  • Physics and applications of three-ion ICRF scenarios for fusion research
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 1070-664X .- 1089-7674. ; 28:2
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper summarizes the physical principles behind the novel three-ion scenarios using radio frequency waves in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). We discuss how to transform mode conversion electron heating into a new flexible ICRF technique for ion cyclotron heating and fast-ion generation in multi-ion species plasmas. The theoretical section provides practical recipes for selecting the plasma composition to realize three-ion ICRF scenarios, including two equivalent possibilities for the choice of resonant absorbers that have been identified. The theoretical findings have been convincingly confirmed by the proof-of-principle experiments in mixed H–D plasmas on the Alcator C-Mod and JET tokamaks, using thermal 3He and fast D ions from neutral beam injection as resonant absorbers. Since 2018, significant progress has been made on the ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks in H–4He and H–D plasmas, guided by the ITER needs. Furthermore, the scenario was also successfully applied in JET D–3He plasmas as a technique to generate fusion-born alpha particles and study effects of fast ions on plasma confinement under ITER-relevant plasma heating conditions. Tuned for the central deposition of ICRF power in a small region in the plasma core of large devices such as JET, three-ion ICRF scenarios are efficient in generating large populations of passing fast ions and modifying the q-profile. Recent experimental and modeling developments have expanded the use of three-ion scenarios from dedicated ICRF studies to a flexible tool with a broad range of different applications in fusion research.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the JET DTE2 campaign a new method was successfully tested to detect the heating of bulk electrons by alpha-particles, using the dynamic response of the electron temperature T e to the modulation of ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH). A fundamental deuterium (D) ICRH scheme was applied to a tritium-rich hybrid plasma with D-neutral beam injection (NBI). The modulation of the ion temperature T i and of the ICRH accelerated deuterons leads to modulated alpha-heating with a large delay with respect to other modulated electron heating terms. A significant phase delay of similar to 40 degrees is measured between central T e and T i, which can only be explained by alpha-particle heating. Integrated modelling using different models for ICRH absorption and ICRH/NBI interaction reproduces the effect qualitatively. Best agreement with experiment is obtained with the European Transport Solver/Heating and Current Drive workflow.

  • Metabolomics analysis identifies different metabotypes of asthma severity
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The European respiratory journal. - : European Respiratory Society (ERS). - 1399-3003 .- 0903-1936. ; 49:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we sought to determine whether asthma has a metabolic profile and whether this profile is related to disease severity. We characterised the serum from 22 healthy individuals and 54 asthmatics (12 mild, 20 moderate, 22 severe) using liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry-based metabolomics. Selected metabolites were confirmed by targeted mass spectrometry assays of eicosanoids, sphingolipids and free fatty acids. We conclusively identified 66 metabolites; 15 were significantly altered with asthma (p≤0.05). Levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, cortisone, cortisol, prolylhydroxyproline, pipecolate and N-palmitoyltaurine correlated significantly (p<0.05) with inhaled corticosteroid dose, and were further shifted in individuals treated with oral corticosteroids. Oleoylethanolamide increased with asthma severity independently of steroid treatment (p<0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed two patterns: 1) a mean difference between controls and patients with mild asthma (p=0.025), and 2) a mean difference between patients with severe asthma and all other groups (p=1.7×10−4). Metabolic shifts in mild asthma, relative to controls, were associated with exogenous metabolites (e.g. dietary lipids), while those in moderate and severe asthma (e.g. oleoylethanolamide, sphingosine-1-phosphate, N-palmitoyltaurine) were postulated to be involved in activating the transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) receptor, driving TRPV1-dependent pathogenesis in asthma. Our findings suggest that asthma is characterised by a modest systemic metabolic shift in a disease severity-dependent manner, and that steroid treatment significantly affects metabolism.

  • KTH-3D-TOTAL : A 3D dataset for discovering spatial structures for long-term autonomous learning
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 13th International Conference on Control Automation Robotics and Vision, ICARCV 2014. - : IEEE. - 9781479951994 ; , s. 1528-1535
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Long-term autonomous learning of human environments entails modelling and generalizing over distinct variations in: object instances in different scenes, and different scenes with respect to space and time. It is crucial for the robot to recognize the structure and context in spatial arrangements and exploit these to learn models which capture the essence of these distinct variations. Table-tops posses a typical structure repeatedly seen in human environments and are identified by characteristics of being personal spaces of diverse functionalities and dynamically changing due to human interactions. In this paper, we present a 3D dataset of 20 office table-tops manually observed and scanned 3 times a day as regularly as possible over 19 days (461 scenes) and subsequently, manually annotated with 18 different object classes, including multiple instances. We analyse the dataset to discover spatial structures and patterns in their variations. The dataset can, for example, be used to study the spatial relations between objects and long-term environment models for applications such as activity recognition, context and functionality estimation and anomaly detection.
