  • Layer-by-layer 3D printing of Si micro- and nanostructures by Si deposition, ion implantation and selective Si etching
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 12th IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology (IEEE-NANO), 2012. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467321983 ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we report a method for layer-by-layer printing of three-dimensional (3D) silicon (Si) micro- and nanostructures. This fabrication method is based on a sequence of alternating steps of chemical vapor deposition of Si and local implantation of gallium (Ga+) ions by focused ion beam (FIB) writing. The defined 3D structures are formed in a final step by selectively wet etching the non-implanted Si in potassium hydroxide (KOH). We demonstrate the viability of the method by fabricating 2 and 3-layer 3D Si structures, including suspended beams and patterned lines with dimensions on the nm-scale.

  • Long-wavelength infrared quantum-dot based interband photodetectors
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Infrared physics & technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1350-4495 .- 1879-0275. ; 54:3, s. 287-291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the design and fabrication of (Al)GaAs(Sb)/InAs tensile strained quantum-dot (QD) based detector material for thermal infrared imaging applications in the long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) regime. The detection is based on transitions between confined dot states and continuum states in a type-II band lineup, and we therefore refer to it as a dot-to-bulk (D2B) infrared photodetector with expected benefits including long carrier lifetime due to the type-II band alignment, suppressed Shockley-Read-Hall generation-recombination due to the relatively large-bandgap matrix material, inhibited Auger recombination processes due to the tensile strain and epitaxial simplicity. Metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy was used to grow multiple (Al)GaAs(Sb) QD layers on InAs substrates at different QD nominal thicknesses, compositions, doping conditions and multilayer periods, and the material was characterized using atomic force and transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared absorption spectroscopy. Dot densities up to 1 x 10(11) cm(-2), 1 x 10(12) cm(-2) and 3 x 10(10) cm(-2) were measured for GaAs, AlGaAs and GaAsSb QDs, respectively. Strong absorption in GaAs, AlGaAs and GaAsSb multilayer QD samples was observed in the wavelength range 6-12 mu m. From the wavelength shift in the spectral absorption for samples with varying QD thickness and composition it is believed that the absorption is due to an intra- valance band transition. From this it is possible to estimate the type-II inter-band transition wavelength, thereby suggesting that (Al)GaAs(Sb) QD/InAs heterostructures are suitable candidates for LWIR detection and imaging.

  • Antipsychotic-induced extrapyramidal symptoms in patients with schizophrenia : associations with dopamine and serotonin receptor and transporter polymorphisms
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0031-6970 .- 1432-1041. ; 63:3, s. 233-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Little is known about the influence of polymorphisms of the dopamine and serotonin system on the risk for extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) during treatment with antipsychotic drugs. Methods: Of 119 subjects with schizophrenia treated with antipsychotics, 63 had current or previous EPS (acute dystonia, parkinsonism, tardive dyskinesia), and 56 had no such symptoms. All subjects were genotyped for a total of eight dopamine and serotonin receptor and transporter polymorphisms: the Taq1A polymorphism of the dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) gene, the Msc1 polymorphism of the dopamine D3 receptor (DRD3) gene, the variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphism of the dopamine transporter (DAT1) gene, four polymorphisms (102T/C, His452Tyr, 516 C/T, and Thr25Asn) of the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor (5HTR2A) gene, and the 5HTTLPR polymorphism of the serotonin transporter (5HTT) gene. Results: The frequency of the A1 allele of the DRD2 Taq1A polymorphism was significantly higher in the EPS group than in the control group [16% vs. 7%, P=0.040; odds ratio (OR) 2.4; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-5.7]. Also, the 9 repeat allele of the DAT1 VNTR polymorphism was significantly more common in the EPS group (42% vs. 28%, P=0.030; OR 1.9; 95% CI 1.1-3.3). Being a carrier of both DRD2 Taq1A A1 and DAT1 VNTR 9 repeat alleles was also significantly associated with the occurrence of EPS (19% vs. 6%, P=0.040; OR 4.0; 95% CI 1.05-15.2) No significant differences in allele frequencies were found for the other polymorphisms. Conclusion: Presence of the Taq1A A1 allele of the DRD2 and the 9 repeat allele of the DAT1 VNTR polymorphisms might be risk factors for EPS caused by antipsychotic drugs.

