  • From the Pandemic to War: The Role of Digital Technologies in Ukrainian Businesses Responding to Discontinuities and Building Resilience
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: AMCIS 2023 Proceedings. 5.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Disasters and crises are a part of human existence. While upsetting the normal operations of societies and revealing the inherent fragility of infrastructure and social order, they also push us to rethink “the normal” way of living and working. At this moment, IS research on the experiences of businesses in times of war as an extreme crisis is very limited. Taking the case of Ukrainian businesses, we ask the following research questions: How have organizations adapted to war discontinuities and built resilience? and How have the experiences of remote work from the pandemic contributed to building organizational resilience in times of war? Analyzing semi-structured interviews with managers from Ukrainian businesses through the lenses of adaptation theory, remote work discontinuities, and capability-based model of organizational resilience, we present the types of discontinuities experienced and the adaptation strategies used by the companies in addressing them. Our findings show that the resilience of Ukrainian companies has its roots in agile management, continuous communication and collaboration, experiences in using digital technologies during the pandemic, and international community support. The results also indicate the organizations continuously coping and adapting, re-coping, and re-adapting while anticipating unexpected events, which calls for developing a more dynamic resilience model.

  • First-generation linkage map for the common frog Rana temporaria reveals sex-linkage group
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Heredity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0018-067X .- 1365-2540. ; 107:6, s. 530-536
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The common frog (Rana temporaria) has become a model species in the fields of ecology and evolutionary biology. However, lack of genomic resources has been limiting utility of this species for detailed evolutionary genetic studies. Using a set of 107 informative microsatellite markers genotyped in a large full-sib family (800 F1 offspring), we created the first linkage map for this species. This partial map-distributed over 15 linkage groups-has a total length of 1698.8 cM. In line with the fact that males are the heterogametic sex in this species and a reduction of recombination is expected, we observed a lower recombination rate in the males (map length: 1371.5 cM) as compared with females (2089.8 cM). Furthermore, three loci previously documented to be sex-linked (that is, carrying male-specific alleles) in adults from the wild mapped to the same linkage group. The linkage map described in this study is one of the densest ones available for amphibians. The discovery of a sex linkage group in Rana temporaria, as well as other regions with strongly reduced male recombination rates, should help to uncover the genetic underpinnings of the sex-determination system in this species. As the number of linkage groups found (n = 15) is quite close to the actual number of chromosomes (n = 13), the map should provide a useful resource for further evolutionary, ecological and conservation genetic work in this and other closely related species.

    • The open education system based on Information and communication technology (ICT) can provide great opportunities for people to learn regardless of resident area, language, gender, age and so on. Currently people use it actively and build up new social networks as learning communities or study groups on the Internet. Shared knowledge and the process of sharing knowledge established through online communication are considered as key elements in the context of strengthen the individual and the country. In other words, creating the open education platform and content plays a role of designing a culture and society. However, it is not easy to realize the ideal concept of “open education” because people have many differences in language, culture, political system, ideology, thought, deployment of ICT et cetera. In order to create the open education system, which has a high degree of usability and effectiveness, we need to closely examine social roles and difficulties of the ICT-based education system in designing sustainable societies. And also the ICT-based educational system is established through the continuous human-computer interaction. Therefore, all participants get involved with developing the open education and each of them assumes a responsibility for making the open educational contents more abundant.

  • Alcohol- and drug-related fatal accidents in Sweden : where do they occur?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 16th International Conference Road Safety on Four Continents. - Linköping : Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This conference paper presents an accident study investigating where fatal alcohol- and drug-related accidents occur with respect to traffic environment (i.e., urban versus rural), road type, speed limit, annual average daily traffic flow, and road category. The study uses data from in-depth studies of fatal accidents and from the Swedish National Road Database. Accident data from the 2006–2009 period are used. The results indicate that the proportion of all fatal accidents that are alcohol-related is about the same on urban (21%) and rural roads (23%). However, the proportion of alcohol-related fatal accidents is higher on ordinary roads (i.e., two-lane single carriageways with no central reservation or median barrier; 23%) than on other types of rural state roads (11%). On ordinary roads, alcohol-related fatal accidents are more common on roads with speed limits of 60–70 km/h (35%) than on roads with speed limits of 80–100 km/h (14%) and more common on second- and third-class county roads (32%) than on roads in other categories (less than 20%). The alcohol-related accident risk follows the same pattern, i.e., the accident risk is highest where the proportion of alcohol-related accidents is highest. It was also found that the distribution of drug-related fatal accidents among various parts of the road network is more similar to the distribution of fatal accidents involving sober drivers than to alcohol-related fatal accidents. The present results can be used by the police in strategic planning of the surveillance.

