  • Catheter ablation of symptomatic atrial fibrillation : Sex, ethnicity, and socioeconomic disparities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Heart rhythm O2. - : Elsevier. - 2666-5018. ; 3:6 Part B, s. 766-770
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Catheter ablation for treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF), AF ablation, is more effective than antiarrhythmic drugs in reducing AF burden, reducing symptoms and increasing health-related quality of life. Although females more often experience AF-related symptoms, and have more severe symptoms, have lower quality of life, and experience more serious adverse effects of antiarrhythmic drugs than males, they are less likely to undergo AF ablation. Potential explanations for the disparity include older age at diagnosis, longer AF duration, a greater number of comorbidities, more extensive atrial fibrosis, and presumed lower success rate and more complications after AF ablation in women. Studies have failed to show sex-related differences in AF recurrence or serious complications following AF ablation but show more nuisance bleeds in women. Ethnic minorities, such as African Americans and Latin Americans, and individuals of low socioeconomic status are also less likely to undergo AF ablation, possibly associated with greater numbers of comorbidities, lack of patient advocacy, healthcare costs, and inadequate insurance coverage. Inclusion of marginalized patient groups in clinical trials of AF treatment and a personalized, patient-centered approach may expand equality in utilization of AF ablation.

  • Food and Fashion : Water Management and Collective Action among Irrigation Farmers and Textile Industrialists in South India
  • 1996
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent years, much ofthe political debate in the West, East aud South has focused on the decentralization of responsibilities from the state to private enterprises and NGOs. But what potential is there for local communities to create their own govenlance structures able to deal with issues up till recently seen as the responsibility of the state? In this thesis, answer to this question is sought by analyzing two case studies from the semi-arid Coimbatore-region in South India from an institutionai perspective. One case concerns the efforts to involve farmers in irrigation water management in the Lower Bhavani Project, while the other focuses on the pressure on textile industrialists in Tirupur city to collectively treat their polluted effluent water. In both cases, the new distribution ofresponsibilities required that groups ofwater users would succeed in establishing new entities for collective action among themselves strong enough to prevent free-riding on a massive scale. Overcoming three main obstacles proved crucial in this process; meeting coordination costs, re-defining the notion of free-riding among resource users, and meeting motivation costs. Factors both within and outsicte the loeal community affected the degree ofsuccess. The distribution and lise of economic, moral and physical power between various actors and the interconnectedness between local and external institutions proved crucial for the establishrnent oflocal govemance stmctures. Moreover, the historical relation between the respective user group and the state has to a large extent affected the goals and strategies oflocal entities of eolleetive action.Clearly, resource management problems at localleve1 can not be solved by simply decentralizing responsibilities from the state to groups ofresource users. Rather, the state could playan important role by initiating, supporting and directing slich local entities of collective action.

  • Environmental considerations in the planning of large dam projects : a study on Environmental Impact Statements and the Southeastern Anatolia Project
  • 2003
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Large dam projects have played a key role in supporting societal development in the past and continue to be launched, primarily in developing countries. However, large dam projects also cause extensive environmental impacts in the river system, which may reduce the river system's capacity to provide goods, services, and other values apart from those generated by the project. The Environmental Impact Statement (ElS) has become a key instrument for enabling prevention, minimization, and mitigation of significant adverse environmental effects of major projects in early planning. The potential of EISs to support compromise building between conflicting interests is also increasingly recognized. In reality, the great potentials of the ElS are rarely fully utilized, which motivate further improvements. This thesis has three main objectives, Le. (i) to examine the motives behind large dam projects, their impact on project planning, and some constraints for full project realization, (ii) to identify shortcomings in EISs and other project-related reports regarding the extent to and manner in which potential environmental effects of large dam projects are attended to, and (iii) to suggest measures for how to improve the capacity of EISs to support impact minimization and compromise building in project plarming and decision-making.Based on a case study on the Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) in southeast Turkey, it was found that the objectives and planning of large dam projects can change significantly over time, in response to changes in the underlying ambitions and motives for development. While changes to the design may increase the dam's technical capacity to store water and generate hydropower, the actual potential to utilize its installed capacities during recurrent droughts may be limited. An increased scale and number ofdam project objectives may also lead to increased competition over the river water. Full realization of dam project objectives may be hampered by the climate and by growing water demands of competing uses. Moreover, an analysis of GAP-related reports revealed imbalances in the total degree of attention given to individual environmental problems, different categories of environmental problems, and to environmental problems of dam projects and irrigation schemes, respectively, as weIl as shifts in the focus of attention over time from early plarming to implementation. The fmdings suggest that project-related reports tend to focus on problematic environmental conditions that motivate project implementation, and on potential environmental effects that may undermine project productivity, viability, or longevity, particularly in planning and early implementation. In contrast, those potential environmental effects with no apparent bearing on the financial or operational success of the project tend to be largely neglected unless strong incentives are created. The analysis ofEISs of large dam projects revealed shortcomings in the attention given to root causes and impact pathways involved in the generation of higher-order environmental effects and cumulative impacts. Important imbalances were also found in the degree of attention given to different types of environmental effects. In order to improve the capacity of EISs to explain how higher-order effects and cumulative impacts may arise, network analysis and cause-effect diagrams should be increasingly adopted. This thesis also proposes a conceptual framework to facilitate a comparison of desired and undesired effects, based on the view of a river system as a provider of goods and services, which enables the translation of ecological effects into their societal and economic implications.

