  • Foucault, Magritte and negative theology beyond representation
  • 2013
  • In: Studia Theologica. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0039-338X .- 1502-7791. ; 67:1, s. 63-79
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recent theological writings on the French philosopher Michel Foucault often mention Foucault in relation to negative theology. This article discusses the negative motion in Foucauldian thinking through Foucault's essay on the Belgian painter René Magritte. On the basis of this discussion, the article sketches a renewed account of negative theology. It is a post-representational account of negative theology in accordance with Foucault's critique of representation, as presented in his Magritte essay.

  • Etiska undersökningar : Om samhällsmoral, etisk teori och teologi
  • 2010
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

    • From Mixed Choir to Worship Team. Historical and Theological Perspectives on Song Groups in the Swedish Free ChurchesThe study gives an overview of different types of choirs in the Free Churches in Sweden, especially in the Baptist Union. The aim is to discuss the ecclesial character of choirship, a concept that is introduced here, and to present a deeper understanding of it as a fundamental expression of being church. The underlying hypothesis is that different kinds of choirship create different kinds of ecclesial communities. And vice versa: different kinds of ecclesial communities create different kinds of choirship. From the more than 160 year old history of Baptist choirs in Sweden the study identifies and discusses theologically five different choirships: mixed choirs singing SATB, string bands and choirs, revival campaign choirs, youth choirs/gospel choirs, struggle song choirs, and worship (or song) teams. Other types, such as men’s choirs and children’s choirs, are also mentioned. The study makes comparisons between the choirs in the Baptist Union and other Free Churches, especially the Mission Covenant Church and the Pentecostals. An important aspect of the study is also the cultural and socio-political context of the choirships. The choirs’ musical styles and genres both reflect and contrast with the traditions, trends and fashions of society.Different elements in the choirship are revealed and analysed: the organisation of the choir, the spirituality of the choirship and its ecclesial community, the different musical styles, the role of choirship in the liturgy, the conductor, the message in the song texts and the frequency of rehearsal and performance. The study shows that the practice of choirship includes an ongoing evaluation of two distinct aspects of this art: form and content. The history of the Baptist choirs addresses the challenge of keeping form and content together.

  • Composite Artistry in the Book of Numbers : A Study in Biblical Narrative Conventions
  • 2013
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The present thesis discusses the coherence or lack of coherence in the book of Numbers, with special regard to its narrative features. The fragmented nature of Numbers is a well-known problem in research on the book, affecting how we approach and interpret it, but to date there has not been any thorough investigation of the narrative features of the work and how they might contribute to the coherence or the lack of coherence in the book. The discussion is pursued in light of narrative theory, and especially in connection to three parameters that are typically understood to be invoked in the interpretation of narratives: 1) a narrative paradigm, or ‘story,’ meaning events related to each other temporally, causally, and thematically, in a plot with a beginning, middle, and end; 2) discourse, being the expression plane of a narrative, or the devices that an author has at hand in constructing a narrative; 3) the situation or language-game of the narrative, prototypical examples being factual reports, which seeks to depict a state of affairs, and storytelling narratives, driven by a demand for tellability. In view of these parameters the present thesis argues that it is reasonable to form four groups to describe the narrative material of Numbers: genuine narratives (e.g. Num 12), independent narrative sequences (e.g. Num 5:1-4), instrumental scenes and situations (e.g. Num 27:1-5), and narrative fragments (e.g. Num 18:1). These groups are mixed throughout with non-narrative materials. Seen together, however, the narrative features of these groups can be understood to create an attenuated narrative sequence from beginning to end in Numbers, where one thing happens after another. This sequence, termed the ‘larger story’ of Numbers, concerns the wandering of Israel from Sinai to Moab. Furthermore, the larger story has a fragmented plot. The end-point is fixed on the promised land, Israel prepares for the wandering towards it (Num 1-10), rebels against wandering and the promise and is sent back into the wilderness (Num 13-14), returns again after forty years (Num 21ff.), and prepares for conquering the land (Num 22-36). Finally, themes of the promised land, generational succession, and obedience-disobedience, operate in this larger story. Purity is also a significant theme in the book, albeit not connected to plot in the larger story. All in all, sequence, plot, and theme in the larger story of Numbers can be understood to bring some coherence to the book. However, neither aspect entirely subsumes the whole book, and the four groups of narrative materials can also be understood to underscore the incoherence of the work in differentiating its variegated narrative contents. Numbers should therefore be described as an anthology of different materials that are loosely connected through its narrative features in the larger story, with the aim of informing Israelite identity by depicting a certain period in the early history of the people.

