  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk Tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 143:1-2, s. 25-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the first finding of the antlion Distoleon tetragrammicus (Fabricius, 1798) fromSweden. Several adults of the species have been collected or photographed on the island ofGotland in the Baltic Sea, between 2017 and 2021. The first finding is from Tofta skjutfält,a sandy military training ground vegetated with pines and mixed forests on the west coastof Gotland. Based on multi-year observations at the same locality as well as video recordingof an egglaying female it is clearly a resident population, even though larvae are yet to bedocumented. Distoleon tetragrammicus is not previously known from any of the Nordic orBaltic countries. The species is common in southern Europe with a wide distribution acrosswest palearctic and becomes rarer towards central Europe. The closest known locality isan outpost population on the Hel peninsula on the Polish Baltic coast which we speculateis the most probable source, 240km south of Gotland across the Baltic sea. Previously butthree species of antlions were known from the Nordic-Baltic countries, all belonging to thetypical pitfall trap-building tribe Myrmeleontini and subfamily Myrmeleontinae: Myrmeleonformicarius (Linnaeus, 1767), Myrmeleon bore (Tjeder, 1941) and Euroleon nostras (Geoffroyin Fourcroy, 1785). Distoleon tetragrammicus belongs to subfamily Nemoleontinae (tribeNemoleontini) with larvae being ambush predators without the behaviour of building pitfalltraps. We provide an identification key, as well as studio and field photographs of all fourNordic species. The quality and conservation value of Tofta military training ground localityfor insects is discussed with reference to other rare species.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk Tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 141:4, s. 161-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the first finding of the grasshopper Aiolopus thalassinus (Fabricius, 1781) inthe Nordic countries. Two migrating individuals were attracted to light at a known hotspotof migrating moths near the southernmost tip of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, 8th of August2020. End of September hundreds of individuals had made landfall in a bay not far from thefirst locality. The mass occurrence followed after days of easterly or southeasterly winds,a strengthened high pressure over Russia, and an early morning with low-lying clouds.Aiolopus thalassinus is a long-winged grasshopper with strong flight capacity and a widedistribution across the Old World. It also shares some of the density-dependent behavioraland physiological characteristics of the migratory locusts. In Europe the northern continuousdistribution limit stretches through south Germany and middle Poland. The findings onGotland follow the first record in Lithuania, 2019, and a recent trend of expanding rangein south Germany which indicates a species expanding its distribution due to a changingclimate. The findings also show that this is a species capable of swarm migration and crossinga minimum of 170 km of open sea when winds are favorable.

  • Svenska skalbaggar 3 – släktet Clambus
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 143:4, s. 165-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a result of a careful examination of the available Swedish material of the genus Clambus Fischer von Waldheim,1821 (Coleoptera: Clambidae), our current understanding of the Swedish Clambus fauna is revised. A total of 1844 specimens were identified from museum specimens as well as private collections, resulting in eight species belonging to the Swedish fauna. In the past there was confusion about the identity of Clambus minutus (Sturm, 1807), and its distribution data were later on incorrectly transferred to Clambus nigrellus Reitter, 1914. This is now resolved and the corrected distribution for C. nigrellus is presented herein, making it clear that this is a species with very few Swedish records. Another species for which there was a lot of confusion is Clambus gibbulus (LeConte, 1850). A number of previously identified records were incorrect and this species actually has very few old records, but it has recently been collected using window traps in burnt forests. Clambus pallidulus Reitter, 1911 and Clambus lohsei Meybohm, 2004 are recent newcomers into Sweden and they are now for the first time added to the Swedish fauna. Updated distributions of all of the Swedish species are provided and an illustrated determination key is included.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 143:1-2, s. 17-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hoplothrips caespitis (Uzel, 1895) and Megalothrips bonannii Uzel, 1895 were recorded for the first time in Sweden, and the species are also new to Scandinavia. The species were found in Scania (Skåne) in the southernmost part of Sweden in dry grassland habitat and close to a small river. Two additional species Aeolothrips astutus Priesner, 1926 and Odontothrips biuncus John, 1921 are new to the province of Scania. Notes on biology, host plants and distribution in Sweden and Europe are given.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 143:1-2, s. 47-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wetland area has decreased dramatically compared with preindustrial times, and in manyagricultural areas almost all wetlands have been drained to gain cropland. The trend hasin recent years been reversed because society has realized the many benefits of wetlandfunctions, such as for nutrient retention and flood control. In this study we inventoried 75 wetlands in Uppland and Halland for insects and spiders with Malaise traps, pitfall traps andsuction sampling. Most included wetlands are constructed, because the main purpose was toexamine if these wetlands also can be good for arthropod diversity, but we also included somemore natural wetlands as comparison. In total, we identified more than 25,000 individualsof more than 900 species of Coleoptera, Araneae, Diptera and Heteroptera. We found onenew species for Sweden, Hilara manicata Meigen 1822, and 37 new regional records. Alarge number of species found are considered threatened or else rare. Some wetlands closeto Mälaren were particularly interesting, with three species (Hypsosinga heri (Hahn 1831),Rhaphium antennatum (Charlier 1835) and Bagous robustus Brisout de Barneville 1863)that have no records nearby during recent times. These and other species found in the studyshow that constructed wetlands can provide good habitats for arthropod biodiversity andrare species, particularly if wetland shores are grazed and trampled by cattle.

