    • We present a number of complete sets of series expansion formulas for neutrino oscillation probabilities in matter of constant density for three flavors. In particular, we study expansions in the mass hierarchy parameter alpha = Deltam(21)(2)/Deltam(31)(2) and mixing parameter s(13) = sin theta(13) up to second order and expansions only in alpha and only in s(13) up to first order. For each type of expansion we also present the corresponding formulas for neutrino oscillations in vacuum. We perform a detailed analysis of the accuracy of the different sets of series expansion formulas and investigate which type of expansion is most accurate in different regions of the parameter space spanned by the neutrino energy E, the baseline length L, and the expansion parameters alpha and s(13). We also present the formulas for series expansions in alpha and in s(13) up to first order for the case of arbitrary matter density profiles. Furthermore, it is shown that in general all the 18 neutrino and antineutrino oscillation probabilities can be expressed through just two independent probabilities.

    • We consider the following two problems: classical domain walls in the = 1* mass deformation of the maximally supersymmetric Yang Mills theory, and D-strings as external magnetic sources in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that they are both described by Nahm's equations with unconventional boundary conditions, and analyze the relevant moduli space of solutions. We argue that general `fuzzy sphere' configurations of D-strings in AdS5 correspond to Wilson-'t Hooft lines in higher representations of the dual SU(n) gauge theory.

    • We study chiral SU(N) supersymmetric gauge theories with matter in the antifundamental and antisymmetric representations. For SU(5) with two families, we show how to reproduce the non-perturbatively generated superpotential, and we discuss dynamical supersymmetry breaking purely in terms of the Konishi anomaly. We apply the same technique in general to SU(N) with one family. We also briefly comment on the chiral ring for these theories.

    • We consider a semiclassical multiwrapped circular string pulsating on S5, whose center of mass has angular momentum J on an S3 subspace. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we argue that the one-loop anomalous dimension of the dual operator is a simple rational function of J/L, where J is the R-charge and L is the bare dimension of the operator. We then reproduce this result directly from a super Yang-Mills computation, where we make use of the integrability of the one-loop system to set up an integral equation that we solve. We then verify the results of Frolov and Tseytlin for circular rotating strings with R-charge assignment (J',J',J). In this case we solve for an integral equation found in the O(−1) matrix model when J'<J and the O(+1) matrix model if J'>J. The latter region starts at J' = L/2 and continues down, but an apparent critical point is reached at J' = 4J. We argue that the critical point is just an artifact of the Bethe ansatz and that the conserved charges of the underlying integrable model are analytic for all J' and that the results from the O(−1) model continue onto the results of the O(+1) model.

    • We consider the scalar operators corresponding to semiclassical string states in AdS5 × S5 with the three angular momenta in S5 non-trivial. The string states recieve quantum corrections and we study the corresponding process on the gauge theory side. The anomalous dimension of the scalar operators is computed using the Bethe ansatz and we find the correction that corresponds to the energy of the quantized string. We restrict for simplicity to the case where two of the angular momenta in S5 are equal.

    • We discuss the AdS/CFT duality from the perspective of integrable systems and establish a direct relationship between the dimension of single trace local operators composed of two types of scalar fields in = 4 super Yang-Mills and the energy of their dual semiclassical string states in AdS5 × S5. The anomalous dimensions can be computed using a set of Bethe equations, which for ``long'' operators reduces to a Riemann-Hilbert problem. We develop a unified approach to the long wavelength Bethe equations, the classical ferromagnet and the classical string solutions in the SU(2) sector and present a general solution, governed by complex curves endowed with meromorphic differentials with integer periods. Using this solution we compute the anomalous dimensions of these long operators up to two loops and demonstrate that they agree with string-theory predictions.

    • We present the exact solution of a scalar field theory defined with noncommuting position and momentum variables. The model describes charged particles in a uniform magnetic field and with an interaction defined by the Groenewold-Moyal star-product. Explicit results are presented for all Green's functions in arbitrary even spacetime dimensionality. Various scaling limits of the field theory are analysed non-perturbatively and the renormalizability of each limit examined. A supersymmetric extension of the field theory is also constructed in which the supersymmetry transformations are parametrized by differential operators in an in finite-dimensional noncommutative algebra.

