    • The n_TOF facility at CERN has been designed for the measurement of neutron capture, fission and (n, xn) cross-sections with high accuracy. This requires a flexible and-due to the high instantaneous neutron flux-almost dead time free data acquisition system. A scalable and versatile data solution has been designed based on 8-bit flash-ADCs with sampling rates up to 2 GHz and 8 Mbyte memory buffer. The software is written in C and C++ and is running on PCs equipped with RedHat Linux.

  • Evolution of genes and genomes on the Drosophila phylogeny

    • Comparative analysis of multiple genomes in a phylogenetic framework dramatically improves the precision and sensitivity of evolutionary inference, producing more robust results than single-genome analyses can provide. The genomes of 12 Drosophila species, ten of which are presented here for the first time (sechellia, simulans, yakuba, erecta, ananassae, persimilis, willistoni, mojavensis, virilis and grimshawi), illustrate how rates and patterns of sequence divergence across taxa can illuminate evolutionary processes on a genomic scale. These genome sequences augment the formidable genetic tools that have made Drosophila melanogaster a pre-eminent model for animal genetics, and will further catalyse fundamental research on mechanisms of development, cell biology, genetics, disease, neurobiology, behaviour, physiology and evolution. Despite remarkable similarities among these Drosophila species, we identified many putatively non-neutral changes in protein-coding genes, non-coding RNA genes, and cis-regulatory regions. These may prove to underlie differences in the ecology and behaviour of these diverse species.

    • The nuclei Ca-47 and Ti-55 were populated in one-neutron knock-out reactions at relativistic energies. Momentum distributions of the residual nuclei as well as gamma-ray spectra were measured at the GSI fragment separator (FRS). Preliminary results of the ongoing analysis including cross sections and spin/parity assignments are presented.

  • Structure of 55Ti from relativistic one-neutron knockout

    • Results are presented from a one-neutron knockout reaction at relativistic energies on 56Ti using the GSI FRS as a two-stage magnetic spectrometer and the Miniball array for gamma-ray detection. Inclusive and exclusive longitudinal momentum distributions and cross-sections were measured enabling the determination of the orbital angular momentum of the populated states. First-time observation of the 955(6) keV -hole state in 55Ti is reported. The measured data for the first time proves that the ground state of 55Ti is a 1/2- state, in agreement with shell-model calculations using the GXPF1A interaction that predict a sizable N=34 gap in 54Ca.

  • Palladium-manganese catalysts supported on monolith systems for methane combustion

    • Alumina-supported bimetallic and monometallic Mn and Pd monolithic catalysts were prepared and tested in methane combustion. Two different reactor configurations were adopted for catalyst testing, i.e. a fixed-bed laboratory-scale reactor and a pilot-plant reactor which allowed work at different temperatures and pressures. The results of catalyst performance showed that all bimetallic catalysts are considerably more stable for methane combustion than the monometallic palladium catalyst. With the aim to explain the relationship between activity-stability and structure and surface properties, the catalysts were characterized by TPO, XRD, XPS and ICP-AES. The high stability displayed by the bimetallic systems is attributed to the influence of manganese in retarding the decomposition of PdO into metallic palladium. Thus, it appears that manganese oxides inhibit PdO decomposition, as a consequence of the increase in oxygen mobility in the manganese oxide spinel phase.

    • High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types cause most cervical carcinomas and are sexually transmitted. Sexual behavior therefore affects HPV exposure and its cancer sequelae. The International Collaboration of Epidemiological Studies of Cervical Cancer has combined data on lifetime number of sexual partners and age at first sexual intercourse from 21 studies, or groups of studies, including 10,773 women with invasive cervical carcinoma, 4,688 women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 (CIN3)/carcinoma in situ, and 29,164 women without cervical carcinoma. Relative risks for invasive cancer and CIN3 were estimated by conditional logistic regression. Risk of invasive cervical carcinoma increased with lifetime number of sexual partners (P for linear trend <0.001). The relative risk for > or =6 versus 1 partner, conditioned on age, study, and age at first intercourse, was 2.27 [95% confidence interval (95% CI), 1.98-2.61] and increased to 2.78 (95% CI, 2.22-3.47) after additional conditioning on reproductive factors. The risk of invasive cervical carcinoma increased with earlier age at first intercourse (P for linear trend <0.001). The relative risk for age at first intercourse < or =14 versus > or =25 years, conditioned on age, study, and lifetime number of sexual partners was 3.52 (95% CI, 3.04-4.08), which decreased to 2.05 (95% CI, 1.54-2.73) after additional conditioning on reproductive factors. CIN3/carcinoma in situ showed a similar association with lifetime number of sexual partners; however, the association with age at first intercourse was weaker than for invasive carcinoma. Results should be interpreted with caution given the strong correlation between sexual and reproductive factors and the limited information on HPV status.

