  • The Development and Evaluation of an Animated Video for Pre- and Postoperative Instructions for Patients with Osteoarthritis : A Design Science Research Approach
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Geriatrics. - 2308-3417. ; 9:19, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition in the hip or knee joints that develops during a long period of time and sometimes needs hip or knee joint replacement surgery when pain gets too intense for the patient. This paper describes how an animated video for pre- and postoperative instructions for patients with osteoarthritis was designed. The design science research (DSR) approach was followed by creating a web-based animated video. The web-based animated video is used to support surgical departments with education for patients suffering from OA. In the web-based animated video, information about OA surgical treatment and its pre- and post-arrangements was included. The relevance, the rigor, and the design cycles were focused on, with some iterations of and improvements in the animations. Even after implementation, there was a feedback-loop with comments from the surgeons and their patients. Moreover, as more departments will use the web-based animated video, they want to make their special mark on it, so that further changes will be made. This paper presents the design and successful implementation of an animated video for pre- and postoperative instructions for patients with osteoarthritis, tightly linked to the patient journey and the workflow of healthcare professionals. The animated video serves not only as a tool to improve care but also as a basis for further scientific research studies.

  • Communication and Collaboration Gaps among PhD Students and ICT as a Way Forward : Results from a Study in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of E-Learn. - : Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education. ; , s. 237-244
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The low completion rate and slow progress in PhD education have been highlighted in many studies. However, the interaction problems and communication gaps that PhD students encounter make this attempt even more challenging. The aim of this study is to investigate the peer interaction problems and ICT based solutions from PhD students’ perspectives. The data collection method was an online questionnaire and in-depth interviews were used to follow up. The target group for the survey was the PhD students in Computer Science at Stockholm University. The total number of respondents for the survey was 53 PhD students and eleven randomly selected PhD students for the interviews. The results reflected a lack of peer interaction as an important issue in the perspective of the students. Based on this, the study showed several ICT solutions that have the potential to reduce the interaction problems and thereby improve PhD students’ collaborative learning and research quality.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning. - : Athabasca University Press. - 1492-3831. ; 17:3, s. 360-383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many research studies have highlighted the low completion rate and slow progress in PhD education. Universities strive to improve throughput and quality in their PhD education programs. In this study, the perceived problems of PhD education are investigated from PhD students' points of view, and how an Information and Communication Technology Support System (ICTSS) may alleviate these problems. Data were collected through an online open questionnaire sent to the PhD students at the Department of (the institution's name has been removed during the double-blind review) with a 59% response rate. The results revealed a number of problems in the PhD education and highlighted how online technology can support PhD education and facilitate interaction and communication, affect the PhD students' satisfaction, and have positive impacts on PhD students' stress. A system was prototyped, in order to facilitate different types of online interaction through accessing a set of online and structured resources and specific communication channels. Although the number of informants was not large, the result of the study provided some rudimentary ideas that refer to interaction problems and how an online ICTSS may facilitate PhD education by providing distance and collaborative learning, and PhD students' self-managed communication.

  • Analysis of entry phase in intermittent machining
  • 2018
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Cutting forces and vibrations are essential parameters in the assessment of a cutting process. As the energy consumption in the machining process is directly affected by the magnitude of the cutting forces it is of vital importance to design cutting edges and select process conditions that will maintain high tool performance through reduced energy consumption. The vibrations are often the cause of poor results in terms of accuracy, low reliability due to sudden failures and bad environmental conditions caused by noise. The goal of this work is to find out how the cutting edge and cutting conditions affect the entry conditions of the machining operation. This is done utilizing experimental methods and appropriate theoretical approaches applied to the cutting forces and vibrations. The research was carried out through three main studies beginning with a force build-up analysis of the cutting edge entry into the workpiece in intermittent turning. This was followed by a second study, concentrated on modelling of the entry phase which has been explored through experiments and theory developed in the first study. The third part was focused on the influence of the radial depth of cut upon the entry of cutting edge into the workpiece in a face milling application. The methodology for the identification of unfavourable cutting conditions is also explained herein. Important insights into the force build-up process help addressing the correlation between the cutting geometries and the rise time of the cutting force. The influence of the nose radius for a given cutting tool and workpiece configuration during the initial entry is revealed. The critical angle i.e. the position of the face milling cutter that results in unfavourable entry conditions has been explained emphasizing the importance of the selection of cutting conditions. Finally, the theoretical methods utilized for the evaluation of the role of cutting edge geometry within entry phase dynamics has been explored. This has revealed the trends that are of interest for selection of cutting conditions and cutting edge design.

