  • The performance of tradition : An ethnography of Hira Gasy popular theatre in Madagascar
  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study deals with the popular theatre performance of Hira Gasy, and its actors andaudiences in the central highland regions of Imerina and northern Betsileo in Madagascar. The Hira Gasy has developed from a court to a rural performance during the last two centuries, a period influenced by first the British and then by the French presence in the country. Today, the performances are given in diverse contexts, the most common being in connection with reburial ceremonies. The Hira Gasy troupes all have a common form of their performance, with speeches, songs, acrobatics, dance and music, while the content is unique for each troupe, although given in a culturally recognized form. The study is based on 19 months of fieldwork divided into five periods between1991 and 1996. The main argument is that the Hira Gasy performances provide a forumin which the problems of identification and belonging are discussed. The `foreigner' isused as a `mirror image' for the rural and the poor in their aims to assert and shape theirsense of belonging in a changing society. The symbols of identification - the ancestralland, the common tomb, and the family solidarity - are felt to be threatened by increasingindividualization and the decrease in the fulfillment of the ancestral duties. For the ruralpoor their feelings of marginality and powerlessness in relation to the economically andpolitically powerful urban elite are expressed in Hira Gasy. Through the practice ofcustom they sustain their moral dignity, which is one of the most important means inorder to remain malagasy. The Hira Gasy performances are indigenious arenas for existential and moral discussions, and for providing a sense of belonging in a problematic reality shaped by both the `way of the ancestors' and the `way of the foreign'.

    • Report of a two-week visit to China (10-24 Sept) in 1980, hosted by the Preparatory Committee of the Chinese Science of Science Association. At the time Chinese policy makers were interested in contemporary trends in research policy and foresight relating to priority setting in fields of science and technology. The paper describes initiatives taken to introduce what we call science and technology studies (STS) and ongoing efforts aimed at encouraging scholarly exchange with researchers in the West. Interviews were made with a number of senior scholars affiliated with the Chinese Social Sciences Academy to gain some understanding of the various changes taking place in science policy studies and the field’s relationship to policy makers at national and regional levels.

  • Metropolitan growth and migration in Peru
  • 1988
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Abstract: The study deals with the interplay between migration and metropolitan growth in Peru during the last decades. The key question is to what extent Peru's rural-urban migration and rapid urban growth is triggered by opportunities within the formal and informal sectors in the growing metropolis of Lima.Aggregated data about migration have been related to information of socioeconomic and geographical conditions in rural and urban areas. Multivariate models of interregional migration are constructed and tested. A study of the life paths of a limited group of migrants has generated hypotheses about causes of migration and the assimilation of migrants in the city.Migration is related to historical changes in Peruvian society and to structural and individual conditions affecting migrants. The historical transformation of the rural and urban sectors is one important precondition for the increasing rural-urban migration in 20th century Peru, including the declining importance of the traditional socio-economic structure (the hacienda system and the peasant communities), population growth, and the increasing importance of capitalistic forms of exchange and production as well as of interregional interaction and non-agrarian sectors.Regional disparities appear to be the most important structural condition affecting migration in Peru, in accordance with the so-called gap-theories, which indicate that changes and conditions in urban areas are more important for temporal and spatial variations in the migration pattern, than corresponding changes in rural areas. Furthermore, young and better educated individuals are overrepresented in the migrant groups and outinigration seems to be highest from rural areas with well-established urban contacts. Urban pull is more important than rural push. The study reveals that personal contacts are essential as a generator of migration, for information flows and for the migrants' adaptation to the urban society. In general, the rural-urban migration can be regarded as a rational adaptation to living conditions in rural and urban areas, since most migrants seem to have a higher living standard in the cities in comparison with their former situation in rural areas.A significant conclusion is that informal solutions are important for solving migrants' housing and subsistence problems. The informal sector is interpreted as an integrated and often dynamic element in the urban economy, rather than as an indicator of over-urbanization. The study provides empirical support for a conjecture termed metropolitan informal sector pull, in which the informal sector of Lima is a major part of the magnet that pulls people from the rural areas and generates metropolitan growth and migration in Peru.

