  • Statehood, Secularisation, Cooperation : Explaining Democratic Survival in Inter-War Europe - Stein Rokkan's Conceptual Map Revisited
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Historical social research / Historische Sozialforschung. - Köln : Zentrum für historische Sozialforschung. - 0172-6404. ; 20:2, s. 210-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses itself to the crisis of democracy in inter-war Europe which saw the breakdown of one democratic regime after the other with Czechoslovakia as the only survivor case in Eastern and Central Europe by the end of this period. It is cast within the framework of Stein Rokkan's seminal conceptual map of Europe which is expanded in order to account for countries and variables originally not included in his analytical scheme. The analysis leads to the following conclusion: where the state building was weak and the legacy of empire strong, or where secular nation building was still impaired by deeply rooted religious sentiments, or where significant segments representing major cleavages where not coopted into a constitutional compromise, the chances for democratic survival in inter-war Europe were slim indeed. The conclusion applies to the inter-war era alone, but it clearly has implications for contemporary Europe. Noting that statehood and secularization ranked high on the agenda of communist Eastern Europe, the authors raise the paradoxical question if the success of democracy in this part of the world may in fact be a byproduct of the extent to which the now defunct communist regimes were successful in promoting their pet goals.

  • The View from EFTA
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Public Opinion and Internationalized Governance. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780198294764 ; , s. 344-367
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •  This chapter examines public opinion regarding European Community integration in the five small but comparatively prosperous countries in the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The evidence reveals a split. On the one hand, there is the positive endorsement expressed in Austria, Finland and Sweden; on the other, there is the negative assessment expressed in Norway and Switzerland. This ambivalence confirms that the impact of centre-periphery location is complex. Moreover, as the Norwegian and Swiss cases indicate, the centre-periphery cleavage within countries is as relevant as that between countries to an understanding of support for internationalized governance.

  • 1995
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Surgery. - Stockholm, Sweden : Taylor & Francis. - 1102-4151 .- 1741-9271. ; 161:8, s. 593-601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To assess the impact of a standard moderately severe surgical operation on the mucosal amino acid content of the duodenum and the colon.Design: Open study.Setting: University hospital, Sweden.Subjects: Nine patients who were to undergo elective open cholecystectomy.Interventions: Endoscopically obtained biopsy specimens from the intestinal mucosa. Main outcome measures: Changes in the content of free amino acids in the duodenum and colon at three days postoperatively. Results: The concentration of glutamine in the duodenum increased by 27% and that of glutamic acid by 34% after operation, whereas their content in colon remained unaltered. The concentration of branched chain amino acids increased by 26% in the duodenal mucosa after operation and by 24% in the colonic mucosa. The total concentration of amino acids (excluding taurine) increased by 9% in the duodenum, but remained unaltered in the colon. Conclusion: This study shows characteristic and consistent alterations in the free amino acid content of the intestinal tract after a moderately severe operation.

  • Intestinal amino acid content in critically ill patients
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: JPEN - Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. - : American Society for Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition. - 0148-6071 .- 1941-2444. ; 19:4, s. 272-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The purpose of the study was to determine the concentrations of free amino acids and the total protein content of the human intestinal mucosa during critical illness. Methods: The free amino acid and protein concentrations in endoscopically obtained biopsy specimens from the duodenum and the distal colonic segments were determined on 19 critically ill patients. The free amino acids were separated by ion exchange chromatography and detected by fluorescence, and the protein content was quantified by the method of Lowry. Results: In general, the typical amino acid pattern of the intestinal mucosa was seen, with very high levels of taurine, aspartate and glutamic acid. The main difference, as compared to a reference series of healthy subjects, was the elevated glutamine concentration of the duodenal mucosa. This amino acid was unaltered in the descending colon and depressed in the rectum. At the same time, the glutamatic acid concentrations were unaltered, suggesting that the degradation of glutamine was not increased in the septic state of the majority of the patients studied. Phenylalanine and the two branched-chain amino acids, valine and leucine, were elevated in the duodenal mucosa, and in the colonic mucosa, methionine and phenylalanine were elevated; otherwise, all the other individual amino acids were unaltered or depressed. Conclusions: The alterations seen in mucosal free amino acid and protein concentrations in connection with critical illness are different in many respects and contrast with the findings seen after starvation or moderate surgical trauma.