  • A TEXTILE WEB : Jewish immigrants in Gothenburg in the early nineteenth century and their impact on the textile market
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - Oxfordshire : Routledge. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 40:4, s. 485-511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 1830s has been singled out as the decade in which the Swedish consumer market really started to expand. In the same period, cotton textile production expanded in the Gothenburg area. A small group of immigrant Jewish families played an important role in this development. The impact of Jewish merchants on the growth of the consumer goods market is consistent with international research. Their entrepreneurial activities and renewal of textile production and trade have been emphasized. This has, however, not been paid much attention to in the Swedish research. This article discusses what impact the Jewish immigrants had on the increase of the textile market in Gothenburg and its surroundings. Through a couple of case studies and examples, we want to elucidate the significance of Jewish textile production and trade: Jewish calico printers started up mass production of fashionable fabrics in the 1820s. Furthermore, Jewish merchants spread their goods to customers in the countryside in cooperation with Swedish pedlars. The authors also discuss different reasons why the Jews played such a significant role during this particular period: The role of the legislation, the Jewish textile tradition, access to capital, networks, effective distribution, a growing consumer demand, and the geographical context.

  • Jewish Merchants and the Consumer Market in early 19th Century Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: ESSHC 2012 Glasgow, Scotland, UK 11 -14 April 2012 – Material and Consumer Culture /MAT06: The Early Modern Consumer (R)evolution(s) in Comparative Perspective.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The 1830s has been singled out as the decade when the Swedish market of consumer goods really started to expand. Changing consumer patterns were a crucial condition for the continued industrial development in the 19th century and a key element in the growth of a modern society. In relation to this, previous research has emphasized the importance of the importing firms in Gothenburg – Sweden’s second town and main port city – since imported goods were sold on to traders focused on the domestic market. At the same time, the production of consumer goods like calicoes, sugar and tobacco increased in Gothenburg. Furthermore, Sweden’s commercial structure developed and the availability of goods rose markedly. In this process, we have in our earlier research emphasized the cooperation between different types of commercial actors such as peddlers, village shops, urban wholesalers and retail traders. When Jews were allowed to settle down in Sweden in the late 18th century, a great deal of them soon established themselves as wholesalers and retailers in textiles. The impact of the Jewish group on the growth of the consumer goods market is consistent with international research, as well as the connection between Jewish commercial actors and the business and industry of textiles. In our paper we would like to discuss the role of the Jewish entrepreneurs in the early 19th century Sweden, and their contribution to the renewal of the consumption market. This is a part of our research project, “A Jewish web of textiles and trade”. The main purpose of the project is to increase our knowledge of how modern and attractive textiles and other consumer goods reached a growing range of Swedish customers. In this context, the integration of the Swedish domestic market with the European and global market is an essential aspect. The numerically small group of Jews in Gothenburg gives an opportunity to study different types of relations, which in turn can be linked to previous research on business and kinship networks in the early modern period. We also want to call attention to aspects of ethnicity, gender and class in the study of the Jewish minority and it’s role on the consumption market.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Det nordiske historikermøtet, Tromsö 11–14 augusti 2011 Sessionen: Etnisitet, kjønn og entreprenørskap i nordiske byer, ca. 1850-2000.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the eighteenth century, Sweden and other western European countries were characterized by a growing domestic market. Demand for goods such as coffee, sugar, tea and cotton fabric increased among a significant portion of the population. This demand, termed the ”consumer revolution,” is now seen as an important condition for the continued industrial development in the nineteenth century and a key element in the development of modern society. In addition to increased demand and greater supply, a functional distribution of goods was essential for maintaining this growth in consumption. Parallel to change in consumption patterns, Sweden’s commercial structure began to develop, leading to a marked rise in the availability of goods. Diverse commercial forms such as peddling and village shops as well as urban wholesale and retail traders played a prominent role in this growth. Among these commercial actors, Jewish merchants were a particularly interesting and important group. This article deals specifically with the production and distribution roles of Jewish merchants in early to mid-nineteenth century Gothenburg. Within this article, case studies of Moses Frenkel, the spouses Pineus, and L.E. Magnus & Co. have revealed that products were distributed in a wide geographical area mainly in western Sweden both through retailers in Gothenburg and by peddlers. This study also shows several examples of how this Jewish group cooperated through business and personal contacts. For example, they were members of the same companies and financially supported each other. In addition, they were often related to one another by marriage. The article stresses the importance of the Jewish merchants’ international network of contacts, which often consisted of fellow Jewish merchants. Many questions are yet to be answered, and these case studies would benefit through more systematic analysis of the commercial activity of Jewish merchants in Gothenburg. The small number of Jews within this group creates an opportunity to study the distinct roles of different types of contacts. In addition, this study could also be linked to previous research on trade networks in the early modern period. Further study of trade and commercial relations with foreign merchants and producers would make it possible to discuss the integration of Sweden into a European and even global market of consumer goods.

