  • Classification, inference and segmentation of anomalous diffusion with recurrent neural networks
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 54:29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Countless systems in biology, physics, and finance undergo diffusive dynamics. Many of these systems, including biomolecules inside cells, active matter systems and foraging animals, exhibit anomalous dynamics where the growth of the mean squared displacement with time follows a power law with an exponent that deviates from 1. When studying time series recording the evolution of these systems, it is crucial to precisely measure the anomalous exponent and confidently identify the mechanisms responsible for anomalous diffusion. These tasks can be overwhelmingly difficult when only few short trajectories are available, a situation that is common in the study of non-equilibrium and living systems. Here, we present a data-driven method to analyze single anomalous diffusion trajectories employing recurrent neural networks, which we name RANDI. We show that our method can successfully infer the anomalous exponent, identify the type of anomalous diffusion process, and segment the trajectories of systems switching between different behaviors. We benchmark our performance against the state-of-the art techniques for the study of single short trajectories that participated in the Anomalous Diffusion (AnDi) challenge. Our method proved to be the most versatile method, being the only one to consistently rank in the top 3 for all tasks proposed in the AnDi challenge.

  • Deterministic reversible model of non-equilibrium phase transitions and stochastic counterpart
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 53:30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Npoint particles move within a billiard table made of two circular cavities connected by a straight channel. The usual billiard dynamics is modified so that it remains deterministic, phase space volumes preserving and time reversal invariant. Particles move in straight lines and are elastically reflected at the boundary of the table, as usual, but those in a channel that are moving away from a cavity invert their motion (rebound), if their number exceeds a given thresholdT. When the geometrical parameters of the billiard table are fixed, this mechanism gives rise to non-equilibrium phase transitions in the largeNlimit: lettingT/Ndecrease, the homogeneous particle distribution abruptly turns into a stationary inhomogeneous one. The equivalence with a modified Ehrenfest two urn model, motivated by the ergodicity of the billiard with no rebound, allows us to obtain analytical results that accurately describe the numerical billiard simulation results. Thus, a stochastic exactly solvable model that exhibits non-equilibrium phase transitions is also introduced.

  • Universal eigenvector correlations in quaternionic Ginibre ensembles
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 53:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-Hermitian random matrices enjoy non-trivial correlations in the statistics of their eigenvectors. We study the overlap among left and right eigenvectors in Ginibre ensembles with quaternion valued Gaussian matrix elements. This concept was introduced by Chalker and Mehlig in the complex Ginibre ensemble. Using a Schur decomposition, for harmonic potentials we can express the overlap in terms of complex eigenvalues only, coming in conjugate pairs in this symmetry class. Its expectation value leads to a Pfaffian determinant, for which we explicitly compute the matrix elements for the induced Ginibre ensemble with zero eigenvalues, for finite matrix size N. In the macroscopic large-N limit in the bulk of the spectrum we recover the limiting expressions of the complex Ginibre ensemble for the diagonal and off-diagonal overlap, which are thus universal.

    • This manuscript samples a series of recent results in the quest for a systematic understanding of the space of conformal field theories, with a particular focus on theories with extended supersymmetry. The large majority of results reported here were presented during the second Pollica summer workshop which took place from June 3-21 2019 and focused on mathematical and geometric tools for superconformal field theories. This manuscript represents in many ways a partial summary of the workshop.

    • A review of Boundary and defect conformal field theory: open problems and applications, following a workshop held at Chicheley Hall, Buckinghamshire, UK, 7-8 Sept. 2017. We attempt to provide a broad, bird's-eye view of the latest progress in boundary and defect conformal field theory in various sub-fields of theoretical physics, including the renormalization group, integrability, conformal bootstrap, topological field theory, supersymmetry, holographic duality, and more. We also discuss open questions and promising research directions in each of these sub-fields, and combinations thereof.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 56:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider classical spin systems evolving in continuous time with interactions given by a locally tree-like graph. Several approximate analysis methods have earlier been reported based on the idea of Belief Propagation / cavity method. We introduce a new such method which can be derived in a more systematic manner using the theory of Random Point Processes. Within this approach, the master equation governing the system's dynamics is closed via a set of differential equations for the auxiliary cavity probabilities. The numerical results improve on the earlier versions of the closure on several important classes of problems. We re-visit here the cases of the Ising ferromagnet and the Viana-Bray spin-glass model.

