  • The Role of Local Open Source Communities in the Development of Open Source Projects
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Open Source Systems: Integrating Communities, Oss 2016. - Berlin : Springer-Verlag Berlin. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783319392257
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the position of local open source communities (LOSCs) in the development of open source projects (OSPs). We have conducted an empirical study to examine the role of LOSCs, their way of working, and the benefits/challenges they experience compared to the overall global community. The qualitative investigation consisted of ten semi-structured interviews with members within different LOSCs. The results confirm the importance of LOSCs and the pivotal role they play in the development of OSPs. In many cases, they act as the middleman between individual members and the project's global community. However, LOSCs have their own kinds of challenges.

  • Product circularity assessment methodology
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 514, s. 411-418
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In today’s dynamic economic environment, industry is facing global challenges such as meeting the needs of a growing population, resource scarcity and landfill space shortage. These issues highlight the need for a dramatically more efficient use of natural resources to create social and economic value for society while respecting the carrying capacity limits of the planet. Additive manufacturing technologies provide opportunities to support sustainable manufacturing and the circular economy paradigm. These opportunities can be leveraged throughout the product lifecycle: energy and material consumption reduction in manufacturing, lower material use through maintenance, reuse, remanufacturing and recycling. Despite these benefits being more broadly recognised in recent years, industrial applications are still scarce. This work proposes a quantitative methodology to assess the circularities arising along the lifecycle of a product fabricated with additive manufacturing technologies, thereby supporting the shift to more circular industrial systems and sustainability.

  • Data minimisation: A language-based approach
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IFIP Information Security & Privacy Conference (IFIP SEC'17), volume 502 of IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. pages 442-456. - Cham : Springer Science and Business Media. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783319584683
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data minimisation is a privacy-enhancing principle considered as one of the pillars of personal data regulations. This principle dictates that personal data collected should be no more than necessary for the specific purpose consented by the user. In this paper we study data minimisation from a programming language perspective. We define a data minimiser as a pre-processor for the input which reduces the amount of information available to the program without compromising its functionality. We give its formal definition and provide a procedure to synthesise a correct data minimiser for a given program.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 472, s. 177-183, s. 177-183
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-driving vehicles are an ongoing research and engineering topic even though first automotive OEMs started to deploy such features to their premium vehicles. Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg are operating and maintaining a vehicle laboratory comprising 1/10 scaled cars, a Volvo XC90, and a Volvo FH truck to conduct studies with automated driving. This laboratory is used both from researchers from different disciplines and in education. The experimental software for all these platforms is powered by the same software environment for different hardware architectures. Therefore, maintaining and deploying new features and bugfixes to the users of this laboratory in a fast way needs to be organized in a reproducible yet easily maintainable manner. This paper outlines our open approach to encapsulate our build, test, and deployment process using VirtualBox, Docker, and Jenkins.

  • Implementation challenges affecting the environmental improvement performance in pharmaceutical production: Results of a green kaizen pilot
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 535, s. 58-66
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on working findings in an action research-based project, implementing a green kaizen pilot in a European pharmaceutical manufacturing company. The aim of the study is to investigate how continuous improvement initiatives with focus on environment originally developed for the automotive manufacturing industry could apply to the pharmaceutical industry. It also aspires to understand the enabling and hindering issues are for such implementation. There are considerable similarities of implementing lean in general in the two sectors, however, some key differences and challenges were apparent when implementing this specific green kaizen method called Green Performance Map. An implication for pharma practitioners implementing the green kaizen method concerns how to improve working procedures and production equipment to become more environmentally friendly amid high regulatory demands on process quality. Implementation challenges are discussed in terms of fidelity, locus and extensiveness of lean practices implementation.

  • Improving Factory Resource and Energy Efficiency: The FREE Toolkit
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 459, s. 640-646
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eco-efficiency is defined as the concept of doing more with less; in other words, creating goods and services while preserving natural resources and reducing waste and pollution during manufacturing. This paper presents a toolkit for eco-efficiency at factory level: the Factory Resource and Energy Efficiency (FREE) toolkit. It contains five key elements; (1) see waste, (2) find solutions, (3) set targets, (4) assess yourself, and (5) create good habits. The FREE toolkit contains a range of games, tools and methods mapped against these five elements to integrate sustainability into factory activities. This paper presents the toolkit structure and an example of the journey for eco-efficiency.

  • Skills and education for additive manufacturing: A review of emerging issues
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 513, s. 289-297
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent advances in digital technologies and in additive manufacturing (AM) in particular are revolutionising our industrial landscape. These changes require new engineering and management skills to exploit fully and sustainably the benefits offered by these advanced technologies. The current talent shortage calls for new education programmes to deliver a skilled, capable and adaptable workforce. Existing courses on design, engineering and management related to production and manufacturing do not systematically deliver the necessary skills and knowledge for an effective deployment of AM technologies. Based on a literature review and evidence collected from multi-stakeholder workshops, this paper presents the key themes for education programmes to address the current skill gap and barriers to AM adoption and exploitation.

