    • We study the extension of the class of linear time invariant plants that may be transformed into SPR systems introducing an observer. It is shown that for open loop stable systems a cascaded observer achieves the result. For open loop unstable systems an observer-based feedback is required to succeed. In general any stabilizable and observable system may be transformed into an SPR system using cascade or cascade and feedback controllers. This overcomes the old conditions of minimum phase and relative degree one. The result is illustrated with some examples.

    • This chapter addresses the control of glucose feeding in fed-batchreactors. The feeding strategy is based on a pulse technique, whichdoes not require a priori knowledge of the process. A feedbackalgorithm optimizes the feed rate with respect to the constraints ofaerobic conditions and overfeeding. Stability and performance analysisare performed on a simplified model of the reactor, using standard LMIoptimization routines. Tuning guidelines that help the user for thedesign are also derived.

    • In spite of the success of traditional sampled-data theory in computer control it has some disadvantages particularly for distributed, asynchronous, and multi-rate system. Event based sampling is an alternative which is explored in this paper. A simple example illustrates the differences between periodic and event based sampling. The architecture of a general structure for event based control is presented. The key elements are an event detector, an observer, and a control signal generator, which can be regarded as a generalized data-hold. Relations to nonlinear systems are discussed. Design of an event based controller is illustrated for a simple model of a micro-mechanical accelerometer.