  • Första fynden av barkborren Xyleborus dryographus (Ratzeburg, 1837) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) i Sverige
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 144, s. 21-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2020 and 2021, the first findings in Sweden of Xyleborus dryographus (Ratzeburg, 1837) were made in the province of Blekinge in South-Eastern Sweden. In 2020, two specimens were caught in interception traps baited with pheromone, primarily placed out to catch Platypus cylindrus in oak stands. In 2021, two specimens were caught in a pitfall trap near oak logs placed out to support populations of Lucanus cervus. The distance between the most distant localities is 2,4 km. The findings indicate that X. dryographus is now establishedin Sweden. The number of known bark beetle species (Scolytinae) in Sweden is now 94.

  • An interactive key to the European genera of Campopleginae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) and 20 new species for Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk Tidskrift. - Björnlunda, Sweden. - 0013-886X. ; 143, s. 121-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Darwin wasps of the subfamily Campopleginae are among the most poorly studied insect groups, which is to a large part due to inadequate identification tools. The currently 835 European species are classified into 42 genera, some of a somewhat unclear delimitation, and are very hard to identify using the incomplete, scattered and often poorly illustrated literature. We here assess different character systems for genus identification and provide an interactive, dynamic online key to the European genera. We apply this key to identify 3,500 specimens of the Swedish Malaise Trap Project to genus level. We then chose ten comparatively small genera for species-level identification, reporting a total of 37 species, 20 of which are new records for Sweden. The large number of species only found in a single trap location indicates that a lot remains to be discovered, even in an otherwise well-known fauna such as Sweden’s.

  • Noctua tertia Mentzer, Moberg & Fibiger, 1991 funnen i Sverige (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk Tidskrift. - : Sveriges Entomologiska Förening. - 0013-886X. ; 141:1-2, s. 51-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Noctu tertia was introduced as a new species for Northern Europe in the annual review of Macrolepidoptera records from Sweden 2017 (Palmqvist 2018). The current article describes the observations and studies underlying this report. An immigration of presumed Noctua janthina females with non-typical characteristics reaching Gotland during late September 2015 aroused our interest and triggered a more thorough investigation. Examination of their genitalia revealed that several of the captured specimens exhibited characteristics that were identical to those of Noctua tertia. We then extended our studies to a larger material including females with a wide range of variations in wing pattern and coloration and of males with typical janthina/tertia appearance. In total we have identified eleven Noctua tertia four males and seven females, most of them from Gotland but also three from Skåne. The oldest specimen was from 1988 and the newest from 2017. Available information of the geographical distribution of N. tertia is reviewed and the characteristics and biological information of the species in the Noctua janthe/janthina/tertia complex is further developed and discussed.

  • Svenska skalbaggar 1.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 142:1-2, s. 71-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies of beetle specimens deposited in collections have revealed five species new to the Swedish fauna to be hiding amongst their closely related species. In some cases, the species known to the Swedish fauna are widespread and considered common, making it easy to overlook the slight differences that separate them from the similar and less common species. Some of these species are restricted to a specific host plant or habitat, making ecological notes valuable for identification. The following species are presented: Sericus brunneus (Linnaeus, 1758) and S. sulcipennis Buysson, 1893 (Elateridae); Tetrops praeustus (Linnaeus, 1758) and T. gilvipes (Faldermann, 1837) (Cerambycidae); Trachys troglodytes Gyllenhal, 1817 and T. compressus Abeille, 1891 (Buprestidae); Meligethes subaeneus Sturm, 1845 and M. cardaminicola Audisio & Cline, 2015 (Nitidulidae); and Stenichnus collaris (Müller & Kunze, 1822) (Staphylinidae; Scydmaeninae), which has been shown to consist of two very similar species. Each species pair is described including the information on known distribution in Sweden and a key to species.

