- Niklas Luhmann was one of the most innovative and productive social theorists of the 20thcentury. He developed a comprehensive and distinctive social theory and his ideas have enrichedmany disciplines. Yet, only few geographers have engaged with his work. Convinced of its qualities,our intention is to stimulate a critical reception of his theory among human geographers. Herean introduction into his theory of social systems is provided, and the possibilities for a geographyof social systems is explored. A key element of our proposal is a differential notion of space as apossibility of distinction, which complements Luhmann's epistemological notion of time. Our conclu-sion is that a geography of social systems would have to set out conceptually from accessibilitysystems, which are systems that encompass communications, their necessary physical and ecologicalenvironment, as well as their coordination in various dimensions of space and time

- In this paper we discuss whether environmental impact assessment (EIA) can serve as an arena for including citizens in the decisionmaking process. Through a case study of a proposed extension of a regional airport in Sweden, the role of EIA, and to what degree different actors and arguments influenced the decision, is analysed. It is found that there are serious problems concerning public participation when it comes to projects which extend beyond the local level and which play an important part in the regional economy. In these cases there is a risk, despite the aims of EIA, that the process will be characterised by public exclusion rather than by public involvement.

- During the last few years, Swedish municipalities have become increasingly engaged in competition to attract in-migrants. An important element of these efforts has been the use of place- marketing campaigns and promotion. Very little is known, however, about these attempts in terms of the number of municipalities involved, economic efforts, ways of marketing, target groups, etc. Furthermore, and more importantly, as for place-marketing studies in general, there have been few attempts at evaluation. The author's purpose is to provide an overview and to evaluate the effects of place-marketing efforts made by municipalities in Sweden to attract in-migrants. The empirical material is based largely on survey responses from 220 municipalities, and provides data for a general overview as well as for the evaluative approaches employed in the study. Among other findings, the results suggest that, although this kind of marketing has definitely become more important over the last few years, there is little evidence of any significant effects on interregional migration flows.

- In this paper we present the results of detailed case-study work on two important music production centres: Stockholm (Sweden) and Kingston (Jamaica). It is shown that both are dynamic innovation and production centres for populate music. In both cases local characteristics of the organisational and firm structure in the industry are claimed to be crucial for understanding innovation processes and the competitiveness of the resulting products. However, it is shown that considerable differences exist between the two centres in terms of the profits and returns (both monetary and otherwise) on global competitiveness and success made both by local actors and by the local production system. It is suggested that two crucial areas explain these unequal returns to commercially successful creativity: interfirm and intrafirm links between the local and global; and the effectiveness of intellectual property regimes. It is suggested that work on cultural-products industries must attempt to understand not only the processes from which commercial innovation arises and in which it is embedded, but also the processes and mechanisms by which appropriate levels of returns on creativity can be secured by the local production centre.

- Hailed by economists as an idea whose time has come, the ‘new economic geography’ has not been quite as favourably received by geographers. Frequently seen as a prime case of academic imperialism, few appear willing to concede that economists may have something to contribute to economic geography. Conversely, beyond the token reference to vintage publications, economists often dismiss geographers' economic geography as a dead end. In this paper we take a more detached view. Exploring points of convergence and divergence, we identify lessons that either side may learn from the other. While not shying away from existing differences, we conclude that there is indeed some common ground.

- In this paper I investigate the ways in which participants in mobile-phone conversations orient to each other's location, activities, and availability. By looking at data from recorded mobile-phone conversations, I use a conversation analytic approach to make initial observations on the character of mobile-phone conversations. I found that the frequent question "what are you doing?" sometimes caused a location to be given as part of the answer which shows how location, activity, and availability are strongly related. The participants thus obtained information about location, when this was considered relevant, through asking about activity. Location seemed especially relevant if it provided information about a future meeting. In some of the conversations where it seemed there was something going on where the 'called party' was located, the 'caller' reacted by initiating the conversation with a strategy which gave the called party a chance to end the conversation.

- This study focuses on the population changes in the countryside and in urban centres within the municipalities of Sweden outside the metropolitan areas, between 1990 and 1997. Overall, the countryside showed a higher population increase than the municipality centres. Smaller population centres suffered a population decline. The increase in population in the countryside was strongest in areas surrounding the metropolises and around regional centres. Statistical analysis showed that population change outside population centres mainly varies with the average income, labour-market access, and taxation values or housing costs in the municipalities. This process of change has run directly counter to the policy that was formulated for small municipalities from the end of the 1960s onwards. The growth in rural population was spontaneous for the most part, and more or less in conflict with the plans of the municipalities.