  • Apolipoprotein CIII in the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It has previously been shown that high levels of apolipoprotein CIII (apoCIII) are related to both type-1 (T1D) and type-2 diabetes (T2D). In this thesis, mechanisms whereby apoCIII affects diet- and genetically-induced obesity and metabolic derangements, and the role of the environment and apoCIII in the development of T1D, have been studied. In C57BL6/j (B6) mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD), preventing or reversing the increase in apoCIII with antisense oligonucleotides (ASO), resulted in the activation of lipases, and enhanced hepatic clearance and catabolism of circulating lipids. Lipid metabolism in the liver shifted towards ketogenesis and there was a reduction in de novo lipogenesis and gluconeogenesis. The ketone bodies were used for energy production in the brown adipose tissue (BAT). In white adipose tissue (WAT) there was reduced inflammation and increased expression of genes related to thermogenesis. Lowering apoCIII in HFD-fed mice promoted a normal insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis and counteracted the metabolic phenotype. Even in obese and diabetic ob/ob and db/db mice, which lack leptin signaling, lowering of apoCIII with ASO twice per week improved glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity, albeit to a lesser extent in the db/db mice. The ASO-treated mice had a reduced food intake and cessation of body weight gain. This was related to a partial recovery of hypothalamic insulin sensitivity with decreased expression of the orexigenic genes Npy and Agrp, and increased expression of the anorexigenic genes Pomc and Cart. A small-interfering RNA (siRNA) mix, consisting of two mouse-specific siRNAs against apoCIII, was tested in ob/ob mice. The metabolic improvements were comparable to those obtained when ASO was used. However, the siRNA mix was more potent and had a longer duration than ASO, so the treatment was given every second week instead of twice per week. The BioBreeding (BB) rat model, in which the diabetes-prone (DPBB) rats develop a human-like T1D when they are around 60 days old, was used to investigate the role of the environment and apoCIII in the development of T1D. Islets from DPBB or diabetes-resistant (DRBB) rats were transplanted into the anterior chamber of the eye (ACE) of 25 days-old DP or DR recipients. Five weeks after transplantation DR islets in the ACE of DP rats had a changed morphology, loss of functional vascular network, increased vascular leakage and infiltration of phagocytes, as compared to DP islets in DR recipients. This shows that a prediabetic milieu decides the fate of the islets. There was an increase in apoCIII in prediabetic islets and when DP islets were transplanted into the ACE of DP rats treated with siRNA against rat apoCIII, there was a delay in the onset of diabetes. All these data, together with previous results, support that apoCIII has a role in the development of T1D and obesity-induced T2D.

  • Developing New Measuring Technique Controlling Desalination Brine Concentration
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2015 IDA World Congress on Desalination and Water Reuse International Desalination Association-IDA.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Desalination is an important method and cost effective for producing potable water and is a rapidly growing technology worldwide. According to the International Desalination Association, IDA data base the amount of desalinated water soon will reach the 100 MCM per day, which means double of this amount (200 MCM/day) is called brine discharge or rejected amount. In this study, we planned to follow and control the huge amount of the rejected brine especially at the Gulf region which counts the most production area e.g. more than 45% of the world total amount and the largest desalination plant is also located there with more than one million cubic meter per day. The early warning system that introduces sea bottom probes (sensors) measuring desalination brine concentration can be good method to start in order to control the discharge at any location. It is great opportunity to the users that can continuously observe the changes of the concentration at the surrounding at any discharge point. For example the alarm signal works for the salt concentration increment for more than 0.5 g/l at the surrounding of any discharge point which is already existed in some places. The most important part of this plan is to establish the mobile testing instrumentation system from the above idea, which is similar to a mobile desalination plant. Such plants were developed few years ago for emergency cases and can easily sail from one location to another thereby serving many locations. Thus, we have to start mobile testing at existing desalination plants and use the mobile plants to measure and control intake and brine discharge.