  • An operator derivation of the Feynman-Vernon theory, with applications to the generating function of bath energy changes and to an-harmonic baths
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 53:27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a derivation of the Feynman-Vernon approach to open quantum systems in the language of super-operators. We show that this gives a new and more direct derivation of the generating function of energy changes in a bath, or baths. As found previously, this generating function is given by a Feynman-Vernon-like influence functional, with only time shifts in the kernels coupling the forward and backward paths. We further show that the new approach extends to an-harmonic and possible non-equilibrium baths, provided that the interactions are bi-linear, and that the baths do not interact between themselves. Such baths are characterized by non-trivial cumulants. Every non-zero cumulant of certain environment correlation functions is thus a kernel in a higher-order term in the Feynman-Vernon action.

  • Conditional probability framework for entanglement and its decoupling from tensor product structure
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 55:39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our aim is to make a step toward clarification of foundations for the notion of entanglement (both physical and mathematical) by representing it in the conditional probability framework. In Schrodinger's words, this is entanglement of knowledge which can be extracted via conditional measurements. In particular, quantum probabilities are interpreted as conditional ones (as, e.g., by Ballentine). We restrict considerations to perfect conditional correlations (PCC) induced by measurements ('EPR entanglement'). Such entanglement is coupled to the pairs of observables with the projection type state update as the back action of measurement. In this way, we determine a special class of entangled states. One of our aims is to decouple the notion of entanglement from the compound systems. The rigid association of entanglement with the state of a few body systems stimulated its linking with quantum nonlocality ('spooky action at a distance'). However, already by Schrodinger entanglement was presented as knotting of knowledge (about statistics) for one observable A with knowledge about another observable B.

    • We examine relativistic diffusion through the frame and observer bundles associated with a Lorentzian manifold (M, g). Our focus is on spacetimes with a non-trivial isometry group, and we detail the conditions required to find symmetric solutions of the relativistic diffusion equation. Additionally, we analyze the conservation laws associated with the presence of Killing vector fields on (M, g) and their implications for the expressions of the geodesic spray and the vertical Laplacian on both the frame and the observer bundles. Finally, we present several relevant examples of symmetric spacetimes.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics a-Mathematical and Theoretical. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 55:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A SIC is a maximal equiangular tight frame in a finite dimensional Hilbert space. Given a SIC in dimension d, there is good evidence that there always exists an aligned SIC in dimension d(d - 2), having predictable symmetries and smaller equiangular tight frames embedded in them. We provide a recipe for how to calculate sets of vectors in dimension d(d - 2) that share these properties. They consist of maximally entangled vectors in certain subspaces defined by the numbers entering the d dimensional SIC. However, the construction contains free parameters and we have not proven that they can always be chosen so that one of these sets of vectors is a SIC. We give some worked examples that, we hope, may suggest to the reader how our construction can be improved. For simplicity we restrict ourselves to the case of odd dimensions.

    • This review describes the duality between color and kinematics and its applications, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the perturbative structure of gauge and gravity theories. We emphasize, in particular, applications to loop-level calculations, the broad web of theories linked by the duality and the associated double-copy structure, and the issue of extending the duality and double copy beyond scattering amplitudes. The review is aimed at doctoral students and junior researchers both inside and outside the field of amplitudes and is accompanied by various exercises.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 55:44

