  • Synthesis, EPR and DFT calculations of rare Ag(II)porphyrins and the crystal structure of [Zn(II)tetrakis(4-bromo-2-thiophene)porphyrin]
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Inorganic Chemistry Communication. - : Elsevier BV. - 1387-7003 .- 1879-0259. ; 11:9, s. 1019-1022
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Meso-tetrakis (4-bromo-2-thiophene) and (5-bromo-2-thiophene) porphyrins were synthesized in 18% yield from freshly distilled pyrrole and the corresponding aldehydes in refluxing propionic acid. Reaction of both porphyrins with either Zn(OAc) 2 · 2H 2 O or Ag(OAc) afforded the corresponding metal complexes in 20% yield. The free bases and metal complexes were characterized by IR, NMR, EPR, MS and XPS. The crystal structure of 5,10,15,20(4-bromo-2-thiophene)porphyrinato Zn(II) was determined by X-ray diffraction and shows a 'zigzag-like' packing pattern due to S···S intermolecular interaction. Structural features of these molecules are discussed by DFT quantum chemical calculations. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Atomic layer deposition of ZrO2 and HfO2 on deep trenched and planar silicon
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Microelectronic Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-9317 .- 1873-5568. ; 84:9-10, s. 2010-2013
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conformal ZrO2 and HfO2 thin films were grown by atomic layer deposition using novel liquid cyclopentadienyl precursors at 300 degrees C or 350 degrees C on planar Si wafers and deep trenched Si with an aspect ratio of 60:1. The crystal growth and phase content in as-deposited films depended on the precursor, film thickness, and the material grown. The structural and electrical behaviour of the films were somewhat precursor-dependent, revealing better insulating properties in the films grown from oxygen-containing precursors. Also the HfO2 films showed lower leakage compared to ZrO2.

  • Prediction of treatment-response to inhaled corticosteroids by mannitol-challenge test in COPD. A proof of concept
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Pulmonary Pharmacology & Therapeutics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1522-9629 .- 1094-5539. ; 18:2, s. 83-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There are no predictors known that can identify COPD patients who will respond to treatment with ICS. Method: We investigated 30 patients (median age 65 (range 44-83, 12 females) with mild to moderately severe COPD. All patients had post bronchodilator FEV1/forced vital capacity ratio of less than 70% and a reversibility of less than 12% and 200 ml from baseline. We wanted to determine if airway responsiveness (AHR) to histamine and mannitol could predict who would respond to a 3-month course of ICS. Results: At baseline, all patients had AHR to histamine, but only 7 (23%) patients to mannitol. After 3 months of treatment with ICS, there was no significant change in spirometry or the quality of life when analysing all individuals together. However, FEV1 % predicted improved from 67% (IQR12) to 79% (IQR16) in mannitol positive patients; whereas it was unchanged in the mannitol negative patients. The difference in the mean change of FEV1% predicted between the two groups was 12 (IQR13.5) and this was highly significant (p=0.001). The improvement in quality of life (SGRQ 30 (IQR10.5) to 21 (IQR12; p=0.01) was only significant in the patients positive to mannitol. Conclusion: We propose that AHR to mannitol could predict ICS-responsiveness in mild to moderately severe COPD patients.

  • Direct observation of strong momentum-dependent electron-phonon coupling in a metal
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 2375-2548. ; 10:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phonon scattering in metals is one of the most fundamental processes in materials science. However, understanding such processes has remained challenging and requires detailed information on interactions between phonons and electrons. We use an ultrafast electron diffuse scattering technique to resolve the nonequilibrium phonon dynamics in femtosecond-laser-excited tungsten in both time and momentum. We determine transient populations of phonon modes which show strong momentum dependence initiated by electron-phonon coupling. For phonons near Brillouin zone border, we observe a transient rise in their population on a timescale of approximately 1 picosecond driven by the strong electron-phonon coupling, followed by a slow decay on a timescale of approximately 8 picosecond governed by the weaker phonon-phonon relaxation process. We find that the exceptional harmonicity of tungsten is needed for isolating the two processes, resulting in long-lived nonequilibrium phonons in a pure metal. Our finding highlights that electron-phonon scattering can be the determinant factor in the phonon thermal transport of metals.

  • Hur kan alla bli delaktiga? : Digitalisering inom särskild utbildning på grundläggande nivå
  • 2021

  • Electric Sail Mission Expeditor, ESME : Software Architecture and Initial ESTCube Lunar Cubesat E-Sail Experiment Design
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Aerospace. - : MDPI AG. - 2226-4310. ; 10:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electric solar wind sail, or E-sail, is a novel deep space propulsion concept which has not been demonstrated in space yet. While the solar wind is the authentic operational environment of the electric sail, its fundamentals can be demonstrated in the ionosphere where the E-sail can be used as a plasma brake for deorbiting. Two missions to be launched in 2023, Foresail-1p and ESTCube-2, will attempt to demonstrate Coulomb drag propulsion (an umbrella term for the E-sail and plasma brake) in low Earth orbit. This paper presents the next step of bringing the E-sail to deep space—we provide the initial modelling and trajectory analysis of demonstrating the E-sail in solar wind. The preliminary analysis assumes a six-unit cubesat being inserted in the lunar orbit where it deploys several hundred meters of the E-sail tether and charges the tether at 10–20 kV. The spacecraft will experience acceleration due to the solar wind particles being deflected by the electrostatic sheath around the charged tether. The paper includes two new concepts: the software architecture of a new mission design tool, the Electric Sail Mission Expeditor (ESME), and the initial E-sail experiment design for the lunar orbit. Our solar-wind simulation places the Electric Sail Test Cube (ESTCube) lunar cubesat with the E-sail tether in average solar wind conditions and we estimate a force of (Formula presented.) N produced by the Coulomb drag on a 2 km tether charged to 20 kV. Our trajectory analysis takes the 15 kg cubesat from the lunar back to the Earth orbit in under three years assuming a 2 km long tether and 20 kV. The results of this paper are used to set scientific requirements for the conceptional ESTCube lunar nanospacecraft mission design to be published subsequently in the Special Issue “Advances in CubeSat Sails and Tethers”.