  • Dynamic effects on cutting forces with highly positive versus highly negative cutting edge geometries
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Interactive Design and Manufacturing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1955-2513 .- 1955-2505. ; 13:2, s. 557-565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the influence of the cutting edge geometry on the development of cutting forces during the milling process is of high importance in order to predict the mechanical loads on the cutting edge as well as the dynamic behavior on the milling tool. The work conducted in this study involves the force development over the entire engagement of a flute in milling, from peak force during the entry phase until the exit phase. The results show a significant difference in the behavior of the cutting process for a highly positive versus a highly negative cutting edge geometry. The negative edge geometry gives rise to larger force magnitudes and very similar developments of the tangential and radial cutting force. The positive cutting edge geometry produces considerably different developments of the tangential and radial cutting force. In case of positive cutting edge geometry, the radial cutting force increases while the uncut chip thickness decreases directly after the entry phase; reaching the peak value after a certain delay. The radial force fluctuation is significantly higher for the positive cutting edge geometry. The understanding of such behavior is important for modelling of the milling process, the design of the cutting edge and the interactive design of digital applications for the selection of the cutting parameters.

  • Edge Geometry Effects on Entry Phase by Forces and Vibrations
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Intermittent machining is in general strongly related to the large impacts in the entry phase and related vibrations. The influence of the impact forces and vibrations on the cutting process is dependent on workpiece material, structural properties of the tool-workpiece system, cutting edge geometries and cutting parameters. Cutting forces adopt generally a periodic behaviour that gives rise to forced vibrations. In addition, self-induced vibrations may arise because of lowrigidity and insufficient damping in the tool-workpiece system at specific cutting parameters. The ability of the cutting tool to carry the loads during the entry phase and minimize the vibrations is often the key parameter for an effective machining operation. This research work is based on the experiments, analytical studies and modelling. It was carried out through six main studies beginning with a force build-up analysis of the cutting edge entry into the workpiece in intermittent turning. This was followed by a second study, concentrated on modelling of the entry phase which has partly been explored through experiments and theory developed in the first study. The third part was focused on the influence of the radial depth of cut upon the entry of the cutting edge into the workpiece in a face milling application. The methodology for the identification of unfavourable radial depth of cut is also addressed herein. Next, effects of the cutting edge on the vibrations in an end milling application were investigated. This study was related to a contouring operation with the maximum chip thickness in the entry phase when machining steel, ISO P material. The results of this work provide some general recommendations when milling this type of workpiece material. After that, the focus was set on the dynamic cutting forces in milling. The force developments over a tooth engagement in milling showed to be strongly dependent on the cutting edge geometry. A significant difference between highly positive versus highly negative geometry was found. The implication of this phenomena on the stress state in the cutting edge and some practical issues were analysed. Finally, the role of the helix angle on the dynamic response of a workpiece was investigated. The modelling technique using force simulation and computation of the dynamic response by means of modal analysis was presented. Extensive experimental work was conducted to compare the modelling and experimentally obtained results. The modelling results showed a similar trend as the experimental results. The influence of helix angle on the cutting forces and the dynamic response was explained in detail. The research conducted in this work contributes to the deeper understanding of the influence of the cutting edge geometry and the cutting parameters on the force build up process during the entry phase. The presented studies investigate the force magnitudes, force rates and dynamic behaviour of the tools and workpieces when machining at the challenging entry conditions. The methodologies applied are focused on the physical quantities as forces and vibrations rather than the experimental studies that evaluate tool life. The methods and results of the research work are of great interest for the design of the cutting tools and optimization of the cutting processes.

