  • On the Influence of Distance in the Interaction With Large Displays

    • As reported by a recent survey, over half of large display purchases are conducted for productivity purposes, while the remainder are purchased for a variety of purposes such as gaming and advertising. These large displays have advanced visibility, scalability, and accessibility characteristics and thus benefit perceived usability. However, usability issues such as the difficulties in precisely accessing distal information on large displays while on the move are still of concern. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the influence of moving distance on perceived usability in interactions with large displays. Comparative study results show inconsistent perceived usability throughout a range of distances, which differs from standard usability conventions. Moreover, the results show a correlation between distance and perceived usability in that, as the distance from commonly visited ranges increases, the perceived usability level decreases, and vice versa. The study demonstrates that distance is an effective interaction modality in large-display interactions, although it has weaknesses such as limited input channels.

    • One of the major drawbacks of integral imaging technique is its limited depth of field. Such limitation is imposed by the numerical aperture of the microlenses. In this paper we propose a method to extend the depth of field of integral imaging systems in the reconstruction stage. The method is based on the combination of deconvolution tools and depth filtering of each elemental image using disparity map information. We demonstrate our proposal presenting digital reconstructions of a 3D scene focused at different depths with extended depth of field.

    • This paper presents the use of polyelectrolyte-decorated amyloid fibrils as gate electrolyte in electrochromic electrochemical transistors. Conducting polymer alkoxysulfonate poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT-S) and luminescent conjugate polymer poly(thiophene acetic acid) (PTAA) are utilized to decorate insulin amyloid fibrils for gating lateral poly(3,4- ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) electrochemical transistors. In this comparative work, four gate electrolytes are explored, including the polyelectrolytes and their amyloid-fibril complexes. The discrimination of transistor behaviors with different gate electrolytes is understood in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. The combination of luminescent polymers, biomolecules and electrochromic transistors enables multi functions in a single device, for example, the color modulation in monochrome electrochromic display, as well as biological sensing/labeling.

    • In this paper, we present a consistent model to analyzethe drain current mismatch of organic thin-film transistors.The model takes charge fluctuations and edge effects into account,to predict the fluctuations of drain currents. A Poisson distributionfor the number of charge carriers is assumed to represent therandom distribution of charge carriers in the channel. The edge effectsdue to geometric variations in fabrication processes are interpretedin terms of the fluctuations of channel length and width. Thesimulation results are corroborated by experimental results takenfrom over 80 organic transistors on a flexible plastic substrate.

    • Inline quality control of liquid crystal (LC) cells is usually associated with a real-time noncontact characterization of moved LC cells. Such a characterization enables inspection of the products quality and helps to find in time defects. In the paper, we analyze an approach for fast evaluation of LC cell gap uniformity. The approach is based on detecting interference patterns formed by the quasi-monochromatic light reflected from a tested LC cell. To speed up the data treatment, a simple analytic expression describing the intensity of light interacting with the multilayered structure of an LC cell is derived. The results of the simplified model are compared with rigorous simulations. Two experimental setups are discussed. A CCD camera is used for detecting the interference patterns.

    • In this paper, we propose a technique to enable efficient and rigorous modeling of light emission in planar organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) composed of an arbitrary number of layers with different permittivity (including metals of a complex permittivity). The effects of the change of exciton radiative decay rate are explicitly included in the simulation. The numerical implementation of the technique is comprehensively discussed through an illustrative example. By using the proposed method, a bottom emitting OLED with a thick glass substrate is rigorously analyzed. The calculated results show a good agreement with the experimental results. The proposed method is efficient and well suited for optimizing OLEDs with complicated device structures. As a demonstration, we optimize the two-unit tandem top-emitting OLEDs with three types of charge generating layer. The results and design guidelines are given and discussed in detail.

    • Are social inclusion and social exclusion opposed? Through a three-year ethnography of an open source civic crowdsourcing platform aiming for generalized social inclusion, we show they are not. We argue that social inclusion and exclusion have a paradoxical relationship: ongoing tensions exist between them, and information systems shape those tensions. We find that design choices have crucial influence over the capacity of information system interventions to include and exclude and propose a framework for designing IS-based social inclusion interventions. The framework encompasses four types of strategies (positive discrimination, integrative oscillation, equitability and iterative inclusivity) for managing the paradoxical link between inclusion and exclusion through IS design. We also present the notion of "collectives" as a new way of thinking about exclusion criteria.

    • Using concepts from thin-film optics we hereby present a different design for a potentially high performance display system. The system's pixel design is centered around the selective reflections and transmissions of well defined and constructed thin films on specific substrates. By computing the relevant parameters for specific thin films that can reflect and transmit only Red, Green and Blue light and marrying the result to an RGB LED backlight system a rather unique display system emerges which we termed the Digital Micro Hinge Display (DMH).

    • This paper presents an alternative approach for achieving higher optical efficiency in conventional parallax barrier 3D mobile displays. The method entails modifying and enhancing the protrusion structure of conventional Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment (MVA) pixel arrays plus the Storage Capacitors (Cst) of the pixel circuitry which increase effective pixel transmission area by a factor of 1.07. Hiding the modified storage capacitor under the parallax barrier strip increases the barrier gap or slit size by a factor of 1.52. The result is a structure that enhances mobile displays' optical efficiency by a compounded factor slightly over 60% without compromising power consumption. © 2010 IEEE.

    • In this paper we introduce L2C, a hybrid lossy/lossless compression scheme applicable both to the memory subsystem and I/O traffic of a processor chip. L2C employs general-purpose lossless compression and combines it with state of the art lossy compression to achieve compression ratios up to 16:1 and improve the utilization of chip's bandwidth resources. Compressing memory traffic yields lower memory access time, improving system performance and energy efficiency. Compressing I/O traffic offers several benefits for resource-constrained systems, including more efficient storage and networking. We evaluate L2C as a memory compressor in simulation with a set of approximation-tolerant applications. L2C improves baseline execution time by an average of 50\%, and total system energy consumption by 16%. Compared to the lossy and lossless current state of the art memory compression approaches, L2C improves execution time by 9% and 26% respectively, and reduces system energy costs by 3% and 5%, respectively. I/O compression efficacy is evaluated using a set of real-life datasets. L2C achieves compression ratios of up to 10.4:1 for a single dataset and on average about 4:1, while introducing no more than 0.4% error.