    • Advances in scattering amplitudes have exposed previously-hidden color-kinematics and double-copy structures in theories ranging from gauge and gravity theories to effective field theories such as chiral perturbation theory and the Born-Infeld model. These novel structures both simplify higher-order calculations and pose tantalizing questions related to a unified framework underlying relativistic quantum theories. This introductory mini-review article invites further exploration of these topics. After a brief introduction to color-kinematics duality and the double copy as they emerge at tree and loop-level in gauge and gravity theories, we present two distinct examples: (1) an introduction to the web of double-copy-constructible theories, and (2) a discussion of the application of the double copy to calculation relevant to gravitational-wave physics.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 53:49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We revise a method by Kalnins, Kress and Miller (2010) for constructing a canonical form for symmetry operators of arbitrary order for the Schrodinger eigenvalue equation H psi equivalent to (Delta(2) + V)psi = E psi on any 2D Riemannian manifold, real or complex, that admits a separation of variables in some orthogonal coordinate system. We apply the method, as an example, to revisit the Tremblay and Winternitz (2010) derivation of the Painleve VI potential for a 3rd order superintegrable flat space system that separates in polar coordinates and, as new results, we give a listing of the possible potentials on the two-sphere that separate in spherical coordinates and all two-hyperbolic (two-sheet) potentials separating in horocyclic coordinates. In particular, we show that the Painleve VI potential also appears for a 3rd order superintegrable system on the two-sphere that separates in spherical coordinates, as well as a 3rd order superintegrable system on the two-hyperboloid that separates in spherical coordinates and one that separates in horocyclic coordinates. Our aim is to develop tools for analysis and classification of higher order superintegrable systems on any 2D Riemannian space, not just Euclidean space.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 53:50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider the half-wave maps (HWM) equation which provides a continuum description of the classical Haldane-Shastry spin chain on the real line. We present exact multi-soliton solutions of this equation. Our solutions describe solitary spin excitations that can move with different velocities and interact in a non-trivial way. We make an ansatz for the solution allowing for an arbitrary number of solitons, each described by a pole in the complex plane and a complex spin variable, and we show that the HWM equation is satisfied if these poles and spins evolve according to the dynamics of an exactly solvable spin Calogero-Moser (CM) system with certain constraints on initial conditions. We also find first order equations providing a Backlund transformation of this spin CM system, generalize our results to the periodic HWM equation, and provide plots that visualize our soliton solutions.

    • We compute a set of structures which appear in the four-point function of protected operators of dimension two in N = 4 super Yang Mills with SU(N) gauge group, at any order in a large N expansion. They are determined only by leading order CFT data. By focusing on a specific limit, we make connection with the dual supergravity amplitude in flat space, where such structures correspond to iterated s-cuts. We make several checks and we conjecture that the same interpretation holds for supergravity amplitudes on AdS(5) x S-5.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 56:4, s. 044002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The existence of an exponential growth phase during early stages of a pandemic is often taken for granted. However, for the 2019 novel coronavirus epidemic, the early exponential phase lasted only for about six days, while the quadratic growth prevailed for forty days until it spread to other countries and continued, again quadratically, but with a shorter time constant. Here we show that this rapid phase is followed by a subsequent slow-down where the coefficient is reduced to almost the original value at the outbreak. This can be explained by the merging of previously disconnected sites that occurred after the disease jumped (nonlocally) to a relatively small number of separated sites. Subsequent variations in the slope with continued growth can qualitatively be explained as a result of reinfections and variations in their rate. We demonstrate that the observed behavior can be described by a standard epidemiological model with spatial extent and reinfections included. Time-dependent changes in the spatial diffusion coefficient can also model corresponding variations in the slope.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 55:29, s. 295001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider discrete-time Markov chains and study large deviations of the pair empirical occupation measure, which is useful to compute fluctuations of pure-additive and jump-type observables. We provide an exact expression for the finite-time moment generating function, which is split in cycles and paths contributions, and scaled cumulant generating function of the pair empirical occupation measure via a graph-combinatorial approach. The expression obtained allows us to give a physical interpretation of interaction and entropic terms, and of the Lagrange multipliers, and may serve as a starting point for sub-leading asymptotics. We illustrate the use of the method for a simple two-state Markov chain.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 55:50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a reduction scheme for a system constituted by two coupled harmonically-bound Brownian oscillators. We reduce the description by constructing a lower dimensional model which inherits some of the basic features of the original dynamics and is written in terms of suitable transport coefficients. The proposed procedure is twofold: while the deterministic component of the dynamics is obtained by a direct application of the invariant manifold method, the diffusion terms are determined via the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. We highlight the behavior of the coefficients up to a critical value of the coupling parameter, which marks the endpoint of the interval in which a contracted description is available. The study of the weak coupling regime is addressed and the commutativity of alternative reduction paths is also discussed.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 56

    • A procedure for model reduction of stochastic ordinary differential equations with additive noise was recently introduced in Colangeli et al (2022 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.55 505002), based on the Invariant Manifold method and on the Fluctuation–Dissipation relation. A general question thus arises as to whether one can rigorously quantify the error entailed by the use of the reduced dynamics in place of the original one. In this work we provide explicit formulae and estimates of the error in terms of the Wasserstein distance, both in the presence or in the absence of a sharp time-scale separation between the variables to be retained or eliminated from the description, as well as in the long-time behavior.