  • Feasibility of low-energy radiative-capture experiments at the LUNA underground accelerator facility

    • The LUNA (Laboratory Underground for Nuclear Astrophysics) facility has been designed to study nuclear reactions of astrophysical interest. It is located deep underground in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, Italy. Two electrostatic accelerators, with 50 and 400 kV maximum voltage, in combination with solid and gas target setups allowed to measure the total cross-sections of the radiative-capture reactions 2H2H(p, γ) 3He3Heand 14N14N(p, γ) 15O15Owithin their relevant Gamow peaks. We report on the gamma background in the Gran Sasso laboratory measured by germanium and bismuth germanate detectors, with and without an incident proton beam. A method to localize the sources of beam-induced background using the Doppler shift of emitted gamma rays is presented. The feasibility of radiative-capture studies at energies of astrophysical interest is discussed for several experimental scenarios. © Società Italiana di Fisica/Springer-Verlag 2005.

  • Arc-continent collision in the Southern Urals

    • The Southern Urals of Russia contain what is arguably one of the best-preserved examples of an arc–continent collision in anyPaleozoic orogen. The arc–continent collision history recorded in the rocks of the Southern Urals began in the Early Devonian withthe onset of intra-oceanic subduction and the formation of the Magnitogorsk Arc and ended with its collision with the margin ofBaltica during the Late Devonian. The Baltica margin consisted of a basement that was composed predominantly of rocks ofArchean and Proterozoic age that, by the time of arc–continent collision, was overlain by Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, andDevonian sediments interpreted to have been deposited in rift-related grabens on the continental slope and rise, and on the shallowmarine platform. The Magnitogorsk Arc consists of Early to Late Devonian island arc volcanic rocks and overlying volcaniclasticsediments. Arc–continent collision led to the development of an accretionary complex that includes shallowly and deeplysubducted continental margin rocks, ophiolite fragments, and sediments that were deposited in a foreland-basin setting. Thegeochemistry of the Magnitogorsk Arc volcanic rocks, the structure of the arc–continent collision accretionary complex and theforearc, the high-pressure rocks beneath and along the suture zone, the mafic and ultramafic ophiolitic material, and the syn-tectonic sediments show that the Paleozoic tectonic processes recorded in the Southern Urals can be favorably compared with thosein currently active settings such as the west Pacific.© 2006 Elsevier B.V.   • Mountain building processes during continent-continent collision in the Uralides

    • Since the early 1990's the Paleozoic Uralide Orogen of Russia has been the target of a significant research initiative as part of EUROPROBE and GEODE, both European Science Foundation programmes. One of the main objectives of these research programmes was the determination of the tectonic processes that went into the formation of the orogen. In this review paper we focus on the Late Paleozoic continent-continent collision that took place between Laurussia and Kazakhstania. Research in the Uralides was concentrated around two deep seismic profiles crossing the orogen. These were accompanied by geological, geophysical, geochronological, geochemical, and low-temperature thermochronological studies. The seismic profiles demonstrate that the Uralides has an overall bivergent structural architecture, but with significantly different reflectivity characteristics from one tectonic zone to another. The integration of other types of data sets with the seismic data allows us to interpret what tectonic processes where responsible for the formation of the structural architecture, and when they were active. On the basis of these data, we suggest that the changes in the crustal-scale structural architecture indicate that there was significant partitioning of tectonothermal conditions and deformation from zone to zone across major fault systems, and between the lower and upper crust. Also, a number of the structural features revealed in the bivergent architecture of the orogen formed either in the Neoproterozoic or in the Paleozoic, prior to continent-continent collision. From the end of continent-continent collision to the present, low-temperature thermochronology suggests that the evolution of the Uralides has been dominated by erosion and slow exhumation. Despite some evidence for more recent topographic uplift, it has so far proven difficult to quantify it.

