  • Doctors' and nurses' views on patient care for type 2 diabetes : an interview study in primary health care in Oman
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Primary Health Care Research and Development. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1463-4236 .- 1477-1128. ; 14:3, s. 258-269
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: This study aimed at exploring the experiences of primary health-care providers of their encounters with patients with type 2 diabetes, and their preferences and suggestions for future improvement of diabetes care. Background: Barriers to good diabetes care could be related to problems from health-care providers' side, patients' side or the healthcare system of the country. Treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes has become a huge challenge in Oman, where the prevalence has increased to high levels. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 health-care professionals, 19 doctors and seven nurses, who worked in primary health care in Oman. Qualitative content analysis was applied. Findings: Organizational barriers and barriers related to patients and healthcare providers were identified. These included workload and lack of teamwork approach. Poor patients' management adherence and influence of culture on their attitudes towards illness were identified. From the providers' side, language barriers, providers' frustration and aggressive attitudes towards the patients were reflected. Decreasing the workload, availability of competent teams with diabetes specialist nurses and continuity of care were suggested. Furthermore, changing professional behaviours towards a more patient-centred approach and need for health education to the patients, especially on self-management, were addressed. Appropriate training for health-care providers in communication skills with emphasis on self-care education and individualization of care according to each patient's needs are important for improvement of diabetes care in Oman.

  • County Differences in Mortality among Foreign-Born Compared to Native Swedes 1970-1999
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nursing Research and Practice. - New York, NY, USA : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 2090-1429 .- 2090-1437. ; 2012, s. Article ID 136581-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Regional variations in mortality and morbidity have been shown in Europe and USA. Longitudinal studies have found increased mortality, dissimilarities in mortality pattern, and differences in utilization of healthcare between foreign- and native-born Swedes. No study has been found comparing mortality among foreign-born and native-born Swedes in relation to catchment areas/counties. Methods. The aim was to describe and compare mortality among foreign-born persons and native Swedes during 1970–1999 in 24 counties in Sweden. Data from the Statistics Sweden and the National Board of Health and Welfare was used, and the database consisted of 723,948 persons, 361,974 foreign-born living in Sweden in 1970 and aged 16 years and above and 361,974 matched Swedish controls. Results. Latest county of residence independently explained higher mortality among foreign-born persons in all but four counties; OR varied from 1.01 to 1.29. Counties with a more rural structure showed the highest differences between foreign-born persons and native controls. Foreign-born persons had a lower mean age (1.0–4.3 years) at time of death. Conclusion. County of residence influences mortality; higher mortality is indicated among migrants than native Swedes in counties with a more rural structure. Further studies are needed to explore possible explanations.

  • Early detection of plant diseases based on molecular methods and spore traps
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Several fungal plant pathogens are dispersed by wind. The aim of this project was to determine the best sampling strategy for detection of air-borne plant pathogens, as well as to determine which species are present during different time periods. This was done by collection of air samples during the growing seasons of 2010 and 2011 (May – September), in the four main plant production areas of southern Sweden. The spore samples were collected using two types of spore traps, one active trap and one passive funnel trap. DNA was extracted from each sample and the fungal community was studied based on the ITS region, by applying the 454-sequencing technique. Information from the molecular analysis was compared to reports of disease development in the field crops in the surroundings of the respective spore traps. The results from this study could be used to develop a prediction system, which potentially could be an important tool in disease forecasting and fungicide management.