  • Short-term starvation alters the free amino acid content of human intestinal mucosa
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Clinical Science. - : Portland Press. - 0143-5221 .- 1470-8736. ; 86:6, s. 653-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. The effects of short-term starvation and refeeding on the free amino acid concentrations of the intestinal mucosa were characterized in male subjects (n=6), using endoscopically obtained biopsy specimens from the duodenum and from all four segments of the colon.2. The alterations in the amino acid concentrations in response to short-term starvation were overall uniform in both duodenal and colonic mucosa as well as in plasma. Most amino acids decreased, whereas branched-chain amino acids increased.3. In the colon, glutamic acid and glutamine decreased during the starvation period, whereas they remained unaltered in the duodenum. This was the major difference in response to short-term starvation between the amino acid concentrations in the intestinal mucosa of the duodenum and colon.4. Refeeding for 3 days normalized the amino acid concentrations except for glutamic acid, asparagine and histidine, which remained low in the colon, and threonine, which showed an overshoot in both parts of the intestine. S. The changes in mucosal amino acid concentrations seen in response to starvation and refeeding were uniform in the four segments of the colon. This suggests that sampling from the rectum/sigmoid colon will give representative values for the free amino acid concentrations of the entire large intestine.

  • Evidence for reversible, non-microtubule and non-microfilament-dependent nuclear translocation of hsp90 after heat shock in human fibroblasts
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cell Biology. - 0171-9335 .- 1618-1298. ; 58:2, s. 356-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A monoclonal antibody (29A) directed against rat liver heat shock protein M(r) 90,000 (hsp90) was produced. By Western immunoblotting of cytosols prepared from several different tissues and species, 29A was shown to specifically recognize only one band with M(r) approximately 90,000. Localization of hsp90 in human gingival fibroblasts was studied using the 29A antibody by indirect mono- and double-staining immunofluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The distribution was compared to that of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and various cytoskeletal structures. Cells were analyzed in interphase and mitosis under basal culture conditions, after heat shock and after microtubule and microfilament depolymerization, sometimes combined with heat shock. A major part of hsp90 immunoreactivity was diffusely distributed throughout the interphase cytoplasm, but a weak nuclear staining with non-stained nucleoli was also present, however, only detectable after methanol and not after formaldehyde/Triton X-100 fixation. Heat shock induced a time-dependent translocation of hsp90 from the cytoplasm to the cell nucleus reaching a plateau after 15 h. This compartment shift was reversible and also occurred in the absence of intact microtubules or intact microfilaments.

  • Ingår i: Molecular and cellular endocrinology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0303-7207 .- 1872-8057. ; 110:1-2, s. 49-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of glucocorticoid hormones, purified glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and purified heat shock protein M(r) 90,000 (hsp90) on microtubule (MT) assembly in vitro was tested by a spectrophotometric MT assembly assay and electron microscopy. GR significantly prolonged the nucleation phase, slowed down the assembly rate and reduced the maximal amplitude of MT assembly compared with control. The effects were partially reversed by the addition of glucocorticoid hormone. GR associated with MTs. These results indicate that GR affects MT assembly in vitro, which may be a functional correlate to the structural association of GR with MTs. This implies that factors affecting GR may affect MT assembly in vivo.

  • 1990
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cell Biology. - 0171-9335 .- 1618-1298. ; 53:2, s. 390-401
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cellular distribution of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) in relation to various intracellular and plasma membrane structures in human fibroblasts was studied using indirect immunofluorescence techniques with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. During interphase, GR was located predominantly in the cytoplasm, showing a similar pattern as tubulin. In mitotic cells, GR and tubulin were localized in mitotic spindles and in telophase midbodies. Colchicine and vinblastine induced a similar redistribution of GR and tubulin to the cell periphery. This redistribution was reversible for colchicine but not for vinblastine. Vinblastine also induced paracrystals containing GR and tubulin. These results support the hypothesis that GR interacts in vivo with cytoplasmic microtubules.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry. - : SAGE Publications. - 0022-1554 .- 1551-5044. ; 42:5, s. 645-657
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied the subcellular distribution of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) by light microscopy (LM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in different mammalian cell types. The effect of added glucocorticoid hormones on GR distribution was investigated by photometric quantitation on optical sections obtained by CLSM followed by statistical analysis. In the control interphase cytoplasm, the distribution of GR was fibrillar in some and diffuse in other cell types. Fibrillar GR was distributed along cytoplasmic microtubules (MTs) with predilection for a subset of MTs. GR was also observed in the centrosomes. Nuclear GR was both diffuse and granular in distribution. During cell division, GR appeared in the mitotic apparatus at all stages of mitosis. These findings were not fixation-dependent. Glucocorticoid treatment increased both the nuclear and cytoplasmic GR signal. However, this was detectable only after precipitating but not cross-linking fixation. There was both intra- and intercellular GR heterogeneity in the absence and presence of hormone but no indication of a hormone-induced nuclear translocation of GR. We present a hypothetical model of two independent GR populations in the nucleus and cytoplasm, respectively, without any discernible ligand-induced nuclear translocation of GR. The extranuclear GR population may exert effect(s) on site in the cytoplasm without involving nuclear genomic transcription.