  • The shape of the bacterial ribosome exit tunnel affects cotranslational protein folding
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - 2050-084X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The E. coli ribosome exit tunnel can accommodate small folded proteins, while larger ones fold outside. It remains unclear, however, to what extent the geometry of the tunnel influences protein folding. Here, using E. coli ribosomes with deletions in loops in proteins uL23 and uL24 that protrude into the tunnel, we investigate how tunnel geometry determines where proteins of different sizes fold. We find that a 29-residue zinc-finger domain normally folding close to the uL23 loop folds deeper in the tunnel in uL23 Delta loop ribosomes, while two similar to 100 residue proteins normally folding close to the uL24 loop near the tunnel exit port fold at deeper locations in uL24 Delta loop ribosomes, in good agreement with results obtained by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. This supports the idea that cotranslational folding commences once a protein domain reaches a location in the exit tunnel where there is sufficient space to house the folded structure.

  • Smartphones for Migrant Integration: A Lifeline, Bridging or Surveillance tool? Migrants’ perceptions of surveillance and social logins in mobile resources
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 27th European Conference on Information Systems, ECIS 2019: Information Systems for a Sharing Society. 10-11 June 2019, Stockholm.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is a highly digitalized society, rapidly changing into a multicultural one. Though migrants use smartphones in their migration journeys and, upon reaching host societies, for integration, i.e. learning language, culture and developing contacts with locals, there are certain potential risks in relation to surveillance. This study explores the use of mobile resources for integration purposes by newly arrived migrants in Sweden, in particular from the perspective of surveillance. Further, it aims to analyze the available mobile resources for migrant integration and how these resources are designed, with special focus on the use of social logins. Mapping of mobile resources in combination with 15 focus-group interviews with newly arrived migrants is used. The results show that the migrants are concerned about surveillance and consciously avoid using the resources in which social logins are required, preferring email as a sign-in option. The mapping of the resources shows that the majority of the resources have multiple sign-in options, including Facebook, Google and email. None has a social login as a sole sign-in, and many resources require no sign-in. Thus, the existing resources pose no apparent risk from the social media surveillance perspective for the migrants to use them. However, as in further development of resources social logins might become needed to track user progress, migrants’ concerns about surveillance should be taken into consideration.

  • Immune delineation of laryngeal papilloma reveals enhanced neutrophil associated gene profile
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Immunology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0014-2980 .- 1521-4141. ; 51:10, s. 2535-2539
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Laryngeal papilloma (LP) is a rare benign disease, caused by recurrent multisite papillomas that are referred to as recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). RRP is caused primarily by two types of human papillomavirus (HPV): HPV6 and HPV11. The immune dysregulation within the microenvironment of the lesions has been shown to likely play a role in the development of RRP. The present study aimed at analyzing the transcriptional profile of immune response genes and cancer-related genes in the LP microenvironment. We used the NanoString® nCounter® analysis system to study expression of 730 genes among seven paired samples of LP and healthy laryngeal (HL) tissue. qRT-PCR and flow cytometric analysis was performed to confirm identified transcripts and follow-up scores of infiltrating immune cells, respectively. In total, 113 differentially expressed transcripts were detected of which 37 showed increased expression levels and 76 decreased expression levels in the LP samples compared to the HL samples (fold change ≥ 2). Transcripts with increased expression levels included S100As (A7, A8, and A12), CEACAM1, neutrophil activation associated cytokines (IL8), chemokines (CXCL6), and IL receptors, e.g., IL4R. Transcripts with decreased expression in LP were associated with innate and adaptive immunity. Overall, HPV6 and 11 were present in 67% and 33% of the patients, respectively. There was a significant increase in neutrophils and a significant decrease in CD8+ T cells in LP. LP samples display an immune profile characterized by enhanced expression of neutrophilic markers and significantly reduced T cell-associated markers.