    • The proportion of ageing citizens is high and increasing in most EU countries and there is a growing political pressure to make sure that the costs for the elderly care programs do not grow out of bounds. The focus of the ageing population programs is at the 75+ age group. The younger age group - the "young elderly" that is the focus in our research - does not get much attention. Recently, we have noticed a growing insight that preventive programs could be helpful as healthier young elderly will help produce healthier seniors (the 75 + age group) which over time will have significant effects on the costs for health and social care for the ageing population. Our study is a synergistic combination of two timely research areas: digitalisation and the ageing population. The focus combination of digital wellness services and the young elderly is unique. We build on a research program that is operating since January 2014. Our current research in progress aims at finding out how a digital coach - a personal trainer called Vendla - can be worked out for digital wellness services.

  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 38:3, s. 313-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conjugates with specific binding to the epidermal growth factor receptor, EGFR, of interest for radionuclide based imaging and therapy were prepared using mouse epidermal growth factor, mEGF, and dextran. In one type of conjugate, mEGF was coupled to dextran by reductive amination in which the free amino group on the mEGF N-terminal reacted with the aldehyde group on the reductive end of dextran. The end-end coupled conjugate could be further activated by the cyanopyridinium agent CDAP, thereby introducing tyrosines to the dextran part. In the other type of conjugate, the cyanylating procedure using CDAP was applied, first to activate dextran and then allowing for the amino terminus of mEGF to randomly attach to the dextran. In the latter case, radionuclide-labelled tyrosines or glycines could be added in the same conjugation step. All types of mEGF-dextran conjugates had EGFR-specific binding since the binding could be displaced by an excess of non-radioactive mEGF. The conjugates were to a large extent internalized in the test cells and the associated radioactivity was retained intracellularly for different times depending on both the type of cells and conjugate applied. Different intracellular 'traffic routes' for the radionuclides are discussed as well as applications for both imaging and therapy.

  • 1995
  • Ingår i: The Biochemical journal. - 0264-6021. ; 311 ( Pt 2), s. 667-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The subcellular localization of two members of a highly glycosylated protein group present in lysosomal membranes in most cells, the lysosome-associated membrane proteins 1 and 2 (Lamp-1 and Lamp-2), was examined in human neutrophil granulocytes. Antibodies that were raised against purified Lamp-1 adn Lamp-2 gave a distinct granular staining of the cytoplasm upon immunostaining of neutrophils. Subcellular fractionation was used to separate the azurophil and specific granules from a light-membrane fraction containing plasma membranes and secretory vesicles, and Western blotting was used to determine the presence of the Lamps in these fractions. The results show that Lamp-1 and Lamp-2 are present in the specific-granule-enriched fraction and in the light-membrane fraction, but not in the azurophil granules. Separation of secretory vesicles from plasma membranes disclosed that the light-membrane Lamps were present primarily in the secretory-vesicle-enriched fraction. During phagocytosis both Lamp-1 and Lamp-2 became markedly concentrated around the ingested particle and they both appear on the cell surface when the secretory organelles are mobilized.

    • To review the longitudinal trajectories - and the factors influencing their development - of mental health problems in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Systematic review methods were employed. Searches of six databases used keywords and MeSH terms related to children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, mental health problems, and longitudinal research. After the removal of duplicates, reviewers independently screened records for inclusion, extracted data (outcomes and influencing factors), and evaluated the risk of bias. Findings were tabulated and synthesized using graphs and a narrative. Searches identified 94,662 unique records, from which 49 publications were included. The median publication year was 2015. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were the most commonly included population in retrieved studies. In almost 50% of studies, trajectories of mental health problems changed by < 10% between the first and last time point. Despite multiple studies reporting longitudinal trajectories of mental health problems, greater conceptual clarity and consideration of the measures included in research is needed, along with the inclusion of a more diverse range of populations of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