  • Teaching energy efficiency in manufacturing using gamification: A case study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 514, s. 419-426
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainability is a critical topic and needs to be systematically integrated in engineering education and professional training courses in manufacturing organisations. Eco-efficiency is a key sustainability concept but it can be challenging to teach as it is highly practical and thus ill-fitted for purely classroom environments. Games and simulations provide a good mechanism for effective and engaging teaching on such practical topics. This paper describes a case study of four game sessions ran in a manufacturing company. This empirical research shows how the card game ‘One thousand kWh’ enabled participants to actively learn about energy efficiency in manufacturing operations, and to explore sustainable manufacturing practices and barriers to implementation. © 2017, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

  • The Role of Additive Manufacturing in Improving Resource Efficiency and Sustainability
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 460, s. 129-136
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Additive manufacturing is heralded as a revolutionary process technology. While it has yet to cause a dramatic transformation of the manufacturing system, there are early signs of how the characteristics of this novel production process can improve resource efficiency and other sustainability aspects. In this paper, we draw on examples from a wide range of products and industries to understand the role of additive manufacturing in sustainable industrial systems. We identify four main areas in which the adoption of additive manufacturing is leading to improved resource efficiency: (1) product and process design; (2) material input processing; (3) make-to-order product and component manufacturing; and (4) closing the loop.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 566, s. 682-689
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To accomplish a flexible and highly productive production system, collaborative robot applications, such as co-bots, can be one solution. Hence, last year: 2018, less than 4% of the industrial robot investments had “collaborative roots”. In order to increase this number, clear strategies for the implementation of co-bots are vital. This paper will present the results from the study of 40 SMEs, and six OEMs, regarding where and when to implement co-bots in production. Furthermore, which KPIs to consider when implementing these collaborative robot applications. The Lotus Blossom technique has been used to create the first steps towards strategies for implementing collaborative robot applications for the Operator 4.0. Seven areas of application have been pre-selected, and one area has been left free of choice for the companies. The results show that the areas with greater strategic interest are ‘pick-n’-place’ tasks and ‘load-unload’ tasks.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783319392240 ; 472, s. 111-122
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open source software (OSS) systems are being used for increasingly critical functions in modern societies, e.g., in health care, finance, government, defense, and other safety and security sensitive sectors. There is an increasing interest in software certification as a means to assure quality and dependability of such systems. However, the development processes and organizational structures of OSS projects can be substantially different from traditional closed-source projects. The distributed, “bazaar-style” approach to software development in OSS systems is often perceived incompatible with certification. This paper presents the results of a scoping review on certification in OSS systems in order to identify and categorize key issues and provide a comprehensive overview of the current evidence on this topic.

  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. - 9783319171456 ; 447, s. 3-11
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the 1950s and 1960s computers became part and parcel of the great modernization project – the creation of the modern welfare state. The ability to control and rationalize provided by the digital technology proved indispensable for the expanding public sector as well as for trade and business. At the turn of the decade, the effects of the new technology on Swedish society became increasingly apparent. This paper examines the debate on computer and politics in Sweden during the 1970s and the 1980s. It particularly discusses two issues that were hotly debated: integrity and jobs. The debate was occupied with the centralized solutions and systemic effects large-scale computing implied. In this debate computing technology was perceived as a threat, but at the same time there was a widely shared belief amongst debaters that it was possible to take control of the technology

