  • GRB 030227 : The first multiwavelength afterglow of an INTEGRAL GRB
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Astronomy & Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 411:1, s. 315-319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present multiwavelength observations of a gamma-ray burst detected byINTEGRAL (GRB 030227) between 5.3 hours and ~ 1.7days after the event. Here we report the discovery of a dim opticalafterglow (OA) that would not have been detected by many previoussearches due to its faintess (R ~ 23). This OA was seen to declinefollowing a power law decay with index alpha R = -0.95 +/-0.16. The spectral index beta_ opt/NIR yielded -1.25 +/- 0.14. Thesevalues may be explained by a relativistic expansion of a fireball (withp = 2.0) in the cooling regime. We also find evidence for inverseCompton scattering in X-rays.Based on observations with INTEGRAL, an ESA project with instruments andscience data centre funded by ESA member states (especially the PIcountries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain), CzechRepublic and Poland, and with the participation of Russia and the USA.Also partially based on observations collected by the Gamma-Ray BurstCollaboration at ESO (GRACE) at the European Southern Observatory, Chile(ESO Large Programme 165.H-0464).

  • Cultural values, sources of guidance, and their relevance to managerial behavior - A 47-nation study
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology. - : Sage Publications. - 0022-0221 .- 1552-5422. ; 33:2, s. 188-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data are presented showing how middle managers in 47 countries report handling eight specific work events. The data are used to test the ability of cultural value dimensions derived from the work of Hofstede. Trompenaars, and Schwartz to predict the specific sources of guidance on which managers rely. Focusing on sources of guidance is expected to provide a more precise basis than do generalized measures of values for understanding the behaviors that prevail within different cultures. Values are strongly predictive of reliance on those sources of guidance that are relevant to vertical relationships within organizations. Hock ever, values are less successful in predicting reliance on peers and on more tacit sources of guidance. Explaining national differences in these neglected aspects of organizational processes will require greater sensitivity to the culture-specific contexts within which they occur.

  • Automated detection of fundus photographic red lesions in diabetic retinopathy
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. - : Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). - 1552-5783. ; 44:2, s. 761-766
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE. To compare a fundus image-analysis algorithm for automated detection of hemorrhages and microaneurysms with visual detection of retinopathy in patients with diabetes. METHODS. Four hundred fundus photographs (35-mm color transparencies) were obtained in 200 eyes of 100 patients with diabetes who were randomly selected from the Welsh Community Diabetic Retinopathy Study. A gold standard reference was defined by classifying each patient as having or not having diabetic retinopathy based on overall visual grading of the digitized transparencies. A single-lesion visual grading was made independently, comprising meticulous outlining of all single lesions in all photographs and used to develop the automated red lesion detection system. A comparison of visual and automated single-lesion detection in replicating the overall visual grading was then performed. RESULTS. Automated red lesion detection demonstrated a specificity of 71.4% and a resulting sensitivity of 96.7% in detecting diabetic retinopathy when applied at a tentative threshold setting for use in diabetic retinopathy screening. The accuracy of 79% could be raised to 85% by adjustment of a single user-supplied parameter determining the balance between the screening priorities, for which a considerable range of options was demonstrated by the receiver-operating characteristic (area under the curve 90.3%). The agreement of automated lesion detection with overall visual grading (0.659) was comparable to the mean agreement of six ophthalmologists (0.648). CONCLUSIONS. Detection of diabetic retinopathy by automated detection of single fundus lesions can be achieved with a performance comparable to that of experienced ophthalmologists. The results warrant further investigation of automated fundus image analysis as a tool for diabetic retinopathy screening.

  • Photoinduced effects and oxygen dynamics in YBa2Cu3Ox
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Physica. C, Superconductivity. - 0921-4534 .- 1873-2143. ; 364, s. 545-548
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3Ox (Y123) exhibits persistent photoconductivity when illuminated by visible light. We have investigated resonant Raman spectra as a function of excitation wavelength and temperature, which shed new light on photoinduced effects and chain oxygen dynamics in Y123. Experimental evidence suggests that the mechanism behind the unusual photoinduced effects primary involves photoinduced oxygen ordering. Our Raman data also constitute the non-diffraction observations of the superstructure phase transition in Y123. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • The arthropod community of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) canopies in Norway
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Entomologica Fennica. - 0785-8760. ; 15:2, s. 65-90
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We summarise the findings of arthropods collected by fogging the canopy of 24 pine trees in two sites in Eastern and Western Norway. From the samples, taken in 1998 and in 1999, almost 30,000 specimens were determined to 512 species, with Diptera being most species rich (210 species), followed by Coleoptera (76 species) and Araneae (49 species). Of the 96 new species records, nine were new to science (5 Diptera and 4 Oribatida), two were new to the European, three to the Scandinavian and 82 to the Norwegian faunas. The paper demonstrates the need for detailed faunistical inventories of European forests.

  • Kinetic hindrance during the initial oxidation of Pd(100) at ambient pressures
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 92:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The oxidation of the Pd(100) surface at oxygen pressures in the 10(-6) to 10(3) mbar range and temperatures up to 1000 K has been studied in situ by surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD). The results provide direct structural information on the phases present in the surface region and on the kinetics of the oxide formation. Depending on the (T,p) environmental conditions, we observe either a thin (root5 x root5)R27degrees surface oxide or the growth of a rough, poorly ordered bulk oxide film of PdO predominantly with (001) orientation. By either comparison to the surface phase diagram from first-principles atomistic thermodynamics or by explicit time-resolved measurements we identify a strong kinetic hindrance to the bulk oxide formation even at temperatures as high as 675 K.