    • AIMS: A sub-analysis of the ESC-EHRA European Lead Extraction ConTRolled (ELECTRa) Registry to evaluate the clinical impact of antithrombotic (AT) on transvenous lead extraction (TLE) safety and efficacy.METHODS AND RESULTS: ELECTRa outcomes were compared between patients without AT therapy (No AT Group) and with different pre-operative AT regimens, including antiplatelets (AP), anticoagulants (AC), or both (AP + AC). Out of 3510 pts, 2398 (68%) were under AT pre-operatively. AT patients were older with more comorbidities (P < 0.0001). AT subgroups, defined as AP, AC, or AP + AC, were 1096 (31.2%), 985 (28%), and 317 (9%), respectively. Regarding AP patients, 1413 (40%) were under AP, 1292 (91%) with a single AP, interrupted in 26% about 3.8 ± 3.7 days before TLE. In total, 1302 (37%) patients were under AC, 881 vitamin K antagonist (68%), 221 (17%) direct oral anticoagulants, 155 (12%) low weight molecular heparin, and 45 (3.5%) unfractionated heparin. AC was 'interrupted without bridging' in 696 (54%) and 'interrupted with bridging' in 504 (39%) about 3.3 ± 2.3 days before TLE, and 'continued' in 87 (7%). TLE success rate was high in all subgroups. Only overall in-hospital death (1.4%), but not the procedure-related one, was higher in the AT subgroups (P = 0.0500). Age >65 years and New York Heart Association Class III/IV, but not AT regimens, were independent predictors of death for any cause. Haematomas were more frequent in AT subgroups, especially in AC 'continued' (P = 0.025), whereas pulmonary embolism in the No-AT (P < 0.01).CONCLUSIONS: AT minimization is safe in patients undergoing TLE. AT does not seem to predict death but identifies a subset of fragile patients with a worse in-hospital TLE outcome.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The human melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4r) was successfully expressed in Sf9 cells using the baculovirus infection system. N- and C-terminally His-tagged receptors generated B-max values of 14 and 23 pmol receptor/mg membrane protein, respectively. The highest expression level obtained with the C-terminally His-tagged MC4r corresponded to 0.25 mg active receptor/litre culture volume. Addition of a viral signal peptide at the N-terminus of the His-tagged MC4r did not improve the expression level. Confocal laser microscopy studies revealed that both the N- and C-terminally tagged MC4r did not accumulate intracellularly and were mainly located in the plasma membrane. The recombinant receptors showed similar affinity for the agonist NDP-MSH (K-d = 11 nM) as to MC4r expressed in mammalian cells. Functional coupling of the highest expressed C-terminal tagged receptor to endogenous Galpha protein was demonstrated through 6TPgammaS binding upon agonist stimulation of the receptor. K-i values for the ligands MTII, HS014, alpha-, beta-, and gamma-MSH are comparable to the values obtained for MC4r expressed in mammalian cells. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Produktionen sker i ca 6000 företag. Även forskning inom utemiljö bedrivs i första hand i Alnarp, men äve vis SLU iUltuna.

  • TRPV1 expression and activity during retinoic acid-induced neuronal differentiation

  • Ingår i: Neurochemistry International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0197-0186 .- 1872-9754. ; 55:8, s. 768-774
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1 (TRPV1) is a Ca2+-permeable channel primarily expressed in dorsal root ganglion neurons. Besides its function in thermogenic nociception and neurogenic inflammation, TRPV1 is involved in cell migration, cytoskeleton reorganisation and in neuronal guidance.  To explore the TRPV1 level and activity during conditions for neuronal maturation, TRPV1-expressing SHSY5Y neuroblastoma cells were differentiated into a neuronal phenotype using all-trans-retinoic acid (RA). We show that RA highly up-regulated the total and cell surface TRPV1 protein expression but the TRPV1 mRNA level was unaffected. The up-regulated receptors were localised to the cell bodies and the developed neurites. Furthermore, RA increased both the basal intracellular free Ca2+ concentration by 30 % as well as the relative capsaicin-induced Ca2+ influx. The results show that TRPV1 protein expression increases during RA-induced differentiation in vitro, which generates an altered intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis.

  • Maternal characteristics and pregnancy outcomes in the NICE birth cohort: an assessment of self-selection bias
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-7058 .- 1476-4954. ; 35:25, s. 9014-9022
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Prospective birth cohorts are essential for identifying associations between exposures and outcomes. However, voluntary participation introduces a potential bias due to self selection since the persons that chose to participate may differ in background characteristics and behaviors. Objectives: To investigate potential bias due to self-selection in the Nutritional impact onImmunological maturation duringChildhood in relation to theEnvironment (NICE) birth cohort in northern Sweden. Methods: Women in the NICE birth cohort (N = 621) were compared to nonparticipating pregnant women in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden who were eligible for participation (N = 4976) regarding maternal characteristics and lifestyle. Maternal characteristics and pregnancy outcomes were compared between the groups and associations between exposures (smoking, folic acid, BMI, parity, education) and pregnancy outcomes (birth weight and gestational age) were analyzed by linear regression analyses, examining any interaction with the group. Results: NICE participants were more highly educated, older and more likely to cohabit than the non-participants. They more often took folic acid and multivitamin supplements and less often smoked during early pregnancy. Pregnancy outcomes (mode of delivery, gestational age at delivery, birth weight and APGAR score) did, however, not differ significantly between participants and non-participants. Smoking, BMI, education and parity affected gestational age and birth weight, but the associations were of similar magnitude in participants and non-participants, with no significant effect on the group. Conclusion: Self-selection to the NICE study was evident in some factors related to lifestyle and socioeconomic characteristics but did not appear to skew pregnancy outcomes or alter well-known effects of certain lifestyle parameters on pregnancy outcomes.