  • Serum calcium and the risk of prostate cancer
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Cancer Causes and Control. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-7225 .- 0957-5243. ; 20:7, s. 1205-1214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies have suggested an association between high dietary intake of calcium and the risk of prostate cancer. Calcium-rich diet has been suggested to affect the serum levels of Vitamin D, and thereby promote cancer. We conducted the largest study of the association between prediagnostic serum levels of calcium and the risk of prostate cancer. We examined the incidence of prostate cancer in relation to prediagnostic serum calcium levels in a prospective cohort study of 22,391 healthy Swedish men, of which 1,539 incident cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed during the 30 years of follow-up until December 2006. Serum levels of calcium were measured at baseline, and categorized into quartiles. Cox regression was used to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). We found no evidence of an association between prediagnostic serum levels of calcium and risk of prostate cancer (HR for trend = 0.99 [95% CI;0.94-1.03]). However, a moderate significant negative association was seen in men with a BMI above 25 and aged below 45 years at baseline (Highest vs. lowest quartile, HR = 0.63 [95% CI;0.40-0.99]). These data do not support the hypothesis that high serum calcium levels is a risk factor for prostate cancer. On the contrary, the data suggest that high serum levels of calcium in young overweight men may be a marker for a decreased risk of developing prostate cancer.

  • Platelet function recovery after ticagrelor withdrawal in patients awaiting urgent coronary surgery
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European journal of cardio-thoracic surgery : official journal of the European Association for Cardio-thoracic Surgery. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1010-7940 .- 1873-734X. ; 51:4, s. 633-637
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Dual antiplatelet therapy with ticagrelor and aspirin is associated with an increased risk of perioperative bleeding complications. Current guidelines recommend therefore discontinuation of ticagrelor 5 days before surgery to allow sufficient recovery of platelet function. It is not known how the time to recovery varies between individual patients after discontinuation of ticagrelor. METHODS: Twenty-five patients accepted for urgent coronary artery bypass surgery and treated with ticagrelor and aspirin were included in a prospective observational study. Platelet aggregation was evaluated with impedance aggregometry at five timepoints 12-96 h after discontinuation of ticagrelor. In a subset of patients (n = 15), we also tested the ex vivo efficacy of platelet concentrate supplementation on platelet aggregation. RESULTS: There was a gradual increase in mean adenosine diphosphate-induced platelet aggregation after discontinuation of ticagrelor. After 72 h, mean aggregation was 38 +/-23 aggregation units (U), which is above a previously suggested cut-off of 22 U, when patients can be operated without increased bleeding risk. However, there was a large interindividual variability (range 488 U at 72 h) and 6/24 patients (25%) had <22 U after 72 h. Ex vivo administration of platelet concentrate did not improve adenosine diphosphate-induced aggregation at any timepoint after ticagrelor discontinuation. CONCLUSIONS: Adenosine diphosphate-induced aggregation was acceptable after 72 h in the majority of patients but with a large interindividual variability. Due to the large variability, platelet function testing may prove to be a valuable tool in timing of surgery in patients with ongoing or recently stopped ticagrelor treatment. Adenosine diphosphate-induced aggregation was not improved by addition of platelet concentrate.

