  • Estimating the perceived tax scale within a labor supply model
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 52:1, s. 75-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish marginal tax scale is too complex to be known in detail by individuals. This paper indicates that perceived tax scales can be estimated jointly with a labor supply equation. The differences between the true and estimated tax scales are found to be small.

  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 21:1, s. 17-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neglected heterogeneity implies bias for estimators in, e.g., the Weibull duration model. In a Monte Carlo experiment the proper maximum likelihood estimator is better than a new least squares estimator. The likelihood estimator neglecting heterogeneity is inferior.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier B.V. - 1873-7374 .- 0165-1765. ; 56:2, s. 177-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compare hypothetical and real payments in a Vickrey auction. The use of hypothetical payments overestimates the real willingness to pay. The results cast doubt on the validity of hypothetical willingness to pay questions for the typical respondent.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 66:3, s. 249-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate that panel unit root tests can have high power when a small fraction of the series is stationary and may lack power when a large fraction is stationary. The acceptance or rejection of the null is thus not sufficient evidence to conclude that all series have a unit root or that all are stationary.

  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 68:2, s. 165-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Suppose that gifts are private information, only known to donor and donee, while bequests are public. Also suppose that parents care about the reputation that their bequest behavior will give them and that reputation deteriorates with the difference in amounts inherited. Then the optimal choice of altruistic parents is compensatory gifts and equal bequests. This is also what data show.

  • On the effectiveness of foreign exchange reserves during the 2021-22 US monetary tightening cycle
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines whether the size of foreign exchange (FX) reserves explains cross-country differences in foreign currency depreciation realized over the 2021-22 Federal Reserve monetary policy tightening that led to a sharp appreciation of the US dollar. Across a broad sample of countries, we document that an additional 10 percentage points of FX reserves/GDP held ex-ante were associated with 1.5 to 2 percent less exchange rate depreciation against the US dollar and this buffer effect was larger among less financially developed economies. Effects were more pronounced for large-reserve countries that sold reserves to intervene than for large-reserve countries that did not intervene, supporting the presence of both balance sheet and intervention channels. Higher ex-ante policy rates were also associated with less depreciation especially among financially open economies. An analysis of daily currency movements following the June 2021 FOMC meeting corroborates the main results. These findings suggest that FX reserves may promote monetary policy independence in the presence of global spillovers.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 166, s. 31-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • If agents are exposed to continual competitive pressure, how does a short-term variation of the severity of the competition affect agents’ performance? In a real-effort laboratory experiment, we study a one-time increase in incentives in a sequence of equally incentivized contests. Our results suggest that a short-term increase in incentives induces a behavioral response but does not boost total performance.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ECONOMICS LETTERS. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the risks associated with climate change intensify, understanding its impacts on human capital development is crucial. In this paper, we analyze the causal effects of temperature on the academic performance of students in Mexico, a middle-income country facing significant climate risks and socioeconomic challenges. Using panel data on over 5.5 million students, our results show that a 1 degrees C increase in annual average temperature leads to a 0.07 and 0.08 standard deviation decrease in Spanish and math test scores, respectively. Moreover, a one standard deviation (0.93 degrees C) increase in the long-term municipal temperature average is associated with 0.04 and 0.03 standard deviation declines in those scores. The effects are context-dependent - students in historically colder municipalities actually benefit from hotter temperatures, likely due to improved learning conditions in underinsulated schools and homes. However, the detrimental impacts appear consistent across urban, rural, and socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, underscoring the vulnerability of marginalized populations to the academic consequences of climate change. Overall, our findings highlight the urgency of addressing the educational dimensions of the global climate crisis through targeted interventions and adaptive policies, particularly in lowand middle-income countries.

  • 2008

    • This note concerns the importance of habit formation for social accounting. With internal habit formation, earlier procedures for welfare measurement in the first best apply with minor modifications. This result strengthens the idea behind using the comprehensive net national product as a welfare indicator. If, on the other hand, part of the habit formation is exogenous to each consumer, the exact welfare measure will also reflect the associated external effect.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate in-group gender bias in real-world hiring decisions by combining administrative data with data from a large-scale field experiment on hiring in which fictitious resumes with randomly assigned information about gender were sent to Swedish employers. Our results suggest that women (female recruiters or firms with a high share of female employees) favor women in the recruitment process. In contrast, we do not find much evidence that men (male recruiters or firms with a high share of male employees) favor men.

We find that the cost increase implied by the tax did not induce hosts to exit the platform, nor did it lead to an increase in rental prices. These findings support the conjecture that the tax was insufficiently enforced, as it relied on taxpayers to self-report their rental income.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mixed frequency Vector Autoregressions (MF-VARs) can be used to provide timely and high frequency estimates or nowcasts of variables for which data is available at a low frequency. Bayesian methods are commonly used with MF-VARs to overcome over-parameterization concerns. But Bayesian methods typically rely on computationally demanding Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. In this paper, we develop Variational Bayes (VB) methods for use with MF-VARs using Dirichlet-Laplace global-local shrinkage priors. We show that these methods are accurate and computationally much more efficient than MCMC in two empirical applications involving large MF-VARs.

At the same time, patients have strong preferences to buy the cheapest generic product. This implies that patients in most cases buy the cheapest generic product and experience welfare losses when the physician has prescribed another product.

    • The informational value of the aggregate US unemployment rate has recently been questioned because of a unit root in the labor-force participation rate; the lack of mean reversion implies that long-run changes in unemployment rates are highly unlikely to reflect long-run changes in joblessness. This note shows that this critique also extends to unemployment rates for sub-populations, such as prime-aged males.

  • Permanent versus Transitory Wage Differentials and the Inequality-Hours Hypothesis
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 121:3, s. 537-541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper disentangles the effect of inequality in permanent and transitory wages on hours worked by, first, estimating the two components for Swedish industries and, second, using the resulting estimates as explanatory variables in an hours-worked equation. Consistent with Bell and Freeman’s (2001) inequality-hours hypothesis, permanent wage differentials are found to have a positive effect on individuals’ hours of work while transitory wage differentials have no effect. However, the analysis also shows that, in estimated hours-worked equations, inequality in observed wages is potentially a good approximation for inequality in permanent wages.

  • Is China Different? A Meta-analysis of export-led growth
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 115:2, s. 177-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine whether China has benefited more from exports than other countries. The results show that exports have been more significant for growth in China than in other countries, even when China is compared with other transition economies.

  • Intergenerational transmission of luck versus effort beliefs
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Beliefs about whether luck or effort determines individuals’ economic outcomes in life (luck vs effort beliefs) are central for individuals’ opinions on inequality and political preferences. Those who think that luck is relatively more important than effort generally accept less inequality, want more economic redistribution and support a larger welfare state. We study the transmission of luck vs effort beliefs from parents to children. By means of an original, representative survey of Swedish parents, matched to administrative data, we document that the vast majority teach their children not only that effort is crucial for economic success, but that effort is more important than what they themselves actually believe it to be.

  • Stock exchange mergers and return co-movement : A flexible dynamic component correlations model
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 121:3, s. 511-515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The creation of a common cross-border stock trading platform is found, by use of a Flexible Dynamic Component Correlations (FDCC) model, to have increased long-run trends in conditional correlations between foreign and domestic stock market returns.
