  • The impact of optical and thermal properties on the performance of flat plate solar collectors
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Renewable Energy. - 0960-1481. ; 28:3, s. 331-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of the optical properties on the annual performance of flat plate collectors in a Swedish climate has been estimated with the MINSUN program. The collector parameters were determined with a theoretically based calculation program verified from laboratory measurements. The importance of changes in solar absorptance and thermal emittance of the absorber, the addition of a teflon film or a teflon honeycomb, antireflection treatment of the, cover glazing and combinations of these improvements were investigated. The results show that several improvements can be achieved for solar thermal absorbers. A combined increase in absorptance from 0.95 to 0.97 and a decrease in emittance from 0.10 to 0.05 increase the annual performance with 6.7% at 50 degreesC operating temperature. The increase in performance by installing a teflon film as second glazing was estimated to 5.6% at 50 degreesC. If instead a teflon honeycomb is installed, a twice as high performance increase is obtained, 12.1 %. Antireflection treatment of the cover glazing increases the annual output with 6.5% at 50 degreesC. A combination of absorber improvements together with a teflon honeycomb and an antireflection treated glazing results in a total increase of 24.6% at 50 degreesC. Including external booster reflectors increases the expected annual output at 50 degreesC to 19.9-29.4% depending on reflector material. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Spatial analysis of extreme precipitation in Sweden 1961-2000
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - 0044-7447. ; 33:4-5, s. 187-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extreme daily precipitation in Sweden for the years 19612000 is analyzed with respect to spatial scale, regional variations and associated weather types. Correlograms based on a lag distance of 30 km estimated the spatial scale of variation of the annual mean precipitation, the 99(th) percentile of daily precipitation and the average of annual maximum daily precipitation to 100 km, 60-100 km and 40-70 km, respectively. Regions of correlation with respect to precipitation at 82 stations during days of extreme events are identified through Maximum-Likelihood Factor Analysis. Eleven factors are found to provide the optimum factor solution. Weather types for the days of extreme events are determined by an objective classification scheme, based on daily sea level pressure, which is modified by subjective inclusion of fronts. In total, 63% of the extreme events occurred during cyclonic weather types, 32% during frontal, 3% during directional and 2% during anticyclonic types. The frequency of the weather types during extreme events varied between the regions however.

  • Finite beams in reflective volume Bragg gratings : theory and experiments
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics. - 0018-9197 .- 1558-1713. ; 44:1, s. 81-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a theoretical model to describe finite beams incident on reflective volume Bragg gratings. We also give experimental results that verify our model. From these results, we identify certain properties of reflective volume Bragg gratings, such as beam waist, incidence angle and beam profile, that have direct impact on the design of laser cavities that include such gratings. We also show how these gratings can act as spatial mode filters.

  • Quasi-two-level Yb:KYW laser with a volume Bragg grating
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 15:21, s. 13930-13935
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a volume Bragg grating as input coupler, we demonstrate an Yb:KYW laser with a very small quantum defect (1.6%) and an output power of 3.6 W. The laser was longitudinally diode-pumped at 982 nm and the laser wavelength was determined by the grating to 998 nm, with a laser bandwidth of 10 GHz (33 pm). Due to the low quantum defect, the laser should be readily scalable to 20 W or more without critical thermal effects.

  • A preliminary overview of monitoring for raptors in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acrocephalus. - 0351-2851. ; 33:154/155, s. 277-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish diurnal raptor and owl monitoring is to a large extent based on species specific projects with long-standing traditions, migration counts at specific migration hot-spots, and a nation-wide bird survey. The best-known and longlived projects are the Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus and White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla projects, which continue to make important contributions to the knowledge about effects of environmental pollutants in wild birds. For many diurnal birds of prey, trend estimation is based on the long time series (1973–) of migration counts at Falsterbo in southernmost Sweden, whereas possibilities to detect population trends in most owl species are still relatively low. New protocols, however, are being developed to better incorporate night active-birds such as owls in the Swedish Bird Survey. Much raptor monitoring data is being collected by volunteers. Sweden has several valuable networks for bird monitoring in general, although special efforts could be directed towards better coordination and publication of the on-going raptor work within a common framework. Potential threats (e.g. forestry, wind power development, train collisions, declining prey populations, pollutants) and their effects on raptor populations should preferably also be included in monitoring protocols to a higher extent than at present.

