  • Search for a multi-Higgs-boson cascade in W(+)W(-)b(b)over-bar events with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :9, s. UNSP 037-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a search for new particles in events with one lepton (electron or muon) and missing transverse momentum using 20.3 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed. A W' with Sequential Standard Model couplings is excluded at the 95% confidence level for masses up to 3.24 TeV. Excited chiral bosons (W*) with equivalent coupling strengths are excluded for masses up to 3.21 TeV. In the framework of an effective field theory limits are also set on the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross-section as well as the mass scale M-* of the unknown mediating interaction for dark matter pair production in association with a leptonically decaying W.

  • Probing neutrino oscillation parameters using high power superbeam from ESS
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :12, s. 020-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A high-power neutrino superbeam experiment at the ESS facility has been proposed such that the source-detector distance falls at the second oscillation maximum, giving very good sensitivity towards establishing CP violation. In this work, we explore the comparative physics reach of the experiment in terms of leptonic CP-violation, precision on atmospheric parameters, non-maximal theta(23), and its octant for a variety of choices for the baselines. We also vary the neutrino vs. the anti-neutrino running time for the beam, and study its impact on the physics goals of the experiment. We find that for the determination of CP violation, 540 km baseline with 7 years of nu and 3 years of (v) over bar (7v + 3 (v) over bar) run-plan performs the best and one expects a 5 sigma sensitivity to CP violation for 48% of true values of delta (CP). The projected reach for the 200 km baseline with 7v + 3 (v) over bar run-plan is somewhat worse with 5 sigma sensitivity for 34% of true values of delta(CP). On the other hand, for the discovery of a non-maximal theta(23) and its octant, the 200 km baseline option with run-plan performs significantly better than the other baselines. A 5 sigma determination of a non-maximal theta(23) can be made if the true value of sin(2) theta(23) less than or similar to 0.45 or sin(2) theta(23) greater than or similar to 0.57. The octant of theta(23) could be resolved at 5 sigma if the true value of sin(2) theta(23) less than or similar to 0.43 or greater than or similar to 0.59, irrespective of delta(CP).

  • A Profile Likelihood Analysis of the Constrained MSSM with Genetic Algorithms
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :4, s. 057-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) is one of the simplest and most widely-studied supersymmetric extensions to the standard model of particle physics. Nevertheless, current data do not sufficiently constrain the model parameters in a way completely independent of priors, statistical measures and scanning techniques. We present a new technique for scanning supersymmetric parameter spaces, optimised for frequentist profile likelihood analyses and based on Genetic Algorithms. We apply this technique to the CMSSM, taking into account existing collider and cosmological data in our global fit. We compare our method to the MultiNest algorithm, an efficient Bayesian technique, paying particular attention to the best-fit points and implications for particle masses at the LHC and dark matter searches. Our global best-fit point lies in the focus point region. We find many high-likelihood points in both the stau co-annihilation and focus point regions, including a previously neglected section of the co-annihilation region at large m 0. We show that there are many high-likelihood points in the CMSSM parameter space commonly missed by existing scanning techniques, especially at high masses. This has a significant influence on the derived confidence regions for parameters and observables, and can dramatically change the entire statistical inference of such scans.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2011:12, s. 027-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When formulated in twistor space, the D-instanton corrected hypermultiplet moduli space in N=2 string vacua and the Coulomb branch of rigid N=2 gauge theories on R^3 x S^1 are strikingly similar and, to a large extent, dictated by consistency with wall-crossing. We elucidate this similarity by showing that these two spaces are related under a general duality between, on one hand, quaternion-Kahler manifolds with a quaternionic isometry and, on the other hand, hyperkahler manifolds with a rotational isometry, further equipped with a hyperholomorphic circle bundle with a connection. We show that the transition functions of the hyperholomorphic circle bundle relevant for the hypermultiplet moduli space are given by the Rogers dilogarithm function, and that consistency across walls of marginal stability is ensured by the motivic wall-crossing formula of Kontsevich and Soibelman. We illustrate the construction on some simple examples of wall-crossing related to cluster algebras for rank 2 Dynkin quivers. In an appendix we also provide a detailed discussion on the general relation between wall-crossing and the theory of cluster algebras.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2013:2, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, we consider a topologically twisted version of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in five dimensions which was introduced by Witten in 2011. We consider this theory on a five manifold of the form M-4 x I for M-4 an oriented Riemannian four manifold. The complete and unique action of the theory in bulk is written down and is shown to be invariant under two scalar supersymmetries.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 1409:9, s. Art. no. 021-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When mass-deformed ABJM theory is considered on S(3), the partition function of the theory localises and is given by a matrix model. We solve this model at large-N in the decompactification limit, where the radius of the three-sphere is taken to infinity. In this limit, the theory exhibits a rich phase structure with an infinite number of third-order quantum phase transitions accumulating at strong coupling.

