  • Search for the lepton-family-number nonconserving decay μ +→e +γ
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 65:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MEGA experiment, which searched for the muon- and electron-number violating decay μ +→e + γ, is described. The spectrometer system, the calibrations, the data taking procedures, the data analysis, and the sensitivity of the experiment are discussed. The most stringent upper limit on the branching ratio, B(μ + →e + γ)<1.2×10 -11 with 90% confidence, is derived from a likelihood analysis.

  • A generic approach for in depth statistical investigation of accident characteristics and causes
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the conference Traffic Safety on Three Continents. - Linköping : Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut. ; , s. 653-665
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main aim of this research is to develop a generic approach for the utilization of statistical methods to conduct depth investigation of road accident characteristics and causes. This approach is applied in an effort to analyse the 1998 accident database for the main rural roads in Egypt. This database is composed of traffic accident data collected for 14 road sections representing nine major roads of the Egyptian rural road network. The proposed approach is composed of two main stages of analysis. Within each stage, several analytical steps are conducted. The first stage is mainly concerned with developing cluster bar charts, where different characteristics and causes of accidents are portrayed in relation to variations in the three main accident contributing factors, namely types of roads, vehicles and drivers. The second stage is concerned with conducting in-depth statistical analysis of the collected accident data. Within this stage, four levels of statistical investigations were conducted. These are meant to examine a number of issues.

  • Increased levels of autoantibodies against copper-oxidized low density lipoprotein, malondialdehyde-modified low density lipoprotein and cardiolipin in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Rheumatology. - 1462-0324 .- 1462-0332. ; 41, s. 988-995
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives. To analyse the association of autoantibodies against cardiolipin (CL) and oxidized low density lipoproteins [copper-oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL), malondialdehyde-modified LDL (MDA-LDL)] with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and cardiovascular complications. Methods. One hundred and twenty-one patients with RA were consecutively included. Autoantibodies were determined by ELISA. Healthy individuals from the same region were used as controls. Results. Levels of IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies against MDA-LDL and CL, as well as IgG and IgA antibodies against oxLDL were increased in the patients (P<0.01). The prevalence of IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies against CL was higher than in the normal population (74, 82 and 14%, respectively). The prevalence of IgG and IgA antibodies against oxLDL was also significantly increased (35 and 25%, respectively) and so was the prevalence of IgG and IgM antibodies against MDA-LDL (17 and 26%, respectively) compared with controls. The levels of IgM and IgA antibodies against aCL and IgM against MDA-LDL were increased in patients with extra-articular manifestations. Patients who developed myocardial infarction had a higher prevalence of IgG antibodies against MDA-LDL (P=0.04). There were substantial correlations between the levels of antibodies against oxLDL, MDA-LDL and CL. Conclusions. RA patients had increased levels and prevalence of autoantibodies against CL, oxLDL and MDA-LDL, with associations to severity of disease and cardiovascular complications.

  • Alteration in endogenous systems during chronic inflammatory pain conditions
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Pharmacology. - 0014-2999 .- 1879-0712. ; 435:2-3, s. 245-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of chronic arthritic pain on two endogenous opioid peptides, dynorphin B and [Met5]enkephalin-Arg6-Phe7, and multiple opioid receptors in discrete brain, lumbar spinal cord and pituitary pools was investigated. Using radioimmunoassay and receptor binding assay, we examined the changes in regional opioid peptide levels and opioid receptor activity due to chronic inflammation in adjuvant arthritic rats. At 4 weeks post-inoculation, increased levels of immunoreactive dynorphin B and [Met5]enkephalin-Arg6-Phe7 were measured in tissues of arthritic rats compared with controls. No significant changes in mu-, delta- or kappa-opioid receptors were seen after chronic inflammation. Taken together, these results indicate that in chronic arthritis, opioid receptor changes do not follow the peptide alterations of pro-dynorphin and pro-enkephalin systems. Thus, dynamic modification and modulation of nociceptive information takes place during chronic inflammation. This supports the key role of the central nervous system in chronic inflammatory pain conditions.