  • Overuse of EEG and ECG in children with breath-holding spells and its implication for the management of the spells
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Acta Pædiatrica. - 1651-2227. ; 113:2, s. 317-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: Breath-holding spells (BHS) are common in children, but evidence-based clinical guidelines are lacking. We investigated a large population-based cohort of BHS patients, to propose a refined description of typical BHS and guidelines for its management.METHODS: In a cross-sectional retrospective study, patients diagnosed with BHS in Southern Sweden 2004-2018 were recruited. Disease characteristics and diagnostic data were collected from patient medical records.RESULTS: In total, 519 patients, mean age at diagnosis 19.8 ± 13.8 months with equal gender distribution, were included. In 48.3%, BHS had already been diagnosed after one spell. During spells, 78.0% of patients were unresponsive. For 71.5%, atonic, tonic, tonic-clonic or myoclonic seizures were reported, and 78.0% of patients had a spell lasting less than 1 min. Electroencephalography was conducted in 30.4% and Electroencephalography in 45.1%. Six children (3.8%) had a pathological electroencephalogram, four of which had concomitant epilepsy and only 0.9% of children had electrocardiogram findings suggesting pathology, none showing long QT syndrome.CONCLUSION: Children with BHS were frequently subjected to unnecessary diagnostic interventions. We characterise a typical presentation of BHS and propose a management-algorithm, which is expected to reduce unnecessary usage of electroencephalography and electroencephalography.

  • Autoantibody targets in vaccine-associated narcolepsy
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Autoimmunity. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0891-6934 .- 1607-842X. ; 49:6, s. 421-433
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder with a yet unknown cause, but the specific loss of hypocretin-producing neurons together with a strong human leukocyte antigen (HLA) association has led to the hypothesis that autoimmune mechanisms might be involved. Here, we describe an extensive effort to profile autoimmunity repertoires in serum with the aim to find disease-related autoantigens. Initially, 57 serum samples from vaccine-associated and sporadic narcolepsy patients and controls were screened for IgG reactivity towards 10 846 fragments of human proteins using planar microarrays. The discovered differential reactivities were verified on suspension bead arrays in the same sample collection followed by further investigation of 14 antigens in 176 independent samples, including 57 narcolepsy patients. Among these 14 antigens, methyltransferase-like 22 (METTL22) and 5'-nucleotidase cytosolic IA (NT5C1A) were recognized at a higher frequency in narcolepsy patients of both sample sets. Upon sequence analysis of the 14 proteins, polymerase family, member 3 (PARP3), acyl-CoA-binding domain containing 7 (ARID4B), glutaminase 2 (GLS2) and cyclin-dependent kinase-like 1 (CDKL1) were found to contain amino acid sequences with homology to proteins found in the H1N1 vaccine. These findings could become useful elements of further clinical assays that aim towards a better phenotypic understanding of narcolepsy and its triggers.

  • Designing with Urban Sound : Exploring methods for qualitative sound analysis of the built environment
  • 2019
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The licentiate thesis Designing with Urban Sound explores the constitution and qualitative characteristics of urban sonic space from a design-oriented and practice-based perspective. The act of lifting forth and illuminating the interaction between architecture, the creation of sound and a sonic experience aims to examine and develop useful tools and methods for the representation, communication and analysis of the exterior sonic environment in complex architectural spaces. The objective is to generate theoretical and practical knowledge within the field of urban sound planning and design by showing examples of different and complementary ways of communicating and analyzing sound than those which are commonly recognized.

  • The importance of financial resources and ownership of intellectual property rights for university spin-offs : the cases of Finland and Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1462-6004 .- 1758-7840. ; 27:7, s. 1125-1147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This paper focuses on medical device university spin-offs (USOs), taking into account the peculiarities of financial and nonfinancial support and intellectual property rights (IPRs). The authors declare that these parameters play a significant role in business development at the early stages. Design/methodology/approach: This empirical data consist of individual and group interviews in Finland and Sweden, which are later inductively analyzed. Findings: The results show that public financial support contributes to the formation and start of sales stages in small countries and local markets. However, at the validation stage, approaches for supporting entrepreneurship in the field of medical devices may differ. The ownership of IPRs assists in the development of entrepreneurship in the region due to the transfer of research results and researchers to the industry and increases the number of spin-offs and the cooperation of universities with business. Originality/value: This contribution is in the identification of the key parameters for the formation, support and development of the USOs from the point of view of the availability of financial resources and the ownership of IPRs.