  • The molecular basis of human igg-mediated enhancement of C4b-binding protein recruitment to group a streptococcus
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Immunology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-3224. ; 10:JUN
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Streptococcus pyogenes infects over 700 million people worldwide annually. Immune evasion strategies employed by the bacteria include binding of the complement inhibitors, C4b-binding protein (C4BP) and Factor H in a human-specific manner. We recently showed that human IgG increased C4BP binding to the bacterial surface, which promoted streptococcal immune evasion and increased mortality in mice. We sought to identify how IgG promotes C4BP binding to Protein H, a member of the M protein family. Dimerization of Protein H is pivotal for enhanced binding to human C4BP. First, we illustrated that Protein H, IgG, and C4BP formed a tripartite complex. Second, surface plasmon resonance revealed that Protein H binds IgG solely through Fc, but not Fab domains, and with high affinity (IgG-Protein H: KD = 0.4 nM; IgG-Fc-Protein H: KD ≤1.6 nM). Each IgG binds two Protein H molecules, while up to six molecules of Protein H bind one C4BP molecule. Third, interrupting Protein H dimerization either by raising temperature to 41°C or with a synthetic peptide prevented IgG-Protein H interactions. IgG-Fc fragments or monoclonal human IgG permitted maximal C4BP binding when used at concentrations from 0.1 to 10 mg/ml. In contrast, pooled human IgG enhanced C4BP binding at concentrations up to 1 mg/ml; decreased C4BP binding at 10 mg/ml occurred probably because of Fab-streptococcal interactions at these high IgG concentrations. Taken together, our data show how S. pyogenes exploits human IgG to evade complement and enhance its virulence. Elucidation of this mechanism could aid design of new therapeutics against S. pyogenes.

  • Predicting eye stinging potential of baby shampoos by assessing TRPV1 channel activity
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Toxicology Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-4274 .- 1879-3169. ; 211, s. S113-S113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) receptor is one of the most well characterized pain-inducing receptors. The purpose of this study was to predict human eye stinging of 19 baby bath and shampoo formulations by studying TRPV1 activity. The NociOcular test, a novel recombinant neuronal in vitro model with high expression of functional TRPV1 channels was used to test shampoo formulations containing surfactants, preservatives, and fragrances (sodium laureth sulfate, cocoamidopropylbetaine, cocoglucoside, sodium benzoate, quaternium-15, etc.). The increase in intracellular free Ca2+ was analysed by fluorescence during exposure. TRPV1-specific Ca2+ influx was abolished when the TRPV1 channel antagonist capsazepine was applied to the cells prior to shampoo samples. The positive control, i.e. adult shampoo, was the most active sample tested in the NociOcular test and also induced the worst stinging sensation. The negative control, i.e. marketed baby shampoo, was negative in both tests. Seven of the formulations induced stinging in the human test, and of those six were positive in the NociOcular test. Twelve of the formulations were classified as non-stinging in the human test, and of those 10 were negative in the NociOcular test. None of the established in vitro tests for eye irritation were able to correctly predict the human stinging sensation of the baby products. Our data support that the TRPV1 channel is a principle mediator of eye stinging sensation induced by baby bath and shampoo formulations and that the NociOcular test may be a valuable in vitro tool to predict human eye stinging sensation.

    • The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) channel is one of the most well-characterized pain-inducing receptors. The purpose of this study was to predict human eye stinging of 19 baby bath and shampoo formulations by studying TRPV1 activity, as measured by increase in intracellular free Ca2+. The NociOcular test, a novel recombinant neuronal in vitro model with high expression of functional TRPV1 channels, was used to test formulations containing a variety of surfactants, preservatives, and fragrances. TRPV1-specific Ca2+ influx was abolished when the TRPV1 channel antagonist capsazepine was applied to the cells prior to shampoo samples. The positive control, an adult shampoo that contains cocamide monoethanolamine (CMEA), a known stinging ingredient, was the most active sample tested in the NociOcular test. The negative control, a marketed baby shampoo, was negative in the NociOcular and human tests. Seven of the formulations induced stinging in the human test, and of those six were positive in the NociOcular test. Twelve formulations were classified as nonstinging in the human test, and of those ten were negative in the NociOcular test. There was no correlation between the clinical stinging results for the baby formulations and the data generated from other in vitro eye irritation assays (cytosensor microphysiometer, neutral red uptake, EpiOcular, transepithelial permeability). Our data support that the TRPV1 channel is a principal mediator of eye-stinging sensation induced by baby bath and shampoo formulations and that the NociOcular test may be a valuable in vitro tool to predict human eye stinging sensation.

