    • A project is described dealing with the measuring of TCP speed of an industrial robot and a conventional three-axis cutting machine, with the aim of continuously regulating the laser output power in proportion to the actual speed. It is shown, on the basis of realistic trials, how it is possible to achieve even surface quality resulting from laser cutting when applying the method mentioned (to A666SS). A common problem during laser processing, together with industrial robots, is the difficulty of obtaining constant speed of the robot path throughout the actual processing sequence. This is of particular significance, especially in the case of laser welding when too much power/unit length may burn holes in the workpiece. A method where one accepts that the TCP-speed can vary and control the power applied by the laser, in relation to the above speed, is decided upon. The method is based on a microcomputer system that computes the actual TCP-speed and, together with operator supplied processing parameters, controls the laser power. The microcomputer system has a lot of built-in knowledge about the cutting and welding process and can be used as a database when processing different kinds of materials.

    • Wear resistance can be improved by laser impregnation - the surface layer of a base material is melted and hard wear resistant carbide particles are injected into the melted pool. Previously, experiments were mainly performed in a vacuum chamber at a laser power of 10 kW. In this paper, results are presented of experiments carried out with 1.5 and 2.5 kW lasers at ambient atmospheric pressure. Laser impregnated layers show increased wear resistance of the order of 20-40 times for impregnated compared to untreated aluminium, and 5-20 times for impregnated compared to hardened carbon steels

    • It is a great opportunity for the Laser Research Group at the University of Lulea to participate in the development of a flexible manufacturing system including a laser welding cell, in co-operation with a small Swedish company. The laser research group have, in the progress of the system build-up, contributed with welding tests of the work-pieces, design of a flexible laser welding cell including fixture units and material handling equipment. We have also given our recommendation of the purchase of a laser-system. This paper presents the planning of this flexible laser processing cell, where the additional advantages with laser welding and flexibility are the main objectives with the installation.