  • Myeloid leukaemia in systemic lupus erythematosus--a nested case-control study based on Swedish registers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Rheumatology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1462-0324 .- 1462-0332. ; 48:10, s. 1222-1226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk factors for leukaemic transformation and myeloid leukaemia in patients with SLE. METHODS: A national SLE cohort identified through SLE discharge diagnoses in the Swedish hospital discharge register during 1964 to 1995 (n = 6438) was linked to the national cancer register. A nested case-control study in SLE patients who developed acute or chronic myeloid leukaemia was performed with SLE patients without malignancy as controls. Medical records from cases and controls were reviewed and bone marrow specimens were re-evaluated. A Medline search of previously published cases of SLE and myeloid leukaemia was performed. RESULTS: After confirmation of SLE diagnosis according to the ACR criteria, eight patients with SLE and myeloid leukaemia and 18 SLE controls were included in the study. Preceding leucopenia was significantly associated with leukaemia development, whereas other SLE manifestations were not. Two cases had a preceding bone marrow confirming myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Only two cases were significantly treated with cyclophosphamide or AZA. A Medline search resulted in only 15 previously published cases of coincident SLE and myeloid leukaemia. Preceding MDS was reported in five of these, whereas only eight had been treated with cytotoxic drugs. CONCLUSION: Low-dose chemotherapy was not a major cause of myeloid malignancy in our population-based cohort of SLE patients nor in the reported cases from literature. Leucopenia was a risk factor for myeloid leukaemia development and an MDS was frequently seen. Therefore bone marrow investigation should be considered in SLE patients with long-standing leucopenia and anaemia.

  • Increased risk for postoperative periprosthetic fracture in hip fracture patients with the Exeter stem than the anatomic SP2 Lubinus stem
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery. - : Springer. - 1863-9933 .- 1863-9941. ; 47, s. 803-809
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare the cumulative incidence of postoperative periprosthetic fracture (PPF) in a cohort of femoral neck fracture (FNF) patients treated with two commonly used cemented stems: either a collarless, polished, tapered Exeter stem or the anatomic Lubinus SP2 stem.METHODS: In this retrospective multicenter cohort study of a consecutive series of patients, we included 2528 patients of age 60 years and above with an FNF who were treated with either hemiarthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty using either a polished tapered Exeter stem or an anatomic Lubinus SP2 stem. The incidence of PPF was assessed at a minimum of 2 years postoperatively.RESULTS: The incidence of PPF was assessed at a median follow-up of 47 months postoperatively. Thirty nine patients (1.5%) sustained a PPF at a median of 27 months (range 0-96 months) postoperatively. Two of the operatively treated fractures were Vancouver A (5%), 7 were Vancouver B1 (18%), 10 were Vancouver B2 (26%), 7 were Vancouver B3 (18%), and 13 were Vancouver C (32%). The cumulative incidence of PPF was 2.3% in the Exeter group compared with 0.7% in the SP2 group (p < 0.001). The HR was 5.4 (95% CI 2.4-12.5, p < 0.001), using the SP2 group as the denominator.CONCLUSIONS: The Exeter stem was associated with a higher risk for PPF than the Lubinus SP2 stem. We suggest that the tapered Exeter stem should be used with caution in the treatment of FNF.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (identifier: NCT03326271).

  • Sketching Architectural Sound Design Using Virtual Reality
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings Internoise 2022. - : International Institute of Noise Control Engineering.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A sketch is an important tool that architects use to visualize and formulate design decisions. The sketch process is a crucial stage where design iterations and decisions can be made fast, easy and abundant. Sketching facilitates idea spawning, design assessment, modification and communication. This exploratory study focuses on qualities with Virtual Reality that can be used for sketching sound in the architectural design process. The study was influenced by Contextual Inquiry Interviews and used trained architects as respondents. The main result of this study is a summary of the pros and cons on how Virtual Reality work today and discusses how to develop a test bed for future research. One of the main cons, as of now, is the bulkiness of the equipment and the fact that it is not intended for sketching sound, yet. Computing speeds and acoustic rendering is another issue on the technical side. A possible benefit of using Virtual Reality is that it gives architects the possibility of incorporating sound in the architectural design process, thus making it an integral part of the practice.