    • The 4th Ovarian Cancer Consensus Conference of the Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup was held in Vancouver, Canada, in June 2010. Representatives of 23 cooperative research groups studying gynecologic cancers gathered to establish international consensus on issues critical to the conduct of large randomized trials. Group C, 1 of the 3 discussion groups, examined recurrent ovarian cancer, and we report the consensus reached regarding 4 questions. These included the following: (1) What is the role of cytoreductive surgery for recurrent ovarian cancer? (2) How do we define distinct patient populations in need of specific therapeutic approaches? (3) Should end points for trials with recurrent disease vary from those of first-line trials? (4) Is CA-125 progression alone sufficient for entry/eligibility into clinical trials?

  • Navigating change - managers' experience of implementation processes in disability health care : a qualitative study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Health Services Research. - : BioMed Central. - 1472-6963. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Effective implementation processes play a central role in health care organizations and affect the care of patients. Managers are pivotal in facilitating the use of new practices, but their experience and how it affects the implementation outcome are still largely unknown. In the field of disability health care in particular, managers experiences have scarcely been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore managers' experiences of the implementation process when transferring new practices into disability health care settings.METHODS: Semi-structured individual telephone interviews were conducted with managers at disability health care organizations in four administrative regions in central Sweden. A total of 23 managers with formal managerial responsibility from both public and private health care were strategically selected to be interviewed. The interviews were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis with an inductive approach.RESULTS: The analysis resulted in two themes about factors influencing the implementation process: firstly, Contextual factors set the agenda for what can be achieved, which highlighted aspects that hinder or enable the implementation process, such as internal and external conditions, the workplace culture, the employees and managers' attitudes and openness to change: secondly, Leadership in the winds of change, which described the challenges of balancing managerial tasks with leading the change, and the importance of a leadership that involves the participation of the employees.CONCLUSIONS: This study explored how and to what extent managers address and manage the implementation process and the many associated challenges. The findings highlight the importance of leadership support and organizational structure in order to transfer new practices into the work setting, and to encourage an organizational culture for leading change that promotes positive outcomes. We suggest that identifying strategies by focusing on contextual factors and on aspects of leadership will facilitate implementation processes.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The SWAN (Structured Water Dance Intervention) study was retrospectively registered on April 9, 2019 and is available online at ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT03908801).

  • The influence of contextual factors on an intervention for people with disabilities from support persons’ and health personnel's perspectives : a focus group study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Rehabilitation Sciences. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2673-6861. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Contextual factors influence interventions in healthcare and pose a particular challenge in interventions designed for people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). Exploring support persons’ and health personnel’s experience of an intervention may improve our understanding of the influence of contextual factors. Such exploration is important for revealing areas and focus points for future implementations. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore support persons’ and health personnel’s experience of contextual factors during involvement in an intervention for people with PIMD.Methods: This focus group study includes eight groups, comprising a total of 34 support persons and health personnel, at habilitation centres at four regions in central Sweden. Data were analysed inductively using a content analysis approach. Results: Three themes emerged from the analysis of the informants’ perspectives on the contextual factors: (1) structure and support enhances intervention feasibility; (2) an intervention’s benefit for people with PIMD increases its acceptability; and (3) being engaged and involved increases support persons’ and health personnel’s motivation. Our findings show that the implementation of an intervention for people with PIMD should focus on the recipients of the intervention in its context, forming a clear communication plan. A training programme should be provided for the recipients and providers of the intervention.Discussion: Finally, the implementation process can be facilitated by creating space for staff to contribute and by encouraging participation and ownership for everyone involved. Using a co-design strategy can enable a shared responsibility to solve the identified challenges, while contributing to the development and design of future interventions for people with disabilities.

  • Definitions and operationalization of mental health problems, wellbeing and participation constructs in children with ndd : Distinctions and clarifications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 18:4, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Children with impairments are known to experience more restricted participation than other children. It also appears that low levels of participation are related to a higher prevalence of mental health problems in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). The purpose of this conceptual paper is to describe and define the constructs mental health problems, mental health, and participation to ensure that future research investigating participation as a means to mental health in children and adolescents with NDD is founded on conceptual clarity. We first discuss the difference between two aspects of mental health problems, namely mental disorder and mental illness. This discussion serves to highlight three areas of conceptual difficulty and their consequences for understanding the mental health of children with NDD that we then consider in the article: (1) how to define mental health problems, (2) how to define and assess mental health problems and mental health, i.e., wellbeing as separate constructs, and (3) how to describe the relationship between participation and wellbeing. We then discuss the implications of our propositions for measurement and the use of participation interventions as a means to enhance mental health (defined as wellbeing). Conclusions: Mental disorders include both diagnoses related to impairments in the developmental period, i.e., NDD and diagnoses related to mental illness. These two types of mental disorders must be separated. Children with NDD, just like other people, may exhibit aspects of both mental health problems and wellbeing simultaneously. Measures of wellbeing defined as a continuum from flourishing to languishing for children with NDD need to be designed and evaluated. Wellbeing can lead to further participation and act to protect from mental health problems.

