  • A well-posed and discretely stable perfectly matched layer for elastic wave equations in second order formulation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Communications in Computational Physics. - : Global Science Press. - 1815-2406 .- 1991-7120. ; 11, s. 1643-1672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a well-posed and discretely stable perfectly matched layer for the anisotropic (and isotropic) elastic wave equations without first re-writing the governing equations as a first order system. The new model is derived by the complex coordinate stretching technique. Using standard perturbation methods we show that complex frequency shift together with a chosen real scaling factor ensures the decay of eigen-modes for all relevant frequencies. To buttress the stability properties and the robustness of the proposed model, numerical experiments are presented for anisotropic elastic wave equations. The model is approximated with a stable node-centered finite difference scheme that is second order accurate both in time and space.

    • Anna recently ceased driving and sold her car. She is 91 years old and says that “everybody” teased her for her driving: “Are you driving at your age? I get tired of the comments. But in addition, I also found how my eye sight diminished. Well, I could still see the road but not all the road signs.” She continues telling about her mobility options, before and after the day she sold the car. Going by bus is not a completely convenient option for her, given where she lives, in the outskirts of a middle-sized Swedish town. “Of course I miss my car. Now, I prefer walking to the shops and to the library, instead of going by bus. It is about five kilometres and I can manage it with my walker. I also feel good when I am out and about”—she says.1 At the same time, as she complains about the loss of freedom that automobility gave her, she explains how she draws freedom from her newly found ways of movement. Although she walks a few kilometres to the shops and services, she does not have to travel far from home every day. She always could, given her age, choose immobility instead of mobility, if she wanted.

  • Optimizing Free Hand Selection in Large Displays by Adapting to User’s Physical Movements
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2016 Symposium on Spatial User Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450340687 ; , s. 23-31
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advance in motion sensing technologies such as Microsoft Kinect and ASUS Xtion has enabled users to select targets on a large display through natural hand gestures. In such interaction, the users move left and right to navigate the display, and they frequently adjust body proximity against the display thus to switch between overall views and focus views. These physical movements benefit information navigation, interaction modality switch, and user interface adaptation. But in more specific context of free hand selection in large displays, the effect of physical movements is less systematically investigated. To explore the potential of physical movements in free hand selection, a physical movements-adapted technique is developed and evaluated. The results show that the new technique has significant improvements in both selection efficiency and accuracy, the more difficult selection task the more obvious improvement in accuracy. Additionally, the new technique is preferred to the baseline of pointer acceleration (PA) technique by participants.

  • Large-Scale Identification of Gibberellin-Related Transcription Factors Defines Group VII ETHYLENE RESPONSE FACTORS as Functional DELLA Partners
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Plant Physiology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0032-0889 .- 1532-2548. ; 166, s. 1022-1032
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DELLA proteins are the master negative regulators in gibberellin (GA) signaling acting in the nucleus as transcriptional regulators. The current view of DELLA action indicates that their activity relies on the physical interaction with transcription factors (TFs). Therefore, the identification of TFs through which DELLAs regulate GA responses is key to understanding these responses from a mechanistic point of view. Here, we have determined the TF interactome of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) DELLA protein GIBBERELLIN INSENSITIVE and screened a collection of conditional TF overexpressors in search of those that alter GA sensitivity. As a result, we have found RELATED TO APETALA2.3, an ethylene-induced TF belonging to the group VII ETHYLENE RESPONSE FACTOR of the APETALA2/ethylene responsive element binding protein superfamily, as a DELLA interactor with physiological relevance in the context of apical hook development. The combination of transactivation assays and chromatin immunoprecipitation indicates that the interaction with GIBBERELLIN INSENSITIVE impairs the activity of RELATED TO APETALA2.3 on the target promoters. This mechanism represents a unique node in the cross regulation between the GA and ethylene signaling pathways controlling differential growth during apical hook development.

  • From Requirements To Continuous Re-prioritization Of Hypotheses
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Workshop on Continuous Software Evolution and Delivery (CSED '16). - New York, NY, USA : ACM Digital Library. ; , s. 63-69
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Typically, customer feedback collected in the prestudy, and during the early stages of software development, determines what new features to develop. However, once the decision to develop a new feature is taken, companies stop validating if this feature adds value to its intended customers. Instead, focus is shifted towards developing and implementing the feature. As a result, re-prioritization of feature content is rare, and companies find it difficult to continuously assess and validate feature value. In this paper, we explore the data collection practices in five software development companies. We introduce a model that allows continuous re-prioritization of features. Our model advocates a development approach in which requirements are viewed as hypotheses that need to be continuously validated, and where customer feedback is used to continuously re-prioritize feature content. We identify how the model helps companies transition from early specification of requirements towards continuous re-prioritization of hypotheses.