  • Subcellular distribution of the glucocorticoid receptor and evidence for its association with microtubules
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-0760 .- 1879-1220. ; 52:1, s. 1-16
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cellular distribution of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) has not yet been firmly established. The extensive literature indicates that GR is present both in the cytoplasm and the cell nucleus, however, some studies have failed to detect cytoplasmic GR. It is still controversial as to whether GR is randomly diffusing in the cytoplasm and nucleus, or if the GR-distribution is organized or controlled in some way, which may be of importance for the transduction of glucocorticoid effects to cells. There is evidence that both non-activated and activated GR is associated with the plasma membrane, a number of cytoplasmic organelles and the nucleus. Both morphological and biochemical evidence show that GR is associated with microtubules during different stages of the cell cycle, i.e. GR co-localizes, co-purifies and co-polymerizes with tubulin. This indicates that GR is structurally linked to the intracellular MT-network which may be of importance in the mechanism of action of glucocorticoid hormones. The literature in this field is reviewed including the reported data on subcellular GR-localization.

  • Pretreatment with glucose infusion prevents fatal outcome after hemorrhage in food deprived rats
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Circulatory Shock. - Hoboken, NJ, USA : John Wiley & Sons. - 0092-6213. ; 39:1, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Twenty-four hour food deprivation increases mortality after experimental hemorrhage. Survival after hemorrhage is closely related to the capacity of the animal to develop hyperglycemia. In this study, 24 hr food deprived rats were given a 3-hr infusion of either 0.3 ml/100 g b.wt./h 30% glucose iv (n = 10) or the same volume of 0.9% NaCl (n = 10) prior to 60 min of standardized hemorrhage. Glucose infusion resulted in a transient hyperglycemia, and 600% greater hepatic glycogen content compared to saline (P < 0.001). During hemorrhage, glucose-treated rats developed substantial hyperglycemia while glucose levels fell in saline treated (P < 0.001). Concomitant developments in hematocrits indicated improved plasma refill in glucose treated animals (P < 0.01). While saline treated rats developed irreversible shock and died within 3 hr of bleeding, glucose treated rats had a MAP of 52 ± 2 (mean ± SEM) mm Hg by the end of hemorrhage (P < 0.01). All glucose-treated rats recovered and survived the seven-day observation period. It is concluded that glucose infusion leading to hepatic glycogen repletion alters outcome after experimental hemorrhage in food deprived animals. These experimental results may be of clinical relevance, since elective surgery is generally performed after overnight fasting, which substantially reduces the hepatic glycogen reserve.

  • The effect of alpha 2 receptor agonists on central haemodynamic and blood glucose during hemorrhagic stress in the rat
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Surgical Research Communications. - : Harwood Academic. - 0882-9233. ; 9:2-4, s. 151-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of the selective alpha 2 agonist Mivazerol on catecholamine levels in plasma, and on central hemodynamics and blood glucose levels developments during hemorrhagic stress in rats was investigated. The animals were randomly given either saline, low dose of Mivazerol (0.6 μg/ml) or high dose (2.0 μg/ml) at a rate of 30 μl/100 g/min, beginning the infusions intravenously 30 min before onset and throughout 60 min of hemorrhagic stress. Before hemorrhage, Mivazerol raised mean arterial pressure, and reduced heart rate, adrenaline and noradrenaline levels in a dose dependent fashion. High dose infusion also resulted in an elevation in blood glucose. During hemorrhage, the high dose effectively dampened the catecholamine response. Simultaneously, the same group maintained better mean arterial pressure in response to hemorrhage. Blood glucose levels were elevated to similar levels regardless of treatment. These data indicate that Mivazerol effectively reduced the catecholamine response to severe hemorrhagic stress, while central hemodynamic and blood glucose responses were maintained or improved.