  • Demolition of a 65-year-old box-girder prestressed concrete bridge located in Northern Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: EuroStruct 2023 European Association on Quality Control of  Bridges and Structures: Digital Transformation in Sustainability. - : John Wiley & Sons. ; , s. 229-234
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new bridge was built in Kalix, northern Sweden, to replace an existing prestressed concrete box-girder bridge that had been in service for over 60 years. The old bridge had a total length of 283.6 m divided into five spans: 43.9 m, 47.0 m, 94.0 m, 47.0 m, and 43.9 m. It was constructed using the balanced cantilever method with segments having lengths of around 3.0 m. The need for replacement arose from recommendations extracted from an assessment of the old bridge's state and capacity. In addition to the construction of the new bridge, its replacement necessitated the creation and evaluation of demolition procedure for the existing bridge. This procedure had to be carefully designed to avoid damaging the new bridge and stability-related issues but also to prevent debris from falling into the Kalix River, which is part of a Natura 2000 protected area. This paper discusses various issues considered while developing the demolition strategy, including the use of bed-rock anchored tendons, intermediate support fixing at specific locations, and proper evaluation of position of the demolition equipment supported by the bridge, among others. The problem of disposing of the demolished material is also discussed.

  • Genetic association and linkage studies in colorectal cancer
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer type in the Western world. Over one million patients are diagnosed worldwide yearly. A family history of CRC is a major risk factor for CRC. The total genetic contribution to disease development is estimated to be 35%. High-risk syndromes caused by known genes such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and Lynch Syndrome (LS) explain less than 5% of that number. Recently, several genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have independently found numerous loci at which common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) modestly influence the risk of developing colorectal cancer. In total, germline mutations in known genes and moderate- and low risk variants are today suggested to explain 10-15% of the total genetic burden. Hence, predisposed genetic factor are still left to be found. The aim of paper I was to investigate if 11 published loci reported to be associated with an increased or decreased risk of colorectal cancer could be confirmed in a Swedish-based cohort. The cohort was composed of 1786 cases and 1749 controls that were genotyped and analyzed statistically. Genotype– phenotype analysis, for all 11 SNPs and sex, age of onset, family history of CRC and tumor location, was performed. Of 11 loci, 5 showed statistically significant odds ratios similar to previously published findings. Most of the remaining loci showed similar OR to previous publications. Four statistically significant genotype–phenotype associations were reported. The aim of paper II was to further study these 11 SNPs and their possible correlation with morphological features in tumors. We analyzed 15 histological features in 1572 CRC cases. Five SNPs showed statistically significant associations with morphological parameters. The parameters were poor differentiation, mucin production, decreased frequency of Crohn-like peritumoral reaction and desmoplastic response. The aim of paper III was to identify new CRC loci using a genome wide linkage analysis. We used 121 non-FAP/LS colorectal cancer families and genotyped 600 subjects using SNP array chips. No statistically significant result was found. However, suggestive linkage was found in the parametric analysis. This was observed in a recessive model for high-risk families, at locus 9q31.1 (HLOD=2.2) and for moderate-risk families, at locus Xp22.33 (LOD=2.2 and HLOD=2.5). Using families with early-onset, recessive analysis suggested one locus on 4p16.3 (LOD=2.2) and one on 17p13.2 (LOD/HLOD=2.0). Our linkage study adds support for the previously suggested region on chromosome 9 and suggests three additional loci to be involved in colorectal cancer risk. It is debated whether CRC is a single entity or two different entities, colon- and rectal cancer. Studies have recognized their molecular differences. The aim of paper IV was to identify novel colon- and rectal loci. We performed a genome wide linkage analysis using 32 colon- and 56 rectal cancer families. No LOD or HLOD score above three was observed. However, results close to three could be demonstrated. A maximum HLOD= 2.49 at locus 6p21.1-p12.1 and HLOD= 2.55 at locus 18p11.2 was observed for the colon- and rectal cancer families respectively. Exome sequencing was done, on colon and rectal patients, in these regions of interest. We report 25 variants mutated in family members on chromosome 6 and 27 variants on chromosome 18. Further studies are ongoing to elucidate the importance of these variants.