  • Ingår i: CIRP - Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1755-5817 .- 1878-0016. ; 24, s. 66-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to minimize vibrations in milling by the selection of cutting edge geometry and appropriate cutting conditions is an important asset in the optimization of the cutting process. This paper presents a measurement method and a signal processing technique to characterize and quantify the magnitude of the vibrations in an end milling application. Developed methods are then used to investigate the effects of various cutting edge geometries on vibrations in end milling. The experiments are carried out with five cutting edge geometries that are frequently used in machining industry for a wide range of milling applications. The results show that a modest protection chamfer combined with a relatively high rake angle has, for the most of cutting conditions, a reducing effect on vibration magnitudes. Furthermore, dynamics of a highly positive versus a highly negative cutting geometry is explored in time domain and its dependency on cutting conditions is presented. The results give concrete indications about the most optimal cutting edge geometry and cutting conditions in terms of dynamic behavior of the tool.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271 .- 2212-8271. ; 46, s. 364-367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the intermittent turning and milling processes, during the entry phase the cutting edges are subjected to high impact loads that can give rise to dynamical and strength issues which in general cause tool life reduction. In this study the effect of geometrical features of the cutting tool on the force generation during the entry phase is investigated. Cutting forces are measured by a stiff dynamometer at a high sampling frequency. In addition, the chip load area is analyzed and related to the measured cutting force. The results show that micro-geometrical features, in particular the protection chamfer, significantly affect the force generation during the entry phase.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The 7th International Swedish Production Symposium, SPS16, Conference Proceedings. - Lund : Swedish Production Academy. ; , s. 1-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The choice of milling cutter geometry and appropriate cutting data for certain milling application is of vital importance for successful machining results. Unfavourable selection of cutting conditions might give rise to high load impacts that cause severe cutting edge damage. The radial depth of cut in combination with milling cutter geometry might under some circumstances give unfavourable entry conditions in terms of cutting forces and vibration amplitudes. This phenomenon originates from the geometrical features that affect the rise time of the cutting edge engagement into work piece at different radial depths of cut. As the radial depth of cut is often an important parameter, particularly when machining difficult to cut materials, it is important to explore the driving mechanism behind vibrations generation. In this study, acceleration of the work piece is measured for different radial depths of cut and cutting edge geometries. The influence of the radial depth of cut on the dynamical behaviour is evaluated in time and frequency domains. The results for different radial depths of cut and cutting geometries are quantified using root mean square value of acceleration. The outcome of this research study can be used both for the better cutting data recommendations and improved tool design.

    • A series of cognitive mapping exercises were produced in order to create an overview of global international risks and to have an at least intuitive help in setting priorities. The initial chaotic impression persisted all through this process and that was a result in itself. Combinations of risk factor appeared as the really notable risks and a few of those wereextracted. Recalling that risk developments not all follow linear or smooth trends, but jump, gave an additional alarm to the impression of an earth in a so far underestimated crisis.Time factors remain to be analyzed but it is already clear that there is more of an urgency thanthe well-known laws of entropy indicates. The current piecewise studies of risks and trends donot face that responsibility though, neither for the people nor for the administrations. Anethical perspective is also offered in this article: Will our serious alert do more good than harm? Who will benefit from the knowledge exposed of the weaknesses of our world?

  • Do the land-poor gain from agricultural investments? Empirical evidence from Zambia using panel data
  • 2015
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the context of the global land rush, some portray large-scale land acquisitions as a potent threat to the livelihoods of already marginalized rural farming households in Africa. In order to avoid the potential pitfall of studying a particular project that may well have atypical effects, this paper systematically investigates the impact on commercial farm wage incomes for rural smallholder households of all pledged investments in the agricultural sector in Zambia between 1994 and 2007. The results suggest that agricultural investments are associated with a robust moderate positive effect, but only for households with a relative shortage of land.

    • OBJECTIVES: Unnatural deaths among Indigenous populations, including the Swedish Sami, occur more often than among the general population. To find prevention strategies, we explored the circumstances of the unnatural deaths of members of reindeer-herding Sami families.STUDY DESIGN: The number of deaths from among a cohort of 7,482 members of reindeer-herding Sami families were retrieved from the National Board of Health and Welfare for the years 1961- 2001.METHODS: An evaluation of the information from autopsy records at the National Board of Forensic Medicine, police reports, and available medical records identified 158 unnatural deaths. These were then analysed in detail.RESULTS: Transport-related deaths and suicides were the most common unnatural deaths among Swedish reindeer-herding Sami family members. Suicides contributed to 23% of all deaths, road traffic accidents to 16%, and snowmobile fatalities to 11%. The accidents generally reflected an "outdoor lifestyle" and the working conditions were characterized by the use of off-road vehicles such as snowmobiles. Half of the number of victims tested positive for alcohol and alcohol abuse was documented in 15% of all victims.CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that alcohol is an important factor in preventing unnatural deaths among reindeer-herding Sami, together with increased safety of both on-road and off-road transportation.

