    • Recent literature in Systems Engineering has suggested the use of “value” to drive decision-making activities during preliminary design, in particular when choosing technologies and components for a complex system. However, to correctly evaluate design trade-offs, a visual link has to be established between the results of the value model and a product shape/geometry. This paper proposes the use of color-coded 3D CAD models to support the visualization of value analysis results in a Stage-Gate® process. The approach has been developed and exemplified within a case study related to the design of an aero-engine component, and has been demonstrated using SIEMENS NX HD3D Visual Reporting. The results of verification activities conducted in a laboratory setting show that the use of color-coded 3D CAD models increases the decision makers’ awareness of value-related information in a Stage-Gate process.

    • The focus of the research presented in this article has been an integration of a CAD-system and a FEA pre-processor to automatically develop a complete FEA-models in order to make simulation based design possible. The article presents a prototype system that was developed to automate the simulation of the behavior of ski-racks mounted on cars during collision. This type of simulations requires mesh models containing structured mesh, an issue solved in the presented system and that is presented in the article. It is also shown how to make it possible to introduce contacts, loads, constraints, and other FEM-properties based on CAD-geometry.

  • Normal Vector Estimation for Point Clouds via Local Delaunay Triangle Mesh Matching

    • Reliable estimation of normal vectors for point clouds is of practical importance in computer-aided geometric modeling and inspection. This paper introduces a new normal vector estimation method for point clouds based on the matching results of the local Delaunay triangle mesh formed at each point. The local mesh is a manifold patch of Delaunay triangles and resembles an open umbrella. According to the matching results of these umbrellas, the local Delaunay neighbors at each point can be reliably identified, which leads to accurate normal vector calculations. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed method yields normal vectors of notably improved accuracy, especially for points near edge or corner features. The improvement has been demonstrated using both simulated and scanned point cloud data sets.
