    • Background: In qualitative research, the relation between the researcher and the informants requires reflection. This is particularly important where researchers and fields are closely linked, e.g. through professional education or work experience.Aim: To examine how qualitative nursing researchers reflect upon their membership in the groups or areas being studied. Methods: By employing content analysis, the article investigates how articles in the Nordic Journal for Nursing Research reflect upon researcher positioning. The sample includes 57 articles using qualitative research methods.Result: We find a lack of reflections regarding the researchers' position, but to the extent it is done, we often find variations of an ideal wherein educated nurses are seen as being in a privileged position to conduct qualitative research within the health care sector. We analyse this ideal in light of the emergence of nursing science as discipline, and in light of the “insider / outsider” debate in the social sciences. Conclusion: While this ideal contains valid aspects related to experience-based insights and practice related knowledge, it also contains a normative dimension where justifications of the researchers’ own positions are important.

  • The influence of flow culture on nurses’ use of research in emergency care: An ethnographic study
  • 2015
  • In: Klinisk Sygepleje. - : Universitetsforlaget. - 0902-2767 .- 1903-2285. ; 29:2, s. 16-34
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Within the field of implementation science there is increasing recognition of the relevance of organizational context and culture, i.e. influences beyond the individual level, for successful implementation of evidence-based nursing practices. Applying the Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), the aim of this study was to explore how the organizational culture in an emergency department in Denmark influenced nurses’ priorities with regard to the use of research. The study was designed as an ethnographic inquiry based on fieldwork and semi-structured interviews. Based on an activity system analysis, the concept of flow culture emerged. This culture is defined as a cultural–historical activity system, mediated by artefacts, in which the objective of the nursing staff is primarily to free up beds, thus ensuring a flow of patients. A flow culture leads to a strong focus on securing vacant beds which impeded the nurses’ use of research in everyday clinical practice.

  • Praksisrefleksion I hjemmesygepleje – et koncept for kompetenceudvikling
  • 2013
  • In: Klinisk Sygepleje. - 1903-2285. ; 27:1, s. 39-49
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • As a consequence of the municipality reform and the consequent move of services from hospital to primary healthcare, a Danish municipal wished to strengthen the professional competences, fellow-feeling, and collegiate spirit of their community nurses, taking their starting point in their newly developed ‘profile for community nurses’. This article presents a concept for reflection on practice which consists of a competence-developmental project. The project originates from Wacherhausen’s theory of reflection on practice, in ‘Appreciative Inquiry’, comprising appreciatory communication, and in the method ‘The narrative team-reflection’. The concept is about the community nurses in practicing and analyzing appreciatory communication here and now and in giving and receiving constructive mono- and inter-professional feedback. In conclusion, the developed concept for reflection on practice generates fellow-feeling, strengthens the community nurses’ professional competences and promotes collegiate spirit and engagement. The concept can easily be applied to other professionals and/or to other themes for practice development.