  • Health-promoting factors among students in higher education within health care and social work : a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data in a multicentre longitudinal study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - London : BioMed Central. - 1471-2458. ; 22:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Educational environments are considered important in strengthening students’ health status and knowledge, which are associated with good educational outcomes. It has been suggested to establish healthy universities based on a salutogenic approach – namely, health promotion. The aim of this study was to describe health-promoting resources and factors among first-semester students in higher education in healthcare and social work. Methods: This cross-sectional study is based on a survey distributed among all students in seven healthcare and social work programmes at six universities in southern Sweden. The survey was carried out in 2018 using a self-reported, web-based questionnaire focussing on general health and well-being, lifestyle factors together with three validated instruments measuring health-promoting factors and processes: the Sense of Coherence (SOC) scale, Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale (SHIS) and Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ).Results: Of 2283 students, 851 (37.3%) completed the survey, of whom 742 (87.1%) were women; 722 (84.8%) were enrolled on healthcare programmes, and 129 (15.2%) were enrolled on social work programmes. Most reported good general health and well-being (88.1% and 83.7%, respectively). The total mean scores for the SOC scale, SHIS and OBQ were, respectively, 59.09 (SD = 11.78), 44.04 (SD = 9.38) and 26.40 (SD = 7.07). Well-being and several healthy lifestyles were related to better general health and higher SOC, SHIS and OBQ scores. Multiple linear and logistic regressions showed that perceived well-being and no sleeping problems significantly predicted higher general health and higher SOC, SHIS and OBQ scores. Being less sedentary and non-smoking habits were significant predictors of higher SOC.Conclusions: Swedish students in higher education within the healthcare and social work sector report good general health and well-being in the first semester, as well as health-promoting resources (i.e. SOC, SHIS and OBQ), and in some aspects, a healthy lifestyle. High-intensity exercise, no sleeping problems and non-smoking seem to be of importance to both general health and health-promotive resources. This study contributes to knowledge about the health promotive characteristics of students in the healthcare and social work fields, which is of importance for planning universities with a salutogenic approach.

  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 9, s. 23376-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study focuses on the everyday life of young persons with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are follow-up studies describing ADHD, and ASD in adults, and residual impairments that affect life. Few qualitative studies have been conducted on the subject of their experiences of everyday life, and even fewer are from young persons' perspectives. This study's aim was to describe how young persons with ADHD and ASD function and how they manage their everyday life based on analyses of Internet-based chat logs. Twelve young persons (7 males and 5 females aged 15-26) diagnosed with ADHD and ASD were included consecutively and offered 8 weeks of Internet-based Support and Coaching (IBSC). Data were collected from 12 chat logs (445 pages of text) produced interactively by the participants and the coaches. Qualitative content analysis was applied. The text was coded and sorted into subthemes and further interpreted into themes. The findings revealed two themes: "fighting against an everyday life lived in vulnerability" with the following subthemes: "difficult things," "stress and rest," and "when feelings and thoughts are a concern"; and the theme "struggling to find a life of one's own" with the following subthemes: "decide and carry out," "making life choices," and "taking care of oneself." Dealing with the problematic situations that everyday encompasses requires personal strength and a desire to find adequate solutions, as well as to discover a role in society. This study, into the provision of support and coaching over the Internet, led to more in-depth knowledge about these young persons' everyday lives and revealed their ability to use IBSC to express the complexity of everyday life for young persons with ADHD and ASD. The implications of the findings are that using online coaching makes available new opportunities for healthcare professionals to acknowledge these young persons' problems.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Well-being in the society and improvement of people's life standards are linked to sustainable development in society. Stimulation of the individual's learning, competencies and career development contributes to community development and hence promotion of the sustainable development of our society in the future. Therefore it is of great importance to discuss different learning concepts and developing theories of learning and work integrated learning (WIL).University West vision is a work integrated learning, as approach and method. Discussion and debate about what WIL is and how it should be applied in education and courses is going on constantly on the university and has largely been made since the university was founded. On the syllabuses of different courses on basic and advanced level, stats that the work integrated learning elements should be mentioned. On the guidelines presents examples of what WIL-element can be, leaves to those who plans the courses to identify what such a moment can be. My view is that; as definition and identification of such moments are, left to every employee, there is an uncertainty in what WIL-element actually is. Different disciplines can define the concept differently and thereby the uncertainty is high about what really WIL-elements can be. That is why, I believe it is of great importance to discuss what WIL is?.Purpose of the study is to identify what the colleges at university west, consider to be WIL-elements and how it is applied in practice in courses. The study's purpose is also to contribute to the theoretical development of WIL and theories of learning.Part one is introduction. Part two deals with description of WIL, theoretical foundations for the study. Work-integrated learning has been defined differently and in different ways. But what is common is the combination of theory and practice or academia and work/workplace.In part three discusses approach and survey's design and empirical presentation. In part four presents some facts from reality, ie, empirical facts. Part five is about discussion and conclusions. When discussing WIL, often is focus and emphases is primarily on the workplace and experiential learning. While on University West, is focus on theoretical learning in the first place, not on the workplace. The focus is on the learning that happens at the university and how it should be linked to practice and workplace. This means that the starting point is from the opposite side. Another aspect is that, the perception of WIL, is vague and not precise.