  • Pollination by nectar-foraging pompilid wasps: a new specialized pollination strategy for the Australian flora
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Plant Biology. - : Wiley. - 1435-8603 .- 1438-8677. ; 23, s. 702-710
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Pompilidae is a cosmopolitan and diverse group of wasps, which commonly feed on nectar. However, pollination systems specialized on pompilids have not been documented in detail outside of southern Africa. Here, we studied Caladenia drummondii (Orchidaceae) where, based on floral traits and preliminary field observations, we predicted pollination by sexual deception of male pompilid wasps. Detailed pollinator observations were undertaken using floral baiting experiments at sites spanning 375 km. Following evidence for nectar on some flowers of C. drummondii, the sugar content on the labellum was analysed by GC-MS. Floral spectral reflectance was measured and compared with Caladenia using other pollination strategies. Males of a single species of pompilid wasp (Calopompilus sp.) were the only visitors capable of pollinating C. drummondii. Attempts to feed from the surface of the labellum were frequent and were associated with removal and deposition of pollinia. GC-MS analysis revealed larger quantities of sugar on the labellum than reported in other Caladenia species. While no sexual or courtship behaviour was observed, the zig-zag and circling flight on approach to the flower is suggestive of odour-based attraction. Floral spectral reflectance was similar to sexually deceptive Caladenia. This study represents the first confirmation of a specialized pompilid pollination system outside of Africa. Although pollination occurs during nectar-foraging, long-distance sexual attraction cannot be ruled out as an explanation for the exclusive male visitation. The similarity in floral spectral reflectance to other Caladenia indicates colour may not impose a constraint on the evolution of pollination by pompilids.

  • Undetermined Matters : On the Use of Lay Witnesses in Buddhist Monastic Procedural Law
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Buddhism, Law and Society. - 2475-9260 .- 2475-9279 .- 2475-9279. ; 2, s. 1-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates one aspect of Buddhist monastic procedural law set forth in the aniyata (“undetermined”) section of the Prātimokṣa/Vibhaṅgas of the extant monastic law codes (vinaya). Here we find rules concerning how to handle cases in which a monk is accused by a trustworthy female lay follower (upāsikā) of having stayed alone in a secluded place with a woman. These rules have hitherto received comparatively little study, most of which has focused on the (Theravāda) Pāli vinaya. By examining the aniyata rules and their canonical commentaries in all six extant vinayas, I show that the treatment of these rules in the Pāli vinaya is not representative of Buddhist monastic law in general, and that the commonly held notion that any punitive legal action taken against a monk at the very least requires that he acknowledge the act, if not the offense with which he stands accused, is in need of revision. This paper further shows that there are significant differences between the Tibetan and Chinese translations of the Vibhaṅga of the Mūlasarvāstivāda vinaya (MSV), and so contributes to recent investigations into multiple MSV traditions. It also discusses some differences and similarities between the different vinayas, especially common elements between the Sarvāstivāda, Mūlasarvāstivāda and Mahāsāṃghika vinayas.

  • High prevalence of anxiety and hazardous alcohol consumption among patients attending an STI-clinic in northern Sweden
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: Depression and hazardous alcohol consumption is associated to high-risk sexual behaviours among adolescents and young adults. Is the same true among grownups? The impact of anxiety on sexual risk behaviour is not thoroughly investigated. Our aim was to evaluate the correlation between hazardous alcohol consumption, depression and anxiety to sexual risk taking including Chlamydia infections, among patients attending an STI reception.  Method: Patients attending an urban STI reception in Sweden were consecutively included and received questionnaires; screening- and demographic information, Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HAD). All patients also had a test for Chlamydia trachomatis taken. Results: 539 patients were included in the study, mean age 28 years. 152 (30%) had signs of anxiety and 37 (7%) of depression, of which 30 had also anxiety. Neither anxiety nor depression was correlated to sexual risk behaviour. >50% had hazardous alcohol consumption and it was independently linked to sexual risk behaviours and anxiety. Conclusion: Depression is not associated to sexual risk behaviours among adult STI-patients. Health care staff and must consider the high frequency of anxiety and hazardous alcohol consumption at their treatment of STI-clinic patients and in the preventive work. The society must work with lowering the stigmatization that still seems to be connected to STIs.