    • We construct the scalar profile for the non-abelian self dual string connecting two M5-branes compactified on a light-like circle. The construction is based on a conjectured modified version of Nahm's equations describing a D2-brane, with a magnetic field on it, suspended between two D4-branes. Turning on a constant magnetic field on the D2-brane corresponds to a boost in the eleventh direction. In the limit of infinite boost the D4-branes correspond to light-like compactified M5-branes. The solution for the scalar profile of the brane remains finite in this limit and displays all the correct expected features such as smooth interpolation between the unbroken and broken phase with the correct value for the Higgs field at infinity.

    • We consider type-IIB string theory on a seven dimensional orbifold with holonomy in G2. The motivation is to use D1-branes as probes of the geometry. The low energy theory on the D1-brane is a sigma-model with two real supercharges (N = (1,1) in two dimensional language). We study in detail the closed and open string sectors and propose a coupling of the twisted fields to the brane that modifies the vacuum moduli space so that the singularity at the origin is removed. Instead of coming from D-terms, which are not present here, the modification comes from a ``twisted'' mass term for the seven scalar multiplets on the brane. The proposed mechanism involves a generalization of the moment map.

    • We present a new method for matching the two twin-processes gb→H±t and gg→H±tb in Monte Carlo event generators. The matching is done by defining a double-counting term, which is used to generate events that are subtracted from the sum of these two twin-processes. In this way we get a smooth transition between the collinear region of phase space, which is best described by gb→H±t, and the hard region, which requires the use of the gg→H±tb process. The resulting differential distributions show large differences compared to both the gb→H±t and gg→H±tb processes illustrating the necessity to use matching when tagging the accompanying b-jet.

The case of J/ψ and γ to photon + missing energy is calculated in detail, and it is shown that the limit on the compactification scale MS lies at present in the ten GeV range.     • Exact analytical expressions for the ∆S = 1 coupling Im GE in terms of observable spectral functions are given. This coupling determines the size of the ∆I = 3/2 contribution to ε′ . We show analytically how the scheme-dependence and scale dependences vanish to all orders in 1/Nc and NLO in αS explicitly both for Q7 and Q8 . Numerical results are derived for both Q7 and Q8 from the τ-data and known results on the scalar spectral functions. In particular we study the effect of all higher dimension operators. The coefficients of the leading operators in the OPE of the needed correlators are derived to NLO in αS .

    • We present the scattering lengths for the piK processes in the three flavour Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) framework at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The calculation has been performed analytically but we only include analytical results for the dependence on the low-energy constants (LECs) at NNLO due to the size of the expressions. These results, together with resonance estimates of the NNLO LECs are used to obtain constraints on the Zweig rule suppressed LECs at NLO, L-4(r) and L-6(r). Contrary to expectations from NLO order calculations we find them to be compatible with zero. We do a preliminary study of combining the results from pipi scattering, piK scattering and the scalar form-factors and find only a marginal compatibility with all experimental/dispersive input data.

    • We study the electromagnetic form factor of the pion and kaons at low-energies with the use of Chiral Perturbation Theory. The analysis is performed within the three flavour framework and at next-to-next-to-leading order. We explain carefully all the relevant consistency checks on the expressions, present full analytical results for the pion form factor and describe all the assumptions in the analysis. From the phenomenological point of view we make use of our expression and the available data to obtain the charge radius of the pion obtaining [r(2)](V)(pi) = (0.452 +/- 0.013)fm(2), as well as the low-energy constant L-9(r) (m(rho)) = (5.93 +/- 0.43) x 10(3). We also obtain experimental values for 3 combinations of O(p(6)) constants.

  • QCD Short-distance constraints and hadronic approximations

    • This paper discusses a general class of ladder resummation inspired hadronic approximations. It is found that this approach naturally reproduces many successes of single meson per channel saturation models (e.g. VMD) and NJL based models. In particular the existence of a constituent quark mass and a gap equation follows naturally. We construct an approximation that satisfies a large set of QCD short-distance and large N-c constraints and reproduces many hadronic observables. We show how there exists in general a problem between QCD short-distance constraints for Green Functions and those for form factors and cross-sections following from the quark-counting rule. This problem while expected for Green functions that do not vanish in purely perturbative QCD also persists for many Green functions that are order parameters.

