  • Approximating Linear Threshold Predicates
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science. 13th International Workshop on Approximation Algorithms for Combinatorial Optimization Problems, APPROX 2010 and 14th International Workshop on Randomization and Computation, RANDOM 2010, Barcelona, 1-3 September 2010. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 0302-9743 .- 1611-3349. - 9783642153686 ; 6302, s. 110-123
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study constraint satisfaction problems on the domain {-1,1}, where the given constraints are homogeneous linear threshold predicates. That is, predicates of the form sgn(w1 x1+⋯+wn x n ) for some positive integer weights w 1, ..., w n . Despite their simplicity, current techniques fall short of providing a classification of these predicates in terms of approximability. In fact, it is not easy to guess whether there exists a homogeneous linear threshold predicate that is approximation resistant or not. The focus of this paper is to identify and study the approximation curve of a class of threshold predicates that allow for non-trivial approximation. Arguably the simplest such predicate is the majority predicate sgn(x 1+⋯+xn ), for which we obtain an almost complete understanding of the asymptotic approximation curve, assuming the Unique Games Conjecture. Our techniques extend to a more general class of "majority-like" predicates and we obtain parallel results for them. In order to classify these predicates, we introduce the notion of Chow-robustness that might be of independent interest.

  • MPI Trace Compression Using Event Flow Graphs
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding how parallel applications behave is crucial for using high-performance computing (HPC) resources efficiently. However, the task of performance analysis is becoming increasingly difficult due to the growing complexity of scientific codes and the size of machines. Even though many tools have been developed over the past years to help in this task, current approaches either only offer an overview of the application discarding temporal information, or they generate huge trace files that are often difficult to handle. In this paper we propose the use of event flow graphs for monitoring MPI applications, a new and different approach that balances the low overhead of profiling tools with the abundance of information available from tracers. Event flow graphs are captured with very low overhead, require orders of magnitude less storage than standard trace files, and can still recover the full sequence of events in the application. We test this new approach with the NERSC-8/Trinity Benchmark suite and achieve compression ratios up to 119x.

  • The Steiner tree reoptimization problem with sharpenedtriangle inequality
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we deal with several reoptimization variants of the Steiner tree problem in graphs obeying a sharpened β-triangle inequality. A reoptimization algorithm exploits theknowledge of an optimal solution to a problem instance for finding good solutions for a locally modified instance. We show that, in graphs satisfying a sharpened triangleinequality (and even in graphs where edge-costs are restricted to the values 1 and 1∈+∈γ for an arbitrary small γ>∈0), Steiner tree reoptimization still is NP-hard for several different types of local modifications, and even APX-hard for some of them. As for theupper bounds, for some local modifications, we design linear-time (1/2∈+∈β)-approximation algorithms, and even polynomial-time approximation schemes, whereas for metric graphs (β=∈1), none of these reoptimization variants is known to permit a PTAS. As a building block for some of these algorithms, we employ a 2β-approximation algorithm for the classical Steiner tree problem on such instances, which might be of independent interest since it improves over the previously best known ratio for any β∈<∈1/2∈+∈ln (3)/4∈≈∈0.775.

  • Requirement Decomposition and Testability in Development of Safety-Critical Automotive Components
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 2ISO26262 is a recently approved standard for functional safety in road vehicles. It provides guidelines on minimization of unreasonable safety risks during development of embedded systems in road vehicles. However, the development process specified in ISO26262 involves a number of steps that will require changing traditional and well established development processes. In a transition phase, however, due to lack of tool support, the steps may be performed manually, increasing the risk for delays and increased cost. This paper describes a case study in which we have successfully worked with traceability and testability of functional safety requirements, as well as safety requirements assigned to a testing tool that automates integration and verification steps, leading to standard-compliant tool qualification. Our tool qualification method employs fault injection as a validation method to increase confidence in the tool. Our case study will help to avoid many of the new pitfalls that can arise when attempting to realize standard-compliant development.

  • An Architecture-Based Verification Technique for AADL Specifications
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quality assurance processes of software-intensive systems are an increasing challenge as the complexity of these systems dramatically increases. The use of Architecture Description Languages (ADLs) provide an important basis for evaluation. The Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) is an ADL developed for designing software intensive systems. In this paper, we propose an architecture-based verification technique covering the entire development process by adapting a combination of model-checking and model-based testing approaches to AADL specifications. The technique reveals inconsistencies of early design decisions and ensures a system's conformity with its AADL specification. The objective and criteria (test-selection) of the verification technique is derived from traditional integration testing.

