  • Financial markets, the pattern of industrial specialization and comparative advantage: Evidence from OECD countries
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier: 24 months. - 0014-2921 .- 1873-572X. ; 49:1, s. 113-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to underlying technological and organizational differences, industries differ in their need for external finance. Since services provided by the financial sector are largely immobile across countries, the pattern of industrial specialization should be influenced by the level of financial development. Among OECD countries we find a strong causal effect of the financial sector on industrial specialization. Further, the financial sector is a source of comparative advantage in a way consistent with the Hecksher–Ohlin–Vanek model. Results are also presented on which aspects of financial systems are important for specialization and comparative advantage.

  • A collaborative research effort to bridge boundaries and support deviant youths in contemporary welfare systems.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 2:1, s. 88-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the challenges of introducing new approaches to the care of deviant youths in contemporary welfare systems. The specific study of early intervention programs within the area of psychosocial disturbances will be used to explore the interplay between emerging research results and the introduction of new approaches in different functionally specialized welfare carrying organizations. This paper is based on a collaborative research effort between researchers from education, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, economics and business administration and key actors from schools, police, criminal care, social security administrations, municipal health care and municipal politicians and administrative managers. The paper demonstrates that successful introduction of new coping strategies necessitates significant efforts to support the bridging of boundaries, the challenging of legacies and the learning from evidence to change established structures.

  • Growth effects of government expenditure and taxation in rich countries : A comment
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-2921 .- 1873-572X. ; 50:1, s. 211-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fölster and Henrekson (European Economic Review 45 (2001), 1501–1520) argue that “...the more the econometric problems that are addressed, the more robust the relationship between government size and economic growth appears”. But in failing to control for simultaneity and in ignoring issues of sample-selection bias, the regressions reported by Fölster/Henrekson are flawed. Using theoretically valid instruments, we find that the estimated partial correlation between size of the public sector and economic growth is statistically insignificant and highly unstable across specifications. Moreover, since instruments are weak, all hypothesis tests are unreliable. We conclude that cross-country growth regressions are unlikely to come up with a reliable answer to the question of the growth effects of government spending and taxation.

  • Relative wages and trade-induced changes in technology
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier B.V. - 1873-572X .- 0014-2921. ; 49:6, s. 1637-1663
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We develop a model where trade liberalization leads to skill-biased technological change, which in turn raises the relative return to skilled labor. When firms get access to a larger market, the relative profitability of different technologies changes in favor of the more skill-intensive technology. As the composition of firms changes to one with predominantly skill-intensive firms, the relative demand for skilled labor increases. This way, we establish a link between trade, technology and relative returns to skilled and unskilled labor.

  • Social class, family background, and intergenerational mobility : A comment on Mcintosh and Munk
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-2921 .- 1873-572X. ; 53:1, s. 118-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • McIntosh and Munk claim that the class schema developed by Erikson and Goldthorpe lacks validity and should not be taken as a basis for studies of intergenerational social mobility. Their paper is founded on a serious misconception of why the schema is in fact used by sociologists in mobility research and, for this reason, their test of its validity is essentially misdirected. In addition, the test itself is not carried out in an appropriate way nor, it would seem, with data of adequate quality.

  • Growth effects of government expenditure and taxation in rich countries : A reply
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-2921 .- 1873-572X. ; 50:1, s. 219-221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • gell et al. (2005) criticise our earlier findings (Folster and Henrekson 2001) of a robust negative relationship between government size and economic growth for an extended sample of rich countries. In this short paper it is argued that their critique is unfounded. Most importantly, the critique does not deal with the main result of the original study, namely that the most complete specifications for assessing the relationship between government expenditure and growth in rich countries are robust even according to stringent extreme bounds criteria.

  • Fiscal implications of AIDS in South Africa
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-2921. ; 51:7, s. 1614-1640
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of people living with HIV is alarmingly large. In addition to the incomprehensible human suffering of those directly affected, AIDS also has large, negative economic effects. In this paper, I study the fiscal implications of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa in a standard neoclassical growth model. I find that an antiretroviral program is to a large extent self financing. Improvement in dependency ratios and health care cost savings would pay for Rand 144 billion of a full epidemiological intervention. The indirect effect through the changing demographic structure will be more important than the direct health care cost saving effect. I also explore different taxation policies. The households would be willing to sacrifice an amount equal to 12% of GDP in the first period to be subject to an optimal (Ramsey) fiscal policy rather than an alternative fixed debt to GDP policy. The optimal policy implies an increase in government debt during the peak of the epidemic.

  • Expected Life-Time Utility and Hedging Demands in a Partially Observable Economy
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-572X .- 0014-2921. ; 52:6, s. 1072-1096
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the expected life-time utility and the hedging demands in an exchange only, representative agent general equilibrium under incomplete information. We derive an expression for the investor's expected life-time utility, and analyze his hedging demands for intertemporal changes in the stochastic unobservable growth of the endowment process and the changing quality of information regarding these changes. The hedging demands consist of two components, which could work in opposite directions so that a conservative consumer may end up having positive hedging demands. Our results are qualitatively different from those prevailing under constant growth (cf. [Brennan, M.J., 1998. The role of learning in dynamic portfolio decisions. European Finance Review, 1, 295–306; Ziegler, A., 2003. Incomplete Information and Heterogeneous Beliefs in Continuous-Time Finance. Springer, Berlin, Chapter 2].

  • Starving the Beast? Intra-Generational Conflict and Balanced Budget Rules
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-2921. ; 51:1, s. 145-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A balanced budget requirement does not only prevent fiscal policy makers from smoothing tax distortions but also affects their preferred choice of government spending. The paper analyzes the conditions under which groups opposed to government spending might want to implement a balanced budget requirement in order to induce the government to spend less. It shows that relaxing a balanced budget requirement need not be associated with higher government spending.

  • Search in Cities
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Economic Review. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-2921 .- 1873-572X. ; 53:6, s. 607-624
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to expose the recent developments of urban search models which incorporate a land market into a search-matching framework. Using these models, we will be able to explain why unemployment rates vary within a city, how city structure affects workers’ labor-market outcomes, how unemployment benefits and the job-destruction rate affect the growth of cities and why workers living far away from job centers search less intensively and experience higher unemployment rates than those residing closer to jobs. We are also able to explain why, as compared to whites, black workers spend more time commuting to work but travel less miles and search for jobs over a smaller area.
