  • Tabletop divergent-light halos
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - : IOP Publishing. - 1361-6552 .- 0031-9120. ; 42, s. 579-584
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study artificial halos generated by microscopic crystals suspended in an aqueous solution which is illuminated by a divergent light source. By measuring the diameters of the halos we can deduct the refracting angles of the crystals and compare them with known values.

  • The Manhattan Project - a part of physics history
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 41:6, s. 493-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current physics textbooks tend to exclude military applications, but it is explained here how a study of the Manhattan project—the devastatingly successful attempt to develop an atomic bomb—can show students how the lives and work of physicists are shaped by events in society. Much of the original source material is available in books and on the internet (and referenced here), which allows students to discover the views of the scientists for themselves.

  • A roller coaster viewed through motion tracker data
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 40:6, s. 522-526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A motion tracker measures acceleration and rotation in three dimensions, sufficient for a complete determination of the motion. In this article, a rollercoaster ride is analysed with reference to motion tracker data. The use of this type of data in education is discussed as a way to deepen students’ understanding of concepts related to force and acceleration.

  • Acceleration in one, two and three dimensions in launched roller coasters)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 43:5, s. 483-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During a roller coaster ride, the body experiences acceleration in three dimensions. An accelerometer can measure and provide a graph of the forces on the body during different parts of a ride. To couple the experience of the body to pictures of the ride and an analysis of data can contribute to a deeper understanding of Newton's laws. This article considers the physics of launched roller coasters. Measurements were performed with a three-dimensional co-moving accelerometer. An analysis is presented of the forces in the different ride elements of the Kanonen in Göteborg and the Speed Monster in Oslo, which both include loops and offer rich examples of force and acceleration in all dimensions.

  • How do we know that the Earth spins around its axis?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 43:2, s. 158-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A carousel gives possibilities to explore physics in rotating systems and to gain first-hand experience of methods to measure rotation, without the need for an external reference. This paper discusses the Foucault pendulum, a well as the sideways deflection of horizontally and vertically moving objects in a rotating system. These experiments lay a foundation for an understanding of ways to demonstrate that the earth spins around its

  • Rollercoaster loop shapes
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 40:6, s. 517-521
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many modern rollercoasters feature loops. Although textbook loops are often circular, real rollercoaster loops are not. In this paper, we look into the mathematical description of various possible loop shapes, as well as their riding properties. We also discuss how a study of loop shapes can be used in physics education.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 42:2, s. 218-219
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The opening of the Nobel archives in 1974 for prizes older than 50 years gave historians the possibility of glimpsing behind closed doors. Aant Elzinga has used this opportunity to investigate one of the most frequently asked questions about Nobel prizes: why was the theory of relativity never awarded a prize?

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 40:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Here are some questions to ponder when visiting an amusement park and trying rides, such as the Waveswinger pictured above. Some of the answers may be found in articles in this issue, for the others, consult a physics teacher.

  • Swings and slides
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physics Education. - 0031-9120. ; 40:6, s. 527-533
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of playground rides as teaching tools is discussed with the emphasis being on slides and swings. A variety of different aspects of physics are covered including force, acceleration, friction, electrostatics and reflection. The physics content would be applicable to most age groups at some level.
