    • Cecilia Aare, Department of Social Sciences, Södertörn UniversityNarrative Commitment and a Complex Narrative Technique in Gustaf Hellström’s War Reportage (Narrativt engagemang och komplex berättarteknik i Gustaf Hellströms krigsreportage)The 1910s was a dynamic period in Swedish journalism when reporters became professionals and the largest newspapers engaged their own foreign correspondents. A prominent correspondent of the time was Gustaf Hellström, also a famous writer. His reports from France during the First World War, collected in the book 1 1/2 mil härifrån står världens största slag, are known for their dedicated attitude. An assumption in this essay is that such an attitude corresponds to a narrative commitment, which could be divided into narrative empathy and narrative compassion. Using tools from discourse narratology and cognitive narratology, I investigate narrative techniques and strategies at work when a narrative commitment is constructed in the reportages from France. A conclusion is that parallel perspectives and a multitude of voices within the narrative construction connect the individual to the general and convey empathy with all victims of the war, civilians as well as soldiers on both sides. In a final section, I place Hellström’s series of reportages from France within a broader context where I highlight similarites with Stig Dagerman’s series of reportages Tysk höst from 1946 and Svetlana Alexievich’s documentary books from the 1980s and onwards.

  • Elias Sehlstedt – en borgerlig modernitetsförnekare
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Samlaren. - Uppsala : Svenska Litteratursällskapet. - 0348-6133 .- 2002-3871. ; 131, s. 170-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Claes Ahlund, Elias Sehlstedt – en borgerlig modernitetsförnekare (Elias Sehlstedt: a bourgeois denier of modernity) The essay focuses on the poetry of Elias Sehlstedt (1808–1874) and its relation to modernity. In his own lifetime, Sehlstedt was a widely read poet, much appreciated for his sense of humour and his witty travesties of poets such as Bellman, Franzén, Lenngren, Wallin and Tegnér. During the 20th century, Sehlstedt was dismissed as a poet of bourgeois contentment, and fell into oblivion. Nevertheless, his poetry offers an advantageous starting-point for a discussion of nineteenth century bourgeois mentalities. The object of the essay is to relate this aspect of Sehlstedt’s work not only to the private sphere of the middle class, but also to the market and to the political sphere. Theoretically, the essay relates to Matei Calinescu’s discussion of the antagonistic relation between the bourgeois idea of modernity and the aesthetic one, to Victor Svanberg’s discussion of Swedish middle-class realism, and to the concept of the structural transformation of the public sphere developed by Jürgen Habermas. In his poetry, Sehlstedt praises the modest yet comfortable life of the middle-class. He pays tribute to family values and to jovial social life. In both cases, his outlook is strikingly narrow. The current rapid transformation of the Swedish society through industrialization, urbanization and technological progress is made invisible, and can only be perceived indirectly. In addition to the general escapist tendency, the theme of financial worries is an example of this. Sehlstedt’s use of comic punch-lines often serves the same escapist purpose; smoothly obscuring modernity by means of laughter. To the modern reader, they nevertheless point out the very threats of modernity they were supposed to veil.

  • Ingår i: Samlaren. - : Svenska Litteratursällskapet. - 0348-6133 .- 2002-3871. ; 137, s. 118-142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In his study of Carl Michael Bellman literary historian Gustaf Ljunggren (1823-1905) compared the Swedish poet not only to the traditional object of comnaprison, the ancient Greek poet Anacreon, but also to the Persian fourteenth-century poet Hafiz. This article revisits Ljunggren's work in light of recent discussions about world literature and the role of historical scale in literary studies. I investigate how a change of scale, in large part due to the pressures of professionalization, created many of the prevailing assumptions concerning the proper object of Swedish literary studies and its connections to the literature of other countries. In Ljunggren's work we find an interesting alternative to the view of nation and periodization that came to dominate the discipline.

    • Johan Alfredsson, Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion, University of GothenburgThe Poetic Zone: The Performative Potential of Poetry in Picturebooks for Children (Den poetiska zonen. Poesins performativa potential i bilderböcker för barn)This article discusses how picturebooks for children can make use of poetry in order to empower child readers to bridge the asymmetric aetonormativity between child and adult inherent in the picturebook format. The article launches the concept of the poetic zone, springing from both epistemologically based poetry theory and norm critical theory. Two picturebooks are used as examples: Gro Dahle’s and Svein Nyhus’s Snill [What a Girl!], from 2002, and Lina Ekdahl and Emma Hanquist’s Vi smular vi härmar en gök [We Crumble We Imitate a Cuckoo], from 2016. Analyses of the poetic qualities of the two books show how they both pinpoint, and performatively empower, the child reader’s perspective. This takes place in the relationships between child and adult within the books’ plots, as well as in relation to the picturebook format. The poetic qualities that contribute in this sense concern both imagery, and rhythmical as well as auditory aspects of language.