  • Investigations into Information Semantics and Ethics of Computing
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The recent development of the research field of Computing and Philosophy has triggered investigations into the theoretical foundations of computing and information. This thesis consists of two parts which are the result of studies in two areas of Philosophy of Computing (PC) and Philosophy of Information (PI) regarding the production of meaning (semantics) and the value system with applications (ethics). The first part develops a unified dual-aspect theory of information and computation, in which information is characterized as structure, and computation is the information dynamics. This enables naturalization of epistemology, based on interactive information representation and communication. In the study of systems modeling, meaning, truth and agency are discussed within the framework of the PI/PC unification. The second part of the thesis addresses the necessity of ethical judgment in rational agency illustrated by the problem of information privacy and surveillance in the networked society. The value grounds and socio-technological solutions for securing trustworthiness of computing are analyzed. Privacy issues clearly show the need for computing professionals to contribute to understanding of the technological mechanisms of Information and Communication Technology. The main original contribution of this thesis is the unified dual-aspect theory of computation/information. Semantics of information is seen as a part of the data-information-knowledge structuring, in which complex structures are self-organized by the computational processing of information. Within the unified model, complexity is a result of computational processes on informational structures. The thesis argues for the necessity of computing beyond the Turing-Church limit, motivated by natural computation, and wider by pancomputationalism and paninformationalism, seen as two complementary views of the same physical reality. Moreover, it follows that pancomputationalism does not depend on the assumption that the physical world on some basic level is digital. Contrary to many believes it is entirely compatible with dual (analogue/digital) quantum-mechanical computing.

  • The Relationship between Project Complexity and Delay : Case Study of ERP Implementation Projects in Russia
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IAMOT 2013 Proceedings. - 0981581765
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper investigates the intricate relationship between project complexity and project delay in an empirical study. The research is conducted in the context of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system implementation projects in an industrial setting, which are inherently complex and often record delays. The study has a qualitative nature and adopts an inductive approach. Nine ERP-implementation project case studies have been examined with semi-structured interviews as the main data collection method. The study contributes to the project management research field by verifying and augmenting the existing frameworks on reasons for project delay and project complexity categories as well as by describing their interplay in the ERP implementation context. The paper concludes with the discussion of the possible future lines of inquiry and managerial implications of the study, highlighting potential problematic areas and discussing possible managerial responses.

    • ISSUE ADDRESSED: The prevalence of skin cancer remains at a high level in Australia. Young female Australian beachgoers are an at-risk population of skin cancer. Research on sun-protective beliefs held by this at-risk group is limited.METHODS: Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), we conducted a formative study to understand key sun safe messages among young female beachgoers in Queensland, including an elicitation study (Phase 1; N = 21, Mage  = 24.30 years) and a two-wave questionnaire survey (Phase 2; N = 140, Mage  = 23.96 years).RESULTS: Following content analysis and regression analyses, three key beliefs were identified: "be uncomfortable and/or unstylish" (behavioural belief), "friends and peers" (normative belief) and "lack of motivation to reapply sunscreen" (control belief).CONCLUSIONS: The results highlight the influences of friends and peers on beachgoers' sun-protective behaviour for this young female adult cohort. Compared to previous findings among the general population, discrepancies in beliefs suggest interventions targeting this cohort should specifically focus on fashionable sun safe images and motivation to reapply sunscreen. SO WHAT?: Future health promotion and public education should utilise various strategies according to specific groups given the discrepancies identified in beliefs. For female beachgoers, sun safe images and motivations should be the primary foci.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Personal and interpersonal skills are an essential part of design engineers’ knowledge and skills, which students rarely feel they work with in a structured way during their education. To improve soft skills, the ideas on developing students’ personal and interpersonal skills were implemented in design- implement experience, a 15 ECTS third-year capstone project for bachelor students. Parallel to the design project, students had to identify personal or interpersonal skills that they wanted to develop during the course. Personal development was done in several stages: Identification of personal development areas (PDA), discussion of PDA in group meetings, creating a development plan, personal coach meetings, status update and a final reflection The results of this paper are based on teachers notes, written documentation and course evaluations. In the analysis, development areas were categorised using the CDIO Syllabus 2.0, where 59% was classified as Personal skills and 40% related to Interpersonal skills. The perseverance subset was the most common one identified. Other areas included lack of self-confidence, conflict mediation, creating a constructive dialogue between team members and time and resource management. Using this approach for three years and analysing the implementation, we can conclude that it has improved students’ personal and interpersonal skills. The results also highlight that students like to be challenged to change their professional conduct.

