwork between Spring 2011 and Spring 2012. The data was collected at a youth centre where the group of young Russian-German adults regularly met.Combining intensive participant observation, field notes, photos, and narrative interviews the thesis is a mixed-method investigation. Underpinning the analysis of the research data are theoretical models of the relationship between language, identity, and space. Methodologically this study combines linguistic ethnography, narrative analysis, and membership categorization analysis.The thesis argues that an ethnographical-narrative approach is a powerful tool that is able to highlight the role of language(s) and non-linguistic resources for identity construction in social spaces, illustrates how young Russian-Germans construct a web of multilingual identities by using social categories to position themselves and others, and shows how the lived multilingualism of young Russian-German adults influences all aspects of their social lives. For example, the thesis shows the maintenance of Russian as a heritage language within Russian-German families, yet and an avoidance of visible signs of the Russian-German heritage in public spaces.

- The present study investigates the translation of dialectal elements in literary texts from the German and Swedish linguistical and cultural areas. Translation theory generally advises against the translation of dialectal elements in standard language texts thereby implicitly questioning their creative and communicative function. The aim of the study is to investigate to what extent the dialectal elements in the source text are translated by corresponding dialectal elements in the target text thereby promoting a "cultural transfer" or whether a translation method based on translation theory is used. The linguistic material from the novels Die Räuberbande by the German author Leonhard Frank, Tjärdalen by the Swedish author Sara Lidman and Kapten Nemos bibliotek by the Swedish author Per Olov Enquist is microanalyzed. In doing so, the phonetical-phonological, morphological and syntactical dialectal features in the three source texts are treated methodically and are exemplarily and systematically presented together with their translation variants in the target language. The study focuses mainly on the translations of dialectal lexicology, which is investigated according to its contrastive function regarding the translations of standard language, thereby examining its adequacy. By including all the dialectal lexemes appearing in the works and their translations empirical dates have been compiled as a result of the translation methods. The study´s analyses demonstrate that dialectal elements are mainly translated into standard language, that a large part of dialectisms is paraphrased and that a small part is rendered by spoken language without regional limits. A tendency towards increasing use of dialectal elements through the times can be detected as well as a propensity to adapt the translation to the stylistical preferences in the receiving country. Thus, "cultural transfer" is not promoted.

- Unter dem Rahmenthema Emotionen fand am 15./16. April 2016 auf dem Campus Gotland der Universität Uppsala die 12. Arbeitstagung schwedischer Germanistinnen und Germanisten Text im Kontext statt. Der vorliegende Band versammelt ausgewählte Beiträge, die in ihrer Vielfalt ein aktuelles Bild der Forschungsansätze und -projekte der Germanistik in Schweden vermitteln. Das Spektrum der Beiträge reicht von der Digitalisierung von Stammbüchern aus fünf Jahrhunderten bis zur Analyse von Metonymien in den Medien, von Fragen des transkulturellen Erzählens bis zu neuen Formen der Literatur im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung. Eine Untersuchung des Zusammenhangs von metasprachlichem Wissen und Grammatikkenntnissen bei schwedischen Deutschschülern rundet die Publikation ab. Der Band belegt, dass der Begriff der Emotionen sich als geeigneter Ausgangspunkt für den Dialog von Literaturwissenschaft und Sprachwissenschaft erweist; als verbindende Elemente fungieren vor allem kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze.

- This study aims at examining in detail the linguistic characteristics of sentential idioms (‘idiomatische Sätze’, IS) in German, e.g. Das kannst du dir an den Hut stecken.; Du hast wohl Tomaten auf den Augen!; Da lachen ja die Hühner!. In theoretically and empirically investigating their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features and productive potential, it is shown that IS can only be described properly by looking at the interfaces between syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and by systematically investigating pattern formation. In this respect, the study goes far beyond traditional phraseological research. As a theoretical background, the study refers to research on phraseology, sentence types and sentence mood, linguistic evaluation, morphological productivity, and the frameworks of Construction Grammar and Relevance Theory. Empirical evidence comes from a large corpus of written German, a linguistic experiment on productivity, and introspective data. With respect to syntax, the study shows that IS are bound to one or a few different sentence types, varying according to the degree of restriction of their speech act potential. The complex semantics of IS is shown to consist not only of a literal and an idiomatic, but also of a third, mediating representational level. The idiomatic meaning of IS is described as evaluative meaning. Pragmatically, IS are dependent on special contextual environments to obtain a proper interpretation. A context model is developed which makes use of certain categories of evaluation. Moreover, a relevance-theoretic approach is sketched in order to explain which functional advantages IS might have compared to non-idiomatic utterances. With respect to productivity, ten different idiomatic patterns of construction are identified and described in detail. It is experimentally demonstrated that these patterns are productive to a greater or lesser degree dependent on their internal syntactic, lexical, semantic and pragmatic features.

