- This study is intended as a contribution to the ongoing US and European debate on housing inequality and homelessness. We do this by focusing on the problems faced by the "precariously housed", or people repeatedly threatened with eviction, in the advanced welfare state of Sweden. Our empirical analysis is based on a sample of individuals repeatedly threatened with evictin in Sweden in the period 1982-1986. Using proportional hazard regressions, we show that the increase in risk for a new eviction threat for these individuals can best be explained by a combination of unfavorable social circumstances and difficult personal problems, both of which need to be addressed by housing policy.

- One of the most debated elements of the Social Democratic reform of the Swedish tax system was the lowered income tax rate, which mainly affected the upper tax brackets. An analysis of public attitudes to the tax reform during three time periods reveals that attitudinal patterns are characterized by stability, both on aggregate and individual levels, and by profound social divisions. Support is more prevalent among more affluent social strata and those affiliated with Bourgeoisie parties compared to workers, low-income earners and those with left-wing preferences. Following attitudinal developments in the aftermath of the tax reform, social conflicts - mainly structured along class dimensions - as well as demands for tax progression tended to increase between 1991 and 1996.

Employment commitment and psychological well-being among unemployed men and women

- This paper studies employment commitment and psychological well-being among a random sample of 3 500 unemployed men and women in Sweden. The study observes which factors govern the level of employment commitment and if there are any significant differences between unemployed men and women in this respect. The article also discusses the importance of commitment to employment when analysing psychological well-being among unemployed. The results emphasise the psychosocial value of the former job, the activity level as unemployed and age when studying employment commitment among both men and women. However, the results also indicate that age and family situation affect unemployed women�s and men�s levels of commitment to paid employment in different ways. Further, both unemployed men and women with a strong non-financial employment motivation have a significantly higher risk of experiencing poor mental well-being than those with lower commitment to employment. In conclusion, the results from this study speak against the hypothesis that the high unemployment rates among certain categories of people are mainly a result of low motivation to be employed.

- In this article, we focus on the construction of and controversy surrounding child sexual abuse as a social problem in the Swedish context. Using concepts and approaches from the field of science studies, we investigate how the problem has been introduced to the public and by whom. We identify what we call a knowledge-based controversy. The frequency of child sexual abuse, the methods of diagnosing it, and the role of the investigator are highly disputed. It would appear that clinical child psychologists are especially engaged in this problem construction as well as in controversy with other professionals. Different strategies are chosen in order to increase professional legitimacy, and exclude others' claims to expertise on the subject. Our conclusion is that at present there is no indication that psychologists have reached a more comprehensive experience and/or unified knowledge of child sexual abuse than any competing professional group dealing with the issue.

- Departing from the notion of 'the stranger' in classical sociological literature (Alfred Schutz and Georg Simmel), the paper discusses the significance of two paradigmatic approaches, one of which has discursively branched off into modernity. In a world where the search for roots has become widespread - from the new social movements to the building of new nation-state, from identity politics to national identities - the multiple expression of exclusion has spread. A new kind of European citizen, a 'stranger', is being constructed. I argue that scientific discourses related to the intellectual heritage of Alfred Schutz have helped to create the 'stranger' and the 'non-stranger'. It is further argued that Simmel's approach is an alternative well worth highlighting.

- The relation between the œuvres of Jurgen Habermas and Michel Foucault constitutes an important reference point to several aspects of contemporary social research and philosophical discussion. In this paper I give an account of Habermas's critique of Foucault, a critique which operates on three levels-methodology, empirical descriptions, and political implications. I also make some commentaries on the critique, where I propose that Habermas and Foucault work within different ensembles of theories, concepts and discourses. This means, consequently, that on several occasions Habermas's critique is confusing and misses the point.
