  • Funktionalistisk samhällsanalys. En kritisk granskning.
  • 1964
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An attempt is made to characterize different types of functionalistic analysis with respect to their scienti¬fic properties e.g. their requirement of confirmation. The most ambitious type of analysis, the complete functionalistic explanation, seems difficult to realize with respect to logical and confirmational prerequisites. Existing attempts e.g. regarding social stratification and incest tabus do not fulfil these requirements. Another type of functional analysis, the incomplete functionalistic explanation seems more possible but is of less scientific interest. The theleological character of certain functionalistic approaches implies serious disadvantages e. g. disregards causal chains. The lack of criterion of functional adequacy often leads to a conservative bias in functional analysis.

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report contains a descriptive, demographic study of the total Swedish population 1930, 1940, 1950, and 1960 as to marriage and marriage dissolution. The age, sex, and marital atatus distributions of the population over 15 years are discussed. Marriage intensities of different sex, age (one-year classes), and marital status classes are computed and discussed. Dissolution intensities are also discussed, but due to insufficiences of the data available, it has not been possible to determine them for all classes. Two different measures are used simultaneously in computing the marriage intensities; one simpler and one more exact. The results obtained by the two different methods are compared and discussed. A methodological discussion is to be found in an appendix, as is also a discussion of the material used.

  • Påverkan, utbyte och makt. En kritisk analys av några modeller och teorier om makt och interaktion.
  • 1965
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The following paper tries to integrate different theoretical explitions of the power concept. A distinction is mad between two types of power; power as an actual or possible causal process and power as actual or possible exchange of value (1). Certain assumptions of the assymmetric character of power is analysed and critizised (2). Dahl´s attempt to define and operationalized the causal interpretation of power is discussed in a following section (3). Homans, Thibaut & Kelley´s and Harsanyi´s theoretical models of interaction value exchange and power are critically analysed and compared and certain components of power are defined (Section 4-6). In the last section the applicability of these power models and power components are discussed and comparisons are made whit oteher theories of power dimensions and power relations.

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This Research Report consists of five artics, all of which concern the process of "Job-choice". In the first article, written by Olsson and Rundblad, a method of choice-analysis is applied, originally outlined by Boalt & Janson at the University of Stockholm. Dahlström and Sjöstrand, in the nest articles, discuss some of the methodological difficulties that arise througt the application of the Boalt - jansson-model. Dahlström here suggests a dodification of their model, which, in the fourth article, he make an attempt to test, thereby somparing his results with those obtained by Olsson - Rundblad. In the last article, finally, Dahlström suggests a more general fram of of reference for the analysis of individual choice - or change - mechanisms in the job-sphere.

  • En manual för planering av Sociologiska undersökningar
  • 1964
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A manual for sociological survey design is sketched. The investigator is consulted ta solve a problem that has no theoretical background. The manual tries to guide the investigator towards a systematic behavior which will 1) give him knowledge about the quality of collected data and 2) lead him to search for an optimum of the relation between quality and resources and 3) give the client a piece of research that has a quality equivalent to his intentions. The problems the investigator meets and has to solve are outlined. Alternatives for behaviour and criterias for decisions are briefly suggested. The data collection, analysis of results, and presentation of th findings are regarded as the direct application of the design.

  • Convergence of excitatory and inhibitory action on interneurones in the lumbosacral cord
  • 1966
  • Ingår i: Experimental Brain Research. - 0014-4819 .- 1432-1106. ; 1, s. 338-358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intracellular recording has been made in spinal cats from more than 100 interneurones in the dorsal horn and intermediary region of the lumbosacral spinal cord. The majority of interneurones receive not only EPSPs but also IPSPs from primary afferents. The IPSPs are evoked from three different systems, group I muscle afferents (probably Ib), low threshold cutaneous afferents and the FRA. The shortest central latency of the IPSPs indicates a disynaptic linkage from primary afferents. Interneurones with monosynaptic EPSPs from group I muscle afferents may receive IPSPs from all the above mentioned afferent systems. Interneurones with monosynaptic EPSPs from cutaneous afferents receive their inhibition from the two latter afferent systems. Convergence of EPSPs and IPSPs from the FRA may occur on the same interneurone. The results are discussed mainly with respect to inhibitory interaction between spinal reflex pathways. © 1966 Springer-Verlag.