  • Recommendations on percutaneous coronary intervention for the reperfusion of acute ST elevation myocardial infarction.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Heart (British Cardiac Society). - 1468-201X. ; 90:6
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little information is currently available from the various societies of cardiology on primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Since primary PCI is the main method of reperfusion in AMI in many centres, and since of all cardiac emergencies AMI represents the most urgent situation for PCI, recommendations based on scientific evidence and expert experience would be useful for centres practising primary PCI, or those looking to establish a primary PCI programme. To this aim, a task force for primary PCI in AMI was formed to develop a set of recommendations to complement and assist clinical judgment. This paper represents the product of their recommendations.

  • The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of ∼14 000 F and G dwarfs
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Astronomy & Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 418:3, s. 989-1019
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age, kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our∼63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities, complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate, however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk, the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity, corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. More advanced analyses of thisrich material will require careful simulations of the selection criteriafor the sample and the distribution of observational errors.Based on observations made with the Danish 1.5-m telescope at ESO, LaSilla, Chile, and with the Swiss 1-m telescope at Observatoire deHaute-Provence, France.Complete Tables 1 and 2 are only available in electronic form at the CDSvia anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/418/989

  • On the origin of the Ru-3d(5/2) satellite feature from RuO2(110)
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - 0039-6028. ; 504:1-3, s. 196-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High resolution core level spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations are used to study the satellite feature of the Ru-3d(5/2), core level spectrum whose interpretation is still a matter of debate. We present evidence that the satellite peak is not related to any structural properties of the RuO2(1 1 0) surface. The binding energy shift between the Ru-3d(5/2) component and the satellite peak is close to the electron energy loss due to plasmon excitation. We propose therefore that the satellite peak is due to excitation of the RuO2 plasmon. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Preserved slow conducting corticomotoneuronal projections in ALS patients with autosomal recessive D90A CuZn-SOD mutation.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Brain. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0006-8950 .- 1460-2156. ; 123:7, s. 1505-1515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, a subgroup of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) syndrome associated with mutations in the gene encoding the free radical scavenging enzyme CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD, SOD1) has been identified. Some 67 different mutations have been reported worldwide to date, comprising about one-fifth of familial ALS cases in the populations studied. The autosomal recessively inherited D90A CuZn-SOD mutation has been associated with a very slowly progressive, clinically distinct phenotype, and is neurophysiologically characterized by very slow central motor conduction. It is not known which physiological and/or biochemical mechanisms are responsible for the different clinical course. To delineate ALS associated with this particular CuZn-SOD mutation from ALS without mutations, we performed a detailed neurophysiological study of the corticomotoneuronal function using peristimulus time histograms (PSTHs) in eight ALS patients homozygous for the D90A CuZn-SOD mutation. The results were compared with those obtained in 12 non-hereditary ALS patients and 11 healthy subjects. PSTHs were constructed from three to seven different, voluntarily recruited motor units of the extensor digitorum communis muscle (EDC) in each patient. The onset latency, number of excess bins, duration and synchrony of the primary peak were analysed. All measurements differed significantly between healthy controls and the D90A patients (P < 0.0007). The mean onset latency of the primary peak in D90A patients was 35.3 ms, compared with 24.2 ms for non-hereditary ALS patients and 19.3 ms for normal subjects (P < 0.0000). Delayed primary peaks in the D90A patients were desynchronized and characteristically preceded by a marked suppression phase. This suppression phase was not seen in non-hereditary ALS patients. We conclude that the mainly slow conducting and/or polysynaptic corticomotoneuronal connections are preserved in the D90A homozygous cases, and that the cortical and possibly spinal inhibitory circuitry is preserved. These events may partially protect the motor neurons, slowing down the degenerative process.

  • The physiological basis of conduction slowing in ALS patients homozygous for the autosomal recessive D90A CuZn-SOD mutation
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Muscle and Nerve. - 0148-639X .- 1097-4598. ; 24:1, s. 89-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with the autosomal-recessively inherited D90A CuZn-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD) mutation is characterized by a stereotypic slowly progressive, distinctive phenotype and very slow central motor conduction. To determine the basis of this slowing, we assessed corticomotoneuronal function using peristimulus time histograms (PSTHs) in 8 ALS patients homozygous for the D90A CuZn-SOD mutation. The results were compared with findings in 10 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), in which slowing of central motor conduction is common, and 11 healthy subjects. PSTHs were constructed from 3-7 different, voluntarily recruited motor units recorded in each patient from the extensor digitorum communis muscle (EDC). In D90A and MS patients, the stimulus threshold, onset latency, number of excess bins, duration, amplitude, and synchrony of the primary peak differed significantly from controls (P < 0.0004). The mean onset latency of the primary peak in D90A patients was 35.3 ms, compared to 23.6 ms for MS patients and 19.3 ms for normal subjects (P < 0.0001). In the D90A patients, the onset latencies of the primary peak had a bimodal distribution, whereas in MS the distribution showed a continuum. Loss of synchrony was similar in D90A and MS patients, but the threshold, number of excess bins, and duration differed significantly (P < 0.0057), which suggests that either axonal loss or demyelination can result in delayed and desynchronized primary peaks. We propose that conduction slowing in the D90A homozygotes results from selective loss of fast-conducting large pyramidal cells with preservation of slow-conducting mono- or polysynaptic corticomotoneuronal connections.