  • The trouble with twisting (2,0) theory
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2014:3, s. Art. no. 062-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a twisted version of the abelian (2,0) theory placed upon a Lorenzian six-manifold with a product structure, M_6=C×M_4. This is done by an investigation of the free tensor multiplet on the level of equations of motion, where the problem of its formulation in Euclidean signature is circumvented by letting the time-like direction lie in the two-manifold C and performing a topological twist along M_4 alone. A compactification on C is shown to be necessary to enable the possibility of finding a topological field theory. The hypothetical twist along a Euclidean C is argued to amount to the correct choice of linear combination of the two supercharges scalar on M_4. It may be slightly surprising that this is not the same linear combination as in the well known Donaldson-Witten twist. A more surprising fact however, is that this twisted theory contains no Q-exact and covariantly conserved stress tensor unless M_4 has vanishing curvature. This is to our knowledge a phenomenon which has not been observed before in topological field theories. In the literature, the setup of the twisting used here has been suggested as the origin of the conjectured AGT-correspondence, and our hope is that this work may somehow contribute to the understanding of it.

  • Tunneling solutions in topological field theory on R x S-3 x I
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2012:2, s. Article Number: 063-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a topologically twisted version, recently introduced by Witten, of five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a five-manifold of the form M-5 = RxW(3)xI. If the length of the interval I is sufficiently large, the supersymmetric localization equations admit pairs of static solutions (with the factor R interpreted as Euclidean time). However, these solutions disappear for a sufficiently short I, so by the topological invariance of the theory, they must be connected by an interpolating dynamic instanton solution. We study this for the case that W-3 is a three-sphere S-3 with the standard metric by making a spherically symmetric Ansatz for all fields. The solution is given as a power series in a parameter related to the length of I, and we give explicit expressions for the first non-trivial terms.

  • New physics searches at near detectors of neutrino oscillation experiments
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We systematically investigate the prospects of testing new physics with tau sensitive near detectors at neutrino oscillation facilities. For neutrino beams from pion decay, from the decay of radioactive ions, as well as from the decays of muons in a storage ring at a neutrino factory, we discuss which effective operators can lead to new physics effects. Furthermore, we discuss the present bounds on such operators set by other experimental data currently available. For operators with two leptons and two quarks we present the first complete analysis including all relevant operators simultaneously and performing a Markov Chain Monte Carlo fit to the data. We find that these effects can induce tau neutrino appearance probabilities as large as O(10(-4)), which are within reach of forthcoming experiments. We highlight to which kind of new physics a tau sensitive near detector would be most sensitive.

  • Non-unitary Leptonic Mixing and Leptogenesis
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the relation between non-unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix and leptogenesis. We discuss how all parameters of the canonical type-I seesaw mechanism can, in principle, be reconstructed from the neutrino mass matrix and the deviation of the effective low-energy leptonic mixing matrix from unitary. When the mass M' of the lightest right-handed neutrino is much lighter than the masses of the others, we show that its decay asymmetries within flavour-dependent leptogenesis can be expressed in terms of two contributions, one depending on the unique dimension five (d = 5) operator generating neutrino masses and one depending on the dimension six (d = 6) operator associated with non-unitarity. In low-energy seesaw scenarios where small lepton number violation explains the smallness of neutrino masses, the lepton number conserving d = 6 operator contribution generically dominates over the d = 5 operator contribution which results in a strong enhancement of the flavour-dependent decay asymmetries without any resonance effects. To calculate the produced final baryon asymmetry, the flavour equilibration effects directly related to non-unitarity have to be taken into account. In a simple realization of this non-unitarity driven leptogenesis, the lower bound on M' is found to be about 10(8) GeV at the onset of the strong washout regime, more than one order of magnitude below the bound in "standard" thermal leptogenesis.