  • Semi-automated annotation of phasic electromyographic activity
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent research on manual/visual identification of phasic muscle activity utilizing the phasic electromyographic metric (PEM) in human polysomnograms (PSGs) cites evidence that PEM is a potentially reliable quantitative metric to assist in distinguishing between neurodegenerative disorder populations and age-matched controls. However, visual scoring of PEM activity is time consuming-preventing feasible implementation within a clinical setting. Therefore, here we propose an assistive/semi-supervised software platform designed and tested to automatically identify and characterize PEM events in a clinical setting that will be extremely useful for sleep physicians and technicians. The proposed semi-automated approach consists of four levels: A) Signal Parsing, B) Calculation of quantitative features on candidate PEM events, C) Classification of PEM and non-PEM events using a linear classifier, and D) Post-processing/Expert feedback to correct/remove automated misclassifications of PEM and Non-PEM events. Performance evaluation of the designed software compared to manual labeling is provided for electromyographic (EMG) activity from the PSG of a control subject. Results indicate that the semi-automated approach provides an excellent benchmark that could be embedded into a clinical decision support system to detect PEM events that would be used in neurological disorder identification and treatment.

  • E-books in Swedish public libraries : policy implications
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aims of the paper are: review the situation of e-books delivery in the Swedish public libraries (as it looked at the end of 2012); identify the barriers that public libraries encounter in providing access to e-books; highlight the policy-related problems of e-book provision through public libraries. A survey was carried out in October, 2012 of all public libraries in Sweden. 291 questionnaires were issued. 185 were completed, response rate was 63.3%. The provision of an e-book service has arisen as a result of either demand or an ideological belief that the ethos of democratic values and equality of access requires libraries to offer material in all media. Librarians find the situation of e-books provision through libraries unsatisfactory: the provider of titles removes them from the catalogue without warning or explanation, there are too few titles for children and students, and access to popular titles is delayed.

  • Multivariate Network Visualization : Dagstuhl seminar #13201 Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, May 12-17, 2013, Revised Discussions
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book is the outcome of the Dagstuhl Seminar 13201 on Information Visualization - Towards Multivariate Network Visualization, held in Dagstuhl Castle, Germany in May 2013.The goal of this Dagstuhl Seminar was to bring together theoreticians and practitioners from Information Visualization, HCI, and Graph Drawing with a special focus on multivariate network visualization, i.e., on graphs where the nodes and/or edges have additional (multidimensional) attributes. The integration of multivariate data into complex networks and their visual analysis is one of the big challenges not only in visualization, but also in many application areas. Thus, in order to support discussions related to the visualization of real world data, also invited researchers from selected application areas, especially bioinformatics, social sciences, and software engineering. The unique "Dagstuhl climate" ensured an open and undisturbed atmosphere to discuss the state-of-the-art, new directions, and open challenges of multivariate network visualization.

  • Compositional Algorithmic Verification of Software Product Lines
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Software product line engineering allows large software systems to be developed and adapted for varying customer needs. The products of a software product line can be described by means of a {\em hierarchical variability model} specifying the commonalities and variabilities between the artifacts of the individual products. The number of products generated by a hierarchical model is exponential in its size, which poses a serious challenge to software product line analysis and verification. For an analysis technique to scale, the effort has to be linear in the size of the model rather than linear in the number of products it generates. Hence, efficient product line verification is only possible if {\em compositional} verification techniques are applied that allow the analysis of products to be {\em relativized}  on the properties of their variation points. In this paper, we propose simple hierarchical variability models (SHVM) with explicit variation points as a novel way to describe a set of products consisting of sets of methods. SHVMs provide a trade--off between expressiveness and a clean and simple model suitable for compositional verification. We generalize a previously developed  compositional technique and tool set for the automatic verification of control--flow based temporal safety properties to product lines defined by SHVMs, and prove soundness of the generalization. The desired property relativization is achieved by introducing variation point specifications. We evaluate the proposed technique on a number of test cases.