Following the algebraic Bethe ansatz we diagonalise the introduced Q-operators using the fundamental commutation relations. By acting on Bethe off-shell states and explicitly evaluating the trace in the auxiliary space we compute the eigenvalues of the Q-operators in terms of Bethe roots and show that the unwanted terms vanish if the Bethe equations are satisfied.

    • We consider the multiparticle asymmetric diffusion model (MADM) introduced by Sasamoto and Wadati with integrability preserving reservoirs at the boundaries. In contrast to the open asymmetric simple exclusion process the number of particles allowed per site is unbounded in the MADM. Taking inspiration from the stationary measure in the symmetric case, i.e. the rational limit, we first obtain the length 1 solution and then show that the steady state can be expressed as an iterated product of Jackson q-integrals. In the proof of the stationarity condition, we observe a cancellation mechanism that closely resembles the one of the matrix product ansatz. To our knowledge, the occupation probabilities in the steady state of the boundary-driven MADM were not available before.

    • We introduce a new Lie-algebraic approach to explicitly construct the motivic coaction and single-valued map of multiple polylogarithms in any number of variables. In both cases, the appearance of multiple zeta values is controlled by conjugating generating series of polylogarithms with Lie-algebra generators associated with odd zeta values. Our reformulation of earlier constructions of coactions and single-valued polylogarithms preserves choices of fibration bases, exposes the correlation between multiple zeta values of different depths and paves the way for generalizations beyond genus zero.

    • We relate the low-energy expansions of world-sheet integrals in genus-one amplitudes of open- and closed-string states. The respective expansion coefficients are elliptic multiple zeta values (eMZVs) in the open-string case and non-holomorphic modular forms dubbed 'modular graph forms (MGFs)' for closed strings. By inspecting the differential equations and degeneration limits of suitable generating series of genus-one integrals, we identify formal substitution rules mapping the eMZVs of open strings to the MGFs of closed strings. Based on the properties of these rules, we refer to them as an elliptic single-valued map which generalizes the genus-zero notion of a single-valued map acting on MZVs seen in tree-level relations between the open and closed string.

    • Resource theories are broad frameworks that capture how useful objects are in performing specific tasks. In this paper we devise a formal resource theory quantum measurements, focusing on the ability of a measurement to acquire information. The objects of the theory are equivalence classes of positive operator-valued measures, and the free transformations are changes to a measurement device that can only deteriorate its ability to report information about a physical system. We show that catalysis and purification, protocols that are possible in other resource theories, are impossible in our resource theory for quantum measurements. Standard measures of information gain are shown to be resource monotones, and the resource theory is applied to the task of quantum state discrimination.

The idea is to introduce an artificial time and solve an extended damped second order dynamic system whose stationary solution is the solution to the time-independent nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Constraints are often considered by projection onto the constraint set, here we include them explicitly into the dynamical system. We show the applicability and efficiency of the methods on examples of relevance in modern physics applications.

We establish the standard properties of a Q-operator, i.e. invariance of Hamiltonians, commutativity for different parameter values and that its eigenvalues satisfy an explicitly given first order ordinary difference equation in the parameter z.

    • We study numerically the ODE/IM correspondence for untwisted affine Lie algebras associated with simple Lie algebras including exceptional type. We consider the linear problem obtained from the massless limit of that of the modified affine Toda field equation. We found that the Q-functions in integrable models are expressed as the inner product of the solution of the dual linear problem and the subdominant solution of the linear problem. Using Cheng's algorithm to obtain the solution of the linear problem, we can determine efficiently the zeros of the Q-function, which is known to provide the solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs). We calculate the zeros numerically, which are shown to agree with the results from the non-linear integral equations (NLIEs) for simply-laced affine Lie algebras including the exceptional type. By the folding procedure of the Dynkin diagrams of simply-laced Lie algebras, we also find the correspondence for the linear problem of the non-simply-laced affine Lie algebras.