  • Collider signatures of goldstini in gauge mediation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2012:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the collider signatures of the multiple goldstini scenario in the framework of gauge mediation. This class of models is characterized by a visible sector (e.g. the MSSM or any extension) coupled by gauge interactions to more than one SUSY breaking sector. The spectrum consists of a light gravitino LSP, behaving as a goldstino, and a number of neutral fermions (the pseudo-goldstini) with a mass between that of the LSP and that of the lightest particle of the observable sector (LOSP). We consider the two situations where the LOSP is either a gaugino-like neutralino or a stau and we assume only one pseudo-goldstino of a mass of O(100) GeV. The coupling of the LOSP to the pseudo-goldstino can be enhanced with respect to those of the gravitino giving rise to characteristic signatures. We show that the decay modes of the LOSP into a SM particle and a pseudo-goldstino can be significant. For both LOSP scenarios we analyze (pseudo)-goldstini production at colliders. Compared to standard gauge mediation the final state spectrum is softer and more structured.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :11, s. 123-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the giant graviton solution as the AdS(5) x S-5 background is heated up to finite temperature. The analysis employs the thermal brane probe technique based on the blackfold approach. We focus mainly on the thermal giant graviton corresponding to a thermal D3-brane probe wrapped on an S-3 moving on the S-5 of the background at finite temperature. We find several interesting new effects, including that the thermal giant graviton has a minimal possible value for the angular momentum and correspondingly also a minimal possible radius of the S-3. We compute the free energy of the thermal giant graviton in the low temperature regime, which potentially could be compared to that of a thermal state on the gauge theory side. Moreover, we analyze the space of solutions and stability of the thermal giant graviton and find that, in parallel with the extremal case, there are two available solutions for a given temperature and angular momentum, one stable and one unstable. In order to write down the equations of motion, action and conserved charges for the thermal giant graviton we present a slight generalization of the blackfold formalism for charged black branes. Finally, we also briefly consider the thermal giant graviton moving in the AdS(5) part.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :11, s. 122-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study superstrings on AdS 3 times S 3 times T 4 supported by a combination of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz three form fluxes, and write down a set of finite-gap equations that describe the massive part of the classical string spectrum. Using the recently proposed all-loop S-matrix we write down the all-loop Bethe ansatz equations for the massive sector. In the thermodynamic limit the Bethe ansatz reproduces the finite-gap equations. As part of this derivation we propose expressions for the leading order dressing phases. These phases differ from the well-known Arutyunov-Frolov-Staudacher phase that appears in the pure Ramond-Ramond case. We also consider the one-loop quantisation of the algebraic curve and determine the one-loop corrections to the dressing phases. Finally we consider some classical string solutions including finite size giant magnons and circular strings.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :3, s. 058-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the AdS(3)/CFT2 correspondence for theories with 16 supercharges using the integrability approach. We construct Green-Schwarz actions for Type IIB strings on AdS(3) x S-3 x M-4 where M-4 = T-4 or S-3 x S-1 using the coset approach. These actions are based on a Z(4) automorphism of the super-coset D(2, 1; alpha) x D(2, 1; alpha)/SO(1, 2) x SO(3) x SO(3). The equations of motion admit a representation in terms of a Lax connection, showing that the system is classically integrable. We present the finite gap equations for these actions. When alpha = 0, 1/2, 1 we propose a set of quantum Bethe equations valid at all values of the coupling. The AdS(3)/CFT2 duals contain novel massless modes whose role remains to be explored.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :1, s. 119-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a measurement of eta meson production in photon-photon interactions produced by electron-positron beams colliding with root s = 1 GeV. The measurement is done with the KLOE detector at the phi-factory DA Phi NE with an integrated luminosity of 0.24 fb(-1). The e(+)e(-) -> e(+)e(-)eta cross section is measured without detecting the outgoing electron and positron, selecting the decays eta -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and eta -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0). The most relevant background is due to e(+)e(-) -> eta gamma when the monochromatic photon escapes detection. The cross section for this process is measured as sigma(e(+)e(-) -> eta gamma) = (856 +/- 8(stat) +/- 16(syst)) pb. The combined result for the e(+)e(-) -> e(+)e(-)eta cross section is sigma(e(+)e(-) -> e(+)e(-)eta) = (32.72 +/- 1.27(stat) +/- 0.70(syst)) pb. From this we derive the partial width Gamma(eta -> gamma gamma) = (520 +/- 20(stat) +/- 13(syst)) eV. This is in agreement with the world average and is the most precise measurement to date.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :10, s. 082-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sudden injection of energy in a strongly coupled conformal field theory and its subsequent thermalization can be holographically modeled by a shell falling into anti-de Sitter space and forming a black brane. For a homogeneous shell, Bhattacharyya and Minwalla were able to study this process analytically using a weak field approximation. Motivated by event-by-event fluctuations in heavy ion collisions, we include inhomogeneities in this model, obtaining analytic results in a long wavelength expansion. In the early-time window in which our approximations can be trusted, the resulting evolution matches well with that of a simple free streaming model. Near the end of this time window, we find that the stress tensor approaches that of second-order viscous hydrodynamics. We comment on possible lessons for heavy ion phenomenology.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we explore the duality between the low energy effective theory of five-dimensional N = 1 SU(N)(M-1) and SU(M)(N-1) linear quiver gauge theories compactified on S-1. The theories we study are the five-dimensional uplifts of four-dimensional superconformal linear quivers. We study this duality by comparing the Seiberg-Witten curves and the Nekrasov partition functions of the two dual theories. The Seiberg-Witten curves are obtained by minimizing the worldvolume of an M5-brane with nontrivial geometry. Nekrasov partition functions are computed using topological string theory. The result of our study is a map between the gauge theory parameters, i.e., Coulomb moduli, masses and UV coupling constants, of the two dual theories. Apart from the obvious physical interest, this duality also leads to compelling mathematical identities. Through the AGTW conjecture these five-dimentional gauge theories are related to q-deformed Liouville and Toda SCFTs in two-dimensions. The duality we study implies the relations between Liouville and Toda correlation functions through the map we derive.