  • Discriminating normal from "abnormal" pregnancy cases using an automated FHR evaluation method
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electronic fetal monitoring has become the gold standard for fetal assessment both during pregnancy as well as during delivery. Even though electronic fetal monitoring has been introduced to clinical practice more than forty years ago, there is still controversy in its usefulness especially due to the high inter- and intra-observer variability. Therefore the need for a more reliable and consistent interpretation has prompted the research community to investigate and propose various automated methodologies. In this work we propose the use of an automated method for the evaluation of fetal heart rate, the main monitored signal, which is based on a data set, whose labels/annotations are determined using a mixture model of clinical annotations. The successful results of the method suggest that it could be integrated into an assistive technology during delivery.

  • Topic 11 : Multicore and Manycore Programming
  • 2012
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern multicore and manycore systems enjoy the benefits of technology scaling and promise impressive performance. However, harvesting this potential is not straightforward. While multicore and manycore processors alleviate several problems that are related to single-core processors – known as memory-, power-, or instruction-level parallelism-wall – they raise the issue of the programmability and programming effort. This topic focuses on novel solutions for multicore and manycore programmability and efficient programming in the context of generalpurpose systems.

  • Does observing artificial robotic systems influence human perceptual processing in the same way as observing humans?
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humanoid robots are designed and shaped to have physical bodies resembling humans. The anthropomorphic shape is aiming at facilitating interactions between humans and robots with the ultimate goal of making robots acceptable social partners. This attempt is not very new to roboticists and there is an increasing body of research showing the importance of robots' appearance in HRI; the Uncanny Valley proposed in the 70's [1] is however still an open problem. Our aim in this contribution is to examine how human perceptual mechanisms involved in action observation are influenced by the external shape of observed robots. Our present results show that observing robotic/cartoon hands performing grasping/pointing movements elicits similar perceptual mechanisms as observing other humans. Hence, it seems that observing actions of artificial systems can induce similar perceptual effects as observing actions of humans

  • Assessment of Universal Design Principles for Analyzing Computer Games’ Accessibility
  • 2012
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Universal design is a significant topic of interest in the research of accessibility. However, to date there are no certain verification of these principles on the accessibility issues for computer games. In this paper the existing universal design principles were verified to assess accessibility in computer games. Quantitative analysis of collected data showed that some design principles are not really optimal for assessing computer games’ accessibility while other design principles were overlooked. The findings from this study take the argument of alternation of existing universal design principles further ahead and initializes the possibilities of developing accessible games design principles.

  • Constraint Optimization Problems and Bounded Tree-width Revisited
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The valued constraint satisfaction problem (VCSP) is an optimization framework originating from artificial intelligence which generalizes the classical constraint satisfaction problem (CSP). In this paper, we are interested in structural properties that can make problems from the VCSP framework, as well as other CSP variants, solvable to optimality in polynomial time. So far, the largest structural class that is known to be polynomial-time solvable to optimality is the class of bounded hypertree width instances introduced by Gottlob et al. Here, larger classes of tractable instances are singled out by using dynamic programming and structural decompositions based on a hypergraph invariant proposed by Grohe and Marx. In the second part of the paper, we take a different view on our optimization problems; instead of considering fixed arbitrary values for some structural invariant of the (hyper)graph structure of the constraints, we consider the problems parameterized by the tree-width of primal, dual, and incidence graphs, combined with several other basic parameters such as domain size and arity. Such parameterizations of plain CSPs have been studied by Samer and Szeider. Here, we extend their framework to encompass our optimization problems, by coupling it with further non-trivial machinery and new reductions. By doing so, we are able to determine numerous combinations of the considered parameters that make our optimization problems admit fixed-parameter algorithms.

  • Counting Homomorphisms via Hypergraph-based Structural Restrictions
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The way in which the graph structure of the constraints influences the computational complexity of counting constraint satisfaction problems (#CSPs) is well understood for constraints of bounded arity. The situation is less clear if there is no bound on the arities. Here we initiate the systematic study of these problems and identify new classes of polynomial time solvable instances based on dynamic programming over tree decompositions, in a way generalizing well-known approaches to combinatorial optimization problems on bounded treewidth graphs, but basing the decompositions on various hypergraph width measures from the literature on plain CSPs.