  • De samiska metalldepåerna år 1000-1350 : i ljuset av fyndet från Mörtträsket, Lappland
  • 1984
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis arises out of a new find from Mörtträsket, Lapland, which can be compared with the eleven so called "Finds from Lapp Places of Sacrifice" from North Scandinavia, dated to c. 1000-1350. The Mörtträsket find is characterized by newly made objects and is interpreted as a tradesman's stock. The large find from Gråträsk in Norrbotten has been given a new interpretation as a thiefs hiding-place, consisting of metal objects from plundered Saami sacrificial sites. It has been possible to distinguish these two sites from ten others which must be interpreted as places of sacrifice (although some of them may be sacrificial cum habitation sites or even habitation sites only). The 259 metal artefacts from Mörtträsket can be dated to c. 1100-1350, partly throughdendrochronologically dated finds from Novgorod. The locally made pewter artefacts, especially pendants of three types, have been given a totally new dating, viz. the first half of the 14th Century. This has consequences for corresponding artefacts from Gråträsk, which up till now have been dated to the 11 th-12th Centuries. This local group of objects in the Saami metal deposits is most certainly of Saami manufacture, because of the casting method, their metallic composition and their ornamentation. New data have been derived from a number of metal analyses, concentrating on the pewter artefacts from Mörtträsket. It appears that the local artefacts have a low lead content, while the pewter artefacts from North West Europe (Germany?) have a high one. The former are here thought to be cast of English tin, imported via Norway. The good state of preservation of the pewter artefacts from Gråträsk and Mörtträsket is here considered to be due to their having been under water most of the time.A new attribution has been made: an artefact from Gråträsk is shown to be a West Finnish brooch from c. 750-800. Hence it is the oldest known eastern artefact in the Saami metal deposits. - A Gothic 14th Century silver clasp of the type that later became characteristic of Saami dress, belongs to the Mörtträsket find. This is one example of a change of function of foreign artefacts in the Saami metal deposits. The most striking examples of this phenomenon are the ring-shaped brooches in the deposits, many of which can be seen not to have been used as intended. The fact that the Saamis seem to have ceased to deposit metal artefacts on their sacrificial sites c. 1350 is here interpreted as being due to the changes resulting from the Black Death and the agrarian crisis in Norway.Som twenty other metal deposits from the period 1000-1350 in Northern Fenno-Scandia are here interpreted as Saami. These are silver hoards. Their distribution is not the same as that of the Saami metal deposits treated above. Some of the silver ones, at least, could be expressions of the custom behind the so called Odin's Law.Some characteristics of the Scandinavian and Saami Viking Age culture are still typical of the traditional Saami culture. This "culture fixation" is here interpreted as a sign that the Viking Age was a period of expansion and flourishing trade for the Saamis.

  • EvEvaluating the evaluation game : on the methodology of project evaluation, with special reference to development cooperation : SAREC Report: 1981:R1
  • 1981
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Evaluation is a social activity that is often linked to a social process of legitimization and ratiionalization on the part of entrepreneurs and agencies who have to account - either to sharehoders or govervnments - for funds invested. The report comparers and analyzes three different ways of framing (or paradigms) that inform evaluation practices relating to development aid projects in Third World countries, viz., (1) cost-benefit analysis (CBA) in various guises; (2) a Marxist inspired dependencia approach; and (3) a framing based on the notion of self-reliance. The methdologies that follow from these three different framings are exemplified with reference to their implications for handbook manuals for project evluation in the field.

  • Dis(re)membering Spaces: Swedish Modernism in Law Courts Controversy
  • 1999
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation addresses the public controversy, as reflected in newspaper coverage, over the 1936 Law Courts Annex in Göteborg, Sweden. The controversy is conceived as a tension-filled, multi-layered conjuncture of urban rivalry within the nation-state. The politico-differential pair modernism/conservatism and the spatio-differential pair Stockholm/Göteborg are traced out and shown to be formative for subject positions both in the controversy, and in scholarly work during the subsequent six decades. To disentangle the conjuncture, subjects’ spatial sense-making is contextualized with respect to a politicized built environment, and to practices characterized by polysemy, contestation and resemanticization, through which volatile meanings and identity effects are continuously renegotiated. This understanding is elaborated in relation to a notion of power as concerning asymmetries of spatial reach with regard to individuals’ influence and control over practices. From this position, the law courts controversy is unfolded through a multi-factor analysis on several spatial scales, from the nation-state to architectural solutions. It is demonstrated that in the Swedish 1930s, no building but the Law Courts Annex was executed in overt modernism on a site of key symbolico-political significance. The established projection of modernism onto Stockholm and conservatism onto Göteborg is deconstructed. The study shows how the law courts project crystallized into a unique conjuncture entangled in questions of: national and local struggles between fractions of the dominant class; governmental efforts to impose new norms and forms of dwelling and discipline; aesthetic purification and élitism; and conjoined interests of real estate capitalists, functionalist planners, and reformist politicians. The law courts controversy is shown to have been embedded in transpositions of ethics, politics, space and aesthetics. New spaces of commoditized visibility were related to the Law Courts Annex, and a gendered imagery of buildings and female human bodies as homologous were invoked together with notions of sexual and bodily hygiene. The controversy is unfolded as concerned with conditions of identity formation and subjectivity in a space of unseen visibility, and the building is unveiled as a classed and gendered space for the production of humans as mass ornaments with apractic postural models. In conclusion, established scholarly discourse on the Law Courts Annex and the controversy is unveiled as a third-order simulacrum through which the annex since the late 1930s has been produced and preserved as a counterfeit, as a historical simulacrum of the particular imagery of a discourse disconnected from existing traces of the past.

  • Ingår i: Kulturminnesvård. - Stockholm : Riksantikvarieämbetet. - 0346-9077. ; :4