We check the validity of our procedure by comparing to known results for three chiral primaries. We then compute the three-point functions for any combination of chiral and non-chiral primaries, with the non-chiral primaries all dual to string states at the first massive level. Along the way we find many cancellations that leave us with simple expressions, suggesting that integrability is playing an important role.

    • We explore the room for possible deviations from the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson coupling structure in a systematic study of Higgs coupling scale factor (kappa) benchmark scenarios using the latest signal rate measurements from the Tevatron and LHC experiments. We employ chi(2) fits performed with HiggsSignals, which takes into account detailed information on signal efficiencies and major correlations of theoretical and experimental uncertainties. All considered scenarios allow for additional non-standard Higgs boson decay modes, and various assumptions for constraining the total decay width are discussed. No significant deviations from the SM Higgs boson coupling structure are found in any of the investigated benchmark scenarios. We derive upper limits on an additional (undetectable) Higgs decay mode under the assumption that the Higgs couplings to weak gauge bosons do not exceed the SM prediction. We furthermore discuss the capabilities of future facilities for probing deviations from the SM Higgs couplings, comparing the high luminosity upgrade of the LHC with a future International Linear Collider (ILC), where for the latter various energy and luminosity scenarios are considered. At the ILC model-independent measurements of the coupling structure can be performed, and we provide estimates of the precision that can be achieved.