  • Uteslutna associationer, språkvåld och återideologisering hos Anna Hallberg och Lars Mikael Raattamaa : Excluded Associations, Violence of Language and Re-ideologisation in Anna Hallberg and Lars Mikael Raattamaa
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Samlaren : tidskrift för svensk litteraturvetenskaplig forskning. - 0348-6133 .- 2002-3871. ; 138, s. 23-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to study what the French linguist Jean-Jacques Lecercle identified as ”the remainder of language” in his book The Violence of Language (1990), and how this is being put into play in two poetry books from 2008, by the Swedish poets Anna Hallberg and Lars Mikael Raattamaa. By explicitly challenging a large number of conventions of language, typography, and poetry, these books raise critical issues on how the language system works. These issues specifically concern what parts and aspects of language are allowed in within the linguistic system, and what parts and aspects are being kept out. These regulational mechanisms are demonstrated, and scrutinised, in these books – giving them touches of meta-critique, as well as of ideology critique. This scrutiny not only shows the relevance of identifying and understanding the mechanisms of exclusion that Lecercle identified within academic linguistics 25 years ago. It also brings them into contemporary society, where they – due to globalisation, and technological development – have disseminated, and become part of almost everyone’s daily experience. The results of the article stress how this dissemination increases the societal relevance of the kind of scrutiny undertaken by Hallberg and Raattamaa, and how it can assist in re-ideologising language.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To knock Death out of the Game. An analysis of Tomas Tranströmer’s poem “Medieval motif ”The Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer’s (1931–2015) poem “Medieval Motif ”, from For Living and Dead (1989), takes its visual point of departure in the motif “Man who plays chess with Death about his life”. A motif also found in medieval visual arts (Albertus Pictor, 1440–1509) and in modern film art (Ingmar Bergman, 1918–2007). In both Pictors painting, ”The Game of Chess with Death” (around 1480), and Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal (1957), Death knocks man out of the game by checkmate. In Tranströmer’s poem, however, things turn out somewhat differently. In “Medieval Motif ” there is unique word in Swedish poetry, “frisörsaxklippande” (“barber-scissor-like clipping”), as a determination for a sound. The analysis of the poem tries to answer a number of questions: What is this sound exactly? Why does the sound occur in a poem about a motif from the Middle Ages? What function does the sound have for the poem as an artistic whole? The “Medieval motif ”, which besides the title consists of two Sapphic stanzas, is the subject of an in-depth motif analysis and of a composition analysis. In summary, the analysis shows that the “Medieval motif ” forms an epiphany where the motif of Vanitas contributes to the understanding of the moment of togetherness as time and space cease to exist, and a previously hidden truth is revealed. As a part of that truth, Death is knocked out of the game.

  • Ingår i: Samlaren. - 0348-6133 .- 2002-3871. ; 136, s. 5-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to analyze depictions of gender and sexuality in sex education books for young children published in Sweden between 1965 and 2014. After describing the general trends in the publication of sex education literature during the period, the article discusses the narrative address and family structures, gendered descriptions of reproduction, and the introduction of assisted reproductive technologies and non-heterosexual parenting in the studied material. The majority of the sex education books portray white, two-parent families and focus on heterosexual reproduction. Men and sperm are normally described as more active and important during conception, and the reproductive process is often depicted from the sperm’s point of view. At the same time, there are books throughout the period that problematize gender stereotypes in reproduction and, from the late 1990s, heteronormative sexuality. This article also shows that verbal and visual descriptions of sexual intercourse were more explicit in sex education books from the 1970s, while books from the early 21th century depict a greater variety of families and assisted reproductive technologies. After the 1970s, sex education literature for all ages disappears and the books are more clearly adapted for different age groups.

    • Mattias Aronsson, ”Ja, denna stig är stigarnas stig”. Taoistiska influenser i Vilhelm Ekelunds verk (“Yes, this path is the path of paths”. Taoist influence in the works of Vilhelm Ekelund) In this article I show how Taoist philosophy has influenced the Swedish poet, essayist and aphorist Vilhelm Ekelund. I note that the author mentions the Taoist philosophers Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu and discusses their ideas on a couple of occasions in his later works (Atticism – Humanism, 1943; Plus salis–, 1945). Examples of such explicit influence can also be found in Ekelund’s private notebooks, posthumously published in two volumes: Hemkomst och flykt (1972) and Ur en scholaris’ verkstad (1974). I argue that Taoist philosophy implicitly influenced the Swedish author as early as the second part of the 1910’s – when he started to emphasize such principles as moderation, composure, dispassion and non-desire in his writing. I also discuss other important ideals which Ekelund shared with the Taoist philosophers, such as poverty, humility, simplicity and dishonour. Finally, I see a parallel in the anti-intellectual aspects of Taoist thinking and Ekelund’s use of the term misologi (misology), a word which often has positive connotations in his works. In Ekelund’s prose, as well as in the famous Taoist text Tao Te Ching, excessive intellectualism is frequently criticized.