  • Geographically congruent large-scale patterns of plastid haplotype variation in the European herbs Silene dioica and S-latifolia (Caryophyllaceae)
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society. - 1095-8339. ; 161:2, s. 153-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The closely related dioecious herbs Silene latifolia and Silene dioica are widespread and predominantly sympatric in Europe. The species are interfertile, but morphologically and ecologically distinct. A study of large-scale patterns of plastid DNA (polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism) haplotypes in a sample of 198 populations from most of the European ranges of both species revealed extensive interspecific haplotype sharing. Four of the 28 detected haplotypes were frequent (found in > 40 populations) and widespread. Three of these frequent haplotypes occurred in both species and the geographic distribution of each haplotype was broadly congruent in both species. Each of these three, shared and widespread haplotypes is likely to have colonized central and/or northern Europe after the last glaciation from one or more of refugial areas in southern Europe. Interspecific hybridization and plastid introgression within refugial regions and/or during the early stages of postglacial expansion is the most plausible explanation for the broadly similar distribution patterns of the shared, frequent chloroplast haplotypes in the two species. The fourth frequent, widespread haplotype was absent from S. latifolia and almost entirely restricted to Nordic S. dioica. It is most likely that this haplotype spread into the Nordic countries from a central or northern European source or from a refugial area in Russia. • 1991
  • Ingår i: Annals of Thoracic Surgery. - 0003-4975. ; 52:6, s. 30-1329
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A case of absent right aortic cusp causing serious aortic incompetence in a neonate is reported. A "bicuspidalization" repair broke down within 24 hours, but reoperation with annular enlargement and insertion of a 19-mm prosthetic valve resulted in complete recovery. This rare but life-threatening anomaly of the aortic valve can be recognized with Doppler echocardiography. Valve replacement in conjunction with aortic annular enlargement should be performed as primary repair.

  • Ingår i: INFRARED PHYSICS and TECHNOLOGY. - Exeter : Elsevier BV. - 1350-4495 .- 1879-0275. ; 52:6, s. 272-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonant optical pumping across the band gap was used as artificial doping in InAs/In0.15Ga0.85As/GaAs quantum dots-in-a-well infrared photodetectors. Through efficient filling of the quantum dot energy levels by simultaneous optical pumping into the ground states and the excited states of the quantum dots, the response was increased by a factor of 10. Low temperature photocurrent peaks observed at 120 and 148 meV were identified as intersubband transitions emanating from the quantum dot ground state and the quantum dot excited state, respectively by a selective increase of the electron population in the different quantum dot energy levels.

  • Bias mediated tuning of the detection wavelength in asymmetrical quantum dots-in-a-well infrared photodetectors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - New York : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 93:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bias-mediated tuning of the detection wavelength within the infrared wavelength region is demonstrated for quantum dots-in-a-well and dots-on-a-well infrared photodetectors. By positioning the InAs quantum dot layer asymmetrically in an 8 nm wide In0.15Ga0.85As/GaAs quantum well, a shift in the peak detection wavelength from 8.4 to 10.3 mu m was observed when reversing the polarity of the applied bias. For a dots-on-a-well structure, the peak detection wavelength was tuned from 5.4 to 8 mu m with small changes in the applied bias. These tuning properties could be essential for applications such as modulators and dual-color infrared detection.

  • Optimising uniformity of InAs/(InGaAs)/GaAs quantum dots grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 252:15, s. 5525-5529
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A route towards optimisation of uniformity and density of InAs/(InGaAs)/GaAs quantum dots grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) through successive variations of the growth parameters is reported. It is demonstrated that a key parameter in obtaining a high density of quantum dots is the V/III ratio, a fact which was shown to be valid when either AsH3 (arsine) or tertiary-butyl-arsine (TBA) were used as group V precursors. Once the optimum V/III ratio was found, the size distribution was further improved by adjusting the nominal thickness of deposited InAs material, resulting in an optimum thickness of 1.8 monolayers of InAs in our case. The number of coalesced dots was minimised by adjusting the growth interruption time to approximately 30 s. Further, the uniformity was improved by increasing the growth temperature from 485 °C to 520 °C. By combining these optimised parameters, i.e. a growth temperature of 520 °C, 1.8 monolayers InAs thickness, 30 s growth stop time and TBA as group V precursor, a full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of the low temperature luminescence band of 40 meV was achieved, indicating a narrow dot size distribution.

    • Interband and intersubband transitions of lateral InAs/In0.15Ga0.85As dots-in-a-well quantum dot infrared photodetectors were studied in order to determine the origin of the photocurrent. The main intersubband transition contributing to the photocurrent (PC) was associated with the quantum dot ground state to the quantum well excited state transition. By a comparison between intersubband PC measurements and the energy level scheme of the structure, as deduced from Fourier transform photoluminescence (FTPL) and FTPL excitation spectroscopies, the main transition contributing to the PC was identified.