  • Potential of the Red Macroalga Bonnemaisonia hamifera in Reducing Methane Emissions from Ruminants
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Animals. - : Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). - 2076-2615. ; 13:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Researchers have been exploring seaweeds to reduce methane (CH4) emissions from livestock. This study aimed to investigate the potential of a red macroalga, B. hamifera, as an alternative to mitigate CH4 emissions. B. hamifera, harvested from the west coast of Sweden, was used in an in vitro experiment using a fully automated gas production system. The experiment was a randomized complete block design consisting of a 48 h incubation that included a control (grass silage) and B. hamifera inclusions at 2.5%, 5.0%, and 7.5% of grass silage OM mixed with buffered rumen fluid. Predicted in vivo CH4 production and total gas production were estimated by applying a set of models to the gas production data and in vitro fermentation characteristics were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of B. hamifera reduced (p = 0.01) predicted in vivo CH4 and total gas productions, and total gas production linearly decreased (p = 0.03) with inclusion of B. hamifera. The molar proportion of propionate increased (p = 0.03) while isovalerate decreased (p = 0.04) with inclusion of B. hamifera. Chemical analyses revealed that B. hamifera had moderate concentrations of polyphenols. The iodine content was low, and there was no detectable bromoform, suggesting quality advantages over Asparagopsis taxiformis. Additionally, B. hamifera exhibited antioxidant activity similar to Resveratrol. The findings of this study indicated that B. hamifera harvested from temperate waters of Sweden possesses capacity to mitigate CH4 in vitro.

  • Oral health and use of dental services in different stages of adulthood in Norway: a cross sectional study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Oral Health. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1472-6831. ; 21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundSocioeconomic status and oral health care habits may change throughout adult life. This calls for age-stratified analyses of oral health in the adult population to uncover differences that could be of importance for organizing adequate oral health care services. The aim of the present study was to describe self-reported oral health in different age groups in a general adult population in Norway, and to explore associations between self-reported oral health and age groups, sociodemographic factors, use of dental services, number of teeth and dental caries. MethodsWe used data from a cross-sectional study of almost 2000 Norwegian adults, 20-79 years old. The study included both a structured questionnaire and a clinical examination to assess sociodemographic variables, use of dental services, self-reported oral and general health as well as dental caries and number of teeth. For analysis, the participants were divided into three age groups: young adults (20-29 years), middle-aged adults (30-59 years), and senior adults (60 years and older). Differences among groups were analyzed by cross-tabulation, and logistic regression analyses were used to assess associations between variables.ResultsForty-eight percent of the participants rated their oral health as good. Almost half of the participants had at least one carious tooth, with the highest caries prevalence among the young adults. To be caries free was strongly associated with reporting good oral health among the young and middle-aged adults. One third of the senior adults had fewer than 20 teeth, which was associated with reporting moderate or poor oral health. Less than half of the young adults reported regular use of dental services, and 40% of them had postponed dental visits for financial reasons during the past 2 years. Regardless of age group, having to postpone dental visits for financial reasons or having poor-to-moderate general health were associated with high odds for reporting moderate or poor oral health.ConclusionsThat there were important age-group differences in self-reported and clinical measures of oral health and in the use of dental health services demonstrates the importance of age-stratified analyses in oral health research. Many adults, especially among the young, faced financial barriers for receiving dental health services, which was associated with poorer self-reported oral health. This argues for a need to revisit the financing of oral health care for adults in Norway.

  • HLA-DPB1*04:01 Protects Genetically Susceptible Children from Celiac Disease Autoimmunity in the TEDDY Study.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 1572-0241 .- 0002-9270. ; 110:6, s. 915-920
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies (tTGAs) represent the first evidence of celiac disease (CD) development. Associations of HLA-DR3-DQA1*05:01-DQB1*02:01 (i.e., DR3-DQ2) and, to a lesser extent, DR4-DQA1*03:01-DQB1*03:02 (i.e., DR4-DQ8) with the risk of CD differ by country, consistent with additional genetic heterogeneity that further refines risk. Therefore, we examined human leukocyte antigen (HLA) factors other than DR3-DQ2 for their contribution to developing tTGAs.

  • The impact of the metabotropic glutamate receptor and other gene family interaction networks on autism.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although multiple reports show that defective genetic networks underlie the aetiology of autism, few have translated into pharmacotherapeutic opportunities. Since drugs compete with endogenous small molecules for protein binding, many successful drugs target large gene families with multiple drug binding sites. Here we search for defective gene family interaction networks (GFINs) in 6,742 patients with the ASDs relative to 12,544 neurologically normal controls, to find potentially druggable genetic targets. We find significant enrichment of structural defects (P≤2.40E-09, 1.8-fold enrichment) in the metabotropic glutamate receptor (GRM) GFIN, previously observed to impact attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and schizophrenia. Also, the MXD-MYC-MAX network of genes, previously implicated in cancer, is significantly enriched (P≤3.83E-23, 2.5-fold enrichment), as is the calmodulin 1 (CALM1) gene interaction network (P≤4.16E-04, 14.4-fold enrichment), which regulates voltage-independent calcium-activated action potentials at the neuronal synapse. We find that multiple defective gene family interactions underlie autism, presenting new translational opportunities to explore for therapeutic interventions.