    • Money and myths: An exploration of models of value in early 19th-century literature and texts on economy (Myt och metall. Värdemodeller i litteratur och ekonomisk prosa under tidigt 1800-tal)The main aim of this paper is to show how the concept of money could be treated in literary and in economic writings in the Swedish Age of Romanticism. Three texts — an early poem by Erik Johan Stagnelius and two contemporary essays in economic theory — serve as examples of how, and for which purpose, qualitative and quantitative values could be negotiated in these writings. The study shows that, in the poem, money and profit are treated as inconsistent with such qualitative values as freedom, justice, and joy, whereas the two theoretical essays both make use of different strategies of fictionalization to deal with qualitative and quantitative values in one and the same narration. In this paper, the fictionalization strategies are linked to the para-capitalist approach often to be found in the political and economic theories in the Romantic period. From the perspective of economy-discourse history, an attempt is made to link the two essays to the German economist and philosopher Adam Müller and his Versuche einer neuen Theorie des Geldes (1816).

  • Vad döljer sig i Västerbottens mage? : Om Augustinus och Torgny Lindgrens Minnen
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Samlaren. - 0348-6133 .- 2002-3871. ; 135, s. 5-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

    • Krzysztof Bak, Department of Literature and History of Ideas, Stockholm University, Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures / Section for Swedish Language and Literature, Jagiellonian University, CracowWhat is Hidden in Västerbotten’s Stomach. On Augustine and Torgny Lindgren’s Minnen(Vad döljer sig i Västerbottens mage? Om Augustinus och Torgny Lindgrens Minnen)The article examines the intertextual relation between Torgny Lindgren’s Minnen (2010) and Augustine’s Confessions, from which Lindgren has taken the motto for his memoir. By using the patristic intertext as a starting point, the investigation aims to show how Lindgren has constructed the image of Västerbotten, his home district. The opening part of the article (1)establishes the hermeneutic principles of the study. The second part (2.1–2.4) charts parallels between text and intertext in their portrayal of grace, evil, and man. It emerges that those elements of Lindgren’s worldview which are particularly closely related to Augustinian theology are also the ones that possess a strong Västerbottenian character. The third part of the article (3.1–3.2.3) demonstrates that most of the differences between Minnen and Confessions can be linked to the cultural memory of modernity, which documents the rise and fall of industrial subjectivity. In the fourth part (4.1–4.3), it is argued that Lindgren’s memoir attempts to counteract the crisis of industrial cultural memory by reviving the Augustinian forms of memoria. Within his image of Västerbotten, Lindgren finds adequate metaphorical models for use in his compensatory project of counter-memory. In the concluding part of the article (5) it is observed that, just as Lindgren’s dialogue with Augustine recapitulates the history of Western memory, the memoir’s Västerbotten is elevated to the status of a universal symbol of European consciousness and its fate.

    • Karl Berglund, Department of Literature, Uppsala UniversityMats Dahllöf, Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala UniversityJerry Määttä, Department of Literature, Uppsala UniversityApples and Oranges? Large-Scale Thematic Comparisons of Contemporary Swedish Popular and Literary FictionThe aim of this article is to compare thematic trends in contemporary Swedish bestselling and literary fiction with the help of a computational method—topic modelling—which extracts content themes based on statistical patterns of word usage. This procedure allows us to identify trends and patterns that are not easily discovered through manual reading. We track topics in two subsets of Swedish fiction from the period 2004–2017: 1) prose fiction on the Swedish bestseller charts, and 2) prose fiction shortlisted for the August Prize (arguably the most prestigious Swedish literary prize). The results confirm several assumptions about contemporary popular and literary fiction, such as more plot-focused themes in popular fiction and themes more connected to settings in literary fiction. But the outcomes also provide new, and more surprising knowledge, such as food and economy being the most biased themes among the non-crime fiction bestsellers, whereas themes concerning nature are most biased in the literary realm. Moreover, themes relating to sex, intimacy, and violence are biased towards literary fiction rather than popular fiction. In the light of our findings, we argue that both popular fiction and literary fiction seem to be characterised by certain thematic attributes that make it relevant to discuss them as genres also on a textual-thematic level.

By using the concepts heterotopia and Edutopia as keys for the analysis, an utopian vision of an equal and changeable world appear in the novels. An edutopian vision that concerns both learning and teaching, is in the novels informed by the protagonist’s working-class values, her experiences of ideological reproduction, injustice and resistance in the educational system, as well as her desire to be a leader. Her Edutopia is about learning through endeavor and obtaining different perspectives as well as, through practices of collective learning, teaching students different perspectives of the world from a position equal to them.
