  • Productivity measurement and improvements: A theoretical model and applications from the manufacturing industry
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 398
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns productivity improvement at factory floor level, i.e. at station, cell, or line level. At many companies, workers associate productivity or efficiency increase with something negative, it is interpreted as an increase in speed and the “sweat factor”. These misconceptions and lack of knowledge tend to put “a wet blanket” on all attempts to increase productivity in good times and productivity improvements are only discussed when the company is bleeding and at that time it’s often too late. For these reasons it’s important to clarify what productivity is and especially how it can be improved. In general, the productivity at shop-floor level can be improved through im-proving the method, increasing the performance, and increasing the utilization. The design of the products and the amount of scraped products also affects the productivity in both manual tasks as well as work performed by machines. These aspects of productivity will be elaborated in the theoretical model and the industrial applications presented in this article.

  • A Method to Identify Risks Associated with a PLM Solution
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 388 AICT
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Not all investments in PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) are successful. Measuring the business effects of a PLM solution is essential, but can only be applied subsequent to solution deployment. It could be more powerful to make an early evaluation of the PLM solution, resulting in the business benefits, making corrections possible prior to deployment. In this paper, a method to identify risks associated with a PLM solution is proposed based on an architecture model of a PLM solution and available PLM solution guidelines. Its use is demonstrated in an industry case and evaluated as compared to its intended use. The intention is that identified risks can help identify change proposals to the PLM solution or to obtain a better understanding of the consequences for solution deployment. The findings indicate that the method is a useful support for identifying risks associated with a PLM solution. However, additional testing of the method in real settings is necessary to strengthen that indication.

  • Socially Sustainable Manufacturing: Exploring the European Landscape
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783662447352 ; 439:2, s. 474-481
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable manufacturing has been extensively researched in the last decades, however there is a lack of coherence in literature specifically addressing its social dimension. Within the framework of the Social Sustainability-themed project SO SMART (Socially Sustainable Manufacturing for the Factories of the Future), a preliminary explorative survey and interview study were deployed among manufacturing companies and their stakeholders in Europe to investigate the extent to which they understand and practice social sustainability in relation to their business activities and context. Using an inquiry approach based on the main concepts related to social sustainability found in literature, this paper reports findings on preliminary exploration of the European landscape of social sustainability-related practices from a corporate and societal perspective. Findings contribute to the creation of a basis of shared knowledge as a prerequisite for extending and further developing concepts and models for socially sustainable manufacturing ecosystems.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783642403514 ; 397:1, s. 135-141
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In ten years customers will select products not only based on price and quality but also with strong regard to the product value environmental footprint, including for example the energy consumed. Customers expect transparency in the product realization process, where most products are labeled with their environmental footprint. Vigorous companies see this new product value as an opportunity to be more competitive. In order to effectively label the envi-ronmental impact of a product, it is pertinent for companies to request the envi-ronmental footprint of each component from their suppliers. Hence, companies along the product lifecycle require a tool, not only to facilitate the computing of the environmental footprint, but also help reduce/balance the environmental impact during the lifecycle of the product. This paper proposes to develop a procedure that companies will use to evaluate, improve and externally advertise their product’s environmental footprint to customers.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper looks at processes of embedding of computer systems in four organisational case studies in three different countries. A selective literature study of implementation of computer systems leads the authors to suggest that seen from a top down managerial perspective employees may be assumed to accept and use new computer systems, for example an ERP system but what happens deep down in the organisation are a reshaping, domestication or appropriation of the software for example through developing workarounds. The authors further suggest that traditional implementation models may incorrectly assume that the computer systems has been embedded in the organisation because things appear to be running smoothly when in fact software and/or processes have been reshaped by employees to suit their local needs. These social shapings appear to be done for a multitude of reasons. However, from the qualitative case studies it appears that most workarounds are done to make work easier and/or to overcome perceived inflexibilities in existing enterprise mandated systems. The ubiquitous access to cloud technologies and an increasing workforce of tech savy “digital natives” using their own devices (BYOD) has exacerbated the situation. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014.

  • Capacity Planning at a Tactical Level in Hospital Departments
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783662447352 ; 439:2, s. 535-547, s. 535-547
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose is to describe the essential components and output of the tactical planning process and to explore context-related variations in the applicability of the planning process for hospital departments. The paper is based on a multiple-case study of three hospital departments' planning processes at a tactical level, wherein the department manager's support of the planning process was found to be essential. This study illustrates how an active tactical planning process can provide for numerous potential measures to adjust capacity and how they may vary in different contexts. An active tactical planning process provides the ability to move from current short-term, costly fire-fighting measures to more proactive capacity adjustments within hospital departments, which allow the department to stay under budget while keeping waiting times and queues within limits.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 388 AICT
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To stay competitive, a large company must make use of its size and gain economy of scale, one way being through reusing designed parts and tech-nology knowledge globally throughout the organization. This paper describes a case study performed at a company that is implement-ing a new Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system, globally across sever-al different divisions, to be able to reuse design across the organization. The study shows that though global design reuse is the final goal, the way there is long. The true benefits are still in the future, but there are issues with the PLM solution on the designer level. To prevent such a situation in the fu-ture, the authors suggest that benefits shall be defined for all phases in the PLM implementation, not just as high business goals for the final stage. That way, you keep momentum in the change effort and keep all parties motivated.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783642152566 ; 330, s. 173-186
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Language-based information-flow security considers programs that manipulate pieces of data at different sensitivity levels. Securing information flow in such programs remains an open challenge. Recently, considerable progress has been made on understanding dynamic monitoring for secure information flow. This paper presents a framework for inlining dynamic information-flow monitors. A novel feature of our framework is the ability to perform inlining on the fly. We consider a source language that includes dynamic code evaluation of strings whose content might not be known until runtime. To secure this construct, our inlining is done on the fly, at the string evaluation time, and, just like conventional offline inlining, requires no modification of the hosting runtime environment. We present a formalization for a simple language to show that the inlined code is secure: it satisfies a noninterference property. We also discuss practical considerations and preliminary experimental results.