  • Ontogenic succession of thermokarst thaw ponds is linked to dissolved organic matter quality and microbial degradation potential
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Limnology and Oceanography. - : WILEY. - 0024-3590 .- 1939-5590. ; 65:SI, s. S248-S263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Warming climate is thawing the permafrost in arctic and subarctic regions, leading to formation of thermokarst ponds. During the formation and geomorphological succession of these ponds, carbon that has been trapped in frozen soils for thousands of years is hydrologically mobilized and returned to the active carbon cycle. We sampled 12 thermokarst ponds representing three different stages of pond succession to study the potential of microbial communities to metabolize the organic carbon in the water. We investigated the quality of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the water column based on the spectrophotometric and fluorometric properties of the chromophoric dissolved organic matter combined with parallel factor analysis and the potential of the microbial community for degrading these carbon compounds based on genetic markers related to carbon degradation. Our analysis showed a clear difference in the DOC quality across the different developmental stages. In the younger ponds, organic matter quality suggested that it was originating from the degrading permafrost and in the metagenomes collected from these ponds, the normalized abundance of genes related to degradation of carbon compounds was higher. There was also a shift in the degradation potential in the water column of the ponds, with higher potential for organic matter degradation in deeper, anoxic layers. In conclusion, our results show that the DOC quality and the genetic potential of the microbial community for carbon cycling change across the pond ontogeny, suggesting a capacity of the microbial communities to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

  • Distribution of infectious and parasitic agents among three sentinel bee species across European agricultural landscapes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - 2045-2322. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Infectious and parasitic agents (IPAs) and their associated diseases are major environmental stressors that jeopardize bee health, both alone and in interaction with other stressors. Their impact on pollinator communities can be assessed by studying multiple sentinel bee species. Here, we analysed the field exposure of three sentinel managed bee species (Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris and Osmia bicornis) to 11 IPAs (six RNA viruses, two bacteria, three microsporidia). The sentinel bees were deployed at 128 sites in eight European countries adjacent to either oilseed rape fields or apple orchards during crop bloom. Adult bees of each species were sampled before their placement and after crop bloom. The IPAs were detected and quantified using a harmonised, high-throughput and semi-automatized qPCR workflow. We describe differences among bee species in IPA profiles (richness, diversity, detection frequencies, loads and their change upon field exposure, and exposure risk), with no clear patterns related to the country or focal crop. Our results suggest that the most frequent IPAs in adult bees are more appropriate for assessing the bees' IPA exposure risk. We also report positive correlations of IPA loads supporting the potential IPA transmission among sentinels, suggesting careful consideration should be taken when introducing managed pollinators in ecologically sensitive environments.

  • The role of particle size and other properties on silo discharge behaviour of chipped wood biomass
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Powder Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0032-5910 .- 1873-328X. ; 432
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the UK government emphasizes the pivotal role of sustainable bioenergy in electricity, transportation, and heating. However, challenges persist in handling biomass particulate solids in production facilities, leading to economic impacts. This study investigates the flow characteristics of stemwood chips from four tree species using a novel drum chipper. Experimental analyses include bulk density measurements, silo discharge studies, biomass flow property assessments, and wall friction measurements. Comparative analyses are performed using Jenike's procedure for building wedge-shaped silos, with a focus on predicting the critical opening size to prevent arching. Additionally, the paper delves into the creation of statistical models aimed at identifying key factors influencing the flow behaviour during silo discharge. Emphasis is placed on understanding potential discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental results concerning critical silo openings for arch-free discharge. The results contribute to understanding the factors influencing the flow behaviour of wood chips, informing silo design considerations. Our findings suggest limitations in applying traditional silo design methods, urging further research for more accurate predictions.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 4th Railway logistics Seminar. - Kouvola, Finland : Lappeenranta University of Technology. ; , s. 181-198, s. 181-198
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Specialization, higher competition and global markets have resulted on situation, where industrial companiesneed to transform their operating structures to more lean (efficient), but also being able maintain their agility(flexibility for changes in order that profitability is assured). This finding also got ground in our literature review– leanness and agility are not necessarily opposite paradigms in manufacturing companies. However, indeveloping economies implementing leanness, and having responsive logistics performance is characterized byfusion of macro logistics (governmental) and business logistics issues. Our three case studies verify literaturefindings, and shed some North-European and Russian perspective on the research regarding this topic. Based onfindings, both Finnish and Swedish case companies are increasingly favoring foreign suppliers, and emphasis isespecially on developing economies. Also integration of product life-cycles on the logistics decisions is vital, and input factor in logistics configuration decisions. Russian manufacturing unit case study, operating near-byFinnish border, reveals that properly working logistics flow is essential for business success, since deliveries arenot limited to Finnish Original Equipment Manufacturers or Russian markets, but Russian case company needsto manage shipments directly to China and India too. International shipments are managed through Finland, while manufacturing base is located in Russia.

