- Cholesteryl sodium sulphate (CS) crystallizes as the dihydrate, the crystal structure of which is known. On heating the dihydrate, solid state phase transitions are observed at 65 degrees C and 95 degrees C and melting occurs at 165 degrees C. The structure of the high temperature phase has not been determined. Cholesteryl dihydrogen phosphate (CP) is not isostructural with any phases of CS. It undergoes a phase transition at 50 degrees C and melts at 190 degrees C. In systems with water CS is unstable whereas it was possible to determine the phase diagram of CP. In most of the composition range a crystalline hydrate is in equilibrium with a gel-phase. The latter has remarkable properties in that lamellar order exists with the 46 A lipid bilayer interleaved with water layers up to 1000 A. The monofilm behaviour of CS and CP at different pH levels is also reported.

- O-Ethyl S-(I l-carboxyundecyl)dithiocarbonate (CJ5H~8S203) is triclinic (pT) with a=7·534, b=4·797, c=25·304 A, 0:=90·83, jJ=90·72 and y=79·71°. The bond distances and angles agree very well with those reported earlier for the homologue with a shorter carbon chain (C5). The conformations are also very similar in the two compounds. The ethyl end of one molecule just reaches S(2) of a neighbouring one. This results in a packing with only small regions of lateral hydrocarbon chain packing. The chain arrangement cannot be described by any known subcell.

The Concepts of Holism and Reductionism in Sociological Theory.

- The present study is an attempt to clarify some aspects of the controversy between holism and reductionisrn in sociological theory. What are the theoretical and non-theoretical motives behind classical holistic and reductionistic approaches to sociological theory? Are they chiefly ontological, epistemological, normative or of a more practical nature? An analytical framework making it possible to draw distinctions of these types is set up. The framework is then used to investigate three classical sociological theories, those of Durkheim, Spencer and Homans, exemplifying three distinct approaches to the holist-reductionist controversy. It is hoped that through the analytical framework developed a clearer understanding of the controversy in classical theory can be gained, and that this in turn will facilitate an understanding of the same issue in contemporary sociology.

- The effects of piperidine HCl (PHCl) on locomotor activity, flexor reflex activity and monoamine levels, turnover, and synthesis were studied. Results indicate a sedative action and an increased turnover of noradrenaline (NA), but no effects on 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) or dopamine (DA). Data obtained from flexor reflex experiments suggest that this is not secondary to alpha-adrenergic receptor blockade. One explanation might be an increased impulse activity of NA neurons, but the exact mechanism remains to be elucidated.

- The projection of individual pyramidal tract (PT) neurons from the hindlimb area in the precentral gyrus of the cerebral cortex to the lumbar spinal cord was studied in the monkey by systematically searching for sites within identified regions of the spinal gray from which the PT neurons could be antidromically activated by local stimulation. All investigated neurons belonged to the fast conducting fraction of PT neurons. The following results were obtained. 1. Each PT neuron could be activated from more than one region of the spinal gray matter, including identified spinal motor nuclei and areas dorsomedial to these nuclei, but not the intermediate nucleus or regions dorsal to it. "Passage areas" and "termination areas" were defined. 2. Half of the PT neurons with termination areas within motor nuclei had these areas in more than one nucleus. There were thus strong suggestions for synaptic contacts of some PT neurons with motoneurons of more than one muscle. 3. Four groups of three or four neurons were recorded simultaneously by the same cortical electrode. Comparisons of passage and termination areas within groups revealed both similarities and differences in projections of neighboring neurons. Every neuron was activated from some region(s) where others of the group were not. Common passage areas, or passage and termination areas, for two or three neurons of a group within at least one motor nucleus were found for all groups. Termination areas in the same motor nucleus have been found for the majority of the neurons of only one group. These common projection areas are compatible with, but do not prove, that a group of adjacent PT neurons has common target cells in the spinal cord. © 1979 Springer-Verlag.

- An attempt is made to understand some obscure propositions in a classic within the marxist tradition: Geschichte und Klassenbewusstsein by George Lukács. Examples of interpretative formulations in the first part of the essay are: "Manifst functions mey generate latent dysfunctions" and "By whom vill latent dysfunctions be discovered?" A key theme in the second part revolves around the concepts of "internalization" and "externalization". It is argued that a central thesis in Geschichte und Klassenbewusstsein is that the device Deus ex machina is soaked with conservative ideology. The interpretation offered is very free. The intention is to enrich some trivial propositions in bourgeoisie sociology through contact whit the obscure propositions by Lukács - not the other way around.

- The concept of attitude is briefly and tentatively discussed from various viewpoints, viz. "attitudes" in ordinary language, "attitudes" within the context of the atrical performance, etc. The main argument is that "attitude" should be conceived of as an interpersonal phenomenon, not as an ontrapersonal phenomenon. The argument also entails that "attitudes" are public social events, not private mental states. The approach is methodologically soft and the underlying perspective is interactionistic.

Intrafusal muscle fibres of cat tenuissimus spindles have been injected with the fluorescent dye Procion Yellow and identified histologically after recording their changes in membrane potential during 1/sec stimulation of single static or dynamic gamma axons. 2. Thirteen intrafusal muscle fibres innervated by static gamma axons were identified as eight bag2 and five chain fibres. The fact that none proved to be a bag1 fibre is not regarded as significant, for reasons given in the Discussion. 3. In one spindle Procion Yellow was injected into two intrafusal muscle fibres activated by the same static gamma axon; they were identified as a bag2 and a chain fibre. 4. Nine intrafusal muscle fibres innervated by dynamic gamma axons were identified as seven bag1 fibres, one bag2 fibre, and one long chain fibre. 5. In one spindle two bag fibres were injected, one activated by a dynamic gamma axon, the other by a static gamma axon; the former proved to be a bag1 fibre, the latter a bag2 fibre. 6. Stimulation of static gamma axons elicited junctional potentials in seven bag2 fibres and one damaged chain fibre, and action potentials in one bag2 and four chain fibres. In the whole sample of impaled intrafusal muscle fibres (identified and unidentified) activated by static axons, junctional potentials were recorded from twenty‐three (62.2%), and action potentials from fourteen (37.8%). Stimulation of dynamic gamma axons always elicited junctional potentials. 7. In a number of instances it was possible to examine the ultrastructure of motor endings belonging to the stimulated gamma axon. The myoneural junctions of trail endings supplied by static gamma axons to bag2 and chain fibres were both smooth and folded; the deepest and most regular folding occurred on chain fibres. The terminals of p2 plates supplied to bag1 fibres by dynamic gamma axons had smooth myoneural junctions. © 1978 The Physiological Society