  • Accelerating Ukrainian Academic Teachers’ Professional Digital Competence in Times of War
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), TREOs. 46, Copenhagen, December 9-14..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In February 2022, hostilities broke out in Ukraine, when the world just started recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and returning to physical presence at workplaces and schools. The war has had a tremendous impact on Ukrainian Higher Education, resulting in the displacement of students and staff, evacuations and relocations of institutions, infrastructural losses and damages. The Ukrainian universities had to resume the online mode to ensure the safety of their students and staff. At this moment, research on the impact of war on the Ukrainian higher education is scarce. While the pandemic has contributed to the rapid development of digital competence of Ukrainian academic staff (Ovcharuk and Ivaniuk 2021), the development of the Ukrainian teachers’ professional digital competence in times of war has not yet been investigated. To this end, this study poses the following research question: How is the digital competence of academic teachers developed during the war? The study is guided by Mishra and Koehler's TPACK framework for technology integration in the classrooms (Mishra and Koehler 2006), addressing the development of three aspects of teacher knowledge such as technological knowledge (TK), pedagogical knowledge (PK), content knowledge (CK) and the integration of these in specific contexts. The preliminary analysis of 31semi-structured interviews with university management, teachers, and students from 11 Ukrainian universities reveals the acceleration of teachers’ professional digital competence from the beginning of the hostilities. In particular, we find the teachers developing their pedagogical knowledge (PK) in terms of becoming more flexible in classroom management, and adapting assessment forms to meet the needs of the students who experience hurdles due to lack of internet access, relocations, and bombings. The respondents also comment on teachers showing increased creativity in developing their courses and examinations. Further, formal teaching tools such as MOOCS platforms, Zoom and MS Teams are commonly combined with informal tools, such as mobile apps Telegram, Viber, and WhatsApp, which are used for sharing course materials, informing about potential risks of attacks, and abrupt course changes. The teachers who moved to the European countries mentioned further developing their Technological Knowledge (TK) in terms of learning new technologies in collaboration with European universities. The study offers insight into digital competence development in times of crisis, aiming to contribute to the fields of digital transformation, online education, and crisis management. • Core-shell Yagi-Uda nanoantenna for highly efficient and directive emission
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 929:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study radiation from hybrid Yagi-Uda nanoantennas composed of metal-dielectric core-shell nanoparticles. We show that due to the presence of two types of resonances in each particle at close frequencies the hybrid Yagi-Uda nanoantenna can operate in two different regimes. In the first regime at low frequencies it operates similarly to plasmonic and all-dielectric Yagi-Uda nanoantennas, and it is characterized with highly directive emission in a forward direction. In the second regime at higher frequencies the hybrid nanoantenna can emit with a high directivity in backward direction due to the presence of the hybrid dispersion branch with negative group velocity. Moreover by choosing the appropriate nanoantenna parameters one can achieve the operation regime when due to excitation of dark magnetic dipole modes in nanoantenna high values of directivity and Purcell factor are realized simultaneouslly in extremely narrow frequency range.