  • Human serum-derived protein removes the need for coating in defined human pluripotent stem cell culture
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reliable, scalable and time-efficient culture methods are required to fully realize the clinical and industrial applications of human pluripotent stem (hPS) cells. Here we present a completely defined, xeno-free medium that supports long-term propagation of hPS cells on uncoated tissue culture plastic. The medium consists of the Essential 8 (E8) formulation supplemented with inter-alpha-inhibitor (I alpha I), a human serum-derived protein, recently demonstrated to activate key pluripotency pathways in mouse PS cells. IaI efficiently induces attachment and long-term growth of both embryonic and induced hPS cell lines when added as a soluble protein to the medium at seeding. IaI supplementation efficiently supports adaptation of feeder-dependent hPS cells to xeno-free conditions, clonal growth as well as single-cell survival in the absence of Rho-associated kinase inhibitor (ROCKi). This time-efficient and simplified culture method paves the way for large-scale, high-throughput hPS cell culture, and will be valuable for both basic research and commercial applications.

  • Ribonucleotide reductase inhibitors suppress SAMHD1 ara-CTPase activity enhancing cytarabine efficacy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: EMBO Molecular Medicine. - : Blackwell Publishing Ltd. - 1757-4676 .- 1757-4684.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The deoxycytidine analogue cytarabine (ara-C) remains the backbone treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) as well as other haematological and lymphoid malignancies, but must be combined with other chemotherapeutics to achieve cure. Yet, the underlying mechanism dictating synergistic efficacy of combination chemotherapy remains largely unknown. The dNTPase SAMHD1, which regulates dNTP homoeostasis antagonistically to ribonucleotide reductase (RNR), limits ara-C efficacy by hydrolysing the active triphosphate metabolite ara-CTP. Here, we report that clinically used inhibitors of RNR, such as gemcitabine and hydroxyurea, overcome the SAMHD1-mediated barrier to ara-C efficacy in primary blasts and mouse models of AML, displaying SAMHD1-dependent synergy with ara-C. We present evidence that this is mediated by dNTP pool imbalances leading to allosteric reduction of SAMHD1 ara-CTPase activity. Thus, SAMHD1 constitutes a novel biomarker for combination therapies of ara-C and RNR inhibitors with immediate consequences for clinical practice to improve treatment of AML. © 2020 The Authors. • Valorization of Marine Waste : Use of Industrial By-Products and Beach Wrack Towards the Production of High Added-Value Products
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Marine Science. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-7745. ; 8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biomass is defined as organic matter from living organisms represented in all kingdoms. It is recognized to be an excellent source of proteins, polysaccharides and lipids and, as such, embodies a tailored feedstock for new products and processes to apply in green industries. The industrial processes focused on the valorization of terrestrial biomass are well established, but marine sources still represent an untapped resource. Oceans and seas occupy over 70% of the Earth's surface and are used intensively in worldwide economies through the fishery industry, as logistical routes, for mining ores and exploitation of fossil fuels, among others. All these activities produce waste. The other source of unused biomass derives from the beach wrack or washed-ashore organic material, especially in highly eutrophicated marine ecosystems. The development of high-added-value products from these side streams has been given priority in recent years due to the detection of a broad range of biopolymers, multiple nutrients and functional compounds that could find applications for human consumption or use in livestock/pet food, pharmaceutical and other industries. This review comprises a broad thematic approach in marine waste valorization, addressing the main achievements in marine biotechnology for advancing the circular economy, ranging from bioremediation applications for pollution treatment to energy and valorization for biomedical applications. It also includes a broad overview of the valorization of side streams in three selected case study areas: Norway, Scotland, and the Baltic Sea.

  • Proteogenomic analysis of acute myeloid leukemia associates relapsed disease with reprogrammed energy metabolism both in adults and children
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Leukemia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0887-6924 .- 1476-5551. ; 37:3, s. 550-559
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite improvement of current treatment strategies and novel targeted drugs, relapse and treatment resistance largely determine the outcome for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. To identify the underlying molecular characteristics, numerous studies have been aimed to decipher the genomic- and transcriptomic landscape of AML. Nevertheless, further molecular changes allowing malignant cells to escape treatment remain to be elucidated. Mass spectrometry is a powerful tool enabling detailed insights into proteomic changes that could explain AML relapse and resistance. Here, we investigated AML samples from 47 adult and 22 pediatric patients at serial time-points during disease progression using mass spectrometry-based in-depth proteomics. We show that the proteomic profile at relapse is enriched for mitochondrial ribosomal proteins and subunits of the respiratory chain complex, indicative of reprogrammed energy metabolism from diagnosis to relapse. Further, higher levels of granzymes and lower levels of the anti-inflammatory protein CR1/CD35 suggest an inflammatory signature promoting disease progression. Finally, through a proteogenomic approach, we detected novel peptides, which present a promising repertoire in the search for biomarkers and tumor-specific druggable targets. Altogether, this study highlights the importance of proteomic studies in holistic approaches to improve treatment and survival of AML patients.