  • Human PSEN1 Mutant Glia Improve Spatial Learning and Memory in Aged Mice
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cells. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-4409. ; 11:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PSEN1 ΔE9 mutation causes a familial form of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by shifting the processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) towards the generation of highly amyloidogenic Aβ42 peptide. We have previously shown that the PSEN1 ΔE9 mutation in human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived astrocytes increases Aβ42 production and impairs cellular responses. Here, we injected PSEN1 ΔE9 mutant astrosphere-derived glial progenitors into newborn mice and investigated mouse behavior at the ages of 8, 12, and 16 months. While we did not find significant behavioral changes in younger mice, spatial learning and memory were paradoxically improved in 16-month-old PSEN1 ΔE9 glia-transplanted male mice as compared to age-matched isogenic control-transplanted animals. Memory improvement was associated with lower levels of soluble, but not insoluble, human Aβ42 in the mouse brain. We also found a decreased engraftment of PSEN1 ΔE9 mutant cells in the cingulate cortex and significant transcriptional changes in both human and mouse genes in the hippocampus, including the extracellular matrix-related genes. Overall, the presence of PSEN1 ΔE9 mutant glia exerted a more beneficial effect on aged mouse brain than the isogenic control human cells likely as a combination of several factors.

  • FEM-analysis of a concrete dam in northern Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Association of State Dam Safety Officials, Dam Safety 2015. - : Association of State Dam Safety Officials.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Krångfors is a concrete dam located in northern Sweden that was constructed in three stages from 1928 to 1973. This expansion in different stages resulted in a complicated structural design. Extensive cracks have been noticed in parts of the structure. Two main hypotheses for the cause of these cracks were initially established; 1) alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and 2) large temperature variations in the structure. Petrographic analyses of concrete cores showed that the concrete ballast consisted of greywacke with potential for ASR. However, accelerated testing of concrete cores showed that the potential for expansion due to ASR was limited. To analyze the effect from temperature variations, three dimensional FEManalyses were performed. The results from these FEM-analyses are the main focus of this paper. These analyses showed that adding the annual temperature variation and possible shrinkage to the FEM-model gave results that could explain the observed cracks.

    • Objective: Narrative identity is an essential level of personality, and to de-velop, the life narrative should entail both stability and change. In this study, we examine the meaning of change in repeated narratives about occupational experiences. Method: Fifty- nine individuals were interviewed at age 25, 29, and 33. In these interviews 544 narratives and 142 sets of repeated narratives were identified, of these 39 sets of repeated narratives had changed between interviews. A thematic narrative analysis was conducted focusing on the meaning of change in repeated narratives. Results: The analysis resulted in five narrative themes: Gaining insights about one's identity, transforming views of past challenges, increasing agency, increas-ing motivation for occupational commitments, and accentuating competence and importance. In the context of occupational experiences, the results from the nar-rative themes illuminate how narrators repeatedly engage with the same narra-tive to elaborate their narrative identity. Conclusion: This study presents a novel method for capturing identity devel-opment, which show that changes in repeated narratives can entail important information about identity growth as well as the way narrators create new stories of their previous experiences in order to continue to make sense of their lives.