    • The maximal algebra of symmetries of the free single-particle Schrodinger equation is determined and its relevance for the holographic duality in non-relativistic Fermi systems is investigated. This algebra of symmetries is an infinite dimensional extension of the Schrodinger algebra, it is isomorphic to the Weyl algebra of quantum observables, and it may be interpreted as a non-relativistic higher-spin algebra. The associated infinite collection of Noether currents bilinear in the fermions are derived from their relativistic counterparts via a light-like dimensional reduction. The minimal coupling of these currents to background sources is rewritten in a compact way by making use of Weyl quantisation. Pushing forward the similarities with the holographic correspondence between the minimal higher-spin gravity and the critical O(N) model, a putative bulk dual of the unitary and the ideal Fermi gases is briefly discussed.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 9:105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is based on a curious observation about an equation related to the tracelessness constraints of higher spin gauge fields. A similar equation also occurs in the theory of continuous spin representations of the Poincaré group. Expressed in an oscillator basis for the higher spin fields, the equation becomes a non-linear partial differential operator of the Riccati type acting on the vertex functions. The consequences of the equation for the cubic vertex is investigated in the light-front formulation of higher spin theory. The vertex is fixed by the PDE up to a set of terms that can be considered as boundary data for the PDE. These terms can serve as off-shell quantum corrections. In order to set the present work in perspective, some comments and comparisons to recent research on higher spin interactions are made. A few particular cubic vertices are calculated explicitly and compared to similar results in the literature, in particular the interesting cases 2 ÿ 3 ÿ 3 and 3 ÿ 2 ÿ 2 involving spin 2 fields.

    • Some puzzling aspects of higher spin field theory in Minkowski space-time, such as the tracelessness constraints and the search for an underlying physical principle, are discussed. A connecting idea might be provided by the recently much researched continuous spin representations of the Poincaré group. The Wigner equations, treated as first class constraints, yields to a four-constraint BRST formulation. The resulting field theory, generalizing free higher spin field theory, is one among a set of higher spin theories that can be related to previous work on unconstrained formulations. In particular, it is conjectured that the unconstrained higher spin theory of Francia and Sagnotti is a limit of a continuous spin theory. Furthermore, a simple analysis of the constraint structure reveals a hint of a physical rationale behind the trace constraints.

    • In this paper we discuss gravity in the light-front formulation (light-cone gauge) and show how possible counterterms arise. We find that Poincare invariance is not enough to find the three-point counterterms uniquely. Higher-spin fields can intrude and mimic three-point higher derivative gravity terms. To select the correct term we have to use the remaining reparametrization invariance that exists after the gauge choice. We finally sketch how the corresponding programme for N=8 Supergravity should work.

    • We evaluate string one-loop contributions to the Kahler metric of D-brane moduli (positions and Wilson lines), in toroidal orientifolds with branes at angles. Contributions due to bulk states in the loop are known, so we focus on the contributions due to states localized at intersections of orientifold images. We show that these quantum corrections vanish. This does not follow from the usual nonrenormalization theorems of supersymmetric field theory.

    • We study the mediation of supersymmetry breaking in string compactifications whose moduli are stabilized by nonperturbative effects. We begin with a critical review of arguments for sequestering in supergravity and in string theory. We then show that geometric isolation, even in a highly warped space, is insufficient to achieve sequestering: in type IIB compactifications, nonperturbative superpotentials involving the Kahler moduli introduce cross-couplings between well-separated visible and hidden sectors. The scale of the resulting soft terms depends on the moduli stabilization scenario. In the Large Volume Scenario, nonperturbative superpotential contributions to the soft trilinear A terms can introduce significant flavor violation, while in KKLT compactifications their effects are negligible. In both scenarios, the contributions to the mu and B mu parameters cannot be ignored in general. We conclude that sequestered supersymmetry breaking is possible in nonperturbatively-stabilized compactifications only if a mechanism in addition to bulk locality suppresses superpotential cross-couplings.