- In this research project the question is raised whether it is possible to detect and analyse differences between incidental and intentional vocabulary acquisition within a traditional, systematic teaching setting of German as an L3. The ten par-ticipating Swedish students at the upper secondary level worked with two differ-ent German newspaper articles in two different ways. One set of lessons focused mainly on textual content (incidental learning) while the other involved both dis-cussions about the contents of the text and explicit vocabulary practice (inten-tional learning). The students were later tested on four separate occasions using a self-report-test involving 16 pre-tested words. The two main research questions are: How many of the encountered words will the students recall and what depth of knowledge does this recall represent? Results point to a very limited vocabu-lary acquisition through incidental learning compared to the acquisition through intentional learning which gave a higher score. The overall tendency is for ac-quired vocabulary knowledge to change over time and more so if intentionally acquired. This raises a further question: How much and what kind of work in-volving texts is needed in the classroom for long lasting vocabulary acquisition, incidental or intentional, to take place? Furthermore the results indicate that the self-report test used in the research project shows deficiencies regarding validity as well as reliability issues, which puts further focus on the test methods used in educationally applied vocabulary acquisition research.

- This thesis approaches the question of how nominal compounds as linguistic means contribute to the construction of cultural meaning within the framework of knowledge transfer in the medieval monastic school. The starting point for the study is the semiotic definition of culture, which sees culture as shared models for perceiving, relating and interpreting among members of a social group. Language is seen as the place where cultural meaning is constructed and manifests itself in significant patterns, i.e., patterns of language usage that have meaning due to the fact that they are patterns. The central objective of this study is to reveal such patterns in nominal compounds drawn from Old High German (or rather bilingual hybrid) adaptations of Latin school texts translated, or adapted by Notker III (Labeo). Focus is placed on newly formed compounds, as well as compounds that differ distinctively from their Latin models. Methodologically this study combines the morphosemantic analysis of nominal compounds with a hermeneutic approach interpreting compounds in their textual and cultural context. Three significant patterns were established: (1) explication of implied meaning, (2) summary of complex expressions, and (3) explanatory translation. The first pattern can be observed in cases where the power of compounds to give additional information was utilised, e.g., in order to ensure a certain interpretation of a metaphorical expression. The second pattern demonstrates the capacity of compounds to refer to more complex concepts, expressing underlying syntactic constructions in a more memorisable manner. Finally, recourse was taken to explanatory translation in order to make the concept easier to understand. The three patterns are not necessarily the only patterns used by Notker III (Labeo); rather they are to be seen as an exemplification of the potential of nominal compounds for meaning construction.

- This study examines the functions of phrases with the word missverstehen in any inflected form in German discussion groups. The corpus consists of about 600 different messages with a phrase containing the verb missverstehen from all kinds of discussion groups speaking the German language. The hypothesis is that those phrases do not always refer to a factual misunderstanding in the communication. There is no such thing as total understanding in communication, since people cannot fully know how other people are thinking. Instead understanding is a social construct. Misunderstanding occurs when a group member cannot interpret a message so that it correlates with what the sender has meant. This understanding contains both the discussed theme as well as the relation between the group members.Relevance occurs when interpretable information is communicated through contextualization cues. Some cues carry information about the discussed theme, others communicate face work. A misunderstanding is caused by missing contextualization cues, i. e. the message is irrelevant. The study shows how the communicators can construct a disagreement as a misunderstanding, which it in turn has an impact on face work. The phrase is then being used together with added contextualization cues in order to construct a common understanding. Thereby the communicators can influence the interaction.This is done in a sequence in the discussion group. Hence the script theory (Schank/Abelson 1977) aims to describe the phenomenon of how a phrase with the word missverstehen can be used for different purposes. One script is defined for each purpose. The difference between the scripts is being maintained by the contextualization cue that carries the information about how the relations between group members are interacted.

- Occasional music was frequently used in the 17th century and indispensable for court ceremonies. From acultural-analytical and linguistic perspective, the contribution considers occasional music for the purpose of homage as amulti-code type of text. For the analysis of the compositions, concepts, metaphors and topics are taken into account; this refers to semantic units beyond the semantics of words and sentences. However, the focus of the article is not only on the semantics of complex linguistic signs, but it is also intended to show by contextualization how meaning was created in ceremonies by functionalizing emotions for socio-political purposes.