    • The 14N(p, γ)15O reaction has been investigated by LUNA at the National Laboratory of Gran Sasso (LNGS) using two different techniques. The first study has been performed using a solid target and detecting the γ-rays coming from the single transitions with a HPGe detector in very close geometry to the target. In a second phase a windowless gas target sorrounded by a nearly 4π BGO summing crystal has been used and the total S-factor has been measured down to Eb = 80 keV. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.     • The astrophysical S(E) factor of 14N(p,γ)15O has been measured for effective center-of-mass energies between E eff = 119 and 367 keV at the LUNA facility using TiN solid targets and Ge detectors. The data are in good agreement with previous and recent work at overlapping energies. R-matrix analysis reveals that due to the complex level structure of 15O the extrapolated S(0) value is model dependent and calls for additional experimental efforts to reduce the present uncertainty in S(0) to a level of a few percent as required by astrophysical calculations. © Società Italiana di Fisica / Springer-Verlag 2005.

  • Fluorescence emission following core excitations in the water molecule

    • Photon-induced fluorescence spectroscopy has been used to study the fragmentation of the water molecule at the O 1s is edge. Fluorescence emission has been observed from the neutral fragments H, O and OH as well as from the ionic fragments O+ and OH+. The extracted fluorescence yields of the H Lyman-alpha emission and O 2p(3)(S-4)3p(P-3) -> 2p(3)(S-4)3s(S-3) transitions show the same structures as the total ion yield spectrum but with different relative intensities. The most intense fluorescence emission is restricted to the region of the core excitations, while above the O 1s ionization limit the signal is much weaker (in the case of H) or below the detection limit (O, OH and OH+). The fluorescence emission is concluded to follow from the following general cascade: the core-excited states decay by resonant Auger transitions, the final states reached undergo dissociation into ionic and neutral fragments, and fluorescence occurs from excited fragments. In the case of the OH (A(2)Sigma(+) -> X-2 Pi) emission, the decay of core-excited states through soft x-ray emission may also be responsible for the observed fluorescence.

    • The hydrogen Lyman-alpha, Balmer-alpha, and Balmer-beta emission has been measured from the H2O molecule at photon energies exceeding the 1s ionization threshold. Fluorescence emission is shown to be a sensitive probe to neutral core-hole doubly excited states and singly ionized 1s shake-up states that are embedded in the core ionization continuum. In addition, the photoabsorption spectrum of the water molecule in the energy range of the double excitations has been measured with better statistics than previously.

  • Pygmy Dipole Strength in Exotic Nuclei and the Equation of State

    • A concentration of dipole strength at energies below the giant dipole resonance was observed in neutron-rich nuclei around Sn-132 in an experiment using the FRS-LAND setup. This so-called "pygmy" dipole strength can be related to the parameters of the symmetry energy and to the neutron skin thickness on the grounds of a relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation. Using this ansatz and the experimental findings for Sn-130 and 132 Sri, we derive a value of the symmetry energy pressure of (p) over bar (0) = 2.2 +/- 0.5 MeV/fm(3). Neutron skin thicknesses of R-n-R-p = 0.23 +/- 0.03 fm and 0.24 +/- 0.03 fm for Sn-130 and Sn-132, respectively, have been determined. Preliminary results on Ni-68 from a similar experiment using an improved setup indicate an enhanced cross section at low energies, while the results for Ni-58 are in accordance with results from photoabsorption measurements.