  • Effects from the sensorimotor cortex on the spinal cord in cats with transected pyramids
  • 1967
  • Ingår i: Experimental Brain Research. - 0014-4819 .- 1432-1106. ; 3, s. 117-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Effects of stimulation of the sensorimotor cortex on activity of the lumbosacral cord were studied in pyramidotomized cats. The following actions initiated by corticofugal volleys were found: 1. postsynaptic effects on motoneurones, mainly excitatory in flexor motoneurones and inhibitory or excitatory in extensor motoneurones, 2. facilitation of spinal reflexes to motoneurones at an interneuronal level, 3. depolarization of presynaptic terminals of group Ib and cutaneous fibres. The latencies of the earliest cortical effects on motoneurones as indicated by modification of monosynaptic reflexes or PSPs were 9-12 msec. Experiments with lesions of different spinal tracts suggest that the effects on motoneurones are mediated mainly by pathways in the ventral part of the lateral funiculus (probably reticulospinal), the facilitation of reflex transmission by pathways in the dorsal part of the lateral funiculus (probably rubrospinal) and primary afferent depolarization by both the former and the latter pathways. The strongest cortical effects were evoked by stimulation of an area around the postcruciate dimple. © 1967 Springer-Verlag.

  • Post‐synaptic excitation and inhibition from primary afferents in neurones of the spinocervical tract
  • 1968
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physiology. - : Wiley. - 0022-3751 .- 1469-7793. ; 199, s. 569-592
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. Intra‐ and extracellular recordings were made from cells of the spinocervical tract in the lumbosacral spinal cord. A convergence of monosynaptic excitatory post‐synaptic potentials (EPSPs) and disynaptic inhibitory post‐synaptic potentials (IPSPs) was a general pattern of effects from the low threshold cutaneous fibres. Unitary IPSPs, probably mediated via the same disynaptic path, were evoked by light touch of hairs, which was also the adequate stimulus for exciting the cells. The receptive field for unitary IPSPs was closely related to the excitatory receptive field but was eccentric, not of a surround type. 2. EPSPs, IPSPs, or both, were evoked from the flexor reflex afferents in the great majority of neurones. Disynaptic IPSPs may be evoked from the interosseous nerve. No effects were produced by volleys in group I muscle afferents. 3. It is suggested, on the basis of the spatial organization of the excitatory and inhibitory receptive skin fields, that the spinocervical tract may give information regarding the direction of tactile stimuli. © 1968 The Physiological Society

  • The rubrospinal tract. I. Effects on alpha-motoneurones innervating hindlimb muscles in cats
  • 1969
  • Ingår i: Experimental Brain Research. - 0014-4819 .- 1432-1106. ; 7, s. 344-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. The effect of stimulation of the red nucleus on lumbosacral motoneurones was investigated in cats with conditioning of monosynaptic test reflexes and intracellular recording. 2. Experimental procedures were adopted to assure that the effect of stimulation was mediated by the rubrospinal tract. 3. Excitation of flexor and inhibition of extensor motoneurones is common but a mixture of EPSPs and IPSPs is found in many motoneurones. In some extensor (particularly toe extensor) motor nuclei there is dominating excitation. 4. Differential effects are found in motor nuclei innervating fast and slow muscles, excitation being more prevalent in the former and inhibition in the latter. 5. For both EPSPs and IPSPs the minimal synaptic linkage is disynaptic but in one exceptional case a monosynaptic EPSP was observed. 6. The results are discussed in relation to other findings regarding the interneuronal organization in the spinal cord. © 1969 Springer Verlag.