    • The scalar form factors for the pions and kaons are calculated in SU(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory at order p(6), in the isospin limit m(u)=m(d)=(m) over cap. We find in general sizable corrections of O(p(6)). We use our results to obtain information on the 1/N-c suppressed low energy constants L-4(r) and L-6(r) as well as on two O(p(6)) low energy constants. We present some numerical results for masses and decay constants as well. We derive a relation for the scalar form factors analogous to Sirlin's relation for vector form factors.

    • We show how the scheme- and scale-dependence of the short-distance operator product expansion with four-quark operators can be correctly accounted for in the framework of the 1/Nc-expansion once the hadronization of two-quark currents has been fixed. We show formulas explicitly in the case of the BK-parameter. We then use them together with our earlier estimates of the long-distance effects. We compare Chiral Perturbation Theory at Leading- and Next-to-Leading-Order with the ENJL model results in the chiral limit. Good matching between the long-and short-distance regimes is obtained and our final value for the physical scheme independent B̂K is 0.77 ± 0.05 ± 0.05.

    • The K → ππ system is analyzed in the chiral limit within the Standard Model. We discuss how to connect the short-distance running in the |ΔS| = 1 case to the matrix-elements calculated in a low-energy approximation in a scheme-independent fashion. We calculate this correction and the resulting Wilson Coefficients. The matrix elements are calculated to next-to-leading order in the 1/Nc expansion and combined with the Wilson coefficients to calculate the two isospin amplitudes and ε′K. The ΔI = 1/2 rule is reproduced within expected errors and we obtain a substantially larger value for ε′K/εK than most other analysises. We discuss the reasons for this difference. We also suggest that the X-boson method is an option for lattice QCD calculations.

    • A model for total cross sections with virtual photons is presented. In particular γ*p and γ*γ* cross sections are considered. Our approach extends on a model for photoproduction, where the total cross section is subdivided into three distinct event classes: direct, VMD and anomalous. With increasing photon virtuality, the latter two decrease in importance. Instead Deep Inelastic Scattering dominates, with the direct class being the script O sign(αs) correction thereof. Hence, the model provides a smooth transition between the two regions. By the breakdown into different event classes, one may aim for a complete picture of all event properties.

    • At small x, the effects of finite transverse momenta of partons inside a hadron become increasingly important, especially in analyses of jets and heavy-quark production. These effects can be systematically accounted for in a formalism based on k(perpendicular to)-factorization and unintegrated distribution functions. We present results for the unintegrated distribution function, together with the corresponding integrated one, obtained within the framework of the Linked Dipole Chain model.     • We present calculations of charm and beauty production at Tevatron within the framework of k(T)-factorization, using the unintegrated gluon distributions as obtained from the Linked Dipole Chain model. The analysis covers transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and the azimuthal correlations between b and (b) over bar quarks (or rather muons from their decay) which are powerful tests for the different unintegrated gluon distributions. We compare the theoretical results with recent experimental data taken by DO and CDF collaborations at the Tevatron Run I and II.

    • We investigate the implication of uncertainties in the unintegrated gluon distribution for the predictions for central exclusive production of scalars at hadron colliders. We use parameterizations of the k(perpendicular to)-unintegrated gluon density obtained from the Linked Dipole Chain model, applying different options for the treatment of non-leading terms. We find that the luminosity function for central exclusive production is very sensitive to details of the transverse momentum distribution of the gluon which, contrary to the k(perpendicular to)-integrated distribution, is not very well constrained experimentally.

    • An algorithm is presented in which the Colour-Dipole Cascade Model as implemented in the Ariadne program is corrected to match the fixed order tree-level matrix elements for e e(+) --> n jets. The result is a full parton level generator for e e(+) annihilation where the generated states are correct on tree-level to fixed order in alpha(s) and to all orders with modified leading logarithmic (MLLA) accuracy. In this paper, matrix elements are used up to second order in alpha(s), but the scheme is applicable also for higher orders. A strategy for also including exact virtual corrections to fixed order is suggested and the possibility to extend the scheme to hadronic collisions is discussed.

    • Recent experimental data have established some of the basic features of multiple interactions in hadron-hadron collisions. The emphasis is therefore now shifting, to one of exploring more detailed aspects. Starting from a brief review of the current situation, a next-generation model is developed, wherein a detailed account is given of correlated flavour, colour, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions, encompassing both the partons initiating perturbative interactions and the partons left in the beam remnants. Some of the main features are illustrated for the Tevatron and the LHC.
