  • What difference does the gig mobility service make in the workers’ human needs structure?

    • This paper aims to compare and contrast the perceived psychological experience of the traditional versus gig mobility service workers with respect to their human needs structure. Gig mobility service here refers to on-demand transportation service enabled by an online platform. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. Using the perspective of ERG (Existence, Relatedness and Growth) theory, we first explored the field using in-depth interviews and observations of both worker groups. Based on the qualitative findings, we formulated the quantitative measures for the corresponding constructs. The constructs’ relationship and paths differences between the two groups were analyzed statistically using partial least square path modeling (PLS-PM) method. The differences between the two groups were categorized into four quadrants, highlighting what both groups have and do not have, as well as what one group has but not the other. It was found that the gig mobility service resulted in not only more relationships among the constructs, but also generally higher perceived well-being for the workers. It seems that the gig mobility service has so far been promising in meeting workers human needs despite its long-term uncertainty. This study is among the few studies on understanding in which way the technology has changed the mobility service actors seen as workers, rather than sellers or users.

  • Distance effects on visual search and visually guided freehand interaction on large displays

    • Different from mouse-based and touch-based interactions at a static distance, motion-sensing interaction on a large display is typically performed at varying distances ranging from an arm's length to several metres. To investigate the effect of distance on visual search and freehand interaction performance, an empirical experiment was conducted; 30 participants were recruited to complete a series of target search and freehand selection tasks on large displays, which were 1.6 and 2.4 m wide, respectively. The results indicated that (1) the user-preferred viewing distance was positively related to the physical size of the display: a larger display size corresponded to a larger viewing distance. (2) The viewing distance had a two-sided effect on the visual search time efficiency. At a close range, increasing distance improved the search time efficiency; but at a farther range, the efficiency decreased. (3) An optimal field of view at which visual search was most efficient was found; (4) however, increasing the distance lowered freehand interaction efficiency and accuracy. Changing the distance also caused variations in the performance on divided large display areas: (5) the visual search efficiency on the upper area was higher than that on the lower area, increasing the distance reduced the difference; (6) freehand interaction efficiency and accuracy on the lower area outperformed that on the upper area, increasing the distance also reduced the difference. Implications were discussed for building more efficient and user-friendly large display-based user interfaces.

  • An assembly organization's approach to conducting ergonomics assessments of nutrunners in the absence of standards

    • Repetitive use of handheld nutrunners contributes to the development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among assembly operators. Tool-using organizations control the physical exposures resulting from nutrunners through their own, company-specific methods and recommendations. The aim of this study was to explore an automotive organization's current practice when conducting ergonomics assessments of nutrunner use. Fourteen employees representing different professional roles within the automotive manufacturing organization were interviewed about their involvement in, and approaches to, ergonomics evaluations of nutrunners. Findings show that the objective criteria tightening torque and tool type are combined with the operators' subjective assessments of the load to identify MSD risks associated with nutrunner use. This way, the effects of factors such as working posture could be integrated into the assessment. Further, it was found that information and knowledge availability could influence the resulting exposures estimates, where for example information about how to appropriately select tool settings is not readily available. In addition, there are negotiating criteria such as quality considerations which need to be balanced with health and safety management, influencing the physical demands associated with power tools. Relevance to industry: By providing insight into an automotive manufacturer's approach to managing and assessing handheld tightening tools, policy-makers can form recommended limits and methods for standardized assessments of reaction load exposure from nutrunners.

  • Reaction load exposure from handheld powered tightening tools : A scoping review

    • Assembly workers using handheld powered tightening tools are repetitively subjected to reaction loads resulting from the tool handle. Despite the vast amount of research, tool manufacturers and OSH practitioners still lack well-grounded recommendations and benchmarks for ergonomics evaluations of reaction loads. This review provides an overview of research investigating reaction loads and operator physical demand, and identifies gaps in current means of evaluating reaction load exposure from tightening tools. A scoping review was conducted, scanning for quantifications of reaction loads as well as reported indications of MSD risks following tightening tool use. Suggested maximum exposures for reaction loads were further identified. The most commonly investigated quantities among the 40 publications included, were peak reaction force/torque (70%) and handle displacement (70%), followed by impulse (23%). Pneumatic tools were studied at greater extent (65%) than electric tools (30%). Three studies presented a relationship between reaction load exposure and physiological changes, i.e. edema, tissue oxygenation and blood volume changes, indicating an elevated risk of developing MSDs. Four publications proposed values for maximum reaction load exposure, expressed as either reaction torque, handle displacement, or tightening torque. To conclude, strategies for developing recommendations for reaction load exposure are suggested. Less investigated reaction parameters, e.g. impulse, can carry additional relevant information regarding exposure. Exposure values should be expressed as physical quantities of the reaction load rather than tightening torque. Recommendations are further needed for various tool handle-configurations, emphasizing the increasingly used electric tools. Such recommendations can eventually contribute to reducing MSDs resulting from tightening tool use.

