  • A Principled Approach to Tracking Information Flow in the Presence of Libraries
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783662544549 ; 10204, s. 49-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been encouraging progress on information flow control for programs in increasingly complex programming languages, tracking the propagation of information from input sources to output sinks. Yet, programs are typically deployed in an environment with rich APIs and powerful libraries, posing challenges for information flow control when the code for these APIs and libraries is either unavailable or written in a different language. This paper presents a principled approach to tracking information flow in the presence of libraries. With the goal to strike the balance between security and precision, we present a framework that explores the middle ground between the “shallow”, signature-based modeling of libraries and the “deep”, stateful approach, where library models need to be supplied manually. We formalize our approach for a core language, extend it with lists and higher-order functions, and establish soundness results with respect to the security condition of noninterference.

  • 2016 Workshop on Exascale Multi/Many Core Computing Systems (E-MuCoCoS)
  • 2016
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exascale computing will revolutionize computational science and engineering by providing 1000x the capabilities of currently available computing systems, while having a similar power footprint. The HPC community is working towards the development of the first Exaflop computer after reaching the Petaflop milestone in 2008. There are concerns that computer designs based on existing multi-core and many-core solutions will not scale to Exascale considering technical challenges (such as, productivity, energy consumption or reliability) and reasonable economic constraints. Therefore, novel multi-core and many-core solutions are required to reach Exascale. The E-MuCoCoS workshop series focuses on multi/many core languages, system software and architectural solutions for extreme-scale systems towards Exascale.

  • Barriers to Adopting E-commerce in Chinese Rural Areas : A Case Study
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although e-commerce has been adopted and developed rapidly in rural areas in China during the past two years, serious issues have been encountered as well. Practitioners and scientists proposed lists of barriers. However, such lists differ with each other for different regions and at different time. Fixed lists may not help much practically. Present research proposes a framework named N3F4 to structure and formalize such barriers. Based on the framework, researchers could make a list of barriers for a given region, perform surveys among interested people, prioritize the barriers, analyze reasons and propose solutions. In this paper, we introduce the N3F4 framework, and present a case study of applying the framework in one small county in China. The result shows that the N3F4 framework helps structure barriers before performing the survey, and it also helps analyze the result and come up with solutions afterwards, both effectively and efficiently.

  • Ontology Learning from Software Requirements Specification
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Learning ontologies from software requirements specifications with individuals and relations between individuals to represent detailed information, such as input, condition and expected result of a requirement, is a difficult task. System specification ontologies (SSOs) can be developed from software requirement specifications to represent requirements and can be used to automate some time-consuming activities in software development processes. However, manually developing SSOs to represent requirements and domain knowledge of a software system is a time-consuming and a challenging task. The focus of this PhD is how to create ontologies semi-automatically from SRS. We will develop a framework that can be a possible solution to create semi-automatically ontologies from SRS. The developed framework will mainly be evaluated by using the constructed ontologies in the software testing process and automating a part of it. i.e. test case generation.

  • Unsupervised Learning from Motion Sensor Data to Assess the Condition of Patients with Parkinson’s Disease
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: AIME 2019. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030216429 - 9783030216412 ; , s. 420-424
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that predominantly affects the patient’s motor system, resulting in muscle rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor, and postural instability. As the disease slowly progresses, the symptoms worsen, and regular monitoring is required to adjust the treatment accordingly. The objective evaluation of the patient’s condition is sometimes rather difficult and automated systems based on various sensors could be helpful to the physicians. The data in this paper come from a clinical study of 19 advanced PD patients with motor fluctuations. The measurements used come from the motion sensors the patients wore during the study. The paper presents an unsupervised learning approach applied on this data with the aim of checking whether sensor data alone can indicate the patient’s motor state. The rationale for the unsupervised approach is that there was significant inter-physician disagreement on the patient’s condition (target value for supervised machine learning). The input to clustering came from sensor data alone. The resulting clusters were matched against the physicians’ estimates showing relatively good agreement.

  • Metrics for the evaluation of feature models in an industrial context : A case study at opel
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • [Context & motivation] Feature models are used in product line engineering to document possible product configurations on the feature level. [Problem] In order to quantify the success of adopting feature modeling in practice, we need to understand the industry relevant metrics for feature model evaluation. [Solution] In order to identify the metrics a Goal-Question-Metric approach was used in the context of a case study conducted at Adam Opel AG. [Contribution:] We identified seven goals (quality criteria) we should strive for and evaluate when using feature models. Furthermore, we identified 18 sub-goals, 27 questions and corresponding metrics. The metrics were used to reflect on the feature modeling conducted at the company. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

  • Assurance Benefits of ISO 26262 Compliant Microcontrollers for Safety-Critical Avionics
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The usage of complex Microcontroller Units (MCUs) in avionics systems constitutes a challenge in assuring their safety. They are not always developed according to the assurance requirements accepted by the aerospace industry. These Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware components usually target other domains like the telecommunication branch, because of the volume of sales and reduced liability. In the last years MCUs developed in compliance to the ISO 26262 have been released on the market for safety-related automotive applications. The avionics market could profit taking credit for some of the activities conducted in developing these MCUs. In this paper we present evaluation results based on comparing assurance activities from ISO 26262 that could be considered for compliance to relevant assurance guidance for COTS MCU in avionics.