  • A comparison of long-term effects of scarification methods on the establishment of Norway spruce
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Forestry. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0015-752X .- 1464-3626. ; 86, s. 91-98
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scarification is the most common measure to improve the planting environment in Sweden. However, different scarification methods give varying results. During the early 1990s, a nation-wide experiment with 10 field installations was established in order to test the effect of several scarification methods, including two intensities of soil inversion and mounding, on growth of planted Norway spruce seedlings and in comparison with no scarification (i.e. control). Eighteen growing seasons after planting, a higher seedling survival was found following soil inversion (77 per cent for normal and 76 per cent for intensive) compared with mounding (67 per cent) and control (57 per cent). The mean height of the planted trees across all sites 18 years after planting was 413 and 430 cm following normal and intensive soil inversion, respectively, 424 cm after mounding and 346 cm in the control. The difference in height between the scarification treatments and the control corresponded to a time gain of approximate to 4 years of growth after 18 years. However, the length of the leading shoot was not affected by scarification after 1418 years, indicating that scarification did not affect growth beyond the establishment phase. Scarification reduced variation in height of the planted trees. On scarified plots, the number of naturally regenerated trees increased with more than 100 per cent to reach a mean value of 2300 stems per hectare.

  • A qualitative study of developing beliefs about health, illness and healthcare in migrant African women with gestational diabetes living in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: BMC Women's Health. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1472-6874. ; 18:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Gestational diabetes (GDM) is associated with health risks for both mother and child, and is particularly relevant to migrant women and women of African origin. With today's extensive global migration, contact with the new society and health system confronts the migrant's culture of origin with the culture of the host country. The question is whether immigrants' patterns of beliefs about health, illness, and health-related behaviour change over time, as no previous studies have been found on this topic. The purpose was to explore development over time, during and after pregnancy, of beliefs about health, illness and healthcare in migrant women with GDM born in Africa living in Sweden, and study the influence on self-care and care seeking. Methods: Qualitative prospective study. Semi-structured interviews, with 9 women (23-40 years), on three different occasions: during pregnancy (gestational weeks 34-38), and 3 and 14 months after delivery managed at an in-hospital diabetes specialist clinic in Sweden. Results: Beliefs were rather stable over time and mainly related to individual and social factors. GDM was perceived as a transient condition as health professionals had informed about it, which made them calm. None, except one, expressed worries about relapse and the health of the baby. Instead women worried about being unable to live an ordinary life and being bound to lifestyle changes, particularly diet, developing diabetes and needing insulin injections. Over time knowledge of appropriate diet improved, although no advice was experienced given by the clinic after delivery. The healthcare model was perceived as well functioning with easy access but regular follow-ups were requested as many (decreasing over time) were unsure whether they still had GDM and lacked information about GDM and diet. During pregnancy information was also requested about the healthcare system before/after delivery. Conclusions: Beliefs changed to a limited extent prospectively, indicated low risk awareness, limited knowledge of GDM, irrelevant worries about future health, and being unable to live a normal life, associated with problematic lifestyle changes. Beliefs about the seriousness of GDM in health professionals influenced patients' beliefs and health-related behaviour. The healthcare organisation urgently needs to be improved to deliver appropriate and timely information through competent staff.

