Internal Bremsstrahlung Accompanying the Positon Decay of 82Rb

- The internal bremsstrahlung from the positon decay of 82Rb has been measured in the energy ranges 0.95-1.3 and 1.7-2.0 MeV. The measured intensity was about twice the value predicted by the charge-independent theory. The external bremsstrahlung produced in stopping the positons in Be, C and Al has been measured in the same energy intervals. Energies and intensities of the γ-rays from 82Rb have been determined, and a revised energy level diagram is proposed for 82Kr. Some of the γ-rays were observed for the first time.

- Antisera of mice hyperimmunized against syngeneic X‐irradiated adeno 12 tumor cells were tested for complement‐dependent cytotoxicity against an adeno 7 and an adeno 12 hamster tumor by a 51Cr‐cytotoxic test, developed to work on non‐lymphoid target cells. Significant isotope release above the level of release obtained after exposure to control sera was recorded with both tumors. There was no similar release from BHK‐C13 control hamster cells. The cytotoxic effect on hamster adeno 7 tumor cells was confirmed by the colony inhibition technique. Furthermore, it was demonstrated by transplantation tests in mice that the hamster adeno 7 tumor cells were immunogenic, causing an isograft immunity to adeno 12 tumors similar to that induced by adeno 12 hamster and mouse tumor cells.

- Compared to all other countries, the self-governing organisation of the Swedish Student Union has a unique position concerning its influence on Administration, Government and Parliament. Through the Teacher Union’s strike of 1966, its activities have become known in Germany. In particular, the students’ ability of organising lessons over an extended period of time has contributed to their popularity among some educators in Germany. Furthermore, all committee work of some import is passed to the Student Union for consideration and comments. Hence, Swedish student seem to be involved in all central question of import for external and internal work organisation. Many of their opinions have been integrated into Parliament decisions. Finally, Swedish students participate in teacher conferences on a regular basis and thereby contribute to educational decision making as well as to the reformulation of the curriculum. In principle, they are working for the continuing reformation of the Swedish School system.

- Schemes for the biosynthetic steps in the formation of the blood group active glycoproteins in secretions postulate that α-Image -fucosyltransferases specified by the Image and Image genes control the addition of Image -fucose to different acceptor sites in a precursor substance to give H, Lea and Leb serologically active structures. 1,2. The presence of 2-, 3- and 4-α-Image -fucosyl-transferases in submaxillary glands and stomach mucosal linings from persons who are secretors of ABH, and of 3- and 4-α-Image -fucosyltransferases in tissues from non-secretor persons, is described in this paper.

- The cellular localization of biogenic monoamines in crustaceans was studied by means of a highly specific and sensitive fluorescence method devised by Falck and Hillarp. It was found that neurons displaying specific fluorescence in the central nervous system were confined to the protocerebrum, the medulla externa and interna and the ventral nerve cord. The method allows a distinction between the fluorophores of 5-hydroxytryptamine (and 5-hydroxytryptophan), which emit the yellow light, and the fluorophores deriving from the catecholamines (and DOPA), which emit the green light. Green-fluorescent neurons occurred abundantly in the aforementioned parts of the central nervous system while yellow-fluorescent neurons were sparsely present in the same parts.

- The development of the compound eyes and nervous system of the penaeid shrimp,Penaeus duorarum, from the first nauplius to the first postlarva, has been studied. The first anlage of the compound eyes is a pair of optic discs on the front of the animal. These increase in size through cell-division until the second protozoea stage, where the eye-stalks appear with ommatidia and optic neuropiles developed. The original neuroectoderm of the optic discs is retained in the shape of a proliferation zone throughout the life of the animal. From the optic discs, develop the ommatidia, the lamina ganglionaris, and the medulla externa. The medullae interna and terminalis develop from cells coming from the brain anlage. From the second protozoea and onwards, the development is less rapid. The final shape of the adult eye is reached during the postlarval stages and includes the appearance of a few more pigments and a perfecting of several features. A scheme for the development of crustacean compound eyes is laid down. Further, the medulla externa of the Malacostraca and the single medulla of non-malacostracan crustaceans are homologized.The continuous growth of the nervous system is traced in the development of the neuropile. The appearance of glomeruli structures is reported, as are also, to some extent, neurosecretory organs. The development of the SPX-organ conforms to that of other decapods.For the sake of simplicity, the findings reported below in “Results” are grouped under two headings, namely “the eye-stalk“ and “the nervous system“. Under “the eye-stalk” will be described both the structures coming from the optic discs comprising the ommatidia, the lamina ganglionaris, and the medulla externa, and the contributions from the nervous system comprising the medulla terminalis and medulla interna. Under “the nervous system” will be described the rest of the nervous system. The term “anlage of the compound eyes” is the same as the optic discs and denotes all contributions from this area in the early larva.

- Pasiphaeid larvae collected in the Korsfjord, western Norway, were found to split up into two groups. Mainly two characteristics separated the larvae viz. the size of the larvae and the number of telson spines. The group with small larvae (8 to 10 mm) and the larger number of telson spines is referred to Pasiphaea multidentata and that with large larvae (10 to 12 mm) and fewer telson spines to Pasiphaea tarda. Embryos ready to hatch from an ovigerous female of Pasiphaea multidentata were dissected and it is shown that they resemble the small larvae above.
