  • Modeling Knowledge Transfer in a Software Maintenance Organization : - An Experienc Report and Critical Analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 1865-1348 .- 1865-1356. - 9783540892175 ; , s. 15-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modeling notations have been introduced to help understand the why behind software processes. We ask how are these techniques being used in industrial practices? The first part of this paper reports on the experiences at an industrial software organization, Ericsson Marconi SpA, in applying imodeling to analyze knowledge transfer effectiveness for software maintenance. The modeling was done in-house without consultation with the iresearch community. In the second part of the paper, university researchers analyze the modeling experience in that organization, drawing a comparison with the usage of itypically envisaged by the research community. We found that the modeling approach used at the industry site employed smaller and simplified models, but were effective for highlighting key issues for the organization and communication. From the case study, we draw some conclusions for the future development of the imodeling approach.

  • Ownership, Uniqueness, Immutability
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 46th International Conference on Objects, Models, Components, Patterns (TOOLS-Europe). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Programming in an object-oriented language demands a fine balance between flexibility and control. At one level, objects need to interact freely to achieve our implementation goals. At a higher level, architectural constraints that ensure the system can be understood by new developers and can evolve as requirements change must be met. To resolve this tension, researchers have developed type systems expressing ownership and behavioural restrictions such as immutability. This work reports on our consolidation of the resulting discoveries into a single programming language. Our language, Joe_3, imposes little additional syntactic overhead, yet can encode powerful patterns such as fractional permissions and the reference modes of Flexible Alias Protection.

  • A Measurement Framework for Team Level Assessment of Innovation Capability in Early Requirements Engineering
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Product-Focused Software Process Improvement (Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing). - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1865-1348. ; 32, s. 71-86
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When developing software-intensive products for a market-place it is important for a development organisation to create innovative features for coming releases in order to achieve advantage over competitors. This paper focuses on assessment of innovation capability at team level in relation to the requirements engineering that is taking place before the actual product development projects are decided, when new business models, technology opportunities and intellectual property rights are created and investigated through e.g. prototyping and concept development. The result is a measurement framework focusing on four areas: innovation elicitation, selection, impact and ways-of-working. For each area, candidate measurements were derived from interviews to be used as inspiration in the development of a tailored measurement program. The framework is based on interviews with participants of a software team with specific innovation responsibilities and validated through cross-case analysis and feedback from practitioners.