  • Spatio-sonic site survey using ambisonics recordings and VR rendering — designing soundscapes in the early planning process
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 AES International Conference on Spatial and Immersive Audio. - : Audio Engineering Society, Inc..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As a part of the on-going city move in Malmberget, Gällivare, the inhabitants of Malmberget mining area need not only new housing but also increased communal services. To accommodate this, the municipality is building a new public building called the Multiactivitiy building. The building will house public services such as: library, sports centre, swimming pools and recreational spaces. The central lobby space creates a hub which connects the different parts of the building and serves as a communal meeting place. The proposed building site, and the site of this study, is in the centre of downtown Gällivare. The study focuses on how ambisonics recordings can be used as a part of the site survey in the early stages of the architectural design process. The spatio-sonic qualities of the existing site are integral to the architectural design process, not only as documentation and analysis of the site’s conditions, but as an integrated design parameter (on par with lighting, climatic, contextual, and other site-specific conditions). A Virtual Reality model of the site, auralized with ambisonics recordings, is the main artefactual outcome of this study. Additional documentation of the site survey includes spatio-sonic mapping of the site plan, written (autoethnographic) impressions from the main surveyor, photographs, ambisonics recordings and a summary and analysis of respondents’ answers to questionnaires in combination with soundwalks. The conclusion of the study is that it is feasible to produce simple, virtual, auralized models that can be used as a base for sketching with sound in architecture.

  • Acoustic design of open-plan offices
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The acoustic conditions in open-plan offices were investigated in a Nordic cooperation project. Measurements were carried out in five open-plan offices along with a questionnaire to gather the staff’s subjective judgments.A programme for the acoustic measurements was drawn up, specifying how to perform the measurements and which type of parameters to measure. The acoustic parameters included are Reverberation time T20, Early decay time (EDT), Clarity (C50), Speech transmission index (STI), Speech intelligibility index (SII), Privacy index (PI), Rate of spatial decay of sound pressure levels per distance doubling (DL2 ), Excess of sound pressure level with respect to a reference curve (DLf), and background noise levels in occupied and unoccupied offices.A refurbishment programme was carried out in two of the offices. Measurements were performed after refurbishment and a questionnaire was completed. It is concluded that parameters relating to sound propagation, such as DL2 and DLf, are appropriate for the acoustic evaluation of open-plan spaces.A refurbishment programme was carried out in two open-plan offices. It has been shown that DL2 and DLf are sensitive to the acoustic treatment carried out and that they also reflect an improvement in the subjective judgment as regards the acoustic environment in general. Moreover, these parameters can be converted into a (comfort) radius indicating the distance for achievement of a certain reduction of the sound level from a sound source. This application could serve as a practical tool for the acoustic planning of open-plan offices.

  • Precision Diagnostics in Myeloid Malignancies : Development and Validation of a National Capture-Based Gene Panel
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Genes Chromosomes and Cancer. - 1045-2257. ; 63:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gene panel sequencing has become a common diagnostic tool for detecting somatically acquired mutations in myeloid neoplasms. However, many panels have restricted content, provide insufficient sensitivity levels, or lack clinically validated workflows. We here describe the development and validation of the Genomic Medicine Sweden myeloid gene panel (GMS-MGP), a capture-based 191 gene panel including mandatory genes in contemporary guidelines as well as emerging candidates. The GMS-MGP displayed uniform coverage across all targets, including recognized difficult GC-rich areas. The validation of 117 previously described somatic variants showed a 100% concordance with a limit-of-detection of a 0.5% variant allele frequency (VAF), achieved by utilizing error correction and filtering against a panel-of-normals. A national interlaboratory comparison investigating 56 somatic variants demonstrated highly concordant results in both detection rate and reported VAFs. In addition, prospective analysis of 323 patients analyzed with the GMS-MGP as part of standard-of-care identified clinically significant genes as well as recurrent mutations in less well-studied genes. In conclusion, the GMS-MGP workflow supports sensitive detection of all clinically relevant genes, facilitates novel findings, and is, based on the capture-based design, easy to update once new guidelines become available. The GMS-MGP provides an important step toward nationally harmonized precision diagnostics of myeloid malignancies.