    • Non-perturbative superpotential cross-couplings between visible sector matter and Kähler moduli can lead to significant flavour-changing neutral currents in compactifications of type IIB string theory. Here, we compute corrections to Yukawa couplings in orbifold models with chiral matter localised on D3-branes and non-perturbative effects on distant D7-branes. By evaluating a threshold correction to the D7-brane gauge coupling, we determine conditions under which the non-perturbative corrections to the Yukawa couplings appear. The flavour structure of the induced Yukawa coupling generically fails to be aligned with the tree-level flavour structure. We check our results by also evaluating a correlation function of two D7-brane gauginos and a D3-brane Yukawa coupling. Finally, by calculating a string amplitude between n hidden scalars and visible matter we show how non-vanishing vacuum expectation values of distant D7-brane scalars, if present, may correct visible Yukawa couplings with a flavour structure that differs from the tree-level flavour structure.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the Bayesian method for evaluating the evidence for a non-zero value of the leptonic mixing angle theta(13) and CP-violation in neutrino oscillation experiments. This is an application of the well-established method of Bayesian model selection, of which we give a concise and pedagogical overview. When comparing the hypothesis theta(13) = 0 with hypotheses where theta(13) > 0 using global data but excluding the recent reactor measurements, we obtain only a weak preference for a non-zero theta(13), even though the significance is over 3 sigma. We then add the reactor measurements one by one and show how the evidence for theta(13) > 0 quickly increases. When including the DOUBLE CHOOZ, DAYA BAY, and RENO data, the evidence becomes overwhelming with a posterior probability of the hypothesis theta(13) = 0 below 10(-11). Owing to the small amount of information on the CP-phase delta, very similar evidences are obtained for the CP-conserving and CP-violating hypotheses. Hence, there is, not unexpectedly, neither evidence for nor against leptonic CP-violation. However, when future experiments aiming to search for CP-violation have started taking data, this question will be of great importance and the method described here can be used as an important complement to standard analyses.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :2, s. 093-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We perform a global fit of the most relevant neutrinoless double beta decay experiments within the standard model with massive Majorana neutrinos. Using Bayesian inference makes it possible to take into account the theoretical uncertainties on the nuclear matrix elements in a fully consistent way. First, we analyze the data used to claim the observation of neutrinoless double beta decay in Ge-76, and find strong evidence (according to Jeffrey's scale) for a peak in the spectrum and moderate evidence for that the peak is actually close to the energy expected for the neutrinoless decay. We also find a significantly larger statistical error than the original analysis, which we include in the comparison with other data. Then, we statistically test the consistency between this claim with that of recent measurements using Xe-136. We find that the two data sets are about 40 to 80 times more probable under the assumption that they are inconsistent, depending on the nuclear matrix element uncertainties and the prior on the smallest neutrino mass. Hence, there is moderate to strong evidence of incompatibility, and for equal prior probabilities the posterior probability of compatibility is between 1.3% and 2.5%. If one, despite such evidence for incompatibility, combines the two data sets, we find that the total evidence of neutrinoless double beta decay is negligible. If one ignores the claim, there is weak evidence against the existence of the decay. We also perform approximate frequentist tests of compatibility for fixed ratios of the nuclear matrix elements, as well as of the no signal hypothesis. Generalization to other sets of experiments as well as other mechanisms mediating the decay is possible.

    • We investigate numerically how accurately one could constrain the strengths of different short-range contributions to neutrino-less double beta decay in effective field theory. Depending on the outcome of near-future experiments yielding information on the neutrino masses, the corresponding bounds or estimates can be stronger or weaker. A particularly interesting case, resulting in strong bounds, would be a positive signal of neutrino-less double beta decay that is consistent with complementary information from neutrino oscillation experiments, kinematical determinations of the neutrino mass, and measurements of the sum of light neutrino masses from cosmological observations. The keys to more robust bounds are improvements of the knowledge of the nuclear physics involved and a better experimental accuracy.

    • We consider the concept of a generalised manifold in the O(d,d) setting, i.e., in double geometry. The conjecture by Hohm and Zwiebach for the form of finite generalised diffeomorphisms is shown to hold. Transition functions on overlaps are defined. Triple overlaps are trivial concerning their action on coordinates, but non-trivial on fields, including the generalised metric. A generalised manifold is an ordinary manifold, but the generalised metric on the manifold carries a gerbe structure. We show how the abelian behaviour of the gerbe is embedded in the non-abelian T-duality group. We also comment on possibilities and difficulties in the U-duality setting.

    • We investigate the generalised diffeomorphisms in M-theory, which are gauge transformations unifying diffeomorphisms and tensor gauge transformations. After giving an En(n)-covariant description of the gauge transformations and their commutators, we show that the gauge algebra is infinitely reducible, i.e., the tower of ghosts for ghosts is infinite. The Jacobiator of generalised diffeomorphisms gives such a reducibility transformation. We give a concrete description of the ghost structure, and demonstrate that the infinite sums give the correct (regularised) number of degrees of freedom. The ghost towers belong to the sequences of rep- resentations previously observed appearing in tensor hierarchies and Borcherds algebras. All calculations rely on the section condition, which we reformulate as a linear condition on the cotangent directions. The analysis holds for n