  • Debriefing in simulation conducted in small and large groups : Nursing students’ experiences
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Education and Practice. - : Sciedu Press. - 1925-4040 .- 1925-4059. ; 4:9, s. 173-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The debriefing phase in human patient simulation is considered to be crucial for learning. To ensure good learning conditions, the use of small groups is recommended, which poses a major challenge when the student count is high. The use of large groups may provide an alternative for typical lecture-style education and contribute to a more frequently and repeated training which is considered to be important for achieving simulation competency. The purpose of the present study was to describe nursing students’ experiences obtained during the debriefing conducted in small and large groups with the use of a qualitative descriptive approach. The informants had participated in a human patient simulation situation either in large or small groups. Data was collected through the use of five focus-group interviews and analysed by content analysis. The findings showed that independent of group-size the informants experienced the learning strategies to be unfamiliar and intrusive, and in the large groups to such an extent that learning was hampered. Debriefing was perceived as offering excellent opportunities for transferable learning, and activity, predictability and preparedness were deemed essential. Small groups provided the best learning conditions in that safety and security were ensured, but were perceived as providing limited challenges to accommodate professional requirements as a nurse. Simulation competency as a prerequisite for learning was shown not to be developed isolated in conjunction with simulation, but depends on a systematic effort to build a learning community in the programme in general. The faculty needs to support the students to be conscious and accustomed to learning as a heightened experience of learning out of their comfort zone.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Iron and Steel Research International. - 1006-706X .- 2210-3988. ; 14:5, supp 1, s. 245-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High strength steels can be produced by austempering of Si-containing steels. It is possible to achieve high toughness and good wear resistance in these steels. Surface hardening of this group of steels can further increase the surface hardness and wear resistance and in combination with high strength in the bulk, also the fatigue strength. Surface hardening by laser-hardening has been performed on steel 55Si7 after austempering of the steel in order to create a ferritic-austenitic carbide free microstructure. Tempering effects and hardness values have been studied. Optical as well as scanning electron microscopy has been used together with x-ray diffractometry in the characterization of the micro-structural changes. Wear resistance testing of austempered and laser hardened samples respectively of the Si-alloyed steel have been reported and also compared with that of the conventional Cr-alloyed steel. The results of the specific phase transformation from austenite to martensite during wear process will be reported.

    • The problem of remotely controlling an unstable noiseless linear time invariant system with Gaussian distributed initial state over two different noisy relay channels with average power constraints is considered. For information transmission over orthogonal half-duplex and non-orthogonal full-duplex relay channel, we propose a coding/decoding scheme based on Schalkwijk-Kailath scheme. Therefore, we derive conditions on rate which are sufficient for mean square stability of the linearly controlled LTI system over the given relay channels.