  • Ingår i: Entomologisk tidskrift. - 0013-886X. ; 141, s. 129-148

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk Tidskrift. - : Sveriges Entomologiska Förening. - 0013-886X. ; 141:1-2, s. 65-80

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk Tidskrift. - Björnlunda : Sveriges Entomologiska Förening. - 0013-886X. ; 142:1-2, s. 95-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is the 48th annual report of new and interesting finds of Macrolepidoptera in Sweden with a compilation of new provincial records. This season was warm compared with what was previously average in Sweden, except for the north-easternmost parts of the country and some areas in the Swedish mountains, which partly experienced cool and wet weather. However, the summer temperatures were much less extreme than in 2018, with some cool spells as well. The presence of Gazoryctra ganna as a native species was confirmed by additional observations on the same site as in previous year, plus the discovery of new location further north in the Torne valley. A large number of species continues to expand northwards and inlands like Idaea emarginata, Apeira syringaria, Cryphia algae, Apameaepomidion, Cirrhia ocellaris, Atethmia centrago, Agrotis puta, Apamea scolopacina; and some also are rounding the Gulf of Bothnia from the east like Globia sparganii and Noctua comes. Many migrant species were found in periods with S-SE winds like Agriusconvolvuli, Acherontia atropos, Macroglossum stellatarum, Hyles euphorbiae, Orthonamaobstipata, Hypena lividalis, Eublemma purpurina, Heliothis peltigera, Heliothis adaucta, Heli-coverpa armigera, Spodoptera exigua, Fabula zollikoferi, Mythimna vitellina, Agrotisbigramma, Xestia ditrapezium and Nycteola asiatica. The globally widespread moth Utetheisapulchella was recorded for the first time in Sweden on the Baltic islands Öland and Gotland. The butterfly Melitaea britomartis (CR) could not be rediscovered for the second year and must now be considered as extinct in Sweden. In addition, the butterfly Plebejus argyrognomon(EN) was not found this year and appears to have gone extinct. Both these butterfly specieshave almost unique subspecies in Sweden which makes this loss very serious.

  • Ingår i: Entomologisk Tidskrift. - Björnlunda : Sveriges Entomologiska Förening. - 0013-886X. ; 143:1-2, s. 67-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is the 49th consecutive annual report of new and interesting finds of Macrolepidopterain Sweden including a compilation of new provincial records, most of the new records are retrieved from the Swedish Species Observation System https://www.artportalen.se. The trend with warmer climate and thus longer vegetation periods continues to have a strong impact on faunal changes and the distribution of the Swedish Lepidopteran fauna. New species, mainly from south and east find their way almost yearly to our country. In 2021 three new species were observed for the first time in Sweden: Amata phegea, Mormo maura and Xylomoia graminea. The trend with expansion mainly northwards and inlands is still strong among species like: Zygaena minos, Pararge aegeria, Apatura ilia, Araschnia levana, Idaea ochrata, Mesoleuca albicillata, Hydrelia sylvata, Melanthia procellata, Eupithecia abbreviata, Cucullia scrophulariae, Cryphia algae, Hoplodrina ambigua, Atethmia centrago, Conisania luteago, Noctua interposita, Epilecta linogrisea, Meganola albula but also among many other species. A new and remarkable feature in the new climatic conditions is that species like Pararge aegeria, Watsonalla binaria and many others can produce full or partial second or even third generations in their just recently reached northernmost range limits. An impressive number of migrants found their way to Sweden, mostly from August to October. Among the more noteworthy are: Argynnis laodice, Acherontia atropos, Scopulani gropunctata, Orthonama obstipata, Horisme corticata, Narraga fasciolaria, Isturgia arenacearia, Rhyparia purpurata, Catocala elocata, Catocala electa, Chrysodeixis chalcites, Heliothis adaucta, Helicoverpa armigera, Caradrina kadenii, Mythimna vitellina, Peridromasaucium, Agrotis bigramma, Xestia ditrapezium, Nycteola asiatica. In northernmost Sweden Gazoryctra ganna was found for the third successive year, showing that the moth is resident in Sweden and presumably has been so during all the year it was not found. Also, one new, small population of Lycaena helle was found indicating that the species still lingers on 3-4 localities in Northernmost Sweden. In Skåne in southernmost Sweden the moths Lithostege farinata, Hadena filograna have been observed again after many years absence. They have been considered as nationally respectively regionally extinct, but hopefully new influx or some concealed unknown population may rescue the species survival in Skåne again. The number of macrolepidoptera found in Sweden is now 1130, of which 16 are introduced.

  • The Hymenoptera collection of Lars Huggert housed in the Swedish Museum of Natural History
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Entomologisk Tidskrift. - Mörarp. - 0013-886X. ; 142:4, s. 207-220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the autumn of 2006 the large insect collection of Lars Huggert (1942–2003) was kindly donated to the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm by the siblings of the collector. A first assessment of the size of the collection, estimated more than 30 000 specimens of Coleoptera, 23 000 specimens of Hymenoptera and about 2 000 specimens of Diptera. Here an inventory of the Hymenoptera part of the Lars Huggert donation is given including an account of type specimens of 32 taxa described by Huggert and currently housed in NHRS. Specimens of more than 1 330 species of Hymenoptera were included in the donation which enriched the existing NHRS collections immensely. Huggert described 80 species and 34 genera/subgenera in the families Diapriidae Haliday, 1833, Platygastridae Haliday, 1833, Scelionidae, Haliday 1839 and Pteromalidae Dalman, 1820 and these families are particularly well-represented in the donation.