  • Inflammatory Markers in Relation to Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease in the Pre-Symptomatic Phase of Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Arthritis & Rheumatology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 2326-5191 .- 2326-5205. ; 69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background/Purpose: Individuals who later developed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have increased levels and frequencies of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), years before onset of RA. The relationships between CVD risk factors and inflammatory markers, i.e., cytokines and chemokines, were analysed in individuals prior to onset of symptoms and compared with controls. Methods: A case-control study was based on population surveys from The Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP) and the WHO Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease (MONICA) with data collected on socioeconomic and lifestyle factors, BMI, waist, blood pressure, and blood samples by a nurse. The register of patients with RA (ARA criteria) was co-analysed with the registers from the Medical Biobank and 469 pre-symptomatic individuals (median age 50.2 years; 67.8% women, median predating time 5.0 (IQR; 2.0-8.0) years), and 234 controls (median age 50.3 years; 67.1% women) were identified. CVD risk factors were defined as: hypertension (treatment or systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg), elevated ApoB/ApoA1 ratio (women ≥0.7, men ≥0.8, including lipid lowering treatment), BMI ≥25kg/m2, diabetes, and ever being smoker. Concentrations of eotaxin, interferon gamma-induced protein (IP-10), monocyt-chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP1), macrophage derived chemokine (MDC), interleukin (IL) 2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10, were analysed in plasma using R&D systems' assays (Minneapolis, MN) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Results: Pre-symptomatic individuals had significantly higher levels of IL-6 compared with controls, both in women and men. IL-10 was significantly higher in pre-symptomatic men compared with controls. Cytokines/chemokines were significantly associated with the CVD risk factors in the cases e.g. IL-6 with each of the risk factors, eotaxin with smoking, IP-10 with increased BMI, being diabetes or having hypertension, whilst MDC was associated significantly with smoking and BMI≥25 kg/m2. After adjustments for sex and age only eotaxin concentrations were significantly associated with being ever smoker. In women, MDC was significantly associated with smoking, BMI≥25 kg/m2 and diabetes. Having the combination of several CVD risk factors was associated with significantly higher concentrations of MCP-1, MDC, and IL-6 in pre-symptomatic women. IL-6 increased further the relative risk in combinations with all CVD risk factors for the pre-symptomatic cases compared with controls. Conclusion: Increased concentrations of cytokines/chemokines were associated with CVD risk factors to a higher extent among the pre-symptomatic RA cases compared with controls. The pattern of association varied between the risk factors and the sex of the cases.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Chest. - : American College of Chest Physicians. - 0012-3692 .- 1931-3543. ; 164:5, s. 1257-1267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE) has been reported to subside within 24-48 hours, but comprehensive follow-up studies on symptom duration and long-term effects are missing.RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the symptom duration, recurrence, and long-term effects of SIPE?STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A follow-up study was conducted based on 165 cases of SIPE from Sweden's largest open water swimming event with 26,125 individuals participating during 2017-2019. Data on patient characteristics, clinical findings and symptoms were collected upon admission. Telephone interviews at 10 days and 30 months were performed to explore symptom duration, recurrence of SIPE symptoms, need of medical evaluation and long-term effects of self-assessed general health and physical activity level.RESULTS: Follow-up at 10 days was performed for 132 cases and at 30 months for 152 cases. Most of the cases were women and mean age was 48 years. At the 10-day follow-up, symptom duration >2 days after the swimming race were reported by 38%. The most common symptoms were dyspnea and cough. In patients followed for 30 months, recurrence of respiratory symptoms during open water swimming was reported by 28%. In multivariable logistic regression, asthma was independently associated with both symptom duration >2 days and recurrence of SIPE symptoms (p =0.045 and p =0.022 respectively). Most participants reported equal or improved general health (93%) and physical activity level (85%) after experiencing SIPE, but 58% had not swum in open water since the event.INTERPRETATION: The present large cohort study challenges the established hallmark of SIPE symptom duration of <48 hours, while SIPE recurrence was in the previously reported range. At 30 months, most patients reported unchanged self-assessed general health and physical activity level. These findings add to our understanding of the course of SIPE and can provide evidence-based information to swimmers and health care professionals.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses integration as a process rather than as a result or as a system of distribution, and takes its cue from Lave & Wenger’s concepts of “situated learning” and “legitimate peripheral participation”. By using integration as a process related concept the article analyzes both the intentions of an integration project as well as its consequences. The intention of the project was to simplify the integration of new members of the Swedish society by funnelling them into existing associations and clubs of their own choice in order to open up the considerable amount of social net works connections to these associations and clubs through their members. By becoming members of Swedish associations and clubs newcomers would also become aware of the importance of representation in Swedish society. The authors too see this result as an important step in the process of integration from a legitimate peripheral position towards the ever changing centre, e.g. integration as a result of various situated learning.