  • Interactions between Human, Technology and Organization in Building Information Modelling (BIM) - A scoping review of critical factors for the individual user

    • Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a process, often mentioned as an enabler of various benefits within Architecture – Engineering – Construction (AEC), of creating and managing information for a built asset. Despite the potential benefits associated with BIM, the use seems to have been relatively inefficient. One explanation may be the lack of system perspective in the implementation and use of BIM. The aim of this study was to map critical factors influencing the use of BIM based on existing research, including interactions among the three subsystems human, technology and organization. A scoping review was performed analyzing 46 included articles. The results showed that BIM is a holistic and social system, that the technology itself is insufficient, and that the acceptance of BIM is a significant critical factor for its efficient implementation and use. The research on how humans interact with the technology of BIM, and how the organization can facilitate those interactions, is however limited. Relevance to industry: Learnings from this study include that the AEC industry, by approaching BIM as a holistic and social system and recognizing the role of the individual user, can add another piece of the puzzle to achieving the effective use of BIM.

  • Feasibility of methods for early formative control room system evaluation

    • In a nuclear power plant, human factors evaluation is an important activity in the design of the control room system to ensure safe operation. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of methods for early formative evaluation of nuclear power plant control room systems, that is to say assessment of more general design decisions. Two methods were chosen for the assessment, scenario-based talkthrough and heuristic evaluation, and they were tested in three nuclear power plant control room system modification projects. The two methods were found useful and suitable for early formative evaluation. The combination of the methods makes it possible to take advantage of the strengths of both methods. Using guidelines focuses the evaluation on identifying typical design problems, while using a scenario-based use-focused approach allows identifying problems less typical and more unique for the specific design being evaluated. Doing the latter thoroughly result in a recourse-intensive evaluation, but this can be countered by trading some of the thoroughness for efficiency by using guidelines in the evaluation. Proposals for future work include improving the method combination by providing better support for adapting the implementation of the methods, as well as for the practical execution of the evaluation activity. Future work should also include further investigation of the method combination's usefulness, for example in other domains.

  • Effects of a training intervention for Swedish pig transport drivers on physical workload and time efficiency during loading

    • Slaughter transportation of pigs can be considered a high-risk occupation, but has received very little scientific attention. We investigated the effect of a training intervention on transport drivers’ physical workload, in terms of postures and movements, and time efficiency during loading of finishing pigs for slaughter transport. The training targeted pig handling and ergonomic working principles and was expected to decrease physical workload and loading time per pig, due to less aversive handling and less stress-related pig behaviour. Inclinometric recordings of elevation and velocity of upper arms were used to assess workload before and after training. Seventeen drivers were studied during loading of 4,721 pigs at 36 loadings on 31 Swedish farms under varying conditions. Eleven of the drivers were trained and 10 of these were observed also after training. Overall mean peak loads for right arm elevation, right arm velocity and loading time per pig were 56.4°, 184°/s and 16.2 s, respectively. We were unable to confirm our hypotheses regarding effects of training on physical workload and loading time.

    • Working conditions of 20 Swedish pig transport drivers (PTD) were assessed by a questionnaire, a workshop, and recorded postures and movements during on-farm loading, driving, unloading at abattoir and vehicle cleaning. High arm positions and high frequencies of shoulder problems indicated an excessive physical load on shoulders. Extreme crouching postures inside vehicles and high frequencies of lower back problems indicated high load on the back of PTDs. Inadequate design of on-farm loading areas was associated with knee discomfort. Observed variation in workload between PTDs could be explained by differences in physical working environment and pig handling practices. PTDs reported high job satisfaction and commitment although conflicts with farmers and official veterinarians, as well as regulatory conflicts were emphasized. We conclude that issues of inadequate farm and abattoir facilities, stakeholder conflicts and insufficient training in animal handling need to be addressed to ensure sustainable PTD working conditions.

  • Cooling garments against environmental heat conditions in occupational fields : measurements of the effect of a ventilation jacket on the total thermal insulation

    • Personal cooling garments (PCGs) can represent an adaptation solution to counteract heat strain and to improve worker's health and productivity (especially for some outdoor work activities as in agriculture and in the construction industry). The cooling effect of a ventilation jacket was preliminarily investigated carrying out “dry” tests in a climatic chamber on a thermal manikin. A standardized condition with air temperature, ta = 22.4 °C, three different adjustments of the fan velocity (vf= 0, vf = 2 and vf = 4), and three different ensembles (the single jacket, a work ensemble and a combination of both) were considered. Results showed significant increases in dry heat losses (through convection) for the trunk thermal zones, higher when the fans were on, for all the ensembles considered. Percent changes greatly exceeded 100 % for the thermal zones close to the fans. The air ventilation determined significant decreases of the total thermal insulation (IT) values (up to 35 %) compared to the fans-off condition, confirming and quantifying the cooling effect of the ventilation jacket.