  • Neurofunctional endpoints assessed in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells for estimation of acute systemic toxicity
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0041-008X .- 1096-0333. ; 245:2, s. 191-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of the EU-funded integrated project ACuteTox is to develop a strategy in which general cytotoxicity, together with organ-specific toxicity and biokinetic features, are used for the estimation of human acute systemic toxicity. Our role in the project is to characterise the effect of reference chemicals with regard to neurotoxicity. We studied cell membrane potential (CMP), noradrenalin (NA) uptake, acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity, acetylcholine receptor (AChR) signalling and voltage-operated calcium channel (VOCC) function in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells after exposure to 23 pharmaceuticals, pesticides or industrial chemicals. Neurotoxic alert chemicals were identified by comparing the obtained data with cytotoxicity data from the neutral red uptake assay in 3T3 mouse fibroblasts. Furthermore, neurotoxic concentrations were correlated with estimated human lethal blood concentrations (LC50). The CMP assay was the most sensitive assay, identifying eight chemicals as neurotoxic alerts and improving the LC50 correlation for nicotine, lindane, atropine and methadone. The NA uptake assay identified five neurotoxic alert chemicals and improved the LC50 correlation for atropine, diazepam, verapamil and methadone. The AChE, AChR and VOCC assays showed limited potential for detection of acute toxicity. The CMP assay was further evaluated by testing 36 additional reference chemicals. Five neurotoxic alert chemicals were generated and orphendrine and amitriptyline showed improved LC50 correlation. Due to the high sensitivity and the simplicity of the test protocol, the CMP assay constitutes a good candidate assay to be included in an in vitro test strategy for prediction of acute systemic toxicity.

  • Are we educating engineers for sustainability? Comparison between obtained competences and Swedish industry's needs
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. - : Emerald. - 1467-6370. ; 13:3, s. 305-320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The aim of this study is to contribute to the quality improvement and long-term strategic development of education for sustainable development (ESD) in engineering education curricula.Design/methodology/approach – The content in 70 courses in environment and SD were characterized and quantified using course document text analysis. Additionally, two questionnaires were sent to students and alumni at Chalmers, and interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with representatives from 16 Swedish companies and five organizations.Findings – It was found that industry demands a broader range of competences in SD amongst engineers in general than what is currently provided. In total, 35 per cent of alumni claim they encounter sustainability issues from sometimes to daily in their work. However, only half of them believe they possess enough competences to make decisions from a sustainability perspective. Quantity, coverage and the level of integration in the educational programme all appear to be important for the students' perceived competences on SD and for the importance that they put on achieving SD.Originality/value – Earlier research has reported on how to further develop the idea and design of ESD and on competence needs in general. Few attempts have been made to assess industry's needs of competences in SD. This paper sheds light on how engineering universities educate for SD and benchmarks this to industry's needs in an exploratory case study, using Chalmers as an example.

  • An indicator framework to guide food system sustainability transition – The case of Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental and Sustainability Indicators. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 2665-9727. ; 22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Well-aligned food policies are needed at both national and international level to guide food system transformation towards sustainability. Rigorous indicator frameworks are essential in order to facilitate discussion of priorities, enable comparisons, assessment and progress monitoring, and ensure accountability. In this study, we develop a national framework for a sustainable food system, using Sweden as a case. Our framework, the Food System Sustainability House, advances the literature on sustainable food system frameworks in three distinct ways. Firstly, it is tailored to a specific national context (Sweden in our case); secondly, it distinguishes between impacts of domestic production arising within territorial boundaries and impacts related to Swedish consumption independent of country of origin; and thirdly, to facilitate policy priorities, it suggests how different dimensions of sustainability are interlinked at a conceptual level. From a scientific perspective, the Food System Sustainability House postulates the interlinkages between the societal objectives of the food system, the environmental foundations on which production takes place, and the economic system and governance which in the framework are suggested to function as enablers for an overall sustainable system. From a policy perspective, the framework provides a much-needed basis for assessing food system sustainability by suggesting indicators within a comprehensive set of sustainability themes at national level for monitoring distinct perspectives. It also provides the necessary basis for a discussion on how sustainability dimensions are interlinked.