  • Precision study of ground state capture in the 14N(p,γ)15O reaction

    • The rate of the hydrogen-burning carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle is controlled by the slowest process, 14N(p,γ)15O, which proceeds by capture to the ground and several excited states in O15. Previous extrapolations for the ground state contribution disagreed by a factor 2, corresponding to 15% uncertainty in the total astrophysical S factor. At the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) 400 kV accelerator placed deep underground in the Gran Sasso facility in Italy, a new experiment on ground state capture has been carried out at 317.8, 334.4, and 353.3 keV center-of-mass energy. Systematic corrections have been reduced considerably with respect to previous studies by using a Clover detector and by adopting a relative analysis. The previous discrepancy has been resolved, and ground state capture no longer dominates the uncertainty of the total S factor. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

  • "Safe" Coulomb excitation of Mg-30

    • We report on the first radioactive beam experiment performed at the recently commissioned REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN in conjunction with the highly efficient γ spectrometer MINIBALL. Using Mg-30 ions accelerated to an energy of 2.25 MeV/u together with a thin Ni-nat target, Coulomb excitation of the first excited 2(+) states of the projectile and target nuclei well below the Coulomb barrier was observed. From the measured relative deexcitation γ-ray yields the B(E2;0(gs)(+)&RARR; 2(1)(+)) value of Mg-30 was determined to be 241(31)e(2) fm(4). Our result is lower than values obtained at projectile fragmentation facilities using the intermediate-energy Coulomb excitation method, and confirms the theoretical conjecture that the neutron-rich magnesium isotope Mg-30 resides outside the "island of inversion."

    • The magnetic properties of maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) cubic and spherical nanoparticles of similar sizes have been experimentally and theoretically studied. The blocking temperature, TB, of the nanoparticles depends on their shape, with the spherical ones exhibiting larger TB. Other low temperature properties such as saturation magnetization, coercivity, loop shift or spin canting are rather similar. The experimental effective anisotropy and the Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the different random surface anisotropy of the two morphologies combined with the low magnetocrystalline anisotropy of gamma-Fe2O3 is the origin of these effects.

    • The magnetic domain structure of patterned antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic Ir20Mn80/Ni80Fe20 bilayer microdisk arrays has been investigated using layer-specific polarized x-ray photoemission electron microscopy and magnetic circular dichroism. Magnetic imaging at the Fe and Mn L-edge resonances provided direct evidence of a vortex state imprinted into the antiferromagnet at the interface. The opposite magnetic contrast between the layers indicated a reversed chirality of the imprinted vortex state, and a quantitative analysis of the magnetic moment from the dichroism spectra showed that uncompensated Mn spins equivalent to about 60% of a monolayer of bulk Ir20Mn80 contributed to the imprinted information at the interface.

    • After the successful commissioning of the radioactive beam experiment at ISOLDE (REX-ISOLDE) - an accelerator for exotic nuclei produced by ISOLDE - in 2002 and the promotion to a CERN user facility in 2003, first physics experiments using these beams were performed. Initial experiments focused on the region of deformation in the vicinity of the neutron-rich Na and Mg isotopes. Preliminary results on the neutron-rich Na and Mg isotopes show the high potential and physics opportunities offered by the exotic isotope accelerator REX in conjunction with the modern Germanium gamma spectrometer MINIBALL.

  • Highly hydrophobic surfaces prepared by atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharges

    • Atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) treatments of wood were done to attain water repellency on wood surfaces. A specially designed frequency controlled parallel-plate DBD reactor was utilized to produce the discharges. Ethylene, methane, chlorotrifluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene were used as DBD reagents. Contact angle, water absorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements on the modified surfaces were performed. For methane and ethylene, XPS data showed an increased surface atomic concentration of carbon from 72.7% on untreated samples up to 80.7 and 96%, respectively, whereas nearly 50% fluorine concentration was observed with fluorinated reagents. The C-1s spectrum of hexafluoropropylene-DBD-treated wood sample showed that the CF3 group was introduced in a relative amount of 19%. AFM images showed distinct features for each of the DBD treatments, such as a deposit of a thin uniform film in the case of ethylene-DBD treatment, whereas the hexafluoropropylene-DBD treatment resulted in the nucleation of plasma-derived entities at the fiber surface and the subsequent growth of a film. Under optimized conditions the water contact angle was in the range of 139 degrees- 145 degrees. The combination of depositing a low surface energy polymer on an already rough surface gave the surface-treated wood a highly hydrophobic character.

    • We report on a new measurement of 14N(p,γ)15O for the ground state capture transition at Ep = 360, 380 and 400 keV, using the 400 kV LUNA accelerator. The true coincidence summing effect - the major source of error in the ground state capture determination - has been significantly reduced by using a Clover-type gamma detector. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.