  • The rubrospinal tract. II. Facilitation of interneuronal transmission in reflex paths to motoneurones
  • 1969
  • Ingår i: Experimental Brain Research. - 0014-4819 .- 1432-1106. ; 7, s. 365-391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. The effect of stimulation of the red nucleus on transmission of synaptic actions from different systems of primary afferents to alpha motoneurones has been investigated in cats, mainly with intracellular recording from motoneurones. 2. The dominating effect is facilitation, presumably caused by excitatory action exerted from the rubrospinal tract on interneurones of reflex arcs. The time course of facilitation suggests that the minimal linkage from the rubrospinal tract to these interneurones is monosynaptic. 3. Interneuronal transmission in reflex pathways from the following afferent systems is facilitated: a) Ia inhibitory between flexors and extensors. Rubrospinal facilitation did not reveal Ia inhibitory pathways between adductors and abductors at the hip. b) Ib excitatory and inhibitory. There is marked facilitation of the reciprocal effects evoked by Ib afferents from extensors but also of other Ib pathways, for example inhibitory from extensors to flexor nuclei and from flexors to extensor nuclei and excitatory from flexors to extensor nuclei. c) Low threshold joint, inhibitory and excitatory, presumably from afferents with Ruffini endings. d) Low threshold cutaneous, excitatory and inhibitory. Since transmission from these afferents could be facilitated under conditions when there was no effect on transmission from high threshold muscle afferents it is postulated that the effect is exerted on pathways which are not part of the common pathways from the flexor reflex afferents. e) Plexor reflex afferents, excitatory and inhibitory. Facilitation of these pathways is not found regularly, in some cases there was no effect and in others inhibition. 4. The effects are discussed in relation to the complex effects evoked from the rubrospinal tract in motoneurones and to supraspinal regulation of proprioceptive reflexes. 5. It is postulated that in complex movements alternative Ib patterns may be mobilized, whereas flexion-extension movements are subserved by the Ib pattern found in the spinal cat. 6. Facilitation of the Ia inhibitory pathway is taken to indicate "α-γ-linkage" in reciprocal inhibition. It is pointed out that convergence from Ia and descending impulses on a common inhibitory interneurone may play an important role in the regulation of α-γ-linked flexion-extension movements. © 1969 Springer Verlag.

  • The Effect of DOPA on the Spinal Cord 5. Reciprocal organization of pathways transmitting excitatory action to alpha motoneurones of flexors and extensors
  • 1967
  • Ingår i: Acta Physiologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-6772 .- 1365-201X. ; 70, s. 369-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In unanaesthetized spinal cats, injected with L‐DOPA, volleys in the flexor reflex afferents (FRA) evoke a long‐latency, longlasting discharge in ipsilateral flexor and contralateral extensor motoneurones. It is postulated that this discharge is transmitted by a neuronal pathway which is inhibited in the normal acute spinal cat, presumably from the pathway, which in this state transmits the shortlatency effect from the FRA to motoneurones. The organization of the pathway released by an injection of DOPA has been analyzed by recording the discharges in efferents to flexors and extensors and with intracellular records from motoneurones. Combined stimulation of ipsilateral and contralateral FRA reveals a reciprocal organization in that either flexor or extensor motoneurones are activated. Transmission from the ipsilateral FRA to flexor motoneurones can be inhibited by volleys in the contralateral FRA, and transmissiqn from the contralateral FRA to extensor motoneurones by volleys in the ipsilateral FRA. These inhibitory effects are neither produced postsynaptically in the motoneurones nor presynaptically by depolarization of primary afferents and are hence exerted at an interneuronal level. The organization of reciprocal innervation at an interneuronal level is discussed in relation to the primary afferent depolarization evoked in Ia afferent terminals after DOPA and to rhythmic alternating movements. © 1967 Scandinavian Physiological Society