    • We propose a statistical mechanical derivation of Kithler-Einstein metrics, i.e. solutions to Einstein's vacuum field equations in Euclidean signature (with a cosmological constant) on a compact Kahler manifold X. The microscopic theory is given by a canonical free fermion gas on X whose one-particle states are pluricanonical holomorphic sections on X (coinciding with higher spin states in the case of a Riemann surface) defined in background free manner. A heuristic, but hopefully physically illuminating, argument for the convergence in the thermodynamical (large N) limit is given, based on a recent mathematically rigorous result about exponentially small fluctuation's of Slater determinants. Relations to higher-dimensional effective bosonization, the Yau-Tian-Donaldson program in Kahler geometry and quantum gravity are explored. The precise mathematical details will be investigated elsewhere.

    • We will provide an interesting new mechanism to generate almost scale invariant seed density perturbations with a red spectrum, while keeping the gravitational wave spectrum blue-tilted in a stringy thermal contracting phase at temperatures beyond the Hagedorn temperature. This phase is often referred to as the Hagedorn phase where the free energy has been conjectured by Atick and Witten to grow more slowly than ordinary radiation. The primordial fluctuations are created by the statistical thermal fluctuations determined by the partition function, rather than quantum vacuum driven fluid dynamical fluctuations. Our mechanism assumes a non-singular bounce.

Using a well motivated compactification Ansatz on SU(3)-structure manifolds with 19 undetermined parameters we demonstrate that this is not the case in ordinary IIA supergravity, thereby generalising previous nogo results in different ways. On the other hand, for IIA* we construct explicit cosmological Lifshitz solutions. We also consider solutions with non-constant scalars and are able to find simple static and cosmological Lifshitz solutions in IIB* supergravity and a Euclidean Lifshitz solution in ordinary Euclidean IIB supergravity, which is similar to a non-extremal deformation of the D-instanton. The latter solutions have z = -2.

    • We discuss aidnogenesis,(1) i.e. the generation of a dark matter asymmetry, via new sphaleron processes associated to an extra non-abelian gauge symmetry common to both the visible and the dark sectors. Such a theory can naturally produce an abundance of asymmetric dark matter which is of the same size as the lepton and baryon asymmetries, as suggested by the similar sizes of the observed baryonic and dark matter energy content, and provide a definite prediction for the mass of the dark matter particle. We discuss in detail a minimal realization in which the Standard Model is only extended by dark matter fermions which form "dark baryons" through an SU(3) interaction, and a (broken) horizontal symmetry that induces the new sphalerons. The dark matter mass is predicted to be similar to 6GeV, close to the region favored by DAMA and CoGeNT. Furthermore, a remnant of the horizontal symmetry should be broken at a lower scale and can also explain the Tevatron dimuon anomaly.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relatively large measured value of θ 13 has opened various possibilities to determine the neutrino mass ordering, among them using PINGU, the low-energy extension of the IceCube neutrino telescope, to observe matter effects in atmospheric neutrinos, or a high statistics measurement of the neutrino energy spectrum at a reactor neutrino experiment with a baseline of around 60 km, such as the Daya Bay II project. In this work we point out a synergy between these two approaches based on the fact that when data are analysed with the wrong neutrino mass ordering the best fit occurs at different values of varDelta m 312 for PINGU and Daya Bay II. Hence, the wrong mass ordering can be excluded by a mismatch of the values inferred for varDelta m 312, thanks to the excellent accuracy for varDelta m 312 of both experiments. We perform numerical studies of PINGU and Daya Bay II sensitivities and show that the synergy effect may lead to a high significance determination of the mass ordering even in situations where the 3individual experiments obtain only poor sensitivity.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We evaluate the probability of future neutrino oscillation facilities to discover leptonic CP violation and/or measure the neutrino mass hierarchy. We study how this probability is affected by positive or negative hints for these observables to be found at T2K and NO nu A. We consider the following facilities: LBNE; T2HK; and the 10 GeV Neutrino Factory (NF10), and show how their discovery probabilities change with the running time of T2K and NO nu A conditioned to their results. We find that, if after 15 years T2K and NO nu A have not observed a 90% CL hint of CP violation, then LBNE and T2HK have less than a 10% chance of achieving a 5 sigma discovery, whereas NF10 still has a similar to 40% chance to do so. Conversely, if T2K and NO nu A have an early 90% CL hint in 5 years from now, T2HK has a rather large chance to achieve a 5 sigma CP violation discovery (75% or 55%, depending on whether the mass hierarchy is known or not). This is to be compared with the 90% (30%) probability that NF10 (LBNE) would have to observe the same signal at 5 sigma. A hierarchy measurement at 5 sigma is achievable at both LBNE and NF10 with more than 90% probability, irrespectively of the outcome of T2K and NO nu A. We also find that if LBNE or a similar very long baseline super-beam is the only next generation facility to be built, then it is very useful to continue running T2K and NO nu A (or at least T2K) beyond their original schedule in order to increase the CP violation discovery chances, given their complementarity.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  We study the general phenomenology of neutrinoless double beta decay in seesaw models. In particular, we focus on the dependence of the neutrinoless double beta decay rate on the mass of the extra states introduced to account for the Majorana masses of light neutrinos. For this purpose, we compute the nuclear matrix elements as functions of the mass of the mediating fermions and estimate the associated uncertainties. We then discuss what can be inferred on the seesaw model parameters in the different mass regimes and clarify how the contribution of the light neutrinos should always be taken into account when deriving bounds on the extra parameters. Conversely, the extra states can also have a significant impact, canceling the Standard Model neutrino contribution for masses lighter than the nuclear scale and leading to unobservable neutrinoless double beta decay amplitudes even if neutrinos are Majorana particles. In particular, the decay rate is reduced by at least six orders of magnitude for masses of the extra states below 1MeV in absence of extra contributions. We also discuss how seesaw models could reconcile large rates of neutrinoless double beta decay with more stringent cosmological bounds on neutrino masses.