  • Towards Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Logistics
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Logistics is regarded as an area of high importance in business, contributing to profitability and competitiveness. Logistics is crucial also from a societal perspective, since logistical activities count for a big proportion of a country’s GNP, and since effective logistics systems can help reducing some of the environmental problems we face today. Higher education has an important role to play in order to provide business and society with well-educated logistics personnel. Since not much research is published within higher education in logistics, the purpose of this thesis was defined as:To contribute to the knowledge on teaching and learning logistics in higher education.More specifically, two research questions were set up:RQ1: What knowledge and skills are important for students to learn during highereducation in logistics? RQ2: How can students’ learning of these skills and knowledge be facilitated?A comprehensive literature review serves as a basis for the study. The literature on logistics education gives limited guidance concerning what is to be learned during higher education in logistics, as well as how to facilitate learning within logistics. These findings indicate that the logistics teaching faculty do not base their course designs and teaching practices on solid knowledge on what and how to teach.Although a major finding of my work is that more research is needed, some more concrete propositions can be made. In order to reach some kind of answers to the research questions, a selection of pedagogical theories was applied on logistics education with help from illustrating examples, partly found in literature, and partly from specific studies performed as part of this thesis.Concerning the first research question, I propose a tentative model, illustrating how different logistics knowledge and skills can be positioned against each other. A division is made between subject-specific and generic knowledge and skills, and two core generic skills within logistics are proposed: Total cost analysis and Structured investigation method. From pedagogical literature, the concept of thresholds was introduced. A threshold refers to something that is troublesome for students to overcome, but once passed leads to a new way of understanding. The identification of the thresholds associated with acquiring important knowledge and skills, is therefore important for teachers. Some thresholds concerning logistics education are discussed in the thesis. For the two core generic skills proposed above, it is suggested that ‘case-specific adaptation of total cost models’ is a threshold for total cost analysis, and ‘investigation planning’ is suggested as a threshold for structured investigation method. The question of how something can be learned is dependent on what is to be learned. Since there is a lack of clear answers concerning the what, the second research question (focusing the how) is difficult to answer in a concrete manner. On a general level, some findings were found though.Logistics is a discipline where education has strong emphasis on usefulness for the workinglife. Problem- and practice-based instructional methods are therefore recommended to create learning situations, where learning is extended from theoretical models as such, to their application in realistic settings. Reflection upon the appropriateness of the models then becomes essential. The use of educational games, simulation, and field-based projects are examples of such methods. In pedagogical literature, the term pedagogical content knowledge addresses the need for teachers to know the subject-matter (the content) in a way that makes it possible for him/her to make it understandable for the students. This kind of knowledge is built up from a number of knowledge components. One of those concerns knowledge about what is troublesome for students, which bridges over to the previously described threshold concepts. Another component is knowledge of students’ pre-understanding. An example of a method for capturing such pre-understanding is given in the thesis. Given that a teacher knows the subject-matter, the students pre-understanding, and some other contextual factors, a good knowledge on how to instruct and assess the students is crucial. The instructional methods are to a big extent case-specific, but as indicated above, problem- and practice-based  methods are often to recommend within logistics education.Based on the findings and discussions in this study, a number of suggestions for future research are proposed. Among those is the need to identify the thresholds connected to learning core logistical knowledge, and to investigate appropriate instructional methods for helping students to overcome these thresholds.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fragmentation reactions in a carbon target with beams of 11Li and 14Be at relativistic energies have been studied in a kinematically complete experiment at the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. Excited states in 11Li and 14Be were obtained from the data in the inelastic channel. The measured cross sections with the core nucleus in the final state show that in the 14Be case core polarization plays an important role. In the one-neutron knockout channels the measured angular correlations between fragment and neutron are asymmetric, which demonstrates the presence of states with different parities in the 11Li and 14Be ground states. For 10Li a low-lying virtual s-state, a p-state and evidence for a d-state could be extracted from the data, while the 12Be+n system shows resonances with more complicated structure.

  • Nine sound-art installations in public space
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 41st International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering 2012 (INTER-NOISE 2012). - Red Hook, NY, USA : Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aspect of sound as a design element in an architectural context has been discussed for a long time, but there are still today very few permanent projects put into practice. The functional use of acoustics is easily comprehended when utilized to reduce unwanted noise from roads, or when it is perfected to convey speech and music in concert halls. To add sounds to create a sense of space, use it as a quality or defining identity is however still an unexplored field of knowledge. Finding the right balance between creating a quality for the space with dynamics and variety, while still being sustainable over time is challenging. The paper presents theories, methods, findings and results from a large project including nine installations. The project concerns indoor sound installations in large public spaces in Stockholm including acoustic investigations, electro acoustic installations and composition of sound installations for the specific space. The method is both scientific and art-based. The sound design is used as a way of empowering site-specific functions and architectural themes, but also in some cases as a solitary intentional characteristic quality of the space.