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nowadays, in an ubiquitous world where everything is connected to the Internet and where social networks play an important role in our lives, security and privacy is a must. Billions of pictures are uploaded daily to social networks and, with them, parts of our private life are disclosed. In this work, we propose a practical solution for secure photo sharing on social network with independence of its architecture which can be either centralised or distributed. This solution solves the inconsistencies that appear in distributed social network as a consequence of treating photos and access policies separately. Specifically, we solve this open problem by attaching an access policy to the images and thus, each time a photo is re-shared, the access policy will travel together with the image.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Release management in large-scale software development projects requires significant communication and coordination. It is particularly challenging in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) ecosystems, in which hundreds of loosely connected developers and their projects need to be coordinated to release software to a schedule. To better understand this process and its challenges, we analyzed over two and half years of communication in the GNOME ecosystem and studied developers’ interactions. We cataloged communication channels, categorized high level communication and coordination activities in one of them, and triangulated our results by interviewing developers. We found that a release schedule, influence instead of direct control, and diversity are factors that impact positively the release process in the GNOME ecosystem. Our results can help organizations build better large-scale teams and show that research focused on individual projects might miss important parts of the picture.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The prevailing industrial digitalisation flagship initiative, Industrie 4.0, gathers a substantial part of its functionality from the human in the system. This will drive a need for focus on both human and social dimensions of technology. The paper explores the roles of the Social Operator 4.0 in smart and social factory environments, where humans, machines and software systems will cooperate (socialise) in real-time to support manufacturing and services operations. A Social Factory Architecture based on adaptive, collaborative and intelligent multi-agent system is proposed for enabling such cooperation. Further, production scenarios are proposed, to show how social operators, social machines, and social software systems will communicate and cooperate via enterprise social networking services to accomplish production goals in the Social Internet of Things, Services and People.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238 .- 1868-422X. ; 459, s. 697-704
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is evidence that the environmental performances of factories operating under similar circumstances vary greatly, even within one company. This indicates that production sites are operated in different ways which suggests a potential for improvement. Previous research shows that collaboration within production networks can improve factory performance. Learning collaboratively across factories is a promising approach to reduce the environmental impact of production sites. Several companies recognised this opportunity. Processes and systems to support knowledge and know-how exchange within their production network are already in place. In this research a literature review and interviews were carried out to explore factors that influence learning between factories. Such factors are critical to develop an effective tool enabling learning across factories and thus environmental performance improvements.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the social implications of introducing a new technology into the product-service system (PSS) of electronic waste management (EWM). Using a previously established set of social sustainability key performance indicators (KPIs) targeting the operations level (i.e. impacts on EWM operators), social implications are examined in a case where a specific innovative new technology is introduced to replace manual sorting of e-waste into re-use, refurbish and recycle fractions. The social sustainability KPIs were applied to the case as a structured interview guide. The results showed that the KPI framework provided a good basis for examining the social impacts and also stimulated discussions about potential business impacts based on the human resources in the system. The framework showed that the implementation supported proactive social sustainability, but some additional conditions need to be addressed by the customer organization to make sure that potential risks (identified in the interview) are mitigated.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advantages put forward for so-called Smart working may sound very appealing. However, it is unlikely that all stakeholder groups involved will benefit to the same extent, if at all. Many initiatives that seem to be aimed at development of Smart work systems can be seen to be flawed, since they are suggested to support empowerment but are expressed in terms of pre-defined ‘best practice’. This inherent paradox leads to consideration of ways in which innovation could occur that would lead to genuinely Smart systems, harnessing Smart technologies and empowering engaged actors to co-create meaningful practice in pursuit of professional excellence. An open, socio-technical systems approach is suggested to be the way forward.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 1868-4238. ; 545, s. 206-216
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To test the effect of adjuvant on the efficacy of herbicides in a fast and non-destructive way is very helpful for selecting a right spray adjuvant for herbicide, which is an important strategy to enhance the efficacy of herbicides, reduce application dose, and enhance environmental safety. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory and greenhouse to study the effect of 2 adjuvants - Methylated seed oil (MSO) and organosilicone on the efficacy of topramezone on grass weed giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.) and broadleaved weed velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.) using weed leaves chlorophyll fluorescence measurement and whole plant biomass test. The results indicated that the top leaf maximum quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) of two weeds treated by herbicide mixed with MSO adjuvant was significantly lower than that of treated by herbicide alone from the 2-3 days after treatment, while the difference between treatments of herbicide mixed with organosilicone adjuvant and herbicide applied alone was not significant. Results of the whole-plant pot tests showed biomass of the treatment of topramezone mixed with MSO was significantly lower than that of herbicide applied alone. This is similar to the result of chlorophyll fluorescence test. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurement has proven to be an attractive tool for studying the effect of the adjuvants on the efficacy of herbicide.

    • Our everyday experiences show that the lack of needed information in various human affairs may give rise to consequences that we would like to avoid – e.g. the 2004 Tsunami in Southeast Asia. However, we still do not have a coherent theoretical body that addresses such experiences of information inadequacy as this changes everything in respect to the current conception of the information society, where technology plays a central role. To this end, we provide an initial exploration of opportunities for such a theory: when needed information is not available in human affairs, for any reason. We start with diagnoses of five existing central theoretical bodies that constitute promising candidates to account for instances of information inadequacy. The results show though that these do not offer a comprehensive account for situations where needed information is missing. Secondly, an empirical investigation was conducted, utilizing grounded theory approach, where fifty cases of information inadequacy were analysed. This revealed a number of patterns of plausible causes of information inadequacies in human affairs, which offer a preliminary foundation for a future theory of information inadequacy. This result suggests that information inadequacies may be understood as various instances of information-lack and information-overflow. These two, in turn, include numerous factors that cause information inadequacies, ranging from political and cultural structures, through human individual capabilities, and ending with procedural set-ups and technological artefacts. We advocate that further research should be conducted to explore various instances of information inadequacy aimed to the formulation of a coherent theory.