  • Computerized Training of Working Memoryfor Patients with Acquired Brain Injury
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Open Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation. - : Scientific Research Publishing. - 2332-1822 .- 2332-1830. ; 3, s. 46-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Patients with acquired brain injury often experience impaired working memory(WM), a condition that can make everyday life activities and work difficult. Objectives: This studyinvestigates the effects of computerized WM training on WM skills, cognitive tests, activity performanceand estimated health and whether the effects of computerized WM training can be attributedto sex or time since injury. Methods: Forty-eight patients with acquired brain injury underwentcomputerized WM training. Patients were tested by a neuropsychologist and interviewedby an occupational therapist just prior and 20 weeks after completion of training. Results: Patientswho participated in computerized WM training significantly improved their WM skills shown inWM index, their neuropsychological test scores, and their self-estimated health scores. They alsosignificantly improved their performance of individually defined WM-related everyday activitiesand their satisfaction with the performance of these activities. There was a significant differencein terms of WM index, WM-related daily activity performance, and satisfaction with respect to timesince injury. Conclusion: Computerized WM training can improve cognitive and everyday performancefor patients with acquired brain injury. Patients can improve their cognitive functions along time after suffering a brain injury or disease. This effect is greater if WM training is used earlyin the rehabilitation.

  • Cellular processing in the SW1222 cell line of mAb A33 directly and indirectly radiohalogenated
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Oncology Reports. - 1021-335X .- 1791-2431. ; 16:1, s. 159-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Investigations into the cellular processing of radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for their further use in radioimmunodiagnosis and cancer therapy are needed in order to understand the fate of internalized and catabolized mAbs. The anti-colorectal cancer mAb, A33, was labelled with 76Br and 125I using the direct Chloramine-T method, or by labelling N-succinimidyl para-(tri-methylstannyl) benzoate and its further conjugation to the mAb. The cellular processing of the four conjugates was investigated in SW1222 cells in vitro. Uptake of mAb was rapid, peaking after 14-16 h. Intracellular degradation was slow and the early loss of radioactivity was due to dissociation of cell-surface bound mAb. The indirect labelling resulted in stronger binding of the mAb as well as prolonged intracellular retention of the radiolabel. Direct and indirect halogen radiolabelling results in different cell-processing patterns of radiolabels, and radioactive catabolic products follow different routes of cellular excretion. The results of this cellular study indicate that indirect labelling is preferable to the direct Chloramine-T method.

  • Optimized indirect (76)Br-bromination of antibodies using N-succinimidyl para-[76Br]bromobenzoate for radioimmuno PET
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Medicine and Biology. - 0969-8051 .- 1872-9614. ; 27:8, s. 837-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Monoclonal antibody 38S1 was radiobrominated with the positron emitter (76)Br (T(1/2) = 16.2 h). Indirect labeling was performed using N-succinimidyl para-(tri-methylstannyl)benzoate (SPMB) as the precursor molecule. SPMB was labeled using Chloramine-T yielding N-succinimidyl para-[(76)Br]bromobenzoate, which was then conjugated to the antibody. Optimization of the labeling conditions and further conjugation gave a total yield ( mean+/-max error) of 49+/-2%. The immunoreactivity of the antibodies was retained after labeling. Thus, antibodies intended for positron emission tomography can be labeled with (76)Br, which gives high yields and preserved immunoreactivity when using the SPMB technique described.

  • Characterization of water-soluble hemicelluloses from spruce and aspen employing SEC/MALDI mass spectroscopy
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Carbohydrate Research. - 1873-426X .- 0008-6215. ; 337:8, s. 711-717
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Partly depolymerized hemicelluloses isolated from wood chips of spruce and aspen employing microwave treatment were resolved using size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) into oligo- and polysaccharide fractions containing components with a narrow range of sizes, as determined by MALDI mass spectroscopy. The degree of substitution with acetyl moieties (DS) was also calculated on the basis of the MALDI-MS spectra obtained prior to and following deacetylation. For spruce hemicelluloses, the low molecular mass fraction contained small arabino-4-O-methylglucuronoxylan oligosaccharides, with DP values ranging from 4 to ~20, separated primarily on the basis of their charge density. The fraction eluted last consisted of an O-acetyl-(galacto)glucomannan polysaccharide of peak-average DP value (DPp) 14. The degree of substitution with acetyl groups (DS) decreased with decreasing DP, a value DS of 0.39 being obtained for the fraction with DPp 12. For the aspen hemicelluloses, the SEC fractions eluted first contained an acidic O-acetyl-4-O-methylglucuronoxylan polysaccharide with DP ranging from 10 to ~28 and an average DS of ~0.75. The fractions eluted last consisted of oligosaccharide mixtures composed primarily of small neutral O-acetyl-xylooligosaccharides (DPp 6, DS 0.41), together with minor quantities of an O-acetyl-glucomannan.