  • Novel Software-based Method to Widen Dynamic Range of CCD Sensor Images
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past twenty years, CCD sensor has made huge progress in improving resolution and low-light performance by hardware. However due to physical limits of the sensor design and fabrication, fill factor has become the bottle neck for improving quantum efficiency of CCD sensor to widen dynamic range of images. In this paper we propose a novel software-based method to widen dynamic range, by virtual increase of fill factor achieved by a resampling process. The CCD images are rearranged to a new grid of virtual pixels com-posed by subpixels. A statistical framework consisting of local learning model and Bayesian inference is used to estimate new subpixel intensity. By knowing the different fill factors, CCD images were obtained. Then new resampled images were computed, and compared to the respective CCD and optical image. The results show that the proposed method is possible to widen significantly the recordable dynamic range of CCD images and increase fill factor to 100 % virtually.

  • Using care professionals as proxies in the design process of welfare technology – Perspectives from municipality care
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bringing real users into the design process is often seen as a successful way of creating useful IT systems. However, when it comes to designing for elderly, this is not always possible since many elderly suffer from age-related decline, both with respect to physical and cognitive abilities. This paper elaborates on the approach of working with proxies, in this case elderly care personnel. Different groups of people (N = 117) working with elderly and well familiar with needs and contexts around elderly were engaged in this study. Using a questionnaire and a more in-depth workshop we explored with municipality care professionals their experiences as well as the need to create a framework to improve such a proxy approach, and whether a method using care professionals as mediators could be possible to establish in elderly care. The results described in this paper are complementary to ours and others previous knowledge and show promising commitment and willingness to work in accordance with the proposed method.

  • Data Mining and Constraint Programming : Foundations of a Cross-Disciplinary Approach
  • 2016
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A successful integration of constraint programming and data mining has the potential to lead to a new ICT paradigm with far reaching implications. It could change the face of data mining and machine learning, as well as constraint programming technology. It would not only allow one to use data mining techniques in constraint programming to identify and update constraints and optimization criteria, but also to employ constraints and criteria in data mining and machine learning in order to discover models compatible with prior knowledge. This book reports on some key results obtained on this integrated and cross- disciplinary approach within the European FP7 FET Open project no. 284715 on “Inductive Constraint Programming” and a number of associated workshops and Dagstuhl seminars. The book is structured in five parts: background; learning to model; learning to solve; constraint programming for data mining; and showcases.

  • Volumetric Breast-Density Measurement Using Spectral Photon-Counting Tomosynthesis : First Clinical Results
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements of breast density have the potential to improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of screening mammography through personalized screening. Breast density has traditionally been evaluated from the dense area in a mammogram, but volumetric assessment methods, which measure the volumetric fraction of fibro-glandular tissue in the breast, are potentially more consistent and physically sound. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate a method for measuring the volumetric breast density using photon-counting spectral tomosynthesis. The performance of the method was evaluated using phantom measurements and clinical data from a small population (n=18). The precision was determined to 2.4 percentage points (pp) of volumetric breast density. Strong correlations were observed between contralateral (R2=0.95) and ipsilateral () breast-density measurements. The measured breast density was anti-correlated to breast thickness, as expected, and exhibited a skewed distribution in the range [3.7%, 55%] and with a median of 18%. We conclude that the method yields promising results that are consistent with expectations. The relatively high precision of the method may enable novel applications such as treatment monitoring.

  • Delone and McLean IS success model for evaluating knowledge sharing
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is generally agreed upon that Knowledge Sharing (KS) is an effective process within organizational settings. It is also the corner-stone of many firm’s Knowledge Management (KM) Strategy. Despite the growing significance of KS for organization’s competitiveness and performance, analyzing the level of KS make it difficult for KM to achieve the optimum level of KS. Because of these causes, this study attempts to develop a conceptual model based on one of the IS Theories that is determined as the best model for evaluating the level of KS. In other words, it is Delone and McLean IS Success model that is presented according to the Communication Theory and it covers various perspectives of assessing Information Systems (IS). Hence, these dimensions cause it to be a multidimensional measuring model that could be a suitable model for realizing the level of KS.

  • Firefly algorithm with proportional adjustment strategy
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Firefly algorithm is a new heuristic intelligent optimization algorithm and has excellent performance in many optimization problems. However, in the face of some multimodal and high-dimensional problems, the algorithm is easy to fall into the local optimum. In order to avoid this phenomenon, this paper proposed an improved firefly algorithm with proportional adjustment strategy for alpha and beta. Thirteen well-known benchmark functions are used to verify the performance of our proposed algorithm, the computational results show that our proposed algorithm is more efficient than many other FA algorithms.