    • We derive the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations for the Schrödinger equation with an arbitrary polynomial potential and a regular singular (simple and double pole) term. The TBA equations provide a non-trivial generalization of the ODE/IM correspondence and also give a solution for the Riemann-Hilbert problem in the exact WKB method. We study the TBA equations in detail for the linear and the harmonic oscillator potentials together with inverse and centrifugal terms. As an application, we also compute numerically the Voros spectrum for these potentials using the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition.

    • Lossy bosonic channels play an important role in a number of quantum information tasks, since they well approximate thermal dissipation in an experiment. Here, we characterize their metrological power in the idler-free and entanglement-assisted cases, using respectively single- and two-mode Gaussian states as probes. In the problem of estimating the loss parameter, we study the power-constrained quantum Fisher information (QFI) for generic temperature and loss parameter regimes, showing qualitative behaviours of the optimal probes. We show semi-analytically that the two-mode squeezed-vacuum state optimizes the QFI for any value of the loss parameter and temperature. We discuss the optimization of the total QFI, where the number of probes is allowed to vary by keeping the total power constrained. In this context, we elucidate the role of the 'shadow-effect', or passive signature, for reaching a quantum advantage. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for the quantum illumination and quantum reading protocols.

    • Trace formulas play a central role in the study of spectral geometry and in particular of quantum graphs. The basis of our work is the result by Kurasov which links the Euler characteristic χ of metric graphs to the spectrum of their standard Laplacian. These ideas were shown to be applicable even in an experimental context where only a finite number of eigenvalues from a physical realization of quantum graph can be measured. In the present work we analyse sufficient hypotheses which guarantee the successful recovery of χ. We also study how to improve the efficiency of the method and in particular how to minimise the number of eigenvalues required. Finally, we compare our findings with numerical examples-surprisingly, just a few dozens of eigenvalues can be enough.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study functionals, such as heat and work, along trajectories of a class of multi-dimensional generalized Langevin systems in various limiting situations that correspond to different level of homogenization. These are the situations where one or more of the inertial time scale(s), the memory time scale(s) and the noise correlation time scale(s) of the systems are taken to zero. We find that, unless one restricts to special situations that do not break symmetry of the Onsager matrix associated with the fast dynamics, it is generally not possible to express the effective evolution of these functionals solely in terms of trajectory of the homogenized process describing the system dynamics via the widely adopted Stratonovich convention. In fact, an anomalous term is often needed for a complete description, implying that convergence of these functionals needs more information than simply the limit of the dynamical process. We trace the origin of such impossibility to area anomaly, thereby linking the symmetry breaking and area anomaly. This hold important consequences for many nonequilibrium systems that can be modeled by generalized Langevin equations. Our convergence results hold in a strong pathwise sense.

    • We consider anomaly cancellation for SU(N) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge theories where the left-handed chiral multiplets are in higher SU(2) representations. In particular, if the left-handed quarks and leptons transform under the triplet representation of SU(2) and if the U(1) gauge group is compact then up to an overall scaling there is only one possible nontrivial assignment for the hypercharges if N = 3, and two if N = 9. Otherwise there are infinitely many. We use the Mordell-Weil theorem, Mazur's theorem and the Cremona elliptic curve database which uses Kolyvagin's theorem on the Birch Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture to prove these statements.

We further apply the ABA to find the wave functions of protected states of AdS(3) x S-3 x S-3 x S-1 and its Z (2) orbifold. Our findings match with protected spectrum calculations from supergravity, Sym( N ) orbifolds and apply to the complete moduli space of these theories, excluding orbifold blow-up modes for which further analysis is necessary.