    • Determining the type of the neutrino mass ordering ( normal versus inverted) is one of the most important open questions in neutrino physics. In this paper we clarify the statistical interpretation of sensitivity calculations for this measurement. We employ standard frequentist methods of hypothesis testing in order to precisely define terms like the median sensitivity of an experiment. We consider a test statistic T which in a certain limit will be normal distributed. We show that the median sensitivity in this limit is very close to standard sensitivities based on Delta chi(2) values from a data set without statistical fluctuations, such as widely used in the literature. Furthermore, we perform an explicit Monte Carlo simulation of the INO, JUNO, LBNE, NO nu A, and PINGU experiments in order to verify the validity of the Gaussian limit, and provide a comparison of the expected sensitivities for those experiments.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer-Verlag. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 2011:04, s. 052-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the renormalization group (RG) running of the neutrino masses and the leptonic mixing parameters in two different extra-dimensional models, namely, the Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) model and a model, where the Standard Model (SM) bosons probe an extra dimension and the SM fermions are confined to a four-dimensional brane. In particular, we derive the beta function for the neutrino mass operator in the UED model. We also rederive the beta function for the charged-lepton Yukawa coupling, and confirm some of the existing results in the literature. The generic features of the RG running of the neutrino parameters within the two models are analyzed and, in particular, we observe a power-law behavior for the running. We note that the running of the leptonic mixing angle theta(12) can be sizable, while the running of theta(23) and theta(13) is always negligible. In addition, we show that the tri-bimaximal and the bimaximal mixing patterns at a high-energy scale are compatible with low-energy experimental data, while a tri-small mixing pattern is not. Finally, we perform a numerical scan over the low-energy parameter space to infer the high-energy distribution of the parameters. Using this scan, we also demonstrate how the high-energy theta(12) is correlated with the smallest neutrino mass and the Majorana phases.

    •  The ESSνSB project is a proposed neutrino oscillation experiment based on the European Spallation Source with the search for leptonic CP violation as its main aim. In this letter we show that a near detector at around 1 km distance from the beamline is not only very desirable for keeping the systematic errors affecting the CP search under control, but would also provide a significant sensitivity probe for sterile neutrino oscillations in the region of the parameter space favored by the long-standing LSND anomaly. We find that the effective mixing angle θμe can be probed down to sin2(2θμe) ≃ 2(8) · 10−3 at 5σ assuming 15% bin-to-bin (un)correlated systematics.