  • Perspectives of Nurses and Doulas on the Use of Information and Communication Technology in Intercultural Pediatric Care: Qualitative Pilot Study.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: JMIR pediatrics and parenting. - : JMIR Publications Inc.. - 2561-6722. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is rapidly becoming an increasingly multicultural and digitalized society. Encounters between pediatric nurses and migrant mothers, who are often primary caregivers, are impeded by language problems and cultural differences. To support mothers, doulas, who are women having the same linguistic and cultural backgrounds, serve as cultural bridges in interactions with health care professionals. In addition, information and communication technology (ICT) can potentially be used to manage interactions owing to its accessibility. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of ICT in managing communicative challenges related to language problems and cultural differences in encounters with migrant mothers from the perspectives of Swedish pediatric nurses and doulas.Deep semistructured interviews with five pediatric nurses and four doulas from a migrant-dense urban area in western Sweden were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The results showed that ICT contributes to mitigating communicative challenges in interactions by providing opportunities for nurses and migrant mothers to receive distance interpreting via telephones and to themselves interpret using language translation apps. Using images and films from the internet is especially beneficial while discussing complex and culturally sensitive issues to complement or substitute verbal messages. These findings suggest that ICT helps enable migrant mothers to play a more active role in interactions with health care professionals. This has important implications for their involvement in other areas, such as child care, language learning, and integration in Sweden. The findings of this study suggest that ICT can be a bridging tool between health care professionals and migrants. The advantages and disadvantages of translation tools should be discussed to ensure that quality communication occurs in health care interactions and that health information is accessible. This study also suggests the development of targeted multimodal digital support, including pictorial and video resources, for pediatric care services.

  • Surviving the swim : Psychosocial influences on pool owners’ safety compliance and child supervision behaviours
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Safety Science. - : Elsevier. - 0925-7535 .- 1879-1042. ; 106, s. 176-183
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Queensland, Australia drowning deaths of children under the age of 5 have increased over the last 3 years, with home swimming pools being the most common site of this tragedy. Restriction of access to pools and supervision of children using the pool are two behaviours that can prevent drowning. Pool owners who were parents or guardians of children aged under 5 years (N = 242) completed a survey regarding these behaviours. We examined the impact of owners’ risk perceptions and feelings of anticipated regret on the pool safety intention and behaviours of (1) restriction of child access and (2) supervision of children, after taking into account established psychosocial determinants of decision making conceptualised by the theory of planned behaviour (attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control). In addition, underlying beliefs (attitudinal, normative, control) were examined. While anticipated regret significantly predicted intentions for both behaviours, risk perception was not a significant predictor of intention to perform either behaviour. The established decision-making constructs of attitudes, norms, and control factors influenced intention, with intention and control factors predicting behaviour. Furthermore, the critical beliefs identified in this study, in particular the approval from close others and experts in the swimming domain, provides for a better understanding of pool safety behaviour. The findings based on psychological variables and critical beliefs can be applied to future intervention strategies aimed at decreasing the incidence of childhood drowning.

  • Decision making in Ethiopian cancer care: An explorative qualitative study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Communication in Healthcare, October 17-20..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: After a cancer diagnosis, a number of decisions are to be made by patients, relatives, and oncologists. In spite of cancer being a growing concern, little is known about decision-making in cancer care in Ethiopia. This study aims to describe and analyze decision-making strategies in cancer care consultations, with a special focus on the factors that influence oncologists,’ patients’ and family’ decision-making. Methods: The study has an exploratory mixed methods design. It was conducted at the Oncology Center of the Tikur Anbassa Hospital (TASH), Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. Our data consists of: •38 transcribed video-recorded consultations between cancer patients (38), family caregivers (30), and oncologists (11) •91 transcribed audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews with patients (54), family caregivers (21), and oncologists (16) about their experiences of decision-making in cancer care In the recorded consultations, clinically relevant decisions were identified using the Decision Identification and Classification Taxonomy for Use in Medicine (DICTUM). The interviews were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Results: Eight out of ten DICTUM categories are present in the data. The oncologists focused on gathering additional information (medical treatments, use of traditional medicine, and drinking holy water) when their patients were diagnosed outside TASH. Decisions about drugs and treatments were discussed with family caregivers (if present), responsible for covering treatment costs. Due to a limited number of beds, decisions regarding admittance (or delay in admittance) and scheduling of chemotherapy were made with both patients and caregivers. While giving advice and precautions was common, the oncologists were careful with setting treatment goals due to many patients facing a poor prognosis. Discussion/implications: Family plays an important role in decision-making in Ethiopian cancer care. We provide suggestions for communication training for staff, with a focus on decision-making for patient and family-centered care in Ethiopia.