    • Suggests that narrative features bring some coherence to the book of Numbers, but not total. The narrative features are here here sorted into four rough groups, which both contribute to and disrupt the coherence of the work. The article is a prequel to my doctoral thesis.

  • Justification in a Post-Christian Society
  • 2014
  • Book (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • How should we evaluate Lutheran tradition in today's Western multicultural and post-Christian society? Is is possible to develop a Lutheran theological position than can be regarded as reasonable in a society that evidences a considerable weakening of the role of Christianity? These are the issues dealt with in this volume on Lutheran theology and ethics.

  • Comprehending Christian Zionism : perspectives in comparison
  • 2014
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The issue of Christian Zionism is one that is fiercely debated within theology, the church, politics, and society. Comprehending Christian Zionism brings together an international consortium of scholars and researchers to reflect on the network of issues and topics surrounding this critical subject. The volume provides a lens on the history of Zionism within Christian theology and offers a constructive, multidimensional path for assessment and introspection around the meaning of Zionism to Christian faith and practice.

  • Av denna världen? : Emil Gustafson, moderniteten och den evangelikala väckelsen
  • 2012
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between evangelicalism and modernity with the Swedish holiness preacher Emil Gustafson (1862–1900) as a case. This is achieved by comparing Gustafson’s spirituality with Charles Taylor’s characterization of modernity. The investigation identifies five central themes in Gustafson’s spirituality: conversion, calling, suffering, sanctification, and spiritual experience. With regard to these themes paral-lels with modernity are noted. For example, the analysis shows that modern individualism influenced Gustafson’s view of conversion, and that instrumental rationality informed his evaluations of his own work as a preacher. But there are also instances where he distanced himself from modernity. He did not embrace a modern optimistic anthropology, or the view of suffering as purely negative. It is concluded that Gustafson is neither anti-modern, nor identical to Taylor’s depiction of modernity. He represents one kind of modernity. One that is theocentric rather than anthropo-centric. In order to uphold this theocentric character Gustafson’s opposition to the basic struc-ture of modernity had to be grounded in social practices. For instance, his negative anthropol-ogy was grounded in the revival-meeting where outsiders were called to repent and rely on God rather than themselves. Based on the results from this study it is suggested that evangelicalism should be inter-preted as neither in conflict with modernity, nor in continuity with it, but rather as a kind of modernity. There are multiple modernities, and evangelicalism is one of them.

  • 2014. - 1
  • In: Between the State and the Eucharist. - Eugene : Wipf and Stock Publishers. - 9781625641113 ; , s. 68-84
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The argument of this chapter is that the evangelical ideals of simplicity and spontaneity are rooted in a univocal understanding of being. If there is only one kind of being, which God and creation are imagined toshare, then God cannot be thought of as present in and through created matter but rather instead of it. Thus the tendency in the Free churches and Evangelicalism in general to perceive complex practices and materiality as competing with God’s presence, as well as to favor simplicity and spontaneity. But the reluctance towards practices has resulted in an inability to withstand the cultural pressures of modernity. As a consequence Evangelicalism has turned into a mirror image of secular modernity. Furthermore, skepticism towards the material and a preference for authenticity is theologically problematic since it is, as this chapter will demonstrate, akin to a Gnostic worldview.