    • We study entanglement properties of hypergraph states in arbitrary finite dimension. We compute multipartite entanglement of elementary qudit hypergraph states, namely those endowed with a single maximum-cardinality hyperedge. We show that, analogously to the qubit case, also for arbitrary dimension there exists a lower bound for multipartite entanglement of connected qudit hypergraph states; this is given by the multipartite entanglement of an equal-dimension elementary hypergraph state featuring the same number of qudits as the largest-cardinality hyperedge. We highlight interesting differences between prime and non-prime dimension in the entanglement features.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We continue the effort to optimise and generalise the solution of the spectral problem of AdS(5)/CFT4 in the planar limit via integrability. We present a simple strategy to solve the quantum spectral curve (QSC) perturbatively for general states by focussing on the P mu-system. A Mathematica notebook with an implementation of this algorithm is provided, as well as an extensive database with a user-friendly interface containing more than 8000 solutions of the QSC. When investigating the solution space, we observe a curious phenomenon: existence of solutions for which the Q-system degenerates in the limit g -> 0. These degeneracies are lifted at higher orders in perturbation theory. The degenerating solutions have auxiliary Bethe roots merging with branch points at weak coupling.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 55:29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this note we present a formula for the equivariant index of the cohomological complex obtained from localization of N = 2 SYM on simply-connected compact four-manifolds with a T-2-action. Knowledge of said index is essential to compute the perturbative part of the partition function for the theory. In the topologically twisted case, the complex is elliptic and its index can be computed in a standard way using the Atiyah-Bott localization formula. Recently, a framework for more general types of twisting, so-called cohomological twisting, was introduced for which the complex turns out to be only transversally elliptic. While the index of such a complex has been computed for some cases where the manifold can be lifted to a Sasakian S-1-fibration in five dimensions, a general four-dimensional treatment was still lacking. We provide a formal, purely four-dimensional treatment of the cohomological complex, showing that the Laplacian part can be globally split off while the remaining part can be trivialized uniquely in the group-direction. This ultimately produces a simple formula for the index applicable for any compact simply-connected four-manifold. Finally, the index formula is applied to examples on S-4, CP2 and F-1. For the latter, we use the result to compute the perturbative partition function.

  • Disordered Kitaev chain with long-range pairing: Loschmidt echo revivals and dynamical phase transitions
  • 2020

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore the dynamics of long-range Kitaev chain by varying pairing interaction exponent. It is well known that the distinctive features of the nonequilibrium dynamics of a closed quantum system are closely related to the equilibrium phase transitions. Specifically, the return probability (Loschmidt echo) of the system to its initial state, in the finite-size system, is expected to exhibit periodicity after a sudden quench to a quantum critical point. The time of the first revivals scales inversely with the maximum of the group velocity. We show that, contrary to expectations, the periodicity of the return probability breaks for a sudden quench to the non-trivial quantum critical point. Further, we find that the periodicity of the return probability scales inversely with the group velocity at the gap closing point for a quench to the trivial critical point of truly long-range pairing case. Also, analyzing the effect of averaging quenched disorder shows that the revivals in the short-range pairing cases are more robust against disorder than that of the long-range pairing case. We also study the effect of disorder on the non-analyticities of the rate function of the return probability which introduced as a witness of the dynamical phase transition. We show that the non-analyticities in the rate function of return probability are washed out in the presence of strong disorders.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the fluctuation-driven escape of particles from a metastable state under the influence of a weak periodic force. We develop an asymptotic method to solve the appropriate Fokker-Planck equation with mixed natural and absorbing boundary conditions. The approach uses two boundary layers flanking an interior region; most of the probability is concentrated within the boundary layer near the metastable point of the potential and particles transit the interior region before exiting the domain through the other boundary layer, which is near the unstable maximal point of the potential. The dominant processes in each region are given by approximate time-dependent solutions matched to construct the approximate composite solution, which gives the rate of escape with weak periodic forcing. Using reflection we extend the method to a double well potential influenced by white noise and weak periodic forcing, and thereby derive a two-state stochastic model-the simplest treatment of stochastic resonance theory-in the nonadiabatic limit.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical. - 1751-8121 .- 1751-8113. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we construct the subset of modes on S 7 that are relevant in the compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity on a squashed S 7 when restricted to the sector that comprises singlets under the S p ( 1 ) × S p ( 2 ) isometry of the squashed sphere. Some of the properties of these modes, connected to the transition from the round S 7 to the squashed S 7, are analysed in detail. Special features of the Rarita-Schwinger operator, described in earlier work by Buchdahl, are explained and related to properties of the squashed S 7 operator spectrum obtained in previous work by the authors. We then discuss how the singlet modes give rise to supermultiplets in the left-squashed case, the phenomenon of de-Higgsing, and what happens to the AdS4 fields in these supermultiplets under an orientation reversal (‘skew-whiffing’) of the squashed S 7. Finally, we consider the possible choices of boundary conditions that appear for some of these fields in AdS4 in the case of the right-squashed non-supersymmetric compactification, and how these choices may affect the stability of the gravity theory.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 53:40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present simple solutions of first-passage and first-exit time problems for general moving boundaries and general Itô processes in one dimension, including diffusion processes with convection. The approach uses eigenfunction expansion, despite the boundary time-variability that, until now, has been an obstacle for spectral methods. The eigenfunction expansion enables the analytical reduction of the problem to a set of equivalent ordinary differential equations, which can be input directly to readily available solvers. The method is thus suitable as a basis for efficient numerical computation. We illustrate the technique by application to Wiener and Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes for a variety of moving boundaries, including cases for which exact results are known.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 57:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Gaussian phase-space representation can be used to implement quantum dynamics for fermionic particles numerically. To improve numerical results, we explore the use of dynamical diffusion gauges in such implementations. This is achieved by benchmarking quantum dynamics of few-body systems against independent exact solutions. A diffusion gauge is implemented here as a so-called noise-matrix, which satisfies a matrix equation defined by the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation of the phase-space representation. For the physical systems with fermionic particles considered here, the numerical evaluation of the new diffusion gauges allows us to double the practical simulation time, compared with hitherto known analytic noise-matrices. This development may have far reaching consequences for future quantum dynamical simulations of many-body systems.