  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 258:3-4, s. 493-498
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results on inelastic J/PSI-production from muon interactions with hydrogen and deuterium at an incident muon energy of 280 GeV. The measured cross section ratio per nucleon for muon-induced J/PSI-production in deuterium and hydrogen was found to be R(D2/H2) = 1.01 +/- 0.15. The colour singlet model is shown to provide a good description of the observed differential cross section apart from a normalisation factor. The comparison between the observed cross section and the colour singlet model prediction allows the extraction of the gluon structure function G(chi) of the nucleon. The momentum fraction-chi of the nucleon carried by the gluon is measured in the range of chi = [0.02, 0.30]. The normalised gluon distribution of free nucleons thus found can be parametrised as chi-G(chi) = 1/2 (eta + 1)(1 - chi)eta, with eta = 5.1 +/- 0.9 (stat).

  • Ingår i: Chirality. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0899-0042 .- 1520-636X. ; 9:5-6, s. 638-642
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of 2-substituted 1,3,2-benzodithiazole 1-oxides has been synthesized and the compounds resolved into enantiomers by semipreparative enantioselective liquid chromatography. The low enantiomerization barriers have been determined by chiroptical techniques and were found to be relatively independent of the 2-substituent used. The kinetic results are consistent with a pyramidal inversion mechanism and a reduced barrier due to electronic effects, favouring the transition state over the pyramidal ground state. This mechanistic rationale was further supported by data obtained from molecular modelling using AM1 geometry optimization. The absolute configurations have been determined via a comparison of their CD-spectra with those of analogs with previously determined configuration.

    • The optical isomers of the 1-oxide, 1,3-dioxide and 1,1,3-trioxide, respectively, of 2-benzyl-1,3,2-benzodithiazole have been isolated by chiral liquid chromatography. The rate of racemization was found to be much higher for the monooxide as compared to the dioxide or trioxide. A first-order rate constant of 8.65 × 10-5 s-1 was calculated for the racemization of the 1-oxide in acetonitrile at 21°C. This corresponds to rate constants for the forward and reverse reactions in the enantiomerization process of 4.32 × 10-5 s-1 and a Gibbs' free activation energy of only 96.5 kJ mol-1 separating the enantiomers. The absolute configuration at the tricoordinated sulfur atom in the series of oxides was determined via an X-ray crystallographic structure determination of one of the diastereomeric 2-((S)-α-phenyl-ethyl)-1,3,2-benzodithiazole 1,3-dioxides.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Altered glucose metabolism is one of the commonly observed sequelae of sepsis and septic shock. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the role of endotoxin (ET) upon hepatocyte glucoregulation, by measuring the activity of pyruvate kinase (PK), a key glycolytic enzyme. Hepatocytes were exposed to endotoxin concentrations known to occur in vivo during sepsis, i.e., from 1 X 10(-14) to 1 X 10(-8) g/ml. The alteration of the enzyme activities after addition of epinephrine, glucagon, insulin and calcium ionophore A23187 with and without ET preincubation were also examined. ET alone decreased the PK activity by 12% at all concentrations tested. The basal inhibition of the enzyme caused by epinephrine (-48%) was partially blocked by ET preincubation above 1 X 10(-10) g/ml. There were no ET-(glucagon, calcium ionophore, insulin) interaction. These in vitro results do not support pyruvate kinase as a site of hepatic enzyme regulation defect in endotoxaemia.

    • We present a re-evaluation of the structure function ratios F-2(He)/F-2(D), F-2(C)/F-2(D) and F-2(Ca)/F-2(D) measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at an incident muon momentum of 200 GeV. We also present the ratios F-2(C)/F-2(Li), F-2(Ca)/F-2(Li) and F-2(Ca)/F-2(C) measured at 90 GeV. The results are based on data already published by NMC; the main difference in the analysis is a correction for the masses of the deuterium targets and an improvement in the radiative corrections. The kinematic range covered is 0.0035 < x < 0.65, 0.5 < Q(2) < 90 GeV2 for the He/D, C/D and Ca/D data and 0.0085 < x < 0.6, 0.84 < Q(2) < 17 GeV2 for the Li/C/Ca ones.