    • The purpose of this paper is description and understanding of the individual career development (as entrepreneur or employee) as a dynamical process. I have studied the interaction and cooperation between different formal (politics) and informal (culture) institutions and their impacts on the individual's carrier development process (as entrepreneur as well as employee) during three different stages, i.e. socialization processes, opportunity identification processes, and finally career formation and development processes. Research methodology is qualitative i.e. case study, and consists of several cases. Study is based on twenty interviews at the two municipalities (10 from each one – four unemployed, three employed and three businessmen/entrepreneurs) and observation of municipalities at the west Sweden so called "Västra götalands Regionen". Individual's career development from two municipalities are compared with each other. Different categories (employed, unemployed and businessmen)are compared and differences in influences of institutions on different categories in two municipalities are identified and described. Study shows that both formal and informal institutions affect individual's career development process during three stages, i.e. socialization processes, career identification/creation processes, and finally career formation's development process. In other words, survey shows that, Politics and culture affects individual's career development and thereby regional development. Theoretical contributions are: results of this study can contribute to different understanding of entrepreneurship, employment and unemployment. It widens theoretical views of the subject, by understanding the role institutions can play at the individual's career development processes. 230 Practical contributions are: results can be used in individual career development by job centers and for planning and avoiding or facing future unemployment. It can also be used in companies and other workplaces planning and construction or formation of employee´s career development.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. - : Elsevier BV. - 0017-9310 .- 1879-2189. ; 138, s. 677-689
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Turbulent gas-liquid multiphase flows with and without phase change in a vertical wavy channel are addressed. The multiphase flow field is resolved using the volume of fluid method (VOF), and the flow equations are discretized and numerically solved by the well-known finite volume method. As a multiphase system without mass transfer, air/water flow is considered. It is shown that numerical simulation is well capable of predicting the various multiphase flow regimes ranging from slug to bubbly flows inside wavy channels. Moreover, accurate predictions of overall pressure drop are provided by numerical solutions for various air and water flow rates and the phase shift angle between wavy channel walls. Additionally, condensing flows of refrigerant R134a are simulated inside wavy channels. It is found that for almost all the cases considered in the present study, the convective heat transfer coefficient is higher in wavy channels in respect to straight channels. However, a significant pressure drop penalty is observed especially for high mass fluxes across wavy channels. Therefore, the use of the wavy channels for the enhancement of condensing heat transfer is only advisable for low mass fluxes with the phase shift angle of 180°. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

    • Examining the meaning of work in relation to identity, this chapter looks at literary renditions of jobs in academia, especially in the campus novel. Departing from John Williams’ Stoner (1965), the analysis situates the academic novel in a historical and cultural context where the idea that scholarly labour increases self-worth and dignity is under increasing pressure. Further, the theme of work-life dignity is expanded to a wider discussion of the borders and frontiers of the university, particularly of the humanities, in terms of value, usefulness, and productivity. To fully draw out the implications of the analysis, Stoner is read in relation to a range of academic novels that each conspicuously negotiates work, identity, and dignity, including Willa Cather’s The Professor’s House and J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace.