  • Connecting the Greenland ice-core and U/Th timescales via cosmogenic radionuclides : Testing the synchroneity of Dansgaard-Oeschger events
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Climate of the Past. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1814-9324 .- 1814-9332. ; 14:11, s. 1755-1781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last glacial period Northern Hemisphere climate was characterized by extreme and abrupt climate changes, so-called Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) events. Most clearly observed as temperature changes in Greenland ice-core records, their climatic imprint was geographically widespread. However, the temporal relation between DO events in Greenland and other regions is uncertain due to the chronological uncertainties of each archive, limiting our ability to test hypotheses of synchronous change. In contrast, the assumption of direct synchrony of climate changes forms the basis of many timescales. Here, we use cosmogenic radionuclides (10Be, 36Cl, 14C) to link Greenland ice-core records to U=Th-dated speleothems, quantify offsets between the two timescales, and improve their absolute dating back to 45 000 years ago. This approach allows us to test the assumption that DO events occurred synchronously between Greenland ice-core and tropical speleothem records with unprecedented precision. We find that the onset of DO events occurs within synchronization uncertainties in all investigated records. Importantly, we demonstrate that local discrepancies remain in the temporal development of rapid climate change for specific events and speleothems. These may either be related to the location of proxy records relative to the shifting atmospheric fronts or to underestimated U=Th dating uncertainties. Our study thus highlights the potential for misleading interpretations of the Earth system when applying the common practice of climate wiggle matching.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As modern supercomputing systems reach the peta-flop performance range, they grow in both size and complexity. This makes them increasingly vulnerable to failures from a variety of causes. Checkpointing is a popular technique for tolerating such failures, enablingapplications to periodically save their state and restart computation after a failure. Although a many automated system-level checkpointing solutions are currently availableto HPC users, manual application-level checkpointing remains more popular due to its superior performance. This paper improves performance of automated checkpointing via a compiler analysis for incremental checkpointing. This analysis, which works with both sequential and OpenMP applications, reduces checkpoint sizes by as much as 80% and enables asynchronous checkpointing.

  • Ingår i: Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1395-3907 .- 1600-0420 .- 1755-375X .- 1755-3768. ; 86:3, s. 329-337
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE To present long-term ocular complications and electroretinographic (ERG) findings in children with long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD) deficiency - a life-threatening metabolic disease - and the relation to age at diagnosis, treatment and other clinical parameters. METHODS Ten children with LCHAD deficiency underwent repeated ophthalmological evaluations including ERG. RESULTS All 10 children developed chorioretinal pathology. Regardless of age at diagnosis, initiation of treatment and age at examination, inter-individual differences were present. Profound chorioretinal atrophy, severe visual impairment and progressive myopia had developed in two teenagers. Milder chorioretinopathy with or without subnormal visual acuity was present in all other children. ERG was pathological in seven children. The chorioretinopathy often started in the peripapillary or perimacular areas. In one patient, unilateral visual impairment was associated with fibrosis. CONCLUSION Early diagnosis and adequate therapy might delay but not prevent the progression of retinal complications. Late diagnosis with severe symptoms at diagnosis, neonatal hypoglycaemia and frequent decompensations may increase the progression rate of the chorioretinopathy. LCHAD deficiency, a potentially lethal disease, is sometimes difficult to diagnose. Unusual chorioretinal findings should alert the ophthalmologist to the long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, especially if there is a history of neonatal hypoglycaemia or failure to thrive.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IEEE Conference On Network Function Virtualization And Software Defined Networks (Nfv-Sdn). - : IEEE. - 9781538632857 ; , s. 79-84
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The combination of Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) promises to provide highly flexible and configurable network infrastructures. This relies, however, on an efficient assignment of the respective Service Function Chain (SFC). This is related to Virtual Network Embedding (VNE), where algorithms are devised to provide such an assignment. To evaluate and compare the efficiency of such algorithms, well-designed embedding problems have to be generated. This paper presents a new mechanism for generating embedding problems: Problems are generated from a given set of SFCs such that each generated problem is known in advance to have an optimal solution. Experimenters can use this approach to investigate specific properties of embedding algorithms. The approach, thereby, facilitates more detailed evaluation.