    • Upper and lower estimates of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a metric graph have been established in 2017 by Berkolaiko, Kennedy, Kurasov, and Mugnolo. Both these estimates can be achieved at the same time only by highly degenerate eigenvalues which we call maximally degenerate. By comparison with the maximal eigenvalue multiplicity proved by Kac and Pivovarchik in 2011, we characterize the graphs exhibiting maximally degenerate eigenvalues which are the figure-of-eight graph, the 3-watermelon graph, and the lasso trees-namely, trees decorated with lasso graphs.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 54:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Trajectory-based methods are well-developed to approximate steady-state probability distributions for stochastic processes in large-system limits. The trajectories are solutions to equations of motion of Hamiltonian dynamical systems, and are known as eikonals. They also express the leading flow lines along which probability currents balance. The existing eikonal methods for discrete-state processes including chemical reaction networks are based on the Liouville operator that evolves generating functions of the underlying probability distribution. We have previously derived [1, 2] a representation for the generators of such processes that acts directly on the hierarchy of moments of the distribution, rather than on the distribution itself or on its generating function. We show here how in the large-system limit the steady-state condition for that generator reduces to a mapping from eikonals to the ratios of neighboring factorial moments, as a function of the order k of these moments. The construction shows that the boundary values for the moment hierarchy, and thus its whole solution, are anchored in the interior fixed points of the Hamiltonian system, a result familiar from Freidlin-Wenztell theory. The direct derivation of eikonals from the moment representation further illustrates the relation between coherent-state and number fields in Doi-Peliti theory, clarifying the role of canonical transformations in that theory.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 57:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Partial resetting, whereby a state variable x(t) is reset at random times to a value a x ( t ) , 0 ⩽ a ⩽ 1 , generalizes conventional resetting by introducing the resetting strength a as a parameter. Partial resetting generates a broad family of non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) that interpolates between the conventional NESS at strong resetting (a = 0) and a Gaussian distribution at weak resetting (a → 1). Here such resetting processes are studied from a thermodynamic perspective, and the mean cost associated with maintaining such NESS are derived. The resetting phase of the dynamics is implemented by a resetting potential Φ ( x ) that mediates the resets in finite time. By working in an ensemble of trajectories with a fixed number of resets, we study both the steady-state properties of the propagator and its moments. The thermodynamic work needed to sustain the resulting NESS is then investigated. We find that different resetting traps can give rise to rates of work with widely different dependencies on the resetting strength a. Surprisingly, in the case of resets mediated by a harmonic trap with otherwise free diffusive motion, the asymptotic rate of work is insensitive to the value of a. For general anharmonic traps, the asymptotic rate of work can be either increasing or decreasing as a function of the strength a, depending on the degree of anharmonicity. Counter to intuition, the rate of work can therefore in some cases increase as the resetting becomes weaker ( a → 1 ) although the work vanishes at a = 1. Work in the presence of a background potential is also considered. Numerical simulations confirm our findings.