  • Securing Class Initialization
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783642134456 ; 321, s. 48-62
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Language-based information-flow security is concerned with specifying and enforcing security policies for information flow via language constructs. Although much progress has been made on understanding information flow in object-oriented programs, the impact of class initialization on information flow has been so far largely unexplored. This paper turns the spotlight on security implications of class initialization. We discuss the subtleties of information propagation when classes are initialized and propose a formalization that illustrates how to track information flow in presence of class initialization by a type-and effect system for a simple language. We show how to extend the formalization to a language with exception handling.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The availability from the mid-1960s of powerful mainframe computer systems such as IBM’s System 360 allowed computer specialists and rationalization experts to pursue what appeared to be the logical next step in the evolution of office rationalization: from the automation of clerical routines to the automation of decision-making. This paper argues that despite the rapid diffusion of the idea of the totally integrated, firm-wide, centralized management information system (MIS) – which, besides data processing, allowed business executives real-time information on a desktop terminal – there are few real examples of MIS implementations. A survey of the MIS projects at Volvo, Saab, Asea and SAS shows that in practice these projects had limited ambitions to provide executive information, were scaled down owing to early problems and resulted in limited systems for material requirements planning.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783642403606 ; 398:PART 2, s. 120-127
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims at exploring how ICT affects CPFR with focus on information flows in planning and control processes. A case study of a pharmacy supply chain in Norway is conducted to investigate process changes related to an APS system implemented to support a CPFR initiative. Process changes are investigated in view of enhanced information, automated processes and organizational transformation. This study shows that the main impact of ICT is associated with enhanced information flows and transformed processes that its contribution to reducing labour is more limited, and that large information volumes are critical. Adding to current CPFR literature this work provides insights to the contribution of ICT with focus on enhanced information and process transformation. The importance of automatic features of ICT in information processing and exchange and its contribution to improved planning and control information as well as to implementing a joint CPFR approach is especially highlighted.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 388 AICT, s. 182-191
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the development of complex products product configuration systems are often used to support the development process. Item Usage Rules (IURs) are conditions for including specific items in products bills of materials based on a high-level product description. Large number of items and significant complexity of IURs make it difficult to maintain and analyze IURs manually. In this paper we present an automated approach for verifying IURs, which guarantees the presence of exactly one item from a predefined set in each product, as well as that an IUR can be reformulated without changing the set of products for which the item was included.

    • This paper presents a brief historical account of the unorthodox design of an educational program for information systems development. The design and development of this program was initiated in 1977 at the University College of Östersund, today the Mid Sweden University. The presented account provides a description of the somewhat unusual context of this initiative, which was regarded as a weakness by conventional standards, but became an opportunity in this particular situation. The intellectual inspirations and sources for the design of this program are characterized and followed by a presentation of the very content and operating mode of the educational program. The final part presents the various outcomes that the program gave rise to, in terms of students’ professional careers observed.

  • Diffusion of Open Source ERP Systems Development: How Users Are Involved
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1868-4238. - 9783642241475 ; 366, s. 188-203
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open Source receives high attention among organizations today, and there is also a growing interest on Open Source Enterprise Resource Planning (OS ERP) systems. Open source development is often considered having a high level of involvement from stakeholders in adopting organizations. However, it depends on for the first what is meant by stakeholders, but also what is meant by involvement. In the area of ERP development stakeholder involvement is defined as to what extent users of the system are involved in the development of the standardized software package. The way this is done differs between different vendors but it can be summarized as dealing with management of requirements. In this paper we explore how requirements management is done in development of OS ERP. To do this, we use a theoretical base on requirements management in the ERP field from which we investigate stakeholder involvement in four organizations and the development of it’s respectively OS ERP system. The basic question asked was: how are end-users of OS ERPs involved in the development of OS ERP. From the investigation we present a general picture of the requirements management process in the OS ERP area. The main conclusion is that end-users are not involved to the extent first expected and when comparing with proprietary ERP development a tendency towards a similar approach to requirements management in OS ERP development was discovered.

  • Key Performance indicators used as measurement parameter for plant-wide feedback loops - work in progress
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - 1868-4238. ; 440, s. 91-99
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Feedback is a fundamental concept in automatic control. Feedback loops are used extensively in industrial applications today and there are work-procedures for designing traditional single parameter control loops. In the work procedure it is important to select control-parameters, manipulated parameters and control-strategies. A similar work-procedure could also be used for designing plant-wide control feedback loops. Key performance Indicators is thus an important concept since they can be used as control-parameters. In this paper an analogy between the single-loop and plant-wide approach is discussed, and key performance indicators from the new international standard ISO 22400 are presented.
