    • An optical shearography configuration is presented which can be used for the measurement of slope change for static and vibrating objects in real time. Displacement and vibration amplitude fields are extracted from the shear data, which is an useful property in noise environments. In a Michelson interferometer set-up the two arms are provided with a phase-shift mirror and a bias modulation mirror to carry out the numerical evaluation of the measured deformation. Experimental results for an edge- clamped aluminium plate are presented

    • We investigate, analytically and numerically, stationary soliton-like pulse propagation in nonlinear optical fibres, taking into account the effects of fourth order dispersion. A new type of stationary stable soliton-like solution is found. A unique feature of this type of solution is their unusual asymptotic behaviour (oscillating tails). © 1994.

    • We analyze the possible stationary states formed by pairs of dark solitons propagating in dual-core optical fibers, i.e. in a nonlinear coupler. These are local disturbances on a constant background. We find new dark soliton states, characterize them and show that they differ from the soliton states consisting of coupled bright solitons in several ways. © 1994.

  • Optical fiber-grating compressors utilizing long fibers

    • The properties of optical fiber-grating compressors have been investigated numerically, considering fibers ten times longer than in previous studies. It is found that such long fibers yield substantially better compression than the previously investigated short ones. Also considerde are the sensitivity of pulse shape on the compression by using Gaussian-, parabolic- and sech- shaped pulses as initial conditions. © 1994.

    • A scanned probe optical microscope allowing nondestructive studies of a wide range of objects and surfaces is described. The microscope utilizes a noninvasive optical trap to position a microscopic probe light source in immediate proximity to the studied object. We demonstrate the method experimentally and show theoretically its potential for optical imaging with subdiffraction limited resolution of, e.g., biological objects.

  • Soliton-like pulses governed by fourth order dispersion in optical fibers

    • The properties of pulse propagation in a nonlinear fiber including negative fourth order dispersion added to anomalous second order dispersion are analyzed numerically and analytically. An exact localized analytical solution is presented, and using an approximate variational method, an entire family of stationary approximate solutions is also obtained. These solutions are found to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