    • Cellulose partially converted to dialcohol cellulose has been identified as a potential breakthrough material for the production of bio-based, complex, double-curved surfaces due to its extensive strain-at-break characteristics (reaching as great as 80% in tensile loading). Tensile testing of handsheets made from modified cellulose fibers was conducted from 50 to 90% relative humidity (RH) and from 23 to 150 °C. Strain-at-break of the handsheets ranged from 35 to 80% over this humidity and temperature range, which is significantly greater than typical cellulose-based materials. The combined effect of moisture and temperature was further investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, which was utilized to determine the glass-transition temperature of the handsheets as a function of relative humidity. Based on the tensile test results and verified by the three-dimensional (3-D) forming and simulation, a forming limit diagram (strain-based failure surface which describes and illustrates the formability of the material) for the handsheets was generated. This forming limit illustrates significant extent to which this bio-based material can be 3-D formed into advanced structures. Furthermore, temperature was identified as the best, quickest, and most controllable method of improving extensibility of this material during 3-D forming.

  • Brain volumes and developmental outcome in childhood following fetal growth restriction leading to very preterm birth
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Physiology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-042X. ; 9:NOV
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Children born very preterm (PT) after fetal growth restriction (FGR) exhibit cognitive impairment at early school age. The relationship between neurodevelopmental impairment and attained regional brain volumes is unknown. Methods: We studied 23 preterm children with FGR (PT-FGR), 24 matched preterm children AGA (PT-AGA), and 27 matched term AGA children (T-AGA) by measuring brain volumes with magnetic resonance imaging at early school age. Cognitive and motor functions were assessed by the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children and the ABC-Movement score. Results: The mean (SD) full-scale IQ was 80 (17) in the PT-FGR group and 103 (12) in the PT-AGA group (p < 0.001). The PT-FGR group had lower mean total, gray matter, white matter, thalamic, cerebellar white matter, and hippocampal volumes as compared to the T-AGA group (p = 0.01, 0.04, 0.003, 0.002, 0.001, and 0.009, respectively). Brain volumes did not differ significantly between the PT groups. Reduction of hippocampal volume correlated with degree of growth restriction at birth (r = 0.46, p = 0.05). Neither the full-scale IQ nor the ABC movement score <5th percentile were related to brain volumes. Conclusion: Brain volumes as determined by MRI at early school age were primarily associated with degree of prematurity at birth and less with FGR. Regional brain volumes did not discriminate cognitive and motor function beyond that predicted by gestational age at birth.

  • Waiting for kidney transplantation from deceased donors: Experiences and support needs during the waiting time -A qualitative study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Patient Education and Counseling. - Shannon, Ireland : Elsevier. - 0738-3991 .- 1873-5134. ; 105:7, s. 2422-2428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: The study aimed to explore and describe patients’ experiences of the transplantation process and the support they had received during the waiting time.Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 patients currently waiting for kidney transplantation from deceased donors (n = 7) or recently having received kidney transplantation (n = 7). Interviews were transcribed, anonymized and analysed inductively using thematic analysis. Results: Two themes and seven sub-themes were identified. The first theme, “Swaying between hope and despair” describes patients’ perceptions of waiting for transplantation as a struggle, their expectations for life after the upcoming transplantation and experienced disappointments. The second theme, “Making your way through the waiting time”, describes support, strategies and behaviours used to manage the waiting time. Conclusion: Patients described life while waiting for kidney transplantation as challenging, involving unexpected events, not understanding the transplantation process and having unrealistic expectations on life after transplantation. They also described support, strategies and behaviours used, some of which led to unwanted consequences.Practice implications: Patients waiting for kidney transplantation from deceased donors need continuous and easily available education, practical and emotional support to manage the waiting time. Transplantation specific education is also needed to facilitate preparation for transplantation and adjustment to life after transplantation.