  • “The future lives with us”: Diversity work and processes of change in the Church of Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Anthropology Book Forum. - 2380-7725.
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Kristina Helgesson Kjellin introduces her book A Good Place to Be. An Anthropological Study of Diversity Work and Identity formation in the Church of Sweden with the story of how a small Marian side altar suddenly appears in a church in the suburb Skärholmen outside Stockholm. This type of side altar, common in Catholic and Orthodox Churches, is usually not seen in the Lutheran Church of Sweden. Its appearance in the suburban church can be related to the presence of migrant communities with their roots in other (Christian) traditions, members of which today make up a considerable part of the churchgoers in Sweden. The story of how the side altar became integrated in this Swedish church is one of the examples offered by Helgesson Kjellin of the multifaceted encounters between the tradition of the Church of Sweden and different migrant communities. Through ethnographic studies of such encounters, Helgesson Kjellin aims to illuminate what she refers to as “diversity work” [mångfaldsarbete]. As the term can signify the promotion of diversity regarding a range of categories such as gender, age, sexuality, functionality, ethnicity and religion, the author clarifies that her focus is the “cultural and religious diversity, mainly the Christian diversity” p.15) that characterize the congregations she has studied. These all belong to a network named “The future lives with us” [Framtiden bor hos oss] formed in 2001 by congregations in a number of urban centers in Sweden around a common vision of the Church of Sweden as “a church for everyone, irrespective of cultural and/or religious background” (p. 15). Fieldwork was conducted among employees and volunteers active in the network, with a special focus on the church in Skärholmen. The criteria for joining the network is to be a minority congregation (meaning that less than 70% of the inhabitants are members of the Church of Sweden) and to be located in an urban, culturally and religious diverse community. An important feature of these congregations is that in spite of low numbers of members, the level of activity is high with many people coming to the church to pray, to ask for aid and to attend church services. For the churches in the network the burning issue is how to be relevant in their communities under these conditions, including the economic challenge for a post-state church that now depends on membership fees.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health issue, but it also jeopardises the effectiveness of antimicrobials as a means of curing infections in animals that threaten their health, welfare and productivity. Several reports show that infections in humans caused by antimicrobial-resistant pathogens may be linked to antimicrobial use (AMU) and AMR in food-producing animals; however, to what extent this happens is unknown. Use of antimicrobials drives the emergence of AMR, therefore, their extensive over-use and misuse in livestock is of concern.Robust AMU and AMR data are important to monitor the progress of interventions aiming to reduce AMR in the livestock sector. However, not all countries have complete data on antibiotic sales or use, so our current knowledge of global AMU is primarily based on modelling estimates. Antimicrobial resistance prevalence data are limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, but in some high-income regions fairly robust data are available. It should also be noted that monitoring guidelines and protocols are available to provide globally harmonised AMR data.Using antimicrobials rationally and not using them for disease prevention purposes is key to reducing AMU. To ensure that these drugs are used appropriately we must ensure that: a) veterinary services are accessible and affordable for farmers; b) antibiotics are only sold on prescription; c) veterinarians earn no revenue linked to the sale or prescription of antibiotics; d) veterinarians have substantial skills in preventive medicine (good animal husbandry, efficient biosecurity and vaccinology); and e) the benefits of preventive measures must appeal to farmers so that they are willing to pay for them.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Electrochemistry communications. - : Elsevier BV. - 1388-2481 .- 1873-1902. ; 50, s. 43-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-discharge is one of the most critical issues to address to allow for industrialization of conducting polymer (CP) based electric energy storage devices. The present work investigates the underlying cause of self-discharge in positively charged polypyrrole (PPy), which is one of the most frequently studied CPs for such devices. The analyzed material is a composite of PPy and cellulose from Cladophora sp. algae forming a free standing paper-like material. From the time dependence of the potential decay as well as from independent spectroelectrochemical investigations the decay was attributed to a kinetically limiting Faradaic reaction, intrinsic to the polymer, forming a reactive intermediate that irreversibly reacts with its surroundings in a kinetically non-limiting following reaction. As such, nucleophilic addition of electrolyte nudeophiles is not found to be rate-determining. These results provide insight into the self-discharge phenomenon in p-doped CPs, and information regarding the potential range in which CPs can operate with insignificant self-discharge.

    • In this study we estimate the willingness to pay for railway noise abatements based on the effect of railway noise on property prices. We estimate both steps of the hedonic regression technique on a large data set of different Swedish regions which contains detailed information about railway noise along with socioeconomic characteristics for each property/household. The estimated demand relationship suggest welfare gains for a 1 dB reduction of railway noise as; 1240 SEK per individual and year at the baseline noise level of 71 dB, and 661 SEK at the baseline noise level of 61 dB. Below a noise level of 49.09 dB, individuals have no willingness to pay for railway noise abatements. In policy, these results can be used for cost benefit analysis and to derive marginal costs for infrastructure charges.

    • The Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services has evaluated quantitative and qualitative research regarding rehabilitation for persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI) through systematic reviews. The results indicate that specialized brain injury rehabilitation for persons with post-concussion symptoms after mild TBI results in improved health, when compared to usual care (results with low certainty according to GRADE). As few high-quality studies were identified, it was not possible to assess the effects of vocational rehabilitation, rehabilitation with case management/coordinator, residential living or specialized brain rehabilitation for persons with moderate to severe TBI. A synthesis of qualitative studies showed that persons with TBI experience insufficient coordination of health services and access to rehabilitation (results with low to moderate confidence according to CERQual).