    • Some of the most prominent authors of the Zagreb School of Animation were (or still are) equally active in the field of animations as in the field of caricature and comics. The co-dependency of interrelation of these two fields in terms of aesthetics, mindset and semiotics is being examined on the example of Nedeljko Dragic andKresimir Zimonic. The history of comic strips and caricature is brought into relation with animated film and with the emergence of modernist animation in particular. Moreover, a special emphasis is placed on the influence of the incursion of specific aesthetic movements, known as comic book schools, on the Croatian comic scene.

    • Many important periods of the history of animation arose directly from and are part of the radical modernist wave with the epicentre in the USA that bombarded the world of animation after World War II and the influence of which is still felt today. Explaining the origin of American modernist animation in propaganda and commercial film, as well as in eminent artistic aspirations for artistic freedom, Ajanovic describes the main characteristic and the importance of production of the UPA animation studio, i. e. John Hubley, Stephen Bosustow and other leading figures of animation, placing their work within the production frames of the epoch and stressing their importance. By doing so, he argues in favour of the term modernist animation – a term that is much more precise and useful when analysing the mentioned phenomena – instead of the term reduced or stylized animation.

    • It seems that the first decades of the new millennium have brought about a small renaissance of documentaries, especially those that combine live action and animated pictures and even those visualiezd totally by employment of various animation techniques. My concern in the following chapter is the conspicuous propensity in Swedish animation towards animated documentary. In my view Sweden is the country that, besides Canada and Great Britain, has developed the most prolific production of films that merge documentary purposes and animated imagery. In this chapter I define animated documentary, as I understand it. I will also take a look into the history of Swedish animation and documentary, with an emphasis on the features that might be the base for the development of the animated documentary. The text will also focus on some factors in the production and social background that, at least partly, explain why the animated documentary is such a prominent feature on the Swedish animation scene and, lastly, it will point at some films and filmmakers that eminently represent the genre.

  • Filmdockan : Dockfilmen : genre historia estetik
  • 2021

  • Filmska Lutka. Estetika, žanrovske konvencije i hibridiziranje u modelskoj animaciji

  • Ingår i: Asifa Academic Magazine. - Ottawa : Association Internationale du Film d'Animation. ; 1:1, s. 9-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • My ambition here is not to give a firm answer to the eternal question why man laughs. Just like love, humor remains an unsolvable mystery. We do not know why we love someone, just as we do not know what the source of humor is. Man does not know why he loves someone. Man does not know why he laughs at something or someone. And that is a good thing. Life without secrets would be infinitely boring.Still, if not humor itself, we can identify what humor carries. Humor, just like art (and art and humor are often united), presents a vision of the world, one view of life. This paper is an attempt to analyze humor in Middle European animation illustrated by the example of two characteristic films created within the Zagreb school of animation.Already over the first decades of the twentieth century, film animation appeared in almost all middle European countries. Still, the golden age of this medium in this region lasted from the 1950s to the end of 1970s. After World War II, a significant number of animated film studios were founded in the region producing innovative and fresh art of animation often recognized at international film festivals. There was no middle European equivalent of Popeye or Superman. Much like in regional literature and visual humor, in animation too there were heroes who were not heroes. Leading characters in middle European animation were often characterized by the “Schweikian” anomaly: little man, who felt like a looser, bearing no illusions towards the presence or the future.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Hrvatski filmski ljetopis/Croatian Film Chronicle. - Zagreb. - 1330-7665. ; :82-83, s. 05-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The paper gives an overview of the work, career and poetics of Luis Bunuel, the most important surrealist in the world (active in the cinema of several countries – France, Mexico and Spain). The paper explains the roots of Bunuel’s poetics that derive from the filmmaker’s life experience and different art forms (Goya, Cervantes), his cinema role models (Lang, Eisenstein), his status among other filmmakers, social environment, provocation methods, stylistic techniques, his favorite themes and worldviews (for example, sexuality and constant criticism of Christianity in his films), the context of surrealist art and relationship with film industry. Although very often demonstrating a lack of interest for the rules of the dominant cinema, the traditional film making, even opposing in a planned and explicit manner, Bunuel proved, states the author of the paper, that he could participate (both as director and producer) even in the classical feature film cinematic framework. Considering the wide variety of surrealist (and avant-garde) cinema in general and the complexity of the work by Luis Bunuel, the paper tackles Dada elements and different types of surrealism. Finally, the paper examines the traces of surrealism in cinema and animated film in the post-Bunuel period (and undoubtedly under his influence).