    • Background and Aim: The stories people tell about their present, past and future selves are highly important for identity development (McAdams, 1985; Kroger & Marcia, 2011), not least in adulthood. To maintain one’s identity as a subjective coherent sense of self, continuous over time, the identity also needs to be reworked and developed throughout life in response to new experiences (Erikson, 1968; McAdams, 2013). Therefore, identity defining narratives should entail both stability and change (Adler, 2019). The aim of this study is to examine the meaning of change in repeated narratives about occupational experiences. Method: Fifty-nine individuals were interviewed at age 25, 29 and 33. In these interviews 544 narratives and 142 sets of repeated narratives were identified, of these 39 sets of repeated narratives had changed between interviews. • Stability and Change in Repeated Narratives About Occupational Identity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Society for Research on Identity (ISRI) online conference, Tufts University, Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts, United States, June 3-4..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Narrative identity is the meaningful evolving story of the self that individuals construct and internalize in order to make sense of their lives (McAdams & McLean, 2013). The story connects the autobiographical past and the imagined future through reconstruction of memories, and serves to explain how the person came to be, and where his or her life may be going (McAdams, 2011). The identity needs to be reworked and developed throughout life in response to new experiences (Erikson, 1968; McAdams, 2013). Thus, aspects of both stability, such as continuity, and change, such as growth, are important for narrative identity. Recent research on narrative identity has started to focus more on examining repeated narration, that is, similar content that an individual repeat across different occasions, in order to more fully understand the complexity of stability and change in narratives (e.g. Adler, 2019; Dunlop, 2019; Fivush, Habermas, & Reese, 2019; McAdams, 2019; McLean, Köber & Haralssson, 2019; Pasupathi & Wainryb, 2019; Singer, 2019). The aim of this study was to examine how repeated narratives change between interview sessions conducted at three time points, four years apart, and what function the changes in repeated narratives have for individuals’ identity. A community sample of 59 young Swedish adults were interviewed at age 25, 29 and 33. The interviews focused on occupational identity (one domain of the Identity Status Interview, Marcia et al., 1993). In order to identify narratives and to determine if the narrative was repeated, we developed a codebook. Reliability coding of number of narratives per interview occasion and number of repeated events across occasions indicated good reliability (ICC = .89 for number of narratives and .82 for number of repeated narratives). The 59 participants told a total of 544 narratives across the three interview occasions and there were 141 repeated sets of narratives, that is, narratives that were repeated across two or three interview occasions. For the analysis, we used an exploratory, data-driven, case-centered approach (Adler et al., 2017; Riessman, 2008) and examined each set of repeated narratives separately for each individual. The results showed three areas of change within the repeated identity narratives: change of amount of details, change of emotional tone and change of characters with two themes under each area. Findings suggested that there was a high degree of repeated narratives across the interview occasions and that individuals change their repeated narratives in various ways, indicating how the meaning and function of the narrative had changed and become more, or less, important for their identity at present.

    • GaP < 111 > B nanowires are dominated by (111) twins orthogonal to the growth direction and show well-developed {111} side-facets. Based on this, a 3D-model has been constructed with a cross-section of an octahedron used as a building block. The twins can be of ortho- or para type i.e. by 60 degrees about the growth axis or 180 degrees in the twin plane. The segment thickness variation follows an exponential distribution with a clear dependence oil growth ternperature. Multislice simulations show different features of the twin types that are useful for further characterisation.

    • Background: Reports of freezing of gait (FoG) in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) are few and results are variable. This study's objective was to evaluate the frequency of FoG in a large cohort of iNPH patients, identify FoG-associated factors, and assess FoG’s responsiveness to shunt surgery. Methods: Videotaped standardized gait protocols with iNPH patients pre- and post-shunt surgery (n = 139; median age 75 (71–79) years; 48 women) were evaluated for FoG episodes by two observers (Cohens kappa = 0.9, p < 0.001). FoG episodes were categorized. Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and MRI white matter hyperintensities (WMH) assessment using the Fazekas scale were performed. CSF was analyzed for Beta-amyloid, Tau, and Phospho-tau. Patients with and without FoG were compared. Results: Twenty-two patients (16%) displayed FoG at baseline, decreasing to seven (8%) after CSF shunt surgery (p = 0.039). The symptom was most frequently exhibited during turning (n = 16, 73%). Patients displaying FoG were older (77.5 vs. 74.6 years; p = 0.029), had a slower walking speed (0.59 vs. 0.89 m/s; p < 0.001), a lower Tinetti POMA score (6.8 vs. 10.8; p < 0.001), lower MMSE score (21.3 vs. 24.0; p = 0.031), and longer disease duration (4.2 vs. 2.3 years; p < 0.001) compared to patients not displaying FoG. WMH or CSF biomarkers did not differ between the groups. Conclusions: FoG is occurring frequently in iNPH patients and may be considered a typical feature of iNPH. FoG in iNPH was associated with higher age, longer disease duration, worse cognitive function, and a more unstable gait. Shunt surgery seems to improve the symptom.