  • A method to integrate patterned electrospun fibers with microfluidic systems to generate complex microenvironments for cell culture applications
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Biomicrofluidics. - : AIP Publishing. - 1932-1058. ; 6:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The properties of a cell's microenvironment are one of the main driving forces in cellular fate processes and phenotype expression in vivo. The ability to create controlled cell microenvironments in vitro becomes increasingly important for studying or controlling phenotype expression in tissue engineering and drug discovery applications. This includes the capability to modify material surface properties within well-defined liquid environments in cell culture systems. One successful approach to mimic extra cellular matrix is with porous electrospun polymer fiber scaffolds, while microfluidic networks have been shown to efficiently generate spatially and temporally defined liquid microenvironments. Here, a method to integrate electrospun fibers with microfluidic networks was developed in order to form complex cell microenvironments with the capability to vary relevant parameters. Spatially defined regions of electrospun fibers of both aligned and random orientation were patterned on glass substrates that were irreversibly bonded to microfluidic networks produced in poly-dimethyl-siloxane. Concentration gradients obtained in the fiber containing channels were characterized experimentally and compared with values obtained by computational fluid dynamic simulations. Velocity and shear stress profiles, as well as vortex formation, were calculated to evaluate the influence of fiber pads on fluidic properties. The suitability of the system to support cell attachment and growth was demonstrated with a fibroblast cell line. The potential of the platform was further verified by a functional investigation of neural stem cell alignment in response to orientation of electrospun fibers versus a microfluidic generated chemoattractant gradient of stromal cell-derived factor 1 alpha. The described method is a competitive strategy to create complex microenvironments in vitro that allow detailed studies on the interplay of topography, substrate surface properties, and soluble microenvironment on cellular fate processes.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A family-centred, developmentally supportive approach to newborn intensive care referred to as NIDCAP (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Programme) has caught considerable interest during recent years. In this paper we review the scientific context behind its conceptual framework and summarize our experience from 10 years of training, implementation and research. We present the short- and long-term medical and developmental outcome of our Swedish NIDCAP studies as well as attitudes of nursing staff and neonatologists. Furthermore, ethical issues and scientific obstacles concerning this concept of care are discussed.

  • No indication of increased quite sleep in infants receiving care based on Newborn Individulized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP)
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta Pædiatrica. - 1651-2227. ; 91:3, s. 318-322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been proposed that the developmentally supportive care of very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants provided by the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) can improve the infants’ opportunities for rest and sleep. The aim of the present study was to determine whether quiet sleep (QS) in VLBW infants is affected by NIDCAP care. Twenty-two infants with a gestational age of <32 weeks at birth randomly received either NIDCAP (n = 11) or conventional care (n = 11). These two groups were comparable (mean (SD)) with respect to birthweight (1021 (240) vs. 913 (362) g, respectively) and gestational age (27.1 (1.7) vs. 26.4 (1.8) weeks). The infants in the NIDCAP group were cared for in a separate room by a group of specially trained nurses and subjected to weekly NIDCAP observations until they reached a postconceptional age (PCA) of 36 weeks. Quiet sleep (QS) was assessed from 24-h amplitude-integrated EEGs recorded at 32 and 36 weeks of PCA. The percentage of time [mean (SD)] spent in QS at 32 weeks of PCA was 33.5 (2.6) % for the NIDCAP group and 33.3 (6.9) % for the control infants (ns). At 36 wk, the corresponding values were 24.5 (3.2) % and 25.7 (4.7) %, respectively (ns). The number of QS periods/24 h decreased equally in both groups in association with maturation: from 24.6 (3.3) to 16.8 (1.8) and from 25.0 (5.8) to 17.5 (3.3), at 32 weeks, and 36 wk of PCA, respectively (NS). Conclusions: There were no indications of increased QS at 32 or 36 weeks of postconceptional age among VLBW infants who received care based on NIDCAP.