    • Results are presented on the difference in R, the ratio of longitudinally to transversely polarised virtual photon absorption cross sections, for the deuteron and the proton. They are obtained by comparing the ratio of cross sections for the deep inelastic scattering of muons from deuterium and hydrogen targets at 90 and 280 GeV incident energy. The results cover the range x = 0.01 -0.30, at an average Q2 of 9 GeV2. The measured difference R(d)-R(p) shows no significant x dependence and is compatible with zero, as well as with expectations from perturbative QCD. We use the same method to obtain the difference R(Ca)-R(C) from cross section ratios measured on carbon and calcium targets at 90 and 200 GeV incident energy.

  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields. - : Springer. - 0170-9739 .- 1431-5858. ; 53:1, s. 73-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure function ratios F2C/F2Li, F2Ca/F2Li and F2Ca/F2C were measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at an incident muon energy of 90 GeV, covering the kinematic range 0.0085 < x < 0.6 and 0.8 < Q2 < 17 GeV2. The sensitivity of the nuclear structure functions to the size and mean density of the target nucleus is discussed.

  • Precision measurement of the structure function ratios F2He/F2D, F2C/F2D and F2Ca/F2D
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields. - : Springer. - 0170-9739 .- 1431-5858. ; 51:3, s. 387-393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the structure function ratios F2He/F2D, F2C/F2D and F2Ca/F2D measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at an incident muon momentum of 200 GeV. The kinematic range 0.0035 < x < 0.65 and 0.5 < Q2 < 90 GeV2 is covered. At low x the three ratios are significantly smaller than unity and the size of the depletion grows with decreasing x and increasing mass number A. At intermediate x the ratios show an enhancement of about 2% above unity for C/D and Ca/D, possibly less for He/D. There are indications of some Q2 dependence in the Ca/D data. The integrals of the structure function differences F2A-F2D are discussed.

  • Proton and deuteron F2 structure functions in deep inelastic muon scattering
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 295:1-2, s. 159-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure functions F2p and F2d measured by deep inelastic muon scattering at incident energies of 90 and 280 GeV are presented. These measurements cover a large kinematic range, 0.006 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 0.6 and 0.5 less-than-or-equal-to Q2 less-than-or-equal-to 55 GeV2, and include the first precise data at small x, where large scaling violations are observed. The data agree with earlier results from SLAC and BCDMS but exhibit differences with respect to those of EMC-NA2. Extrapolations to small x of recent phenomenological parton distributions are shown to disagree with the present results.

  • The ratio F2 n/F2 p in deep inelastic muon scattering
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics B. - : Elsevier. - 0550-3213 .- 1873-1562. ; 371:1-2, s. 3-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Results are presented on the ratio of neutron and proton structure functions, F2n/F2p, deduced from deep inelastic scattering of muons from hydrogen and deuterium. The data, which were obtained at the CERN muon beam at 90 and 280 GeV incident energy, cover the kinematic range x = 0.002-0.80 and Q2 = 0.1-190 GeV2. The measured structure function ratios have small statistical and systematic errors, particularly at small and intermediate x. The observed Q2 dependence in the range x = 0.1-0.4 is stronger than predicted by perturbative QCD. From the present data together with results from other experiments it is suggested that the twist-four coefficient for the proton is smaller than that for the neutron for x larger than 0.2.

  • Transverse momentum distributions for exclusive ρ0 muoproduction
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Physik C Particles and Fields. - : Springer. - 0170-9739 .- 1431-5858. ; 54:2, s. 239-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied transverse momentum distributions for exclusive rho(0) muoproduction on protons and heavier nuclei at 2 < Q2 < 25 GeV2. The Q2 dependence of the slopes of the p(t)2 and t' distributions is discussed. The influence of the non-exclusive background is investigated. The p(t)2-slope for exclusive events is 4.3 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.7 GeV-2 at large Q2. The p(t)2 spectra are much softer than inclusive p(t)2 spectra of leading hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering.