  • 1967
  • Ingår i: Acta Physiologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-6772 .- 1365-201X. ; 70, s. 389-402
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In unanaesthetized spinal cats a systematic microelectrode exploration has been made in the lumbosacral spinal cord in order to find interneurones that may transmit the late longlasting reflex effects that volleys in the FRA (flexor reflex afferents) evoke after an intravenous injection of DOPA. Interneurones that may transmit these late effects are found in the lateral part of Rexed's layer VII and three main types are identified: A) cells activated from the ipsilateral FRA and inhibited from the contralateral FRA, B) cells activated from the contralateral FRA and inhibited from the ipsilateral FRA, C) cells activated from both the ipsilateral and contralateral FRA. The receptive fields and other criteria employed suggest that type A and B transmit excitatory action to flexor and extensor motoneurones respectively, and type C depolatization to Ia afferent terminals. The functional organization of these pathways is discussed mainly in relation to the mechanisms responsible for the long latency and duration of the discharge. © 1967 Scandinavian Physiological Society

  • Translocation of AChE-containing particles in the axoplasm during nerve activity
  • 1969
  • Ingår i: Comparative Biochemistry And Physiology. - 0010-406X. ; 28, s. 907-913
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. 1. In dog peroneal nerves the rate of axoplasmic transport of AChE-containing particles was not altered by prolonged repetitive stimulation at 110/sec when over 1,500,000 nerve impulses had been generated. 2. 2. The direction of impulse conduction had no effect on polar differences in accumulation of AChE at the proximal and distal ends of the isolated nerve segment. 3. 3. The apparent independence between action potentials and axoplasmic streaming in nerve fibres contrasts sharply with the arrest of streaming caused by stimulation of plant cells. © 1969.

  • Utstötta. En intervjuundersökning bland missbrukare av centralstimulerande medel.
  • 1969
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • About 1959 attention first was drawn to the abuse of stimulant drugs in Sweden. Swedish laws now now define these drugs as narcotics. This paper is the result of interviews with 50 abusers in Gothenburg. All of them have administred the drugs intravenously with the mean of about 6 years of abuse. Addiction to stimulants is seen as a process where the perception of the effects is changed, and the addicted feels normal only when he is intoxicated The psychological dependence of the addicts is shown when they, in search for the drug, spend all their time and energy, no longer follow internalized norms nor break the laws. Abuse is going on in continously changing groups. The minimum of cohesivness is the result of the social control from outside. In these groups you also find the knowledge of actual supply or the distributers. To hide the forbidden behavior from the society and even from friends and relatives and to secure the supply the addicts have to cope whit the group. In the process of addiction beginners learn to behave as addicts, to accept the habits and attitudes of the grouo as well as to live in a society where buying the drug is illegal.

  • The Family and Social Change in Ghana.
  • 1967
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The paper deals with the effect of social change on the family and marriage institutions in Ghana. (1) An examination of the matrilineal family system of the Ashanti shows that bond between mother and child is very strong and that the lineage plays a very decisive part in the life of member. (2) Industrialisation, urbanisation, christianity, education and the introduction of cocoa have all contributed to the process of change being experienced in the country today. (3) Ghana´s contact with the Mohammedan and Christian religions has resulted in the fact that these religions have left an indelible mark on the marriage customs of the country. (4) Cross-cousin marriage and widow inheritance are on a decline. There is a trend towards conjugal family and an increasing recognition of patrilineal inheritance has been observed. Members of the younger generation are rebelling against the older generation´s constant attempt to interfere in their marital affairs. Independence of judgement in such matters is the goal of the average young Ghanaian.

    • Is it possible to increase human interaction merely by functional planning of the physical anviroment? This study is a survey of literature at this subject. An attempt is made to show that the physical anviroment (such as distances between houses or buildings for special activities) is a subordinate factor in the process of human interaction. Other factors are shown to be more important.