  • Semidefinite Programming Approach to Gaussian Sequential Rate-Distortion Trade-Offs
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 0018-9286 .- 1558-2523. ; 62:4, s. 1896-1910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sequential rate-distortion (SRD) theory provides a framework for studying the fundamental trade-off between data-rate and data-quality in real-time communication systems. In this paper, we consider the SRD problem for multi-dimensional time-varying Gauss-Markov processes under mean-square distortion criteria. We first revisit the sensor-estimator separation principle, which asserts that considered SRD problem is equivalent to a joint sensor and estimator design problem in which data-rate of the sensor output is minimized while the estimator's performance satisfies the distortion criteria. We then show that the optimal joint design can be performed by semidefinite programming. A semidefinite representation of the corresponding SRD function is obtained. Implications of the obtained result in the context of zero-delay source coding theory and applications to networked control theory are also discussed.

  • Methods for the analysis and characterization of brain morphology from MRI images
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging modality that produces detailed images of the brain without using any ionizing radiation. From a structural MRI scan, it is possible to extract morphological properties of different brain regions, such as their volume and shape. These measures can both allow a better understanding of how the brain changes due to multiple factors (e.g., environmental and pathological) and contribute to the identification of new imaging biomarkers of neurological and psychiatric diseases. The overall goal of the present thesis is to advance the knowledge on how brain MRI image processing can be effectively used to analyze and characterize brain structure. The first two works presented in this thesis are animal studies that primarily aim to use MRI data for analyzing differences between groups of interest. In Paper I, MRI scans from wild and domestic rabbits were processed to identify structural brain differences between these two groups. Domestication was found to significantly reshape brain structure in terms of both regional gray matter volume and white matter integrity. In Paper II, rat brain MRI scans were used to train a brain age prediction model. This model was then tested on both controls and a group of rats that underwent long-term environmental enrichment and dietary restriction. This healthy lifestyle intervention was shown to significantly affect the predicted brain age trajectories by slowing the rats' aging process compared to controls. Furthermore, brain age predicted on young adult rats was found to have a significant effect on survival.Papers III to V are human studies that propose deep learning-based methods for segmenting brain structures that can be severely affected by neurodegeneration. In particular, Papers III and IV focus on U-Net-based 2D segmentation of the corpus callosum (CC) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. In both studies, good segmentation accuracy was obtained and a significant correlation was found between CC area and the patient's level of cognitive and physical disability. Additionally, in Paper IV, shape analysis of the segmented CC revealed a significant association between disability and both CC thickness and bending angle. Conversely, in Paper V, a novel method for automatic segmentation of the hippocampus is proposed, which consists of embedding a statistical shape prior as context information into a U-Net-based framework. The inclusion of shape information was shown to significantly improve segmentation accuracy when testing the method on a new unseen cohort (i.e., different from the one used for training). Furthermore, good performance was observed across three different diagnostic groups (healthy controls, subjects with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's patients) that were characterized by different levels of hippocampal atrophy. In summary, the studies presented in this thesis support the great value of MRI image analysis for the advancement of neuroscientific knowledge, and their contribution is mostly two-fold. First, by applying well-established processing methods on datasets that had not yet been explored in the literature, it was possible to characterize specific brain changes and disentangle relevant problems of a clinical or biological nature. Second, a technical contribution is provided by modifying and extending already-existing brain image processing methods to achieve good performance on new datasets.
